Ubuntu Installation :: Apt-get Update Fail?

Apr 9, 2010

I apologize if this is posted elsewhere, but after a few searches I came up blank. My question is how do I redirect apt-get to look under current distro repositories? I upgraded recently to Karmic from Jaunty, yet apt-get is still looking for Jaunty. ie

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.ernie@ubuntu:~$I know this has to be an easy fix, I'm just too new to know what to do about it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fetching From Update Servers Fail When When Using Update Managers?

Aug 21, 2010

I have Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit installed. Update manager tells me there are updates available, but when i try to install them, downloading the updates fail and throws this error:

Code:

Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/e/eglibc/libc6-i386_2.10.1-0ubuntu16_amd64.deb

Consequently, a similar error occurs when I try installing Sun Java 6 Runtime.

Code:

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/s/sun-java6/sun-java6-jre_6-15-1_all.deb Connection failed [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]

Ubuntu Restricted Extras stalls when it's time to download the Java package I tried synaptic, update manager, aptitude, apt-get, and they all throw similar errors. Then I also tried connecting to different servers, to no avail. So to check if it's my connection to the net that has problems somehow, I tried downloading the file directly through my web browser, and it works. (But it's not recommended, and it won't let me!, install the updates manually, right?) I tried searching for the errors on the net and in the forums, and they're all somehow related to proxy servers. I then checked if I'm using some inappropriate proxy settings, and everywhere it's all set up to connect to the net directly, which is, well, my setup.

Take note though, that I am able to install other softwares normally, i.e, using synaptic, apt-get etc. The ones I tried include Pidgin and Mplayer. It's just these updates and Java:

Code:

jeanne@jeanne-desktop:~$ sudo sudo aptitude upgrade
W: The "upgrade" command is deprecated; use "safe-upgrade" instead.

Ubuntu :: Administration Functions And Automatic Update Fail To Work?

If I click on Hardware Drivers, Hardware Testing, Log In Window, Software Sources, Synaptic Package Manager, and Windows Wireless Drivers my pointer turns into the timer wheel, so I know it is working, but then it just disappears and nothing happens. When I click on Update Manager my computer freezes. If I try to update through the red Updates Available arrow at the top of my screen my computer freezes. I can update through terminal but the red arrow never goes away. I also have 17 updates that won't update. I have tried them one at a time through terminal but they just freeze the computer. The only way to unfreeze it is to shut the computer down.

Fedora :: After Update From 10 To 11 - Ntp And Http Services Fail

I just upgraded from Fedora 10 to 11 using yum preupgrade method. After what seems to be a successful upgrade, I get 2 boot errors warning icon at the log-in screen - one for ntpd and the other for httpd, both fail.

When trying to start http by command line the following error line appears:

In "Services" it shows httpd as being enabled, but not started. When I try to start it, it just gets stuck on refreshing.

Fedora :: OpenJDK & Plugin Update - Ameritrade Fail?

Jun 11, 2010

Last nights updates of: java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-39.b18.fc13.i686 and java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0-39.b18.fc13.i686 no longer work with Ameritrade Command Center. I was really happy when OpenJDK got to a point where I didn't have to install Sun's Java, and it has been working great for quite a few months now, but today, when trying to bring up Command Center, it's telling me that there is a missing plugin, then points me to the Sun Java site. This is when using Firefox or Chrome. It may just be the plugin or the way it's positioned, so, hopefully this weekend I'll get time to investigate a little further. If not I'll downgrade to the previous version. <sigh> I really didn't want to install Sun's Java on my F13 boxes.

I have ubuntu 9.10 installed at the moment, and when I update it to 10.04, through update, I still get the same message.
