i have a ubuntu 10.10 desktop and laptop. i installed samba, and smbfs. i shared a folder on each computer. when i browse the network i can see the laptop from the laptop, and can see the desktop from the laptop, but i cant see the laptop from the desktop. when i try to mount the share it says unable to mount, but mounts it anyway...but, i need to be able to mount it so that rsync will see the shares as a dir on the desktop. i tried manually mounting via smbmount following several threads that i found, and i keep getting error sudo smbmount //192.168.1.78/share /media/laptop Password: Unable to find suitable address
that is as far as i've been able to get. i've looked and have only been able to find threads about windows shares, not between 2 ubuntu machines. and i dont know why laptop can see the desktop but not the other way around. they have identical smb.conf files

When I goto Places->Network sometimes I see the other Windows computers in our house, and sometimes I don't. How do I make this more consistent?
When I double click on the "Windows Network" icon right now, I get "Failed to retrieve share list from server". Sometimes this works and I get to see the shares on the Windows pcs.

I run opensuse 11 at work. I'm trying to see the list of shares on a "server" that is running windows server 2000. If I try smb://server, it doesn't show any shares, but I can browse directly to it such as smb://server/share1. If I use smbclient, it returns the list of shares correctly. I guess I just don't understand why smbclient shows the list of shared folders, but nautilus cannot.

I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.
Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.
What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.
What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.

I am working as a Linux administrator in a very small data centre with 5 servers with following routine tasks.
1. Managing SAMBA shares and giving user specific access for the shares.
2. Scheduling backup of some mount points with rsycn to store data in remote hard disk
3. User and group administration, with sudo access.
4. Creating and Managing Xen Virtual machines and giving access to other project teams.
5. Automating some tasks with Shell Scripting.
6. Managing FTP server for user uploads.
I have practiced a lot in my home laptop without RHEL training, Cleared RHCE and LPIC1. I want to do some advanced system admin tasks, but do not have option in my current data centre. With Above skills is it possible to get a job ?

I successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on 2 laptops (both are identical in terms of hardware). In addition, I connected both of them (using RJ45 cables) to a switch (just a switch; I don't have a router). Can anybody guide me what should I do / what settings should I specify in each laptop in order to be able to SSH from one laptop to another?

We have 5 computers networked with 9.04 installed. On some days, when you click on Place -> Network, then all the computers will show. On other days, like today, it does not show. However, one can ping them and I have been able to print to one computer which has the printer attached. SAMBA is installed on the computers for file and printer sharing.

I have a small home network. Computers A and B are both running Kubuntu Lucid. Computer A has an external USB hard drive attached, partitioned ext3 and mounted to a folder in computer A's home folder. Computer C is running Vista. I installed Samba, and computer C can access all the files on both computers A and B. But using Samba, computers A and B can't see each other OR computer C. That's not really important to me, but they can't
So I installed NFS and got computers A and B talking that way. I like NFS better. It's faster than Samba. BUT, computer B can't access computer A's USB drive, and I need it to do that. When I'm using computer B and I click on the folder the drive is mounted to, the file manager just shows the folder as empty.

I'm using Ubuntu on my laptop but I'm having a small problem. The network is working fine except for the fact that I can't reach anything on my LAN (can't even ping the router), but everything on the outside works just fine. I can even visit my webserver if I type my public IP.
Where should I begin looking for faults?
Here, enjoy some data. I'm using my wlan0 interface, not sure whether eth0 works or not.

I want to be able to access my desktop from work so I first set up a DNS. I can ssh into my own computer and using the ip address but when I try to ssh using my DNS (this is from my home wireless which is Linksys E2000), I get the following error:
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
debug1: Connecting to ****.com [74.79.145.28] port 50000
debug1: Connection established.
debug1: identity file /home/andy/.ssh/id_rsa type -1
[Code].....
I set up the settings on the Linksys to accept DDNS but I am thinking there might be something else I overlooked? I do not understand completely what is happening to debug this. It seems like it initially accepts the connection and then something strange occurs.

Just to gain access to one of my computer across the house I use VNC a lot but the computer changes its IP address every so often that I refuse to just get up and check it. Without giving that computer a static IP address, is there a way to hunt down the computer's IP?

Simply share a printer in a small, secure home network spread over 5 or 6 machines running mostly windows (98 through Win7) but using the UBUNTU box as the host for the printer.
The network has basic connectivity. I have no problem pinging any box from any box. Or surfing from any box.
From UBUNTU box, can see and browse Windows Workgroup no problem.
Windows machines see the announcement of UBUNPRIN but cannot connect. Cannot seem to authenticate. I'm thinking that I have the share set up with NO security.
security = SHARE
And
map to guest = Bad User
Adding some terminal output and the smb.conf file...

One is able to file and printer share using SAMBA and a windows 7 laptop. The other machine is unable to either do file sharing via Samba or SSL file sharing between the two Ubuntu machines.

I'm having some trouble addressing computers by name. I've just upgraded most my my box's to Lucid, and it was all working fine, but suddenly stopped - not quite sure why, or what I did, but I need it to come back! At first I thought it was my old router dying (which it was) but a new router hasn't helped.
I've now moved DHCP from the router to my server, and that's working fine, giving out static IPs from MAC addresses, and so forth, but I still can't address anything by name. My server is on 192.168.100.1 and called myth-server, if I

However when I attempt to connect using the IP address on the network, it connects instantly. smb://192.168.1.101/ Why doesn't it connect using the computer's name? What am I doing wrong?

I have two computers, a laptop and a workstation, both running linux (Ubuntu and Fedora). For some reasons, it's handier for me to work from the laptop, accessing the workstation only from remote. At present, I have to connect to the workstation using a very complicated system that implies VPN + ssh passing through the internet. It works, but it would be far easier and faster if I could set up a direct connection between the two computers. Unfortunately, I can't use the ethernet ports or wi-fi (it's a long story why, but I really can't).I own a usb data transfer cable, but I don't know how to use it.

I keep getting the "Unable to Mount Location Failed to mount Windows share" error. I've tried the solutions posted by dmizer here and nothing works.Random true facts:I can successfully connect to folders shared on my Windows XP computers from either windows computer.I can successfully connect to folders shared on my Windows XP computers from either ubuntu computers.Neither of my windows computers cannot connect to folders shared on either ubuntu computer.Neither ubuntu computer can connect to folders shared by the other ubuntu computer.I REALLY need to get samba to work since I have other Windows computers on my network.

Alright so i'm sure it's been talking about millions of times, but im fresh with linux so im hoping to get a good answer to what im thinking.so to start the question is can i link a laptop to a desktop? reason is the laptop is decent enough to power a system, over 1ghz, 512ram, 40gb HDD..desktop is like..P3 500mhz 256 ram uhm i believe larger than 40gb.i also have two externals i currently use for my everyday laptop. 250GB fat32, 1TB NTFS.i would be willing to give one up for the server obviously to hold music ~90GB and obviously growing. preferably just the 250.It would mostly be shared with my own laptop which runs Ubuntu11.04/Win7. PS3 also if possible, not necessary.I'm thinking of putting Debian on the old system, i put it on the laptop so far, runs very nice. but it truely has nothing, and i didn't really select anything on install because i hit the enter button for the check boxes of servers by accident lol.
It would be setup via ethernet to my home modem (bell wireless modem).I would be willing to use one or the other as the server, i dont have to like the laptop and desktop together. the desktop simply has my 7.1 soundcard so im trying to keep it in the mix. i suppose i could put them together at the modem to ethernet them in.not sure what else i should describe! hopefully that gives it a good kickstart and some brilliant answers!

I've recently switched to Ubuntu from debian, and I'm now running a fresh install of 9.04 32 bit. I have a Windows XP media computer which I would like to be able to browse using smb://. This worked fine on my debian system, but I cannot get it to work on ubuntu. The windows XP machine has a couple of shares, e.g Music. I can access the Music share via smb://, but I cannot write to it. Nautilus just says "Permission denied". I can also see the default shares, e.g. E$, but if I try to open them I am prompted with a password, but no matter what I enter it seems to have no effect. How to proceed?

Today I can't see any other machines from ubuntu. I haven't changed any settings in Ubuntu, and nothing has been changed on the network, but yesterday it worked fine and today it doesn't.
