Hardware :: Sound Drivers Not Loading In Fedora 14 / Make Them Work Again?
Dec 30, 2010
I am having trouble loading my sound drivers after removing pulseaudio. (Yes, I did try and reinstall pulse, did it again with ALSA, no luck).
It appears that my sound drivers are not loaded, because cat /proc/asound/cards returns 'no soundcards' and aplay -l returns the same... the ouput was quite different before, I am sure I DO have soundcards and they did work before in Fedora 14.
Any Ideas how can I make the sound drivers load again ?

The only user that can make the sound card work on a F10 x86_64 system is root. For non root users, I am not seeing any error messages when a app tries to use/access the sound card, just nothing plays. As I said, for root everything works as expected. I am sure this is a permission/setup issue, but I have no idea where to start.

I'm running CentOS 5.5 on a Shuttle SG41J1 PLUS barebones system. All is working well, except the sound. I get sound only on the front connector (meant for headsets). With XP on that box I get sound on both the front and the rear connectors. Under XP I see the dialog as attached to this post. It even knows where I have something plugged in. Under CentOS I have two devices listed:0: HDA Intel (Alsa Mixer) 1: IDT ID 76c1 (OSS Mixer) The second one is marked active (*).Any idea on how to make the sound work for the rear connector too ?

I found a solution to my card reader problem in a another fedora post but when I type the code in terminal I get:
all config files need.conf /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
How to write this code so I wont get this error and I can load these modules and also how to edit the modprobe.conf.
The code is below, using fedora 13.
You must load these two modules to work with card reader.
First : Remove the card from the Reader!
AS superuser type in console :
1. /sbin/modprobe tifm_core <enter>
2. /sbin/modprobe tifm_sd <enter>
If you want to automate these modules loading do the following :
edit the /etc/modprobe.conf file
add these :
alias mmc_core tifm_core
alias mmc_card tifm_sd

2. Does I got all drivers instantly installed to my mashine? ATI video drivers, sound drivers ect??
3. Are there any How-To guides which can teach me, how I can improve my desktop? gadgets, 3D desktop ect...?

I still have trouble with the sound system on my Fedora 12 installation on a Dell Laptop. Usually, sound is no issue at all, I can hear sound made in firefox and sound made with skype, but in some cases skype will not produce any sound after firefox made some sound.Again:
1. With firefox I hear some sound (video etc).
2. After that, skype does not work anymore.
i have shutdown firefox and skype, skype and firefox, restarted skype without firefox, but without succcess. skype did not make any sound.I even checked is there is something open with /dev/snd and /dev/dsp with lsof, and removed everything related. The I repeated step1: No success. The only way I was able to hear something from skype again was to restart the whole computer! Is there ANY way to handle this by software WITHOUT the need of restarting the computer each time I have these problems? Since I never had any related problems ever with Windows (for example), it has to be Fedora. And please, don't use worlds like alsa or pulseaudio or something. I just want to know what I have to change in my setup, with my installation etc to make skype work properly again WITHOUT restarting my computer every time.

I'm new to this community and very new to fedora Linux. I'm learning how to use this OS and am enjoying it immensely thus far, but it's not been an easy road lately with this speaker. See, my netbook has really crappy speakers so I picked up an Insignia USB Soundbar so I could get much better sound out of it. However, it won't recognize the USB and I'm assuming this means it can't download the necessary drivers in order to work. Now I've researched this and came across this forum:[URL]...
However, being as new as I am to this, I can't make heads or tails to what this means. If anyone can offer help to what this forum might be saying or how I might be able to get the speakers to work,

Today I finally could install Fedora 15 i686 in my now aging (2005) desktop computer (although I will always think of it as my "new machine", as long as I don't assemble a new one for me):
AMD Sempron 3100+ (1.8GHz)
1GB DDR400
120GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 (128MB)
After I installed F15 my initialpression was that it worked really good on that hardware: everything went fine with GNOME 3 for example, except for some lags in graphics rendering, which I thought would be solved after the graphics card's full power were unleashed with the proprietary NVIDIA driver. For starters I am not sure which Nvidia driver is right for my card (Nvidia 173.X or the regularvidia).I managed to get "working" the 173.X driver but the desktop is even less responsive to begin with, and there appears to be a lot of activity on the hard disk side. So, my question is, which could be causing the performance loss?
A. The "small" RAM.
B. The vintage graphics card.
C. Some problem in the hard drive.
D. A known bug.

I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.

I'm using Fedora 13 and think this behavior comes from Pulseaudio. To make it simple, all my sounds are played in my GNOME session. What's making sense because it's where Pulseaudio is launched. So, when I switch VT (CTRL+ALT+Fx), all sounds from my GNOME session is muted. What's not the actual problem. It's in fact a good behavior. The problem is I use some VirtualBox virtual machines on other VT launched with the xinit command.
These VMs emit sounds but I'm not able to hear them because I'm not on the VT of my GNOME session. But once I get back on my GNOME session I can hear all sound from the VMs. What I want, it's to be able to hear all sounds played by the VT on which I currently am and not everything and only in my GNOME session. How I can accomplish that?

I got a new ASUS EeePC 1015PEM with Windows 7 with the intention to install OpenSuse 11.3 onto it for having a dual booting netbook with enough disk space.I'm installing from an external DVD drive, the checksums of the ISO were ok as well. However, the OpenSuse installer fails at starting up after selecting the action. It hangs, no matter what menu entry I chose, at "loading basic drivers", forever.Because this isn't necessarily an unknown problem I've tried some of the predefined kernel options of the main installer menu. Then I tried some manually entered kernel boot options that helped me in some other installations:
acpi=off, apm=off, CPUFreq=noNone of them seem to have an effect on the installers behaviorI hope that there is people who managed to solve this problem with an actual EeePC model... because I really don't know what I could any more. It's kind of frustrating to not even get past the kernel launch I haven't tried any other distros installation discs, but I don't even intend to. I want OpenSuse because I'm running it on our firms machines as well and don't like shifting between systems.

I'm trying to recover files from a desktop PC which has 4 HD running on a RAID (0+1) set-up. Now it would appear that either Vista Raid has failed (which I think will be the issue) or one or more of the HD partions has become corrupt. So, I have installed Ubuntu Live on USB and have succesfully booted; however, Ubuntu does not appearing to be loading as it is stuck on "loading essential drivers".

I'm trying to load drivers from .tar.bz2 file. I got the .tar opened and extracted to directory ABC. When I try to CD to that directory, I get a message the directory does not exist even tho' I'm looking right at it and the ls command shows it. The full path is user/downloads.ABC.
When I try to run the next command $tar -xvzf DPB_RT2870_Linux_STA_x.x.x.x.tgz I get a message Ubuntu 10.04 cannot find -xvzf. When I try to run the Makefile command locate in the same ABC directory, I again the error message cannot find Makefile.

I am running slackware 13.37. I installed the newest NVIDIA drivers 270.41.19 and now impossible to load Xorg.
I get:
fatal server error:
How I installed the new nvidia drivers:
- removepkg xf86-video-nouveau
- installed xf86-video-nouveau-blacklist-noarch-1.txz for blacklist the nv drivers
- run script nvidia
- run nvidia-xconfig
- reboot
The startx and black screen with errors messages mentioned above.
I run glxinfo | grep render and i get " Error: Unable to open display". Logical since no Xorg
I run dmesg | grep nvidia and I get all the required fields:
- NVIDIA taint kernels
- power state
- enabling device
- PCI INT A
- Setting latency
I have to manually copy the errors messages since my PC is not working.
When I run "find /usr/lib -name *.270.* " I do get the module Same thing when I run "find /lib -name nvidia.ko". I see the nvidia.ko module.

I've loaded Fedora and must say what a nice OS! But I'm having some issues getting the video working correctly so let me jump right into the issue. The video is very garbled and hard to read. can't seem to find a way to correct what would appear to be a driver issue. Here are a list of things tried:
- display works fine with Ubuntu
- display is clear but is chopped off when using an external monitor from onboard vga slot
The video card is an ATI radeon and the linux drivers from the ATI site don't work with the new images that are out yet.

I had originally followed the advice at Mauriat Miranda's Fedora Nvidia Driver Install Guide [URL] for installing nvidia's display driver on my HP Pavilion system 64 bit running Fedora 11. I had used his first method which just installs the relevant kernel module kmod-nvidia from RPMFusion. He also suggested an alternate method: obtaining Nvidia's installer NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.36-pkg2.run and using that. I downloaded it from Nvidia, but I didn't run it.
I recently lost X. This had happened previously after a kernel upgrade, and I just used grub to boot an earlier kernel to recover X, and then installed the upgraded kernel module to fix the problem. But this time, being deeply involved in something else, I panicked slightly, and, using dumb terminal mode I ran the Nvidia installer. It asked me to make various choices and in response to my answers, it decided to compile a new kernel module. This recovered X, but I then compounded things by installing the updated kmod-nvidia.
I realized afterwards that using both methods might create some conflicts, but X seemed to run properly. (I can tell because graphics in the program Maple doesn't work properly with the default drivers provided by Fedora 11.) Since then, when I restart nvidia, I get.
