Ubuntu :: Wireless Not Connecting Automatically?
Feb 13, 2010
After installing 9.10 (clean install of the OS), each time I restart my laptop I have to "OK" the wireless connection prompt in order for it to activate. The prompt that appears is the 'wireless security' tab of the 'network connection' window--with EVERYTHING filled in as it should be.YES, I DEFINITELY have "connect automatically" checked.

Just moved over to openSUSE 11.4 (KDE) from Ubuntu, yesterday. However, I'm having some trouble with my wireless connection.
I have a wireless network with a hidden SSID and WPA2-PSK security. I entered all the nescery information into the KDE network manager, but it couldn't find my network. So I ran the usual command:
Code:
su -c iwlist wlan0 scanning essid [My SSID]
At which point, the network manager immediately found, and connected to, the network. However, it seems that I have to run this command (as root) each time I log in, before my laptop will connect to the network. The network manager has no problem find the plethora of unsecured networks as well as those that are secure, but broadcast their SSID.

im kind of a novice at this type of thing, but i've gotten into it alot lately (coding that is) I was wondering how i might go about making a boot process that automatically connects to the internet. I've currently got a boot script that connects me to my home network, but will fail if I'm at work/school. so i was thinking there had to be a way to list all possible network connections, and then pick out one of them and automatically connect.Almost completely new to the world of linux.Im running slackware 13.1
I want to make a boot script that automatically identifies wireless networks in the area, and connects to one, I currently have a boot script that connects to my home network automatically but fails at work/schoool. So i figured theres got to be a way to identify networks, pluck one from the list, and use it.

just installed Debian 8.2 on my ThinkPad X230 laptop using netinst. I installed only basic system and then install packages I need manually. Now I stuck with NetworkManager and Wi-Fi. NetworkManager and its applet (package network-manager-gnome) installed, I can connect to my Wi-Fi network, but after reboot a dialog asking for passphrase for keys appeared and even after entering correct passphrase NetworkManager does not connect to the Wi-Fi, so I need to connect it manually.

Is there a way to have linux connect to the network when the ethernet cable is plugged in? I'm using Gentoo Linux, and I haven't found the right setup for the conf/net that'll allow me to do that.

I clicked "Network Settings", and I found that the ip address was wrong, which is "192.168.1.10/24", and netmask field is empty, so I modifed the configuration file located in /etc/sysconfig/network, named ifcfg-wlan0, added one line(NETMASK= '255.255.255.0'), saved it and reboot the system. After rebooting the system, I still found the ip address is wrong and netmask field is empty, so I have to use ifup command to activate my card manually every time the system starts.

I made some tests with a router without security and my internet connexion worked without any problem. But if I activated the wep security (or wpa it is the same behaviour) suse 11.1 won't connect in any way.
I used knetwork manager and traditional ifup method, both failed to connect.
I saw, using iwconfig that in both cases (wpa or wep) I was associated with the AP but dhclient won't work in any way, I was always in the APIPA...
I checked if there weren't any access control (mac address filtering, ...) and all the settings in the router were off to give me full access. Including the firewall set to off. The DHCP feature was on in both cases.
I noticed that the firewall must be on in suse 11.1 otherwise I couldn't have any connections even if I disabled wep or wpa...

I set up 11.4 in my laptopnd, after updating and downloading the proper firmwareeverytihing runs great. I already configured the wireless network via the standard NetworkManager but the connection never starts automatically. When I boot up it reports all the wireless connections available and also let me connect to hidden networks (mine is not broadcasting so I have to use this option). I had to reconfigure my network options the first time I selected Hidden Networks but it connects fine. Please note I had already selected the "Automatic connection" optionSo the only question is how I configure my equipment so it connects automatically to the already configured network

I am facing issues in connecting to wifi after upgrading to 11.3 from 11.2. My laptop has Intel 5100 wireless. I had searched through the forum and did find some workarounds(like updating options.conf, removing /etc/NetworkManager directory, using ifup instead of network manager) but all those are not working for me. It will disconnect within a few mins after restaring network service. Has anyone heard about any fix from Intel guys for this and if yes then where can I get that? I had faced hell lot of difficulties while upgrading coz of many unresolved dependencies and don't want to go back to 11.2

I've tried really hard to avoid posting on here, but nothing that I've tried has worked. I just installed openSUSE 11.3 GNOME Desktop. It's my first time using openSUSE, but I do have a little bit of Linux experience. I have the following wireless network card:
0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01) c:00.0 0280: 14e4:4315 (rev 01)
I switched control of network setup to YaST (Traditional Method with ifup). It installed the firmware automatically for me. I set up connection configurations as follows:
- Dynamic Address: DHCP
- Operating Mode: Managed
- Network Name: Hetts (I was able to scan and it found my ESSID)
- Authentication Mode: No Encryption (I was using WPA2 and having trouble so for now I've switched my router to use no encryption just to try and get something working)
After setting this up and clicking OK, it should automatically configure and connect, right? I've tried a bunch of things including rebooting and deleting the wireless card configuration and starting over by reinstalling the firmware. I've also tried setting up the connection using NetworkManager and still have the same problem. I have my laptop setup to dual boot, and when I boot in Windows, wireless works perfectly fine, so there is nothing wrong with my hardware or router. Here are some of the outputs I'm getting:
[Code]...
I tried adding the IP address manually too using "ip addr add ...", but still no connection. I can't even ping the access point at 192.168.1.1. Sorry for such a long post, but it seemed to be common for people to not post enough information, so I put as much as I could think of.

I just converted over from Ubuntu, and so am quite new to this new system architecture. Please give me just a little patience I just installed 11.4 on my EEEPC 901. All works great, except the RT2860 wireless, which will search and attempt to connect, but does not ever manage to connect. All updates were installed through Ethernet, and multiple access points have been tried. I also have tried open connection with no encryption.

I have 10.10 32 bit and 64 bit live CDs. Using the 32 bit, I can easily connect to my wireless router. However, the 64 bit CD, while recognizing the wireless connection, will not connect. My computer is 64 bit capable (I ran Karmic and Lucid using 64 bit). I have a 802.11 WiFi using the rt2800pci driver. Any ideas on how to get the wireless working for 10.10 64 bit? I would like to install it, just leery of wireless problems.

I recently installed the latest version of Kubuntu in a dual boot system with Windows XP on a Dell laptop. The dell laptop has a broadcom wireless device, and I was able to set up the driver and get wireless working. Then I booted into windows XP to make a whole bunch of updates/driver installations, and when I booted back into Kubuntu it would not connect to the wireless network. I am pretty sure the device is still active, because it picks up on the wireless networks in the area. But KWallet does not open to ask for my password on booting. Something is not set right, but I can't tell what.

I'm using ubuntu for about 3 years, and I update my machine each 6 months with the latest version. In the past, in order to be able to connect to IBM wireless network (LEAP) I had to enabled a restricted driver in the "System>Admin>Hardware Drivers" restricted drivers manager. I think it was Intrepid, or (Hardy), that since then the restricted driver to the wireless card is not appear in the restricted drivers manager. I'm using Thinkpad T60, Ubuntu 10.04, the Ethernet controller is Atheros Communications Inc. AR5212 802.11abg NIC (rev 01) (attached the output of lspci command) BTW - I have no problems connecting to regular wifi networks.

I am having some trouble getting my computer to connect to my wireless network. There is a wireless icon in the system tray. When I click on the icon I get a list of SSIDs associated with available wireless networks. To connect to one of of those networks I move the cursor over the SSID, the SSID is then highlighted, I select the highlighted SSID, then my computer connects to the selected network.
Sometimes the SSID associated wth my wireless network does not show up on the list. Sometimes it does. Normally the SSIDs on the list are in bold lettering. When the SSID of my network does appear it is in shaded lettering. When I move the cursor over the SSID it is not highlighted and I cannot select it. So you see it is not possible for me to select the SSID of my network and connect to my network.
The computer I am running is a ThinkPad R40. This is the wireless controller on the computer. I got this with "lspci". 02:02.0 Network controller: AIRONET Wireless Communications Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b

Sorry people if here is not the right place to post this message. I've seen lots of people with problems in the wireless but not exactly mine. Well, the problem is, I can see all the networks around me, but I can't connect to them. when I click on my wireless network to connect, it stops when is getting the ip (from the dhcp server in the modem) and it doesn't connect, doesn't show any message, anything.
But different as I've seen from another posts my K/Ubuntu don't freeze. When I was with Kubuntu 10.08 everything was working but now I am using Kubuntu 11.04 on the same notebook, HP Pavilion dv6 and the wireless not connect. lspci -nnv | grep Wireless 02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. in short : installed 9.10 on a dell inspiron 600m which has a broadcom bcm4401 ethernet and an intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B mini PCI. At this point, i'm not too picky about which one works (meaning neither of them currently work). nm-tool seems to pick up on both : the broadcom (eth0) is using the b44 driver, State is unavailable; the intel (eth1) is using the ipw2100 driver, it's State is disconnected.
i have encryption turned off, and the wireless sees a number of AP's (including mine).
i'm jumping off the good ship m$ and determined to make this work!

I have a computer running Ubuntu, and a MacBook Pro. I need to buy a decently cheap wireless router that I can hook up to my Ubuntu so that it will send wifi signals and I can use the wifi to go online with my MacBook Pro. I was about to get one today, but remembered how Ubuntu is picky about working with things like that. I'm only going to be using it to get signals around the house which isn't that big at all.
So what would be the cheapest and decently efficient wireless routers that I can use which Ubuntu will cooperate with?

So I've connected to my wireless network with the command:
iwconfig wlan0 essid Linksys
But I need to enter my wireless access' passphrase to connect to it. The closest I've come is using:
iwconfig wlan0 key s: PASSPHRASE
...which gives an invalid argument and I've resently found out that this passphrase command is not supported - yet.
Where do one tell Ubuntu to use a passphrase to connect to a wireless network?
- Ubuntu 10.04
