I've installed wubi on my D: partition of a vista os. Vista is installed on the C: I can see the vista partition if I mount it but can only see the wubi 10.04 system files on the data partition (D: ). No option to mount it either. Also curious to know if its possible to automatically mount the c: on startup.

Argh all that downloading for nothing, it fails when it is around 98% finished with install! Giving a permission denied error, yet that makes no sense because I am running as Administrator account in Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit on amd64).
BTW I followed the recommended fix on the WubiGuide and it doesn't work.
It says to copy the ISO file (ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso) into the same directory as the wubi.exe installer file. I did that and it still goes through the whole long process of downloading the ISO file and gives the same error at the end

I installed Ubuntu a few days ago from WUBI, but now I want to make it take the whole partition and I don't want to lose any files and software I have downloaded (Synaptec/Software Manager ) How can I do that ?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu in WUBI inside Windows, my first question is, can you do a full install to a new partition through the WUBI installation? Or would it be better to partition the disk, and just install Ubuntu, then deal with the MBR issue (been a while since I had a normal install, maybe the boot problems are gone?)? And is there any actual advantage to doing a stand alone install, while still dual booting Windows? Is there any gain from it versus the WUBI install I am running now?

I had given it 20GB of space but over the months my C: has become almost full, so I need to move the Wubi install to another partition (say E. I looked around for instructions on how to do it, but I could only find instructions for grub-legacy (that ask you to modify C:/ubuntu/disks/boot/grub/menu.lst) and not grub2 (which doesn't have menu.lst) used by 10.04.
how to move a 10.04 Wubi install to another partition in Windows is appreciated. Kindly note that I'm not trying to remove Wubi and convert it to an actual installation, but rather simply move it to a different location in Windows.
I have been using Lucid Lynx for almost 2 weeks and have got everything working, thanks to the "ubuntu" spirit in this forum. Now I am ready to upgrade my Wubi install to its separate partition. I have searched the forum and googled to find a way to do this, but I am still stuck.
I used lvpm (despite knowing that there is no confirmation of its working on Lucid Lynx), it didn't work. The installation happened alright but it wasn't able to show up the login screen (GDM?). It was stuck around the screen before that (Xsplash?).
There is this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 that explains this process very well but remains silent on Lucid Lynx version.
I am sure there must be many other first timers who wanted to get their feet wet the easy way using wubi and would like to make it "permament" OS on their computers.
Is there anyone who can suggest if :
1. There is any way I can still use lvpm to transfer wubi install to separate installation (Ubuntu 10.04 release) ?
2. Any other way I can do this ??
I have two hard drives, a 320GB and a 1.5TB. The first hard drive has two windows partitions. The first one is the main vista partition and the second one is one for factory restore (its an HP pavilion).
So wanted to install both ubuntu and ubuntu studio on the second hard drive, so I allocated about 1TB as an ntfs partition that I wanted to be accessible by both vista and ubuntu. So I have 400GB left for both distros. I have partitioned off two 40GB partitions for the two roots and I'm sharing one large home parititon and I put a swap partition at the end of the disk.
After I got through the second installation (ubuntu studio) vista no longer recognised the ntfs partition on the second disk. I thought maybe the install botched the boot sector, so I used testdisk to try to fix it, but it hasn't done any good. I do not want to format the second drive again because I have data on there I transferred over from an old hard drive before I installed ubuntu.
I tried to 'initialise' the disk in vista, but that just wiped the partition table so I had to fix that with testdisk on a live cd
Does anyone have any idea how i could possibly fix this problem or what winblows is thinking? I want to be able to read the partition in windows.

I succesfully installed the 'Ubuntu 10.04' 5 months ago but I had to unsintall it because apparently I got a virus when in a google search I clicked one video of cryptozoology (won't tell) and the screen went black or something. For the first time that pc frozen 3-4 times, so I was afraid I got a virus.Now I want to install the Ubuntu again but the Wubi windows keeps asking me for my password to continue.Okay, the problem is that I am using the correct pasword but still is asking me to use the correct one.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have understood that Vista does not always play nice with third party partitioners and that it was best to use the tools *within* Vista to change its size.
I do not know, but the same might apply to Windows 7? Anyway I understand Windows 7 also has its own resize tools.
My advice to newcomers with Vista (or Windows 7) has been to use the Windows inbuilt tools to resize and then to leave un partitioned space on the drive, because until recently the Ubuntu Live CD has included an option 'Install into un partitioned space' or similar. Which was very easy.
However, with Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop CD the same option does not exist, so for beginners, or any nervous newcomer, the only practical option in most cases is to use the 'resize' facility in the Ubuntu installer.
This is a circular situation, if the Ubuntu facility resize is recommended to be avoided.
I would very much like to avoid having to tell them to use the 'advanced' option. Most of them are pretty jittery, from having used Windows for years.
I am aware that the 10.10 Alternate CD still includes 'install into un partitioned space'. Do I now tell people they need both a Live CD for initial tests and then also an Alternate CD for install?
They would see the install invitation in the Desktop CD live session and have to disregard it.
The Ubuntu 10.10 installer is, on the face of it, getting more friendly towards nervous newcomers.
Are the warnings about third party partitioners still relevant?
Im currently a Windows Vista user, and would like to get test some linux distributions - Ubuntu is one of them, Ubuntu Studio is another. Iinstalling muliple OS's becomes overly complicated on my old vista machine. Therefore:
Can I simply turn a regular dualboot into a "fake" triple boot by adding wubi to Vista? Should wubi be installed before the dual boot distro or vice versa? Does it make any difference what the "real" dual boot distribution is? I would like to test Ubuntu Studio (not included in wubi) and OpenSUSE. Is either of them better to test first, because they do a better job in easily replacing an old distribution in a dualboot etc.?
I've two laptops, my main one is Dell inspiron 1545 and for experimental purposes, I use Acer Aspire 5315. I used to be a Redhat linux user from 2001 to 2003 on and off, but lost touch with linux for the past few years. I grew frustrated with windows after my Vista recovery partition in Acer Aspire got corrupted and when I took the laptop for servicing, the service person installed a pirated copy of XP. The laptop constantly overheated and I always received all kinds of warnings from microsoft about using pirated version. I finally decided to buy a new laptop and hence bought Dell inspiron 1545. Too bad I didn't realize I could have switched to linux.
I was suspicious about Windows 7 in my new dell right from the day one and thought of checking linux options available. I was surprised to know the the most popular linux distro now was no longer Redhat or Suse but a relatively newcomer Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a 40GB extended partition and was extremely satisfied with the ease of installation. The hardware detector told me I need to install "Broadcom STA" for my wireless card to work. I installed ATI driver from AMD website and it worked like a charm. Like any linux user, I couldn't resist the temptation to distro hop, so decided to use my old Acer laptop as testbed. The first distro I tried was KDE version of Fedora 12. The splash screen was very impressive and more graphical than Ubuntu's, however the boot time was painfully slow and I ran into a dependency hell while trying to upgrade using Kpackagekit.
I tried Linux mint KDE next and it was impressive, but I was still not completely satisfied. I then tried Opensuse 11.2 KDE and I immediately fell in love with the beautiful look and feel. I was so impressed that I went ahead and replaced the ubuntu in my dell with Opensuse 11.2. However, it was not smoothsailing when it came to hardware detection. After a lot of trials and tribulations, I managed to download Broadcom STA drivers and managed to get my wifi working. I realized that Radeon HD was installed as default and tried to turn on compositing. KDE got stuck and even after cold reboot, didn't recover. I had to re-install the OS and this time I tried to install ATI proprietary driver. But running the driver install script threw up lot of errors and I lost my mouse cursor. I had to re-install the OS again, generate RPM for the ATI driver and install it along with Kernel source, headers, gcc, make, etc... Finally I was able to activate compositing.
I then installed Xen and when I booted to Xen kernel, my mouse cursor again dissapeared, most likely due to non-compatibility of ATI driver. I had to uninstall Xen. I then tried to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.31-15 and again my mouse cursor dissapeared. I had to re-install the entire OS again. I'm so frightened of Kernel updates now. I never had such problems with Ubuntu kernel updates, maybe ATI is more pro-active in releasing new versions of drivers when it comes to Ubuntu.
In-spite of all my hardships, I'm so much in love with Opensuse and KDE. I love it so much that it now runs on both my Dell and Acer. I've removed all the other distros from my Acer. It has been quite a long time since I tried any other distro and I don't even have the faintest desire to distro-hop. Infact, for the past few days I'm so worried about the news of Novell takeover. I really don't want Opensuse to die. It will be a big loss for Linux users.
I have installed ubuntu 11.04 using wubi with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. The operating system works fine. Althoughwhen I boot and choose linux I get an error message during boot which stays forever. I have to shut down using power button and start again when it boots fine.
Another problem is when I restart from ubuntu it restarts back to the desktop but when I shut down, it does not shut down the computer. Stays on with blank screen forever. I am attaching the image of latest error I received on boot.
I wanted to start exploring web development and perhaps hosting my own server as well as learning about linux and all the things that go with it so I downloaded the ubuntu 9.1 Server edition and burned it to a CD. I thought to put it on my Dell laptop as it is newer than my main PC and I could bring it to and fro between class. It had Vista installed and I definitely wanted to keep that in the meantime until I got more familiar with Ubuntu. The laptop has a 320GB hard drive with a 10 GB recovery partition. I went ahead and formatted the 10GB to make room for ubuntu. Also I was able to "shrink" the main windows partition by 16GB to make even more room. I could not combine the two small drives but alas. I had hoped to use the 16GB partition for the main install and the 10GB for a necessary swap drive (I am completely new to all this).
So I reboot on the server CD and get to the partition section. I was following this guide here: [url]
It seemed I did not want to do anything "guided" or "automatic" because the options were listing the entire drive and again i wanted to keep my vista untouched. So I go to manual partitioning and although the guide didn't go into enough detail I went ahead and assigned an "ext2" filetype to the larger partition and a "swap" to the smaller partition. Then I went to write changes to disk and after completing one of the two successfully the installer failed to configure the swap drive. I don't know why. I restarted to make sure windows was OK and surely it was not, as I got the dreaded "missing operating system" screen. I ran the windows recovery CD and lo and behold it could not find any drives at all, much less repair them. The data I had on the vista partition were not particularly vital, but it would be nice to have it back.
So my questions are, is there a way to recovery the windows partition? And how is the correct way to configure a dual boot system with Vista and Ubuntu 9.1 Server edition?
I wanted to install ubuntu via wubi, but i had to format my partitions (can't do it on wubi ) so i used a crappy program(i don't remember the name) to get rid of Backtrack4 , because i wanted windows kept for my mom.So, that was the sorry, i've ended up with a GRUB error 22, and a Backtrack4 CD stuck in my DVD-rom.So my question is: Can somewone tell me how to fix error 22? (i've seen some methods online, but i obviously can't put a Windows CD in my DVD rom because the Backtrack4 DVD is stuck in there.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my girlfriend's lenovo using a live disc. First we tried it out to show her the wireless would work fine (her previous lenovo was not ubuntu friendly at all). She's interested in keeping her windows 7 partition along with the lenovo recovery partition, so I tried doing a dual boot install. I manually moved the cursors setting the disk space on each partition, and we allowed Ubuntu to do the rest. Much to my dismay, the installation failed.
I've done some reading over the internet, and I think in our case it would be best to use a Wubi installation. We're interested in using 10.04, so where can we find a wubi installer of Ubuntu 10.04?
Also, any ideas why the installation might have failed? The iso was downloaded off the ubuntu main site, and we burned it using infrarecorder.
install fedora 11 on Vista I want to keep the windows boot loader and also install on a usb drive or a seperate partition that has 10GB free "install doesn't see partition's". Recently I installed ubuntu and had a major problem with booting, without having the usb drive connected I couldn't boot windows so uninstalled it. I want to install Ubutn-Server-9.04 on a disk.
This old windows-used disk has three patitions:
1 # -- Primary NTFS
2 # -- Logical NTFS
3 # -- Logical FTA32
I plan to install Ubuntu on 1# Partition and override the old OS-Windows7. but the Data on 2# and 3# partition can still be preserved?
Two days ago I repartitioned my laptop HD and added the latest Ubuntu (2.6.35-25-generic) to the existing Vista and existing Ubuntu (2.6.32-28-generic via upgrades from 9.14(?)). Prior to this install it was using Grub with menu.lst from the old/upgrade Ubuntu. After the install the boot menu labels the partition with Vista as the Windows Recovery partition and the recovery partition item is no longer present.
At first I wondered how I could get Vista to boot. I found that SuperGrub cd would boot it OK. Then, it dawned on me that the boot menu item was not the recovery partition, but instead the Vista OS partition mislabelled . Vista loads just fine from it. The recovery partition is no longer listed as it was with Grub/menu.lst. SuperGrub will not boot the recovery partition, showing an error "missing BOOTMGR".

I edited boot/grub/grub.cfg so the boot menu item is labelled correctly, but suspect that it will revert back when there is an upgrade.
I have a system running OpenSUSE 11.3 using the bare server configuration.I had a partition for my /srv directory. All was fine until earlier today. I shutdown my system (to remove an old floppy drive from it). When I rebooted, /srv is emtpy (no files nor directories). This is somewhat vexing, as I had several sites running from there, as well as a fair amount of data.The appropriate partition (/dev/sda3) appears using fdisk. However, there is no mention of it in /var/log/messages.Does anyone know how to recover an Ext4 partition?

Is it dangerous ?) IIRC, it was possible to change partition sizes from the install disk in repair mode (?) But I cannot find that repair mode on the 11.3 install disk. Has it been removed or is it somewhere deeper in the install or update process ?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 250 GB external disk, where there was store a hundred and something GB of data. Pictures, music, documents and TV-shows. It was FAT32. In an attemt to make an live USB drive with openSUSE, I did exactly what I shoulden't do: I mistook the external disk for the the USB drive. Now the external disk has a 700 mb linux partition, while 232.2 GB is unpartitioned. TestDisk from CGSecurity is looking to see if there is a lost partition table there, somewhere. Is there anything I can do? There was no formating, so the data is still there (except for those 650 mb that was overwritten). Is there any way to rebuild the old partition?

I am a total noob when it comes to opensuse. I just read the reviews and comments from forums taht's why I wanna try this alternative. I have 1 physical drive that has two partitions. 1 is dedicated for my windows OS (20 GB) and the other for my data (approx. 100GB).
How can I install opensuse 11.3 to just 1 partition (20GB) and leave my data partition (approx. 100GB) as it is? Can I still view/access/read the files from my data partition after I have successfully install opensuse 11.3 to my Os partition?
Dell Inspiron E1405 - 160 GB drive with 2 partitions - I think only 1 partition was used for windows and ubuntu Used wubi to install 10.04 - both XPP and 10.04 worked fine after repairing the XP install My boyfriend used Referencer (.reflib) in Ubuntu 10.04 to organize and tag about 900 documents. He spent around 9 hours on the project and its VERY IMPORTANT. I am a dumb ***, forgot the project was on the computer and updated to 10.10 via update manager without it backing up. Now I cant boot to XPP or Ubuntu - "error: no such device:", "grub rescue" My main concern is getting the data back. I would rather uninstall WUBI and install Ubuntu on the 2nd partition (wish I would have done this in the first place but 10.04 was my first Ubuntu install and I didn't know any better). I have to get this data back! I have tried the following and cant locate the referencer (.reflib) file or the .docs and .jpgs booted to USB using my 10.10 netbook remix USB install USB stick - I can see the windows files pulled the HD out and connected it to my Ubuntu netbook, an XPH and W7 computers -cant locate data

I have installed also Vista on my PC, but "Documents and Settings" f.e. is void if I mount the Vista partition. In this case its not very important. But a week ago i'd run a XP-Laptop with 9.04 live-CD for backup. That worked fine (The XP was very damaged). I put the 40GB data on my PC through the WLAN during one night without any aid else. All the XP files are well accessible. And I put it back later on a fresh XP.But what would have happen with a Vista-Laptop? Anyone an idea how to reach all Vista or 7 files with a live CD? Or at least from my installed 8.04 to installed Vista.
I think it works alternatively from Win7 running using a USB hard drive adapter if you change the rights on Vista or 7 on the connected hard drive. Not tested.
I am trying to transfer files from a SATA hard drive with Windows Vista (Home Premium) installed on it. Some files I can easily copy over, others just say Access Denied.
I'm sure permissions is part of the issue, unofrtunately Windows is unable to boot at all (surpise surprise) so I can't adjust anything from within in. I know with XP drives I can easily copy and paste onto my Ubuntu machine. I'm using a SATA to USB converter that let's me plug it in and my desktop reads it like an external hard drive.
I've gone into the properties and under permissions it shows my account as having access to Create and delete files under folder access amd "---" under File access. My group and others show None and --- for Folder and File access. I can post a link to a screenshot tomorrow. I've tried to also select Read and Write for File access but it goes back to the dashes before I can apply it.
I am running 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 and do not have the sharing aspect installed. Any questions please feel free to ask me.
Using Ubuntu 10.04 with a Wubi Install. Vista Home Premium is the host. I can access all my partitions and external drives with the exception of my windows partition where Wubi is installed. I have seen some suggestion to go to "places" and click on "host", but there is no "host" listed. My windows install is on sda1 and I believe I need to create a directory for it and then execute a command in the terminal but I have no idea if this correct or what really needs to be done. mount my NTFS windows partition while I am running Ubuntu 10.04 in Wubi.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried to install Ubuntu 9.04 last year but my modem was malfunctioning, so i gave up on Ubuntu, but i got a new modem and installed Ubuntu using wubi, i loved it and ill make it my main OS, but now i have 2 problems:
1.-I tried using lvpm, but i ended up with a 60 GB new.disk and my hard drive has just 30 Gb (30 gb wubi installation and the 60gb from the new.disk)
2.-i dont know how to shrink windows partition and i dont want to loose my config, tweaks and installed apps my hard drive has 230 gb capacity and i want to leave at least 100 gb to windows
I decided to uninstal wubi and im going to install ubuntu the right way.. it just seems easier..
