in maverick the default package installer (when I double click on a .deb) is Ubuntu Software Centre, how can I make the default package installer from lucid (was it called "dpkg"?) the default again? Ubuntu Software Centre is too slow and freezes every time I click on something, can it be replaced?

Here's the question: The Installer set aside 6GB as Swap space, leaving 154GB as a / partition for everything. I had always thought 2GB was plenty, or as a general rule twice the Physical Memory size, which would only be 4GB swap, not 6.
Can / should I reclaim some of that swap space, if so how much. -- I can using tools like GParted to resize the partitions. -- Or just leave it as is. Unfortunately, the Ubuntu 10.10 installed did not seem to use GParted, so it was a little harder to set up initially.
Where i can get/see original Maverick sources.list? I have googled but no results, maybe wrong search-words..

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Tango Studio installed on a usb stick which i wish to install alongside my current Maverick install. I booted up into it but when i click on the "install tango studio" icon i get asked for a password. I have searched google and i have not been able to find anything about this. It doesn't appear anywhere on their website and before someone says to ask on their forums i can't as their forums are not in english. I used start up disk creator to make the usb install but couldn't boot into it at first. I did some searching and found out that creating a usb install in maverick isn't backwards compatible. There was a simple solution which got me into the live mode, pressing tab, typing in live and then enter. I wonder if this is the reason why i am being asked for the password when i get into the live desktop? I have never had to put in a password before. I have tried a few generic passwords but no joy so i don't know what to do. Is there a default password that Ubuntu uses that would work for me so i could finally get it installed?

Similar, but the icon set and windows are a little different. Under 'appearance' the theme, which I'm told is called 'light' isn't visible. And I don't know the original icon set. I have read other posts that state to right click on file>properties>open with but do not seem to have the open with option when right clicking a dvd that is in my dvd drive. I would also like to change the open with option in the right click menu. The current option is to open with movie player, and movie player cannot seem to find additional plug ins to open file with.

We were talking about having a 'fallback' option in Ubuntu / other Linux distros so that if you wanted to default to stock ubuntu with none of your personal additions (excluding updates)and we came up with the idea that if dpkg / apt would install anything NEW to /opt, then you could go back to a vanilla install by just doing and then you have a essentially a clean install.
Out of curiosity more than anything else, we started looking around, googling possible ways to phrase that question and nothing came up. So does anyone know of a way to set that up?I know you can add /opt/ to your PATH variable so that you can put an executable there and BASH will find it. But I didn't know if you could do it for install things there by default.If nothing else at least it would give Ubuntu a more centralized place to install applications / view all parts of a applications because roaming through /etc/, /usr/, /bin/ and everything else that comes with the "AWESOME" Filesystem Hierarchy we still have is a pain.
I have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. how you change the default version of python in Lucid. Lucid comes packaged with 2.6 but we use 2.5 where I work. I didn't see much of anything on the web for this topic so figured I'd post something. If you are installing python2.5 on Lucid version 10.04 (comes package with 2.6 only)

I thought it had aptitude in it then, but I did not have it after installing 10.10 (installed it twice it is not on either). I am just wondering why, even debian includes aptitude.

while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.
now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).
I would like to know how do i change this default appearance like ubuntu default 10.04 appearance. I am attaching a screen-shoot of my friends desktop, he upgraded his ubuntu thru apptitude update.
But I couldn't find a modified version of it for Swiftfox anywhere, so I decided to modify it myself. But I'm not 100% sure that I did it correctly, so I thought I'd ask here.
Also, will Swiftfox 3.6.4 be able to use this same profile? I thought it might not because of the new "Out of process plugins" feature being added.
after upgrading to lucid lynx ubuntu doesn't boot with the new kernels 2.6.32-22-generic and 2.6.32-23-generic (also in recovery mode). But it's does boot with the previous 2.6.31-21-generic kernel. At the time i was hoping to wait it out, but a new kernel has come and the problem persisted. I've been trying to find a solution for this but somehow, amid lots of failed boot blank black screen threads, i didn't relate to any solution. The boot seems to go well until a pixelated logo appears (before the login screen), then goes to a blank black screen and there it stays stuck with no remedy. Looking into dmesg logs - albeit some differences between 2.6.31-21 and the newer 2.6.32-23 - the failed boot seems proper in both logs. In Xorg logs the differences are bigger but i cannot pinpoint a source for this problem.

I'm running Gnome 2 on Ubuntu 11.04 (I removed Unity completely). But when I login to the system it is using the Metacity windows environment. I can get compiz working by running 'compiz --replace'. I just added that command to the 'Startup Applications' but that way seems like a cheesy workaround. Is there a way to make compiz the *ACTUAL* default window manager without using the 'Startup Applications' route?
