Ubuntu :: XP To 9.10 Shares?

Feb 20, 2010

I can look at my XP files from my Wubi Karmic with no problems. It would seem with the mix of file systems on my hd that from XP I should see my Karmic shared files. What is up with this? It would be great to have "read/write" both ways.

tourdog@PJK3:~$ sudo fdisk -l
[sudo] password for tourdog:
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders

[Code]....

Nautilus and Samba are running on my Karmic. What am I missing over on XP that precludes seeing my Karmic shared files?

Networking :: Can't View List Of Shares In Nautilus But Can Browse Shares Directly?

Dec 11, 2008

I run opensuse 11 at work. I'm trying to see the list of shares on a "server" that is running windows server 2000. If I try smb://server, it doesn't show any shares, but I can browse directly to it such as smb://server/share1. If I use smbclient, it returns the list of shares correctly. I guess I just don't understand why smbclient shows the list of shared folders, but nautilus cannot.

General :: Administration - Managing SAMBA Shares And Giving User Specific Access For The Shares

Jul 28, 2010

I am working as a Linux administrator in a very small data centre with 5 servers with following routine tasks.

1. Managing SAMBA shares and giving user specific access for the shares.
2. Scheduling backup of some mount points with rsycn to store data in remote hard disk
3. User and group administration, with sudo access.
4. Creating and Managing Xen Virtual machines and giving access to other project teams.
5. Automating some tasks with Shell Scripting.
6. Managing FTP server for user uploads.

I have practiced a lot in my home laptop without RHEL training, Cleared RHCE and LPIC1. I want to do some advanced system admin tasks, but do not have option in my current data centre. With Above skills is it possible to get a job ?

Ubuntu :: NFS - Everything Looks Right But Shares Are Not Appearing?

Jan 6, 2011

I set up some shares but df and Nautilus aren't bringing them up on the other computer. I must be missing something.

Here is how I set up the shares on the one system - "Compaq".
Installed nfs-kernel-server
Modified the nts-common and nfs-kernel-server files:
STATDOPTS="--port 32765 --outgoing-port 32766"

[Code]....

I've also run rpcinfo on the ASUS system but with the IP address of Compaq, getting the same results. Which is good right?

I can ping back and forth. I've successfully run SSH on the ASUS machine from the Compaq machine. I'm not sure what to do now. Could this be a permissions issue? I'm using the fist user on each system.

Ubuntu Networking :: Windows Cannot See Shares ?

Aug 1, 2010

Simply share a printer in a small, secure home network spread over 5 or 6 machines running mostly windows (98 through Win7) but using the UBUNTU box as the host for the printer.

The network has basic connectivity. I have no problem pinging any box from any box. Or surfing from any box.

From UBUNTU box, can see and browse Windows Workgroup no problem.

Windows machines see the announcement of UBUNPRIN but cannot connect. Cannot seem to authenticate. I'm thinking that I have the share set up with NO security.

security = SHARE

And

map to guest = Bad User

Adding some terminal output and the smb.conf file...

Ubuntu :: Cannot Browse Windows Shares

Jun 18, 2011

I have been quite frustrated searching around for others that have had the same problems as I have had an what solutions are available. It appears there is a plethora of issues surrounding file sharing between Ubuntu and Windows machines; but things work prefectly for some and not for others.

The specific problem that I have having is that I cannot access file shares from any of the Windows 7 machines on my network. I use a Windows 7 machine for the main source of files that I like to access from other machines on the network. I do not normally access it from other Windows 7 machines through a Homegroup (I have removed the Windows 7 PC from the homegroup while trying to figure this out as well) - I normally just browse the network via the Windows 7 machine.

Here is what I'm doing (and seeing):

1. Click on home folder icon on Unity's launcher

2. Click "Network" in the sidepane

3. Wait a long time (like 40 seconds or so). "Windows Network" is the only folder/icon showing up in the "Network" folder once it shows anything.

4. Click on "Windows Network"

5. "WORKGROUP" shows up

6. Click on it

7. There is a delay with no visual indication (other than nothing happens and clicking in that window does nothing) and then I see "Opening "WORKGROUP" - Click cancel to stop"

8. See "Unable to mount location - Failed to retrieve share list from server"

I ran 'smbtree -N' and see a line for the PC I'm currently using, plus I see the following line for the other two PCs in the workgroup "WORKGROUP" (name is different for other PC):

Code:
\MEDIA-PC
cli_start_connection: failed to connect to MEDIA-PC<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL

I've seen guides to auto-mount certain shares from other projects to specific locations, and I'll probably do this at some point, but I really want to be able to browse the other machines shares.

Code:
session request to 192.168.1.3 failed (Called name not present)
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

Ubuntu :: 10 Can't Access Windows Shares?

Sep 25, 2010

I am running Linux Ubuntu 10.04 and I currently have this computer and another Windows 7 PC connected together in the same workgroup. When I look at the Network on the Ubuntu File Browser, I can see the windows 7 pc there, but when I try to open it, I get the message Password Required - it wants a username, password and domain (the domain box is filled in with the workgroup name). Whatever set of credentials I try to input, the box just pops up again asking for password. Password protected sharing is disabled on the windows 7 pc and I have even tried disabling Windows firewall to no effect. I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux and am therefore completely stuck - what I really want is to access a shared printer connected to the Windows 7 pc from the Linux machine.

When I click to connect to a windows machine ( all of them running XP), it says "connecting to COMPUTERNAME.." It never opens the computer, and it always comes back with an error saying that it failed to connect. I haven't been using ubuntu for very long, so im not as savvy with it as I am on windows. All windows machines can see all ubuntu shares, just not the other way around and I'd like it to be both.

Ubuntu :: Can't Mount NFS Shares With IP Address / Enable This?

Mar 21, 2010

I'm setting up an NFS server on a command line install (9.10) to share a directory for a farmerjoe render farm. My instructions are from code...

I do not have DNS installed. I cannot install a stand alone DNS server on the network which the render farm will run. I cannot point any of the machines in the render farm to the current DNS server. The render farm is on a VLAN (in a design lab) with the NFS server receiving a reserved static IP address and the clients receiving DHCP addresses from a currently running server. After reading this post

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=321926

it seems that I should be able to mount NFS shares using an IP address.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Not Auto-mounting Network Shares?

May 4, 2010

Enviroment:

-server ubuntu 9.04 with samba
-client fresh ubuntu 10.04

ubuntu is not auto-mounting samba shares. Old 9.04 done it without a problem. I need to type sudo mount -a to have samba mounted.

fstab:
//192.168.1.101/www /mokonawww cifs auto,iocharset=utf8 0 0
ls -l
drwxrwxrwx 25 root root 0 2010-05-03 17:44 mokonawww

Tested with diffrent parameters. And another problem also with samba shares, when I edit file from editor (eclipse) after save i got 'file changed dialog'. seems like file is written with some delay ? and timestamp dont agree (its my blind quess). On 9.04 no problems. Tested with 2 instances of Eclipse. One copied from 9.04 and second fresh install. Other editors raport the same problem. Its anoying as hell.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Can't See Shares On 9.10 Samba Server?

May 10, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 9.10 Samba file server. I have set up Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix in a home network which also has Windows XP home and Vista computers already present in the network. The XP and Vista machines have no problem accessing the file shares.

The server is running mhddfs with FlexRaid. The security is set to share level access. I have a hosts allow line in the smb.conf file to permit access to certain IP addresses and have added the 10.04 netbook remix IP address to this hosts allow line.

I cannot access shares from the 10.04netbook remix machine if the hosts allow line is active, but have no problem from the windows machines. If i comment out the hosts allow line, all machines can access the share, including the netbook remix machine. I am fairly new to Linux and would appreciate any help in solving this problem.

Ubuntu :: Bootup Hangs When Trying To Mount NFS Shares

Jun 11, 2010

It mounts OK on the fly (mount /usr/local) but when you reboot, it hangs, presumably forever, saying that "The disk drive /usr/local is not ready, S to skip, M for manual".Pressing S or M does nothing. I then have to turn the machine off, boot off a CD, mount the HD's / partition and remove the fstab entry before I can successfully boot the OS.Having looked at various forums, I have tried some different things like removing the "0 0", putting "auto" in the options. Unsurprisingly perhaps, these made no difference.

This behaviour was noticed on 10.04, but having tested it on 9.10 it does a similar thing on that version too, although on that one you can actually enter a shell at the hang point and edit your fstab.
