Fedora :: Xfce And/or Applications Crashing?

Feb 3, 2011

I have the xfce 4.6 desktop installed with Fedora 14 x64. First, I started having some problems, not sure if they are connected: the menu button on the panel somehow moved from the bottom left corner by itself, the window manager won't open, all windows (browser, programs, etc.) are cut off so that the strip with the minimize/maximize symbols up in the top-right corner is not visible, all windows open in top left-hand corner of screen and can't be moved, workspaces disappeared form the panel, unable to switch windows (have to close the window in focus to access another), typing in some applications (terminal, text editor) does nothing sometimes but works when I reopen them, etc.

.. After this had been going on for a while (few hours), I was changing the panel icons, and the bug report icon suddenly showed up and said that package gnome-1:0.8.1-10.git20100831.fc14 of the gnome network manager (xfce doesn't have it's own network manager?!) and the ibus keyboard layout switcher plugin had crashed. These don't seem to have anything to do with the troubles I'm having; the internet works fine. I have copies of the bug reports but I'm not sure if I should post them since the bug reporting tool warned me that they may contain sensitive information.

Debian Multimedia :: XFCE - Ugly Fonts In Qt Applications

Jan 8, 2010

I use XFCE on Debian (squeeze) and I'm sick and tired of the ugly fonts in all Qt-apps. See below what it looks like in qtconfig-qt4 with a deleted ~/.config/Trolltech.conf. I've done some googling, but without any satisfaction. I've tried to change font (Font family drop down menu in pic), and some fonts looks as bad as the default (Sans Serif), and some look ok. Something seems to be fscked up.

General :: Gtk-window-decorator Does Not Work With XFCE?

Jul 13, 2011

I really a newbie to xfce. I was using gnome 2 orignally then since I'm using Arch Linux (64-bit), it was updated to Gnome 3. After long weeks of daily use, I didn't like gnome 3. Now, I decided to use xfce. I did a fresh install (after formatting my hdd) of Arch, I put installed XFCE + SLIM login manager. Almost all works fine until I decided to install Compiz. After installing Compiz, for some reason gtk-window-decorator --replace (the one that you put under CCSM > Window Decoration > Command) does not work. Only "emerald --replace" and "kde4-window-decorator --replace" works. Unfortunately, I don't like emerald. When I run gtk-window-decorator --replace in the terminal it gives me this error:

Code:

gtk-window-decorator: error while loading shared libraries: libmetacity-private.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I made sure I installed the complete compiz+gtk package from pacman. BTW, I never had a problem with gnome 2 + compiz + gtk-window-decorator. I don't know if I have to do something extra in xfce to make gtk-window-decorator work.

EDIT: FYI, I use fusion-icon as an autostart application for me to automatically start compiz during startup.

I already have a thread about this problem here, and couldn't solve it till now. I need to know if this issue is related to Debian or to XFCE, before I ask at the XFCE mailing list. So just one simple question: Has any one of you that is using XFCE got the event sounds to work?

Ubuntu :: Xubuntu 10.10 Error When Booting Into Xfce From Work To Home

Dec 2, 2010

I just installed a fresh copy of Xubuntu 10.10 on a penstick and everything was working fine at work and at home. Now when I got to the work this morning I connected the stick to my office network and I got this error:

PHP Code:

Could not look up internet address for localhost.localdomain.This will prevent Xfc from operating correctly.It may be possible to correct this problem by adding localhost.localdomain to the file /etc/hosts on your system

Ubuntu Installation :: Randomly Upgrade Distro Made Windows7 Unbootable

Jun 10, 2010

Suffice to say I had a dual boot at work with an essential windows 7 and non-essential linux install on it, and randomly upgrading the distro made windows7 unbootable. Cue a missed days work, much embarrassment and ear bashing from those who are convinced Linux is written entirely by communists and hippies. In the end I had to re-install windows, which cut off the ability to boot to ubuntu - although I've left the existing ubuntu partitions as they were.

Although I can get away with allocating a few partitions to ubuntu, I can't really justify fiddling with the MBR based upon this experience. I need a fast boot and persistent data for doing anything further with ubuntu at work, so I'm wondering whether a safer bet would be to setup a usb stick with enough grub to boot to the existing ubuntu install? Not a full usb distribution, just enough to boot into the existing install? how this would be doneIs it really just a grub-install /dev/sdXX (where XX is the usb)?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - GDM And XFCE Clash

Jun 13, 2010

I have 10.04 xubuntu on an old laptop I'm using and have had a problem since the last update I ran. I use aptitude to keep my stuff up to date and ran an update this morning as normal. After the update I used it for a while longer without problems before restarting. When I logged back in my window decorations preferences had been set back to default, but the panel I have at the top of the screen was still there in it's normal state. After everything had loaded though it looked like there was a GDM session running as well, with the standard gnome top and bottom panels on the screen.

The XFCE panel still works fine, but the top GDM one will sometimes pop out over the top of it, as if autohide is enabled, it isn't though. I was somewhat confused as to how this happened so thought I would log back in again and make sure I just had an XFCE session running from the session selector. (My normal setup is to have the auto-startx disabled so that you have to login in a shell and manually startx - just a preference of mine). So I undid this comment and went to login in the GUI and select my session.

When I did my usual username and password would not grant me access, nor would my root password - very worrying. After making sure I had typed it properly I gave up and had to revert to a rescue shell to re-comment out the auto-startx. When I did this I could log back into the shell OK and startx manually as normal (for me). I don't know what updates were performed, but I'm pretty sure it's the update that triggered this behaviour, the only other thing I did was install spotify. Is there a way to track a previous update in aptitude?

Ubuntu :: Play CD Audio In XFCE?

Jan 4, 2010

I was wondering what most xubuntu users use to play audio CDs in XFCE. My wife's laptop runs XFCE, and I had a time this last weekend getting it to actually play a CD correctly. It had been configured to load CDs in "listen" audio player, but as far as I can tell listen doesn't even play CD audio. There was nothing in the menu that allowed loading a disc.I tried setting it to Totem, which worked ok until the first track ended. It then stopped, and there was no way to make it continue and play the second track, or get a track listing. Odd, since it has an option for audio CD in the menu.Next I tried mplayer, which worked for a while, but had to be started from the command line since I couldn't get a disc to load from the GUI. After a couple of attempts at this, mplayer locked up the whole desktop.

Next I tried VLC, since it usually sweeps in and saves the day when all else fails. Aside from the annoyance of having to make about six to eight clicks to get an audio CD playing, it did work except that the audio skipped badly and after a few minutes it just died and wouldn't play any more.I finally found a program that worked: KSCD. It's a KDE application designed solely for the purpose of playing audio CDs, and it worked flawlessly.I don't have a problem running KDE apps on XFCE if I have to, but I just think it's odd I had so much trouble getting a program that would reliably do something so straightforward and standard, and wondered if I'd missed something obvious that would have been a better solution.
