Ubuntu :: Cannot Browse Windows Shares

Jun 18, 2011

I have been quite frustrated searching around for others that have had the same problems as I have had an what solutions are available. It appears there is a plethora of issues surrounding file sharing between Ubuntu and Windows machines; but things work prefectly for some and not for others.

The specific problem that I have having is that I cannot access file shares from any of the Windows 7 machines on my network. I use a Windows 7 machine for the main source of files that I like to access from other machines on the network. I do not normally access it from other Windows 7 machines through a Homegroup (I have removed the Windows 7 PC from the homegroup while trying to figure this out as well) - I normally just browse the network via the Windows 7 machine.

Here is what I'm doing (and seeing):

1. Click on home folder icon on Unity's launcher

2. Click "Network" in the sidepane

3. Wait a long time (like 40 seconds or so). "Windows Network" is the only folder/icon showing up in the "Network" folder once it shows anything.

4. Click on "Windows Network"

5. "WORKGROUP" shows up

6. Click on it

7. There is a delay with no visual indication (other than nothing happens and clicking in that window does nothing) and then I see "Opening "WORKGROUP" - Click cancel to stop"

8. See "Unable to mount location - Failed to retrieve share list from server"

I ran 'smbtree -N' and see a line for the PC I'm currently using, plus I see the following line for the other two PCs in the workgroup "WORKGROUP" (name is different for other PC):

Code:
\MEDIA-PC
cli_start_connection: failed to connect to MEDIA-PC<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL

I've seen guides to auto-mount certain shares from other projects to specific locations, and I'll probably do this at some point, but I really want to be able to browse the other machines shares.

Code:
session request to 192.168.1.3 failed (Called name not present)
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

Networking :: Can't View List Of Shares In Nautilus But Can Browse Shares Directly?

Dec 11, 2008

I run opensuse 11 at work. I'm trying to see the list of shares on a "server" that is running windows server 2000. If I try smb://server, it doesn't show any shares, but I can browse directly to it such as smb://server/share1. If I use smbclient, it returns the list of shares correctly. I guess I just don't understand why smbclient shows the list of shared folders, but nautilus cannot.

Ubuntu :: Cant Browse Network Shares In File Dialogue Box From A Web Browser?

Aug 10, 2010

While in a web browser I'm trying to attach a file which resides on a network location. The file dialogue doesn't allow me to browse any network location. I've mounted the volume and added locations to favorites. I've also tried entering an smb:// path. This only happens in browsers, both FFnd Chrome, some examples would be attaching a file in gmail, yousendit, etc. I can browse and work off the network normally in desktop apps.

Networking :: Unable To Browse Samba Servers And Shares?

Mar 26, 2011

clean install of Slackware 13.1 64-bit. From day 1 I have been unable to browse Samba servers and shares on my home network. NFS, FTP, SSH, etc all seem to be working fine. I've been updating it regularly in case this was a bug, but I'm not so sure any more.

Reboot in WinXP sp3, I can browse fine. My wife's Win7 laptop works fine. My old Slack 12.2 system worked fine. I have not made any changes to the network other than adding this computer to the mix.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Cannot Browse Windows Network Or Connect To Windows Shared Folders

Dec 22, 2010

I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.

Ubuntu :: Can't Browse Through Windows

Feb 2, 2010

I just booted up, after making a flash USB for a test (didn't work) so I booted as normally into Ubuntu 9.10 (not dual boot). When I get back on, there's this... I don't know how to explain it. If someone can think of a better way to explain this, I'll change the title to be a bit more helpful, and easier to search for those who have a similar problem.

I can't browse through windows (such as with Alt + Tab, or even just clicking on another window), nothing comes to the front, and stays as is. I've not touched my graphics / display settings, so the only thing I can think of, is when I was going through the boot-up applications, but I doubt I disabled anything that would have been graphics and GUI based, or the compizconfig-settings-manager disrupted something. I've ye to test anything, it's rather early.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can Browse Windows Network / But Not Other Linux Boxes

Mar 29, 2010

I noticed tonight when I go to Places, Network, it will bring up an icon for Windows Network, and I can drill down to my Windows box. But I can't see the other Linux box (a laptop running Kubuntu), and the same behavior occurs on the laptop when trying to view the Linux desktop. The laptop is connected wirelessly, if that makes a difference. Each box can ping the others, but I don't yet know how to browse one Linux box from the other Linux box.

Server :: Cannot Browse Samba Share Remotely From Windows 7

Feb 20, 2011

I wanted to setup a Samba share on a box running Ubuntu 10.4 and share it to Windows 7 computers throughout my house. When I browse the Network (thru Windows), I can see "Media Devices" that correspond with the locations of where I will put the media. The problem is that I have been unable to copy the media to the Ubuntu server because I cannot see the Ubuntu "computer" from Windows 'Network'.

All computers are on the same Workgroup

Running the following command line from Windows returns no errors and lists the samba share:

Using the testparm command on my smb.conf returns only one error (which previous googling seems to indicate is not an issue). The following is what was returned by the command:

Ubuntu Networking :: Windows Cannot See Shares ?

Aug 1, 2010

Simply share a printer in a small, secure home network spread over 5 or 6 machines running mostly windows (98 through Win7) but using the UBUNTU box as the host for the printer.

The network has basic connectivity. I have no problem pinging any box from any box. Or surfing from any box.

From UBUNTU box, can see and browse Windows Workgroup no problem.

Windows machines see the announcement of UBUNPRIN but cannot connect. Cannot seem to authenticate. I'm thinking that I have the share set up with NO security.

security = SHARE

And

map to guest = Bad User

Adding some terminal output and the smb.conf file...

Ubuntu :: 10 Can't Access Windows Shares?

Sep 25, 2010

I am running Linux Ubuntu 10.04 and I currently have this computer and another Windows 7 PC connected together in the same workgroup. When I look at the Network on the Ubuntu File Browser, I can see the windows 7 pc there, but when I try to open it, I get the message Password Required - it wants a username, password and domain (the domain box is filled in with the workgroup name). Whatever set of credentials I try to input, the box just pops up again asking for password. Password protected sharing is disabled on the windows 7 pc and I have even tried disabling Windows firewall to no effect. I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux and am therefore completely stuck - what I really want is to access a shared printer connected to the Windows 7 pc from the Linux machine.

I can access the Music share via smb://, but I cannot write to it. Nautilus just says "Permission denied". I can also see the default shares, e.g. E$, but if I try to open them I am prompted with a password, but no matter what I enter it seems to have no effect. How to proceed?

When I click to connect to a windows machine ( all of them running XP), it says "connecting to COMPUTERNAME.." It never opens the computer, and it always comes back with an error saying that it failed to connect. I haven't been using ubuntu for very long, so im not as savvy with it as I am on windows. All windows machines can see all ubuntu shares, just not the other way around and I'd like it to be both.

Ubuntu :: Auto-Mount The Windows Shares?

Jan 11, 2011

Im setting up a Mythbuntu box as a HTPC, and I want to be able to stream my media from my Windows box to the Mythbuntu box. I got the windows shares mounted fine, everything works. But I want them to auto mount so I modded my /etc/fstab file to mount the share. The problem is the Mythbuntu box uses wifi, and during boot the computer can't connect to the Windows box, and it hangs on

Quote:

Error while mounting /blah/blah/ press s to skip or m for manual recovery and I am planning on not having a kbd hooked up to this computer once it is done.

1) Is there a better way to auto mount Windows shares - one that does the mounting after the computer is booted up? Furthermore, the Windows box may be off, so I want it to just skip the mounting on error.

2) Right now when I mount the share, I have to specify the Windows computer by its IP address. If I do it by PC name, it doesn't work, says it can't find the computer. Is there a way to mount using the computer name, so that if my router decides to give the windows box a new IP I wont have to reload everything?
