Ubuntu :: Compact View Not Showing Full Filename?
Jun 7, 2011I am having a small issue with how Ubuntu displays my files. In Windows 7, I typically view my files in the "list format." In Windows 7, when in that format, it displays the entire file name of my files. In Ubuntu, "compact view" is the same format as "list" from Windows 7. The only difference is, it does not show the entire filename. Kansas - Carry on my Wayward son.mp3 for example, is viewed as Kansas - Carry on m... This is really not a big deal. And I get it, compact means compact. I can just use Ubuntu's "List View" to see the entire file names of files. But that's not my preferred way of viewing files. I was wondering if there was a way to make "compact view" show the entire file of my files.

Dec 9, 2010Some people love icons, but not me. I prefer the file list view. I have stumbled around Ubuntu 10.10 trying to find where to set this preference, but have had no success so far. In windows, you would set the preferred view and then apply to all folders. Ubuntu does not follow this paradigm, and indeed, why should it? I have searched the preferences in Ubuntu, and did a global search f this site for related topics. I know you have to be able to do this, I just don't know how. This is the type of topic I will probably kick myself for when someone shows me how easy it is to do. If you don't know how to do it though, it is still black magic.

Jan 22, 2010Everytime I open Konqueror, it opens in "Embedded Text Editor" mode . So if I open it then click on a bookmark, it opens in edit mode. I can select View->View Mode->khtml and then the page displays properly. If I click on a link from that page, it displays properly. If I open a new tab, it is back to edit mode. If I open konqueror from konsole, it has the same behavior. I have removed all files under ~/.kde that mention konqueror, kong_* or kfmclient.
I checked the menu entry for Konqueror, and it is "kfmclient openProfile web browsing". I have set the view mode properly, then manually saved the profile in Konqueror. I have checked the system settings file associations, and the konqueror entry has the same application command (kfmclient) as the kde menu entry. Does anyone know how to make the view mode "stick" for Konqueror such that when clicking on html urls or selecting bookmarks causes Konqueror to display properly?
F12 x86_64, latest updates (4.3.4-1).
Ubuntu :: What Is The Default Password For Lucid?
Apr 12, 2011I have Tango Studio installed on a usb stick which i wish to install alongside my current Maverick install. I booted up into it but when i click on the "install tango studio" icon i get asked for a password. I have searched google and i have not been able to find anything about this. It doesn't appear anywhere on their website and before someone says to ask on their forums i can't as their forums are not in english. I used start up disk creator to make the usb install but couldn't boot into it at first. I did some searching and found out that creating a usb install in maverick isn't backwards compatible. There was a simple solution which got me into the live mode, pressing tab, typing in live and then enter. I wonder if this is the reason why i am being asked for the password when i get into the live desktop? I have never had to put in a password before. I have tried a few generic passwords but no joy so i don't know what to do. Is there a default password that Ubuntu uses that would work for me so i could finally get it installed?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Default Kernel After Upgrading From 9.xx To 10.04 Lucid Lynx
Jul 21, 2010after upgrading to lucid lynx ubuntu doesn't boot with the new kernels 2.6.32-22-generic and 2.6.32-23-generic (also in recovery mode). But it's does boot with the previous 2.6.31-21-generic kernel. At the time i was hoping to wait it out, but a new kernel has come and the problem persisted. I've been trying to find a solution for this but somehow, amid lots of failed boot blank black screen threads, i didn't relate to any solution. The boot seems to go well until a pixelated logo appears (before the login screen), then goes to a blank black screen and there it stays stuck with no remedy. Looking into dmesg logs - albeit some differences between 2.6.31-21 and the newer 2.6.32-23 - the failed boot seems proper in both logs. In Xorg logs the differences are bigger but i cannot pinpoint a source for this problem.

May 18, 2010I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid recently. Before upgrading, I had customized my desktop on Karmic with Compiz, Emerald and new set of fonts. After upgrade (which appears to have gone smoothly, yay!), my desktop retained the previous appearance settings. I want to try the factory default gnome appearance settings for Lucid and still stuck with restoring fonts.
What I have done till now:
0. Enabled Visual Effects from Appearance menu.
1. Theme -> Changed to Human
2. Window Manager -> Still using Compiz
3. Window Decorator -> Switched from Emerald to GTK
4. Font -> Changed first 3 font types in the Font tab to Sans, size 10, 4th to Sans Bold and 5th to Monochrome. Rendering -> subpixel smoothing (LCD)
What I want:
1. Is this the default setting? Have I missed anything in restoring default settings?
2. I have done too many changes to firefox font rendering over time. How do I restore default 10.04 font settings for Firefox? I would ideally love to have an option in Ubuntu which would help me restore factory settings.
Ubuntu :: Use Compact Flash As A Drive ?
May 29, 2010I have a project were I have been trying to use Compact Flash (CF Card) was a Ubuntu system drive, but can't seem to successful partition it. I can partition without error, but I go back into the partition tool it gives usually a cryptic error about the partitions. They won't format either. For example Gparted puts orange triangles next to each partition. cfdisk says partition exceeds cylinder boundary. I've tried three different computer, two different CF to IDE adapters (a laptop and desktop type) and four different models/brands of CF cards all are supposed to fixed disk IDE compatible. My theory is the drive geometry is not being detected correctly, or maybe a sector alignment issue. I've tried GUID partitions too and it doesn't help. How do I correctly partition a CF card?

Feb 8, 2010I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 to a Compact Flash card. It's not going very well. I have a 4GB USB drive that I want to install from. I can boot from this USB drive and get into either Ubuntu itself or the installation program only. Either way, I've tried to install it.
My Sandisk Extreme IV 4GB 45MB/s compact flash card is detected in my BIOS and shows up during the installation as well. Whenever I try to finalize and start the installation it gets to 15% and then gives an error on how it can't mount the file system.
I've tried every file system available. Funny thing is, I can use gparted to format the card to ext2. It then shows up on the desktop as a drive. If I go into that drive, there's a folder called lost+found. If I try to enter that folder it complains about permissions.
Is there any special trick to installing onto a compact flash card? I've tried with every file system available, with and without a swap file partition as well. I have quite scarce experience with Ubuntu and Linux in general so this is incredibly hard. But I wont give up that easily!
Second thought: If I can't get this working, would it be just as OK to run it as a "live" distro on the CF card? The motherboard is an Intel D945GSEJT. Using 1 gig ram.
Ubuntu :: Compact Flash Limited To 1024 Files In Nautilus?
Sep 26, 2010I just got an 8 gig compact flash card for my SLR camera. When I open the card (using a card reader) in Nautilus (Ubuntu 10.04) it will only list about 1024 files and not the rest. It does not provide any warnings so one could easily think all files have been copied when in fact they haven't. This could be a real issue if the user does not notice. Using another app called rapid photo downloader in Ubuntu does not seem to list/preview all the files either. I dual boot to win xp 32 bit and I can see all the photos and can copy them to the harddrive without any issues so I don't think it is hardware related. How to get Nautilus to allow the copy of all files?

Debian :: Format The Target Device ( A 4G Compact Flash )?
Oct 8, 2010I need to install an aplication to several machines. The aplication runs on a Debian and the installation process is done with a usb. I'm using a plop live usb to perform the installation. I've seen that with plop , once the live system is on, i can run some scripts.
What I'm trying to do is:
->format the target device (a 4G compact flash).
->mount the formatted device.
->untar my debian.tar.gz in that device.
After rebooting, the system never boots.

I have found this link with instruction [URL] but after I did what it was written, F14 still not recognizing the USB wireless adapter, so I cannot use internet on the Lenovo X201 (Which has an intel on board card, but there is no linux driver supporting it, that is why I got the Buffalo adapter)Interestingly that when I use the command lsusb in the terminal, it does give me back info of the adapter and it seems it recognize it. But I was not sure.
