View 2 RepliesI don't have any connection issues, but Firefox always starts in offline mode. I can uncheck it and everything works fine. If I close and reopen it Firefox switches back to offline mode.
View 4 Replies View RelatedFirefox is set to launch automatically at startup. It regularly starts up in offline mode. Then, once wireless connection is established, I have to restart FF in order to get it to browse the net.
This has been amply discussed and fixes have been suggested. I've tried at least three modifications using FF's 'about:config', but to no avail.
I'm running FFx 3.0.5 on Debian Lenny and like many people before me, I am annoyed with the Work Offline setting being the default setting. I have perused the previous threads on this topic and found two solutions:
1. shut off the Network Manager daemon
2. change the settings in prefs.js
I have shut down the Network manager but to no effect The relevant setting in prefs.js is:
user_pref("browser.offline", false);
how I can change this setting to default to Work Online?
Finally solved a problem of wireless not working on my laptop. Now I have a problem where Firefox (3.6.4) starts up in off-line mode on each instance. I have to go to files menu and uncheck the work offline button before trying to go to any site. When I close firefox and later open it again, the work offline button is still checked.
Why is the unchecking of work offline saved between instances? Other settings and preferences are saved correctly. I don't have this problem in openSUSE 11.2 & 11.3 (same version of FF).

After moving from 9.04 to 10.04, the single most annoying issue for me is Empathy. Yes, it doesn't pop up a new window when a new message arrives. Yes I missed few messages because of that (no, turning the small "mail" icon to green doesn't get my attention as much as a new window). But, I can live with this.
The real issue for me is it shows Offline contacts as Online. Let's start Empathy and let's say you have 10 contacts as Online. If one of them goes Offline, Empathy still shows the contact as online. You will only find this out when you try to send a message.
I am using pidgin 2.7.3 (libpurple 2.7.3).
The problem is Pidgin is showing online buddies as offline, both in case of gtalk & my facebook account.
Its even showing users offline while I am chatting with them.
What are the solutions to consistently backup a set of VMs stored in disk images (qcow2 or raw) on a filesystem on a lvm volume (with possible snapshots).
- Online : Ideally, I would like to send a sync to all VMs before pause and snapshot, but it seems that it's not possible with KVM (it was with XEN). The save command seemed to be an option, but it crashes some VMs. So, what do you recommend to backup these VMs online ?
- Offline : Is there a command to shutdown all vms, and start them back after snapshot/backup ?

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I am going to dual boot install my desktop at home with windows and ubuntu 10.10. This desktop does not have an Internet connection. However, I have a laptop (hp g61) that I plan on doing the same type of boot config to. So my question is... If I have driver problems or want programs for my desktop, can I get these with my laptop and then transfer to my desktop?. I know I can get some programs from a .dev file I've already got with a lot of various programs that will (I guess) automatically install. My real concern is drivers as I have heard that ati video cards tend to have some problems.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using ubuntu 10.10 from few days ago. I need to update it. But I have no net connection in home pc. How can i update this without net connection. Anyone let me know how can I do it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently did a fresh install of 10.10 (previously I had 10.04). I could not do an upgrade because the package manager had a problem with unresolved dependencies resulting from the installation of a Nokia package for my CS-15 usb modem.
Since it was a new install, I did fresh backups of everything I needed, including evolution. After the install I tried restoring my email from the backup. Then I noticed that the send/receive button was disabled and so was the option to work online in the file menu.
The version of evolution is 2.30.3.
I thought this thread:
Had an answer to my problem but it appears to be something different. (still can't post URLs... not enough posts to date)
I tried deleting the .evolution folder in my home directory (as suggested in that other thread) and then re-installed evolution. That didn't work, however. I still have the same problem.
Oddly enough all my account details are still there! I tried checking the supported authentication and that seems to work.
I've trawled a number of forum posts in this and other forums but haven't seen this problem described anywhere.
How I can get my email to function again?
I have installed Claws Mail and can now access my mail without recourse to a web portal. However, this is a very unsatisfying work-around and I'd really like to get Evolution working again. One very strange thing: shortly after installing Claws I tried Evolution again and for that one session everything was OK. Now it is stuck in offline mode again.
In Ubuntu I can easily transfer packages from offline machine into online machine using APTonCD feature. In fedora ,Is there anything similar by which I can transfer my packages of online machine into the offline machine
View 2 Replies View Relatedi installed smeegol out of curiosity. and i am planning on keeping it installed as a alternative desktop. so "get rid of smeegol" is not an acceptable answer to my question. my question is also not so much about how can i turn this behaviour off but i wanna understand whats going on. here it is:when i log out of kde and start smeegol i am in offline mode per default. now thats unconfortable but i can live with it. what is however very weired and this is what the question is all about: when i leave smeegol with
init 3
init 5
and i start kde again my network manager doesnt start properly. i tried switching to traditional and switching back. still not working i tried killing the processes and restarting them still not working. i tried restarting my hole pc (i know stupid but it was a desperate move) still not working i tried a dozen other things that are even more desperate the only thing that got my network working again was starting smeegol again and switching to online mode
then ctrl + alt + backspace
and back into kde
suddenly i am online again
this is confusing how can smeegol my network manager up that hard that even a restart wont get it connected.
After I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, my /etc/hosts, which had been previously edited by me, restored to default. I configured it again and was able to work for a while - untill I went offline. Each time I go offline since the upgrade, Ubuntu restores this file to default deleting my domains from it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a monthful of Spotify Premium to enjoy music at the school with my laptop and Nokia E71 with the offline mode - the WiFi at our school is too laggy to stream online music. Under wine, it works quite fine, however, I would totally like to use the native client (yes, I'm too a "yay linux" person like all of you here ), but the music quality is very poor on offline mode. It clips, goes forward, a second back, then back forward etc. The bitrate sounds to be high, an the quality is very good except the annoying clipping.
Anyone else experiencing this? I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 Beta release with Samsung N510 so the cpu power should not be an issue even though the native client uses the resources very greedily. Interesting enough, on my desktop computer (Core2Quad @ 3,3GHz, 4GB 900MHz DDR2 RAM) with the same OS version and software plays offline playlists smoothly (only some occasional clipping)
I did a clean install of 10.10 on my Asus A6R laptop today. Previously i had 10.04 on it.
After installation and the first reboot my GNOME won't start in normal session. If I select Ubuntu Desktop Edition (safe mode) everything works fine, but on the normal Ubuntu Desktop Edition session, GNOME just won't start. I have a mouse cursor that i can move around and a normal background. Also i can hear the usual startup sound.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit and I did some Update Manager system updates yesterday evening without paying to much attention at the process. This morning when I started my computer, it froze during boot and my Ubuntu is not working anymore. I managed to start it in "Safe Mode" and checked the kernel version which is 2.6.35-24-generic . In System > About Ubuntu it says that I am using Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal - released in April 2011 and supported until October 2012 even though I am sure I didn't do any dist. upgrade.
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen i upgraded my PC to 10.04, i had to add a new entry to the network interface file so it would connect to the Internet (auto etho etc.) since then firefox 3.6.3 always as being offline. each time i uncheck it then next time its offline again.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded a linux kernel from linux.org to check what is the kernel is about, i clicked on make_file or make sth .. and in the same session i downloaded a program called login window.
Now the problem is that the system boots ok, it gives me a msg saying that system is running in low graphics mode, when i press ok i get a few options like troubleshootin or restart x or use back up configuration .. and nothing works .. when i press start normally it never stops loading .. i can see the terminal when clicking ctrl + alt + f1,f2 ... but when i press ctrl + alt + f7 or return back to the desktop ubuntu is still loading .. it never stops loading.
And after using ubuntu for a while i really hate windows 7 .. i have it on the system, so is there a way to fix this problem?
I don't start a network connection when my machine boots FC11 64 bit. When I start the connection and the Firefox browser, I always find that Firefox has set itself to work offline. I use File->work offline and uncheck that box. This fixes the problem, but only till the next reboot. Even if I exit Firefox "in an orderly manner", the next time it will have set itself to work offline.
I had this problem in previous Fedora versions. I read about two solutions on the web. One was to write a script that removed a file called extensions.cache before Firefox ran. The other was to type about:config in the address bar of Firefox, acknowledge the warning message, and use the right mouse button to togglethe value ofoolkit.networkmanager.disable from "false" to "true".Are either of these good solutions? What exactly does "network manager" do? I think of it as the gui under System->Administration->Network, but it must be more.
If I let my computer sit for about 10 minutes, I lose all the windows I had open (gnome) and i get a message saying I'm running in low graphics mode. I have to restart X in low graphics mode to get it to work. i can't tell the difference, but as an avid writer, I often feel the need to get up and think about whatever I have open in oowriter.
