My university has a central leased line that is split into wired and wireless. While plugged into the wired network i can access all the windows shares. However when on the wireless network, i cant access the wired shares. Windows laptops can however access them, but directly entering the share name ( \share-name)
I am using Ubuntu 10.04.
I've been running a Samba server under RedHat 8 for five years without a hiccup. I want to cut over to a F10 box but cannot get shares accessible. smbclient attempts fail over NT password error. SELinux is disabled. Server is visible on the network. Users require no password access to shared data.

1. Managing SAMBA shares and giving user specific access for the shares.
2. Scheduling backup of some mount points with rsycn to store data in remote hard disk
3. User and group administration, with sudo access.
4. Creating and Managing Xen Virtual machines and giving access to other project teams.
5. Automating some tasks with Shell Scripting.
6. Managing FTP server for user uploads.
I have practiced a lot in my home laptop without RHEL training, Cleared RHCE and LPIC1. I want to do some advanced system admin tasks, but do not have option in my current data centre. With Above skills is it possible to get a job ?
I am trying to access a shared printer connected to my Win7 PC from a laptop running Lucid Lynx. I have Samba installed and configured okay (I think) and I can browse the Ubuntu laptop from Windows but when I try to access shares on the Win7 machine I get a message NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL.
I've reviewed the security settings on the Win7 machine and tried turning off the firewall. I can see the Win7 computer on my network and ping it from the Ubuntu laptop but I cannot access shared folders or the printer.
At, or around, the time of upgrading from Lucid to Maverick, shares on some of my nfs servers have become inaccessible:

The share is hosted on a PopcornHour Network Media Tank, running a Linux system. With Lucid, I was able to access the share without any problems, both in Nautilus and from terminal. I can still access the share from other nfs clients - it's just ubuntu/Maverick which exhibits this problem. I have tried reverting to older firmware on the PopcornHour but that doesn't make any improvement.
Was there some significant change in nfs with the Maverick release, or have I misconfigured something?
Running Ubuntu 10.10 M-M..Running Network, my machine sees my Windows Workgroup, and even the machines on the workgroup. When I try to access those machines, I get a message "Failed to retrieve share list from server." I've been able to mount other machines by using straight IP accesss, but that is of little use since IP addresses are not Static.

I CAN access from my XP and Win7 virtualboxes.and also from another win7 on the house.. So server is working good aparently.This is all i modified from the default config file:

when I try to access the shares from a Win98 laptop. The server name shows up in the Network Neighborhood (freaking childish names!) but when I double-click it, Win98 keeps asking me for the password for the \SHOPIPC$ connection. I have deleted the .pwl file on the Win98 and logged in using the same user/pass combination as I do on the Linux. On the Linux, I ran 'smbpasswd -a derek' and supplied my password.Windows XP sees the server just fine, but Windows 98 just does not want to play nice. Is there any thing that I can do to fix this without breaking the connection to the XP box or the Linux laptop?

So every time i try to connect, pcman ask me for pw. How to configure pcman to dont ask me for pw? I have tried linux mint live usb and ubuntu live usb with same result.

"Well, I've lasted a lot longer than usual before resorting to asking around, but I've finally gone delightfully mad. I've been trying to access shares based on Windows 7 Ultimate with limited user access on said shares. I've managed to get into my XP machine, another mate's Vista machine and various Linux boxes with no issues, but that's only for shares that are accessible by everyone. The moment I try to get into a share that requires user credentials, I get "Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED"
If I try to access restricted shares (be it machine or folder) through Nautilus, I will get a user logon prompt, but it fails. Using smbclient results in just as little success, and now I'm munching through O'Reiley's Samba manual from '99, after realising that I need to basically learn Samba in its entirety to have a hope in hell at getting this to work. The trouble is though, every HOWTO and relevant forum post I get my hands on all seem to concentrate more on the server side of things, and usually servering from a linux box, not the other way around as I'm trying to.
The above Windows 7 machine won't even allow me to view its share contents, whereas the XP machine will allow me to browse, but won't allow me to access folders with restricted access. I'm pretty sure there aren't any major issues with the way the Windows 7 machine is setup, as it can be accessed with logon from my Xbox, Ubuntu machine, XP and Vista, with only Fedora having problems getting in as it constantly fails logon. What I'm trying to establish is, if Ubuntu can get in, is there something in my Fedora samba config I'm missing that's preventing me access? Ok this is a really weird issue because of the way it played it out. I have been researching it off and on for weeks now trying to figure it out and have come up with nothing. Basically when I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) I was able to access the shared files on my Windows 7 (64 bit) computer perfectly once I changed the domain name in Samba. However I wasn't able to access my Ubuntu shares from Windows 7. After researching for a while to figure that out, I found this:[URL]... Boom! Instantly I could access my Ubuntu shares without a problem from Windows 7.
However after I did this something happened where I could no longer access Windows 7 files from Ubuntu. Unfortunately I am not sure if the change happened immediately or some time later. When I go Places > Network I see the name of my Ubuntu computer (Living-Room) and my Windows computer (Nick-PC) as well as a folder called "Windows Network." When I open Nick-PC it brings up a dialog box saying a password is required. There are three text entry fields and a couple option:
Username: Nick
Domain: NRAU
Password: [not filled in]
_ Forget password immediately
_ Remember password until you logout
_ Remember password forever
The password field has to be filled in and I have tried every option. Each time it thinks for a second and then just pops the same dialog box again.
Everything was working well between my Windows 7 shares and all three of my Ubuntu machines. I just replaced my buggy belkin router with a Netgear one and now none of the Ubuntu machines can open my windows box through Nautilus. All three (one 10.04, 2 10.10) can see the Windows box but when I click on it I get the never ending password prompts. My Mac can access the Windows 7 machine fine, and all three Ubuntu boxes can access the shares with CIFS/autofs. I just can't browse the available shares using Places->Network. I'm lead to believe something on Win 7 reset when I changed the router but after two days I'm at a loss as to what it could be.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI marked this solved when I discovered, after much reconfiguring, I had a faulty Netgear router - I just thought I'd save you reading all this to find the answer.I have 3 machines at home all running Lucid. All have Samba and shared folders but I can't access files on any machine from any other. This worked ok when they were running Karmic. I'm also unable to set up printing across the network from the two machines without local printers. The main machine has 2 printers connected via USB, the others are using WiFi. I'm not using firewalls on any machine.
Filesharing
On any machine I go to Places, Network and Nautilus opens at network:/// and shows me 'Windows Network' I open that and see the Workgroup folder which I open and see the folder is empty. (I did see the 3 machines before I completely removed Samba and re-installed a few minutes ago)
Printing
On one of the remote machines I go to Add Printer, Select Device, Network Printer, Windows Printer via Samba, Browse but I can't see the machine with the printers attached in the Workgroup. Another clue is that when I look at the printer properties, policies on the main machine all 3 boxes are ticked, Enabled, Accepting jobs (but it says Not published) and Shared.

I have a home network and I use Samba to share files. Now when I am on the network, I can see the shares just fine, but if I use a crossover cable, I cannot see or access the folders or files.My goal is to use a crossover cable from one computer with clonezilla to my server in order to use Samba to make an image of my workstation and save the image on my server.But everytime I try to connect with clonezilla I get a persmissions error and the share will not mount. I tried going to the shell and mounting as root, but that did not work either.
I have another server which is only a console and it works though I am unsure why. The share though is a mounted usb drive while on the one that does not work, it is on the internal hard drive.I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or anything I could try to narrow down the problem. Oh, I can access the share using ssh, but not samba. One other thing, the shares are set to allow read/write access to everyone so I don't see why I can not access it.
I run opensuse 11 at work. I'm trying to see the list of shares on a "server" that is running windows server 2000. If I try smb://server, it doesn't show any shares, but I can browse directly to it such as smb://server/share1. If I use smbclient, it returns the list of shares correctly. I guess I just don't understand why smbclient shows the list of shared folders, but nautilus cannot.

I am a Linux newbie, and this is my third attempt in 5 years to become a regular user, and drop microsoft once and for all. Unfortunately, I am having difficulties. Normally it's a good way to learn, but I've been spinning my wheels for 4 days on one problem. It's compounded by the fact that I'm just learning even basic commands. So, please be patient.I have 3 machines.
1)tabletop with Fedora 13, Name: Trout, wired network connection
2)tabletop with winxp, name: bdc, wired network connection
3)laptop with winxp, name: bclaptop, wireless network connection
From Trout, I can access share folder named 'share' on bclaptop. I can also access 'shareddocs' on bdc.From both Xp machines I can access the other xp machines shared folders, but cannot access the shares on Trout, these shares names are 'share' and 'lshare'. On Trout GUI file browser if I go to 'Network' find 'Trout' (looking at itself on the network) I get "Unable to mount location: failed to mount windows share".
I can ping any other machine from any machine using either it's name or IP address. The windows machines do see Trout. The Linux shares can be seen in XP's 'My Network Places'.The network is on a 2-wire router/modem. The original windows network name (workgroup?) is 'Timber'. The workgroup created by Samba is 'mygroup'. They appear to be different workgroups, and Trout is in 'mygroup', and xp machines are in 'Timber'. I don't understand this part enough to know if this is significant.I "believe" I have the permissions wide open for 'lshare', but not 100% certain on any of this (newbie), so ask anything, please. I fumbled through Samba trying first to do it with text editor, then ended up with GUI Samba Editor. Looks to me like services smbd and nmbd are running. The Samba Editor made a rather large smb.conf file, so I'll just put what I think is relevant

I am running Linux Ubuntu 10.04 and I currently have this computer and another Windows 7 PC connected together in the same workgroup. When I look at the Network on the Ubuntu File Browser, I can see the windows 7 pc there, but when I try to open it, I get the message Password Required - it wants a username, password and domain (the domain box is filled in with the workgroup name). Whatever set of credentials I try to input, the box just pops up again asking for password. Password protected sharing is disabled on the windows 7 pc and I have even tried disabling Windows firewall to no effect. I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux and am therefore completely stuck - what I really want is to access a shared printer connected to the Windows 7 pc from the Linux machine.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy first post, having only installed 11.04 at the weekend on one of my old PCs.Everything is up & running pretty well, I have a 100BT home network with 4 Windows XP PCs and a Synology DS211j server.I can see & access these other shares from Ubuntu, but it's so slow to connect, approx. 45 seconds each time, compared to almost instant from any of the XP machines.Could someone suggest how this performance could be improved?

All the other comps in the house are windows 7, and I want this box to be my file server, with two 1 TB HDD plugged into it via USB, but I can't get the damn samba to allow access to everyone. I recently upgraded my ubuntu samba fileserver to 10.04 along with increasing the size of my RAID 1 /home directory.I am using the same smb.conf file setup I have used on intrepid ibis setup and hardy heron setup before that.On my new setup, I can see the ubuntu server on my windows 7 machines, but I can't see the shares and can't access them.In checking the logs (/var/log/samba), one log continues to look for a printer share from one Windows machine that I have not set up on samba yet.
I have found a few people who have reported similar problems online, even a few who have filed bugs, but then they say "my computer started working suddenly. I don't know what happened." so they closed the bug. or "my computer started working after I rebooted my machine." I have rebooted all machines on the network. That doesn't fix it.
I can see mycomputer on the network, but not the share. Not sure what to do, why isn't the share available?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.04 set up on my acer revo, this is connected to a wireless router via ethernet. Next door, is a pc that is running windows XP, and an original XBOX running XBMC. Those are connected via a crossover cable. The XP machine connects to the web wirelessly using my router, and the connections are bridged for XBMC's TV show scrappers. The idea is we use the revo for downloading as it consumes a relatively small amount of electricity. I have two external 1tb drives connected to the revo with Tv shows and movies, I would set up a network share so the XP machine could see them, and the xbox would be able to share the videos present.
I have installed samba, right clicked the drives in question and clicked the sharing options. I have ticked to allow guest access, and write access. This worked! I the shared the /home directory on the revos harddrive using exactly the same method. This worked. However I was no longer able to access the External drives. The UID has remained the same. I then tried unsharing /home, still no joy. Tried resharing /home Home now works, but still the externals don't.
So I setup the newest Ubuntu on my old desktop on a 30g HD and have 2 200G HDs with a ntfs file system on those two. I got SSH and FTP configured, then went on to setup Samba.I have it (seemingly) set up well. /dev/sb1 gets mounted on /data1 /dev/sc1 gets mounted on /data2.I want anyone connected to my router to be able to see this machine and be able to read and write to both shares.
I configured WINS on my laptop to point to the linux box. and i've seen the pc in question (TECH-PC) in "My Network Places" on both of our laptops.Long story short, I try to connect to my network share and it says i don't have permission and i need to contact my network admin. This computer is the only one with Linux installed, the rest are windows-OS.Let me know if you need more info, pretty stumped here, have searched, read, scrapped my install and started from scratch, maybe i need to sleep on it
I am currently trying to set up a small network in which my first computer has a NFS share going to three other computers. I have been able to set up this share correctly, however I am having problems in granting full Read/Write permissions to all user accounts across the computers.
At the moment I am not using NIS or any-other account synchronization tool and I am wondering if there is another way, without the need of the mentioned tools.
