I amend the grub file at /etc/default/grub as administrator, I then open a terminal and perform 'sudo update-grub', but I receive the following error message:
Quote:
/etc/default/grub: 1: If: not found
What could this mean? How can I update Grub successfully?
I have Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit installed. Update manager tells me there are updates available, but when i try to install them, downloading the updates fail and throws this error:
Code:
Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/e/eglibc/libc6-i386_2.10.1-0ubuntu16_amd64.deb
Consequently, a similar error occurs when I try installing Sun Java 6 Runtime.
Code:

Ubuntu Restricted Extras stalls when it's time to download the Java package I tried synaptic, update manager, aptitude, apt-get, and they all throw similar errors. Then I also tried connecting to different servers, to no avail. So to check if it's my connection to the net that has problems somehow, I tried downloading the file directly through my web browser, and it works. (But it's not recommended, and it won't let me!, install the updates manually, right?) I tried searching for the errors on the net and in the forums, and they're all somehow related to proxy servers. I then checked if I'm using some inappropriate proxy settings, and everywhere it's all set up to connect to the net directly, which is, well, my setup.
Take note though, that I am able to install other softwares normally, i.e, using synaptic, apt-get etc. The ones I tried include Pidgin and Mplayer. It's just these updates and Java:
Code:
jeanne@jeanne-desktop:~$ sudo sudo aptitude upgrade W: The "upgrade" command is deprecated; use "safe-upgrade" instead. Reading package lists... Done
I have a error when i want to update my system via YUMI execute the next command.sh@ yum -y updateYou could try using --skip-broken to work around the problemYou could try running:package-cleanup --problems package-cleanup --dupes rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigestThe program package-cleanup is found in the yum-utils package.
I apologize if this is posted elsewhere, but after a few searches I came up blank. My question is how do I redirect apt-get to look under current distro repositories? I upgraded recently to Karmic from Jaunty, yet apt-get is still looking for Jaunty. ie

10.10 -> 11.04 Update hang and fail I used Update manager to update and the screen froze at the end of the "installing updates" phase with 1 minute remaining, with the last message "Installed liblvm2app2.2"
After a power cycle I get the grub boot menu but after that a blank screen and then nothing
The PC is a triple boot with Windows XP and Slackware. I can still boot into Windows.
I tried to update Linux kernel (2.6.39) but after installation procedure PC won't boot into NEW kernel, I get only BLANK screen, but hopefully older kernel works just fine (2.6.38-9), how to fix it, that I can fluently boot into 2.6.39?
i updated and now the bar at the top of the screan does not extend all the way across my 2 screans and most of my icons have failed, ill upload a picture

I am using Ubuntu 8.04. Most of my Administration functions have stopped working. If I click on Hardware Drivers, Hardware Testing, Log In Window, Software Sources, Synaptic Package Manager, and Windows Wireless Drivers my pointer turns into the timer wheel, so I know it is working, but then it just disappears and nothing happens. When I click on Update Manager my computer freezes. If I try to update through the red Updates Available arrow at the top of my screen my computer freezes. I can update through terminal but the red arrow never goes away. I also have 17 updates that won't update. I have tried them one at a time through terminal but they just freeze the computer. The only way to unfreeze it is to shut the computer down.
I've been running Lucid since it dropped. Decided to upgrade my NVIDIA 6600gt graphics card to the newest driver I found at the website. Installation went flawless. But after reboot, I got this:
Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode
The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this.

I'm trying to migrate my LVs over to a Luks volume (prompt on password at boot). Unfortunately, as soon as I add my luks-encrypted physical volume to my volume group, I'm no longer able to update my grub configuration. I've detailed my steps below:
I've created and unlocked my encrypted partition with the following:
Code: sudo cryptsetup -c aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 -y -s 256 luksFormat /dev/sdb1 sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb1 crypto_agilityssd My /etc/crypttab looks like this:
I just upgraded from Fedora 10 to 11 using yum preupgrade method. After what seems to be a successful upgrade, I get 2 boot errors warning icon at the log-in screen - one for ntpd and the other for httpd, both fail.
When trying to start http by command line the following error line appears: Starting httpd: httpd: Syntax error on line 196 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/mod_file_cache.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/mod_file_cache.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory [FAILED]
In "Services" it shows httpd as being enabled, but not started. When I try to start it, it just gets stuck on refreshing.
So after a win7 wubi install, I updated through system update. Now after I choose ubuntu in the win bootloader it takes me to a grub screen. How can I boot into linux and remove grub? (This isn't my computer otherwise I would dual boot and let grub take care of it).
Ok. Using Release 12 Constantine Gnome 2.28. Whenever I try to update my computer via de Software Update Manager that pops up every now and then I get an error and the Software Update fails.
The error says its a repository not found, but I am very new at this and have no clue as to where to fix this. Alongside of this, is the fact that since one of the updates is failing, the rest don't install either. So the updates keep on piling.
This is the error shown in the More Details window:
Last nights updates of: java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-39.b18.fc13.i686 and java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0-39.b18.fc13.i686 no longer work with Ameritrade Command Center. I was really happy when OpenJDK got to a point where I didn't have to install Sun's Java, and it has been working great for quite a few months now, but today, when trying to bring up Command Center, it's telling me that there is a missing plugin, then points me to the Sun Java site. This is when using Firefox or Chrome. It may just be the plugin or the way it's positioned, so, hopefully this weekend I'll get time to investigate a little further. If not I'll downgrade to the previous version. <sigh> I really didn't want to install Sun's Java on my F13 boxes.
So I know I should have known better then to turn my updates back on after the 15 and 16 kernel updates crashed ubuntu and grub but I did anyway and once again after a new kernel gets installed I'm stuck at the grub sh prompt.
Been down the road before... tried using linux /boot/vml....... root=/dev/sda1 loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro When I use the 16 or 17 kernel I get an error stating "invalid imaginary number"...
So I use the 14 kernal and enter initrd /boot/initrd..... boot
And it boots like it did the last time this crashed. I went to the terminal and entered sudo apt-get install grub 2 sudo update-grub2
And then rebooted like I did last time expecting the problem to be fixed and at least be able to boot up the 14-generic. It didn't fixed this time. So now what do I do to fix grub and what do I do about having 2 unbootable kernals??
After installing windows XP,I did some googling to try to get ubuntu back, but seems messed something up. Right now, every time to boot system,I have to press "e" on first entry in boot menu, then press "e"s to do these two modifications to startup ubuntu corrently:
2,then try to modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg: change all root (hd0,0) to (hd0,4)
(don't know and find where to change:"kernel /boot/... root=/dev/hd0 ro ..") and restart, thing is being same as before,so how can I get gr ub2 configured right?
I have a Mobile Broadband connection (as NetworkManager calls it) that works very well until the latest update. Now it fails to connect 99.9% of the time. When it does connect it works very sluggishly.
I didn't update a second computer I have and it still works fine here. Both run F10 x86_64, both are fully updated (except for NM on this one).
Output of grep NetworkManager /var/log/messages | tail -100 from non working machine code...
I run the 2.6.32-5-686 kernel on Squeeze and the bad nvidia drivers. A recent update, and pardon for not noting which, broke 3d games on my box. From a terminal neverputt yields the following error:

I can mv xorg.conf to xorg.conf-pre and nexuiz will fire-up. Without 3d of course. I spent an hour or so last week going over my xorg.conf but it just ain't broke! Someone else saw it, too, and reported it but his post remains alone in the thread as of 10 minutes ago.
I have tried numerous times to install ubuntu 10.04 through a CD and it always fails to boot. I get a message similar to this one: "BusyBox v1.10.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.10.2-2ubuntu7) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs) -"
I have ubuntu 9.10 installed at the moment, and when I update it to 10.04, through update, I still get the same message.
If I were installing from a cd like I was, I could MD5 test the ISO I downloaded and check the CD for defects, but what about when all I'm doing is updating from the update manager?
Today, I used the Update Manager to do my first post-installation update of Ubuntu 9.10. I have a multi-boot setup (Ubuntu / WinXP), using GRUB2. Before the update, I had 5 options: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode) Memory test (memtest86+) Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)

Is it valid that the -14- has remained in the list? Surely I can only boot -20- now? How should I get rid of this version since it is added by update-grub because of the existence of this file: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic,Should I delete the file or just rename it? Or is there a better way?
I upgraded my main box to Ubuntu 10.04 and everything runs fine, except for a problem with grub: I can't modify the boot menu in any way, I'm stuck with what grub2 thought was the optimal setup at installation time (and it got it wrong, btw). The current boot menu lists:
- my older 9.10 install in sdb2 (one kernel) - legacy windows XP install on sda1 - my even older 9.04 install in sdb1 (two kernel versions) - my new install in sdb3, with only one kernel (the one coming with the distro CD)
I tried anything I could think of to modify this menu:
- modify the /etc grub config file then running sudo update-grub - using a specific app (system manager? don't remember its name) - upgrading to the latest kernel - removing and reinstalling grub
to no avail: the menu is still there in the above form, and I have to manually select the 10.04 (old) kernel by hand every time I reboot.
Is there a way to stop GRUB2 from updating grub.cfg with new entries after an update? It shits me because it goes and writes over all my custom modifications of current entries.. e.g:
"Windows 7 Home Premium" (which I made), gets changed back to:
I have mysql installed successfully. I can insert rows into my table using phpMyAdmin. I can successful retrieve those rows in PHP with a select statement. However, I cannot insert or update rows from PHP. I get no error messages and everything appears to be working okay, just no results in mysql table.
I was assigned to do all the RHEL5 updates. All installed fine including the new kernel except for the updated libX11 and python packages. Does anyone have any suggestions relating to a fix for this?
