Argh all that downloading for nothing, it fails when it is around 98% finished with install! Giving a permission denied error, yet that makes no sense because I am running as Administrator account in Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit on amd64).
BTW I followed the recommended fix on the WubiGuide and it doesn't work.
It says to copy the ISO file (ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso) into the same directory as the wubi.exe installer file. I did that and it still goes through the whole long process of downloading the ISO file and gives the same error at the end

I've installed wubi on my D: partition of a vista os. Vista is installed on the C: I can see the vista partition if I mount it but can only see the wubi 10.04 system files on the data partition (D: ). No option to mount it either. Also curious to know if its possible to automatically mount the c: on startup.
I have tried twice to use Wubi to install Xubuntu on a Windows XP machine. Each time the results were the same:
1) Downloads the required stuff. 2) Does some post-download stuff. 3) Says it needs to reboot to finish the installation. -------------- here is where it goes bad ------------- 4) Reboots back into Windows. There is nothing set to choose Xubuntu (no error messages displayed in prior steps).
I have a second computer now. I succesfully installed the 'Ubuntu 10.04' 5 months ago but I had to unsintall it because apparently I got a virus when in a google search I clicked one video of cryptozoology (won't tell) and the screen went black or something. Im currently a Windows Vista user, and would like to get test some linux distributions - Ubuntu is one of them, Ubuntu Studio is another. Iinstalling muliple OS's becomes overly complicated on my old vista machine. Therefore:
Can I simply turn a regular dualboot into a "fake" triple boot by adding wubi to Vista? Should wubi be installed before the dual boot distro or vice versa? Does it make any difference what the "real" dual boot distribution is? I would like to test Ubuntu Studio (not included in wubi) and OpenSUSE. Is either of them better to test first, because they do a better job in easily replacing an old distribution in a dualboot etc.?
I have installed ubuntu 11.04 using wubi with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. The operating system works fine. Althoughwhen I boot and choose linux I get an error message during boot which stays forever. I have to shut down using power button and start again when it boots fine.
Another problem is when I restart from ubuntu it restarts back to the desktop but when I shut down, it does not shut down the computer. Stays on with blank screen forever. I am attaching the image of latest error I received on boot.
I wanted to install ubuntu via wubi, but i had to format my partitions (can't do it on wubi ) so i used a crappy program(i don't remember the name) to get rid of Backtrack4 , because i wanted windows kept for my mom.So, that was the sorry, i've ended up with a GRUB error 22, and a Backtrack4 CD stuck in my DVD-rom.So my question is: Can somewone tell me how to fix error 22? (i've seen some methods online, but i obviously can't put a Windows CD in my DVD rom because the Backtrack4 DVD is stuck in there.
Going into my 5th day on trying to get linux to work on my system. I first tried a backtrack DVD but it failed to install after a kernel panic. I tried using ubuntu 9 and 8 but they both freezed at the livecd menu in bios and gave an i/o error.
So I tried using WUBI but after choosing "UBUNTU" in the windows boot manager after the bios, it fails to load. So i try to uninstall Wubi, and i get this:

I'm guessing there is something very wrong with my pc, due to the i/o errors with both the ubuntu cd's and BT4.
When I try to use Wubi to install Ubuntu it fails on reboot. It seems to run a script on reboot then nothing. I get a command prompt window with the script and the laptop seems to lock up. Only a hard re-boot will restart the system. I do get a dual screen boot prompt Windows/Umbutu but if I choose Umbutu, I get the same command prompt screen and the system is locked up again. Chosing Windows at the boot screen works fine.
I have downloaded wubi.exe to my hard drive. After double clicking the exe and OKing the security dialog, I get a error message box titled: "pyrun.exe - No Disk"The error message reads:"There is no disk in the drive.Please insert a disk into the drive DeviceHarddisk3DR5.There are three buttons: Cancel, Try Again, ContinueClicking any of these buttons simply causes the same message box to pop up over and over. I had a 10.04 Wubi install on my Win7 notebook. I selected the option to upgrade to 10.10 from update manager. It downloaded all the updates, but reported that due to some problem, only a partial upgrade will be possible. I agreed. And now, when I select Ubuntu from the startup OS list, it just shows a blank screen and restarts within 3-5 seconds. What do I do??
just installed ubuntu 9.10 besides the existing windows vista partition. Everything worked smoothly. However, after I let vista go into hibernation and then started up the system again, the grub was unable to load. Instead, I got the command prompt 'GRUB rescue'. When I boot from the live CD and try to open the ubuntu partition on 'places' in the desktop environment, I get the message that it cannot be done because windows has hibernated on the other partition, and that I need to delete the hibernation file. What do I do to get the GRUB to load? Now I am stuck with booting from the CD, and I cannot access Vista at all.
I am trying to install 10.04 with wubi and I encounter a strange error:
At first, everything runs normally. Then I am asked to reboot the system.
After rebooting, Ubuntu starts with a GUI (desktop background, my USB-Mouse is working) and a Window appears ("completing installation" and some advertisement).
A dialog tells me, that the systems tries to set the time (probably from an NTP Server). This is shown with a completion bar, starting at 571% and going up to 800% in several steps. Then it says: "Installation des Grundsystems".
Next steps: creating ext4 file system, copying files ... Again, a progression bar appears, going up to 28%.
Then, an error message appears: "Datei entspricht nicht ihrer Quelle auf der CD/DVD" (file does not match the source on CD/DVD).
It gives me a filename(e.g. /target/usr/lib/smbcquotas) and the choice to Abort/Retry/Skip. I click on "Retry" ("Skip" has exactly the same effekt).
The progress bar goes up to 38%, and I can hear that files are copied. Then the system hangs, showing the desktop wallpaper, mouse functioning. I can only turn it off.
I can try this procedure several times. I even used different disks (one brand new). It always comes to the same end. The only thing that changes are the file names ut gives me. I think that the error message is misleading. Probably there is another error behind the scenes.
Recently I installed UBUNTU 10.04 on my Laptop, but since then I have not been able to Boot windows, since then, there is an option at start up for Vista, however when I choose this nothing happens I just get a blank screen and a cursor in the top left corner.
What is the easiest and/or safest way to migrate my Wubi 10.04 install to a full install? Currently, my Dell XPS M1530 is currently dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows Vista Home Premium, and I've decided after using Windows a total of around 4 hours over the past 6 months that I can probably let it go. So, I don't need Windows anymore and I believe I'm ready for a full install of Ubuntu. Though, I probably will wait for 11.04 to come out first.
A few ways I've thought of already are: 1) Find an external hard drive to put the Wubi files on. 2) Upload files to an storage website. 3) Temporarily put the Wubi files onto another computer (Windows). All these meaning I would then wipe my harddrive and install Ubuntu from a CD. And by "files", I mean Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc.
EDIT: deleting all my applications, because OpenOffice.org won't reinstall on my computer due to dependency issues while attempting to install LibreOffice. So a fresh install would be nice.
1. How can I install ubuntu 11.04 without using wubi?
2. in ubuntu 11.04 I found "main menu" that shows a lot of applications. Some ticked some not but, when I double click one a seemingly useless window opens.
What use is this menu for, how can it be used productively as it shows all available programs.
I have wubi and downloaded server tar in same directory, however, when I start wubi it downloads destop tar from web and than fails with permission denied.
Are there parameters to pass to wubi to direct it to source?
Wubi can't retrieve the netbook versions... any fix for this? I really don't want to use anything else but wubi. I used it on my desktop, and it was straightforward and I really prefer it (it's pretty much the only reason i'm putting linux on here lol)

1) Will this install in the Wubi directory? (c://ubuntu) or do i have to partition it first? If i do, please tell me a link how because the one i followed on the wiki said it didn't support 10.04 wubi. I would prefer to upgrade the Wubi install though
2) Will upgrading remove any of my user files? I installed themes i want to keep, and i wouldn't want to loose them.

I recently downloaded xubuntu 11.04. I run it live from USB it runs fine. Now i want to install it. I want to install it with wubi because in this case their less chance of data loss and easier to use. When i put all the downloaded files(inside downloaded iso) and run wubi(that came with iso)int the same folder it tries to download set up from internet. this is the error. why it is not working with files in that folder.OK I try to install this this from xubuntu bootable USB using wubi it runs better install it runs for a minute(installs files) but at the end of installation same error occur says can't connect to internet. I have been using Ubuntu for several months and am "getting to grips" with it. However, recently I needed to renew my hdd. I used recovery disks and back-ups of my "data" - all went well and Vista runs fine and I can access my "stuff". But when I install Ubuntu (Wubi) using a pendrive OR a cd - Ubuntu seems to install OK. But after I reboot my pc and get the option to select an OS - Vista OR Ubuntu - I cannot move the highlighted option with the arrow keys on my keyboard so it defaults (after 20 seconds) to Vista every time? I would like to try the newer (10.10) Ubuntu Release.
I am trying to upgrade RH9 to F10. I have downloaded dvd iso image i386. The SHA1 integrity check passes. The installer fails media check due to "errors". I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. If I bypass the media check I get the message : Running anaconda 11.4.1.62 the Fedora system installer - please wait.....
So, I converted a Vista user by enticing her with WUBI. She's a computer idiot, and she thinks Linux is great.
HOWEVER, she recently had Ubuntu muck up for her, so she uninstalled WUBI/Ubuntu and reinstalled it (9.10). Upon restart, GRUB presented no boot menu and went straight into Ubuntu. The funny thing is, under the GRUB configuration files, the timeout for the boot menu is set to 10. I tried the following (made sure to change the boot device to hda1,0 since fdisk shows her NTFS as /dev/sdb1):

Using THIS method, the boot loader did appear, but there was no Windows option. Odd. So, I'm at a blocking point. Yes, I was smart enough to run update-grub Thoughts? My replies may be a bit delayed - she's 2 hours away and I don't have direct access to her computer.
I have a quad core box with Windows 7 64 bit installed on it. When I try to install wubi I get an error box immediately after clicking on the exe file that says pyrun.exe at the top of the box and the text says no disk in drive insert disk into drive deviceharddisk2dr2 I have to use the task manager to close that window in order to do anything else. I can't get past this error. I would love to use wubi to put ubuntu on my system.
I have two computers. One has to stay Windows the other is Ubuntu. I had installed Ubuntu as a wubi install on that windows machine. I uninstalled via add/remove programs but the loader is still there. How do I get rid of that? It's not a big issue cause I just set Windows as the first boot whith a 3 second time so it loads right up. Just want to know how.
