Ubuntu :: Stopp GRUB2 From Updating List On Update?
Mar 17, 2011
Is there a way to stop GRUB2 from updating grub.cfg with new entries after an update? It shits me because it goes and writes over all my custom modifications of current entries.. e.g:
"Windows 7 Home Premium" (which I made), gets changed back to:
I changed the pic for the theme in 05_debian_theme but when I got to update-grub I get this:
Generating grub.cfg ... /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme: line 43: syntax error near unexpected token `fi'
I have looked at a sample debian_theme file mine looks the same except for the name of the pic. the 'fi' is the one after the EOF.When I pasted in the image name I put .tng so I back spaced that out and there is still a '.' after the image name. Can I just restore the 05_debian_theme file without rebuilding the grub?

I'm experiencing a strange issue with my Ubuntu 10.10 since a few days:when trying to update the packages list, a lot of repositories are ignored. Here is the output of
How come all these repositories cannot be hit?is there any way to make the update hit there repositories? And if they're useless, no longer supported, how can I remove them so to have a tidy repositories list?
i have using ubuntu 10.10 from past 3 months and about a week before upgraded to 11.04. The upgrade was a successful one and everything was back to normal, was enjoying unity. upgrading disabled most of the ppa's in the source list and later i enabled them and still everything was okay. yesterday suddenly when i clicked on the ubuntu software center it was just showing as if it was still processing the source list but after sometime it started giving me the below error: "E:Type 'rc' is not known on line 3 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/geod-ppa-geod-natty.list"
I'm simply trying to remove old kernels and second rename things that are on the list. It used to take me 10 seconds with grub1, but having some difficultly with grub2. So far I went into /boot/ and removed the old kernels and then did a sudo update-grub2 and it seemed to remove all the old kernels from the list. Is this the best way or doing it or any issues on doing it this way? Second I just want to rename what boots up like Ubuntu 2.6.32-22-generic to something else. I keep read not to modify the grub.cfg, but not sure what to do? I poked around the files in /etc/grub.d/, but not sure what to do?
but i really really new in ubuntu (linux), i just finished installing my ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition. after restart for the first time i can see my windows xp and windows 7 os were in the menu list but not my msdos 6.22 with fat 16 partition. I try to edit grub.cfg to add but i am not sure what the command line should i use in menu entry, could someone give an example. I really need that since i still make a programming project using C++ dos and Clipper.
Is there a way to make a dialog with zenity which would show an updating list? Zenity does it with progress, but I didn't figure out if it's possible to do it with the list. I.e. for example, I want to monitor something, and update the dialog with new list periodically. Is it even possible? zenity can wait for data from stdin, but it just adds stuff to the list. May be there are some control sequences which clear the list in the dialog?
I was using 9.10 because of my wifi not working in 10.4 (still does not but thats not the problem in this thread) well after getting my updates to update to 10.4 I run the package manager to update kernals and such, first it says theres an error failed to fetch CD then I reset my computer and it says my system is up to date but I do not have an option to upgrade to 10.10 and im sure theres updates my computer does not have..
Im not sure why this is happening ...but update mgr is not updating saying that "requires installation of untrusted packages"
find screenshots attached
update manager where text is not clearly visible says
"W:Failed to fetch http://android-notifier.googlecode.c...rce/Sources.gz 404 Not Found , E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."
I do have internet connectivity so whats the problem?
I have a 3dsp pci wifi card, and the last kernel it supports is Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.32-(21-24) I want to update but dont want to accidentally update the kernel. Sorry for this post I didnt spell the title of the first correctly, im a little f'd right now lol.
I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 and enabled Remote Desktop access on the machine. Using vncviewer from my XP box, I can log in just fine, but I'm not getting the screen refreshed in vncviewer. The Ubuntu box is getting all the mouse movements and clicks (I can see the ubuntu box from the XP box - I can see the mouse cursor moving around and I can see the menus being selected, etc.) Those events are just not showing up in the vcnviewer, though. TightVNCviewer version 1.3.10.
FWIW, prior to installing 10.04 I had 7.10 on that box and everything worked as it should. No changes on the XP box. I doubt it's relevant, but I had a power supply failure on the Ubuntu box, replaced that as well as the mother board - some of the capacitors looked like they were ready to go. I believe the new motherboard has a different nvidea-based on-board video chip. Since I had to replace the PS and mobo, I figured I might as well install 10.04 while I was at it.
I've tried using a script to run incremental backups. The idea was to use the update switch to just update the files in the .tar instead of creating new ones. However it seems to have created duplicate files in the tar instead of just updating them (refer to screenshot). Is this normal?
Here is the command in the script;
Code: tar -uvpf /home/jonny/.BackUps/Updating/Documents.tar /home/jonny/Documents
Is there a way stop this but still have them update to the latest version?
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. The Update Manager originally showed the update to Ubuntu 10.04 and I pressed the update button. Midway through the update, my internet died so I just cancelled the update. My internet is working again and I'm trying to update but the update manager won't show the update button. I've pressed check a bunch of times and installed all the other updates but I can't see the distribution update.
Got the network settings set up, tried to open firefox - nothing, wouldn't load. went into update manager and started updating the software. The update manager got stuck on updating Grub, I left it to do it's thing while I slept hoping it would finish. I wake up, go back to his pc and it's still stuck on grub, not really anything I could do but shut down his pc and try again, well, his pc doesn't even want to load Ubuntu now. I tried booting up several times, then tried the restore option in the loader, but all I get is this: [URL]...
Ubuntu tried to update, but some problems occurred. The triangle with an exclamation point in it showed up and I rolled my mouse over it.This is what it says:
"The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selection 'Check for updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail."
I did what it says and this came up:"The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct."
and in the white box below the message:"Failed to fetch url 404 Not Found Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."
Getting error when updating from update manager and also checking for upgrades in synaptic package manager...The below error is of update manager...However sometimes i dont get this error and update works.
I am using this command via ssh on my godaddy vps and receiving a no update available error. I talked to godaddy and they said there is no update available in the repository. Is there another way i can use to update php5.
I have been told by the staff from supermicro to update my BIOS, but they only have .exe to update. I ask them if they can help me to update my bios from Centos, and this is what they said
You can use RHEL driver: [URL] use same kernel driver for CentOS as RHEL. I'm really new with Centos OS, can you guide me on how would I be able to update my software via RHEL Driver? I see alot of RPM and images.
I amend the grub file at /etc/default/grub as administrator, I then open a terminal and perform 'sudo update-grub', but I receive the following error message:
Quote:
/etc/default/grub: 1: If: not found
What could this mean? How can I update Grub successfully?
I have been having some major issues with the update manager of ubuntu 9.10. I have had 3 instances so far where the updater froze either in the middle of updating or right after, and every time resulted in a corrupted file system. Two times it has happened to me which resulted in once having to completely reinstall and another was luckily saved by using Gparted on the live CD. But now my friend who i installed Ubuntu for has had the same problem. When it happened to me, I was forced to hold the power button to get the computer to turn off as it completely locked up the system. My friend however, was able to use the shutdown menu.
So I know I should have known better then to turn my updates back on after the 15 and 16 kernel updates crashed ubuntu and grub but I did anyway and once again after a new kernel gets installed I'm stuck at the grub sh prompt.
Been down the road before... tried using linux /boot/vml....... root=/dev/sda1 loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro When I use the 16 or 17 kernel I get an error stating "invalid imaginary number"...
So I use the 14 kernal and enter initrd /boot/initrd..... boot
And it boots like it did the last time this crashed. I went to the terminal and entered sudo apt-get install grub 2 sudo update-grub2
And then rebooted like I did last time expecting the problem to be fixed and at least be able to boot up the 14-generic. It didn't fixed this time. So now what do I do to fix grub and what do I do about having 2 unbootable kernals??
After installing windows XP,I did some googling to try to get ubuntu back, but seems messed something up. Right now, every time to boot system,I have to press "e" on first entry in boot menu, then press "e"s to do these two modifications to startup ubuntu corrently:
2,then try to modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg: change all root (hd0,0) to (hd0,4)
(don't know and find where to change:"kernel /boot/... root=/dev/hd0 ro ..") and restart, thing is being same as before,so how can I get gr ub2 configured right?
In general I love Ubuntu Karmic, and think it's the most polished Gnome distro out there, but since installing it on my laptop alongside Fedora I haven't been able to boot into the latter.
I know that I could fix it by adding an entry into the 40_custom file, but wonder if there's a simpler fix.
The command Quote:
sudo update-grub
actually finds and lists the Fedora Constantine kernel, but it still doesn't appear in the bootloader menu. Before I delve around and break something, does this mean that there's a line commented out in one of the config files?
I'm not going to slag off Grub 2 because I can see that it has clear benefits, especially for power users, and I don't mind change if it brings clear benefits. So long, /boot/grub/menu.lst.
I am having problems with my newly upgraded 9.10 distribution that keeps locking up. I had started a thread on that but along the way, I noticed another problem with the Update manager. I posted the following text in the same thread but realized that I must start a newer thread since it has its own issues (so sorry if you see this text in my other thread).I had upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 with ISO image and then to 9.10 with ISO image. In between, I did not reset anything in the Update manager (the upgrades were within one day of each other). Since the computer was connected to network during upgrades, I also let it fetch any newer packages as it needed them.
After the upgrade, I started having system lock ups and it requires hard boot. I tried to check for any updates using Update Manager. It reported that system was up-to-date. However, I noticed in the Settings that cdrom was selected in Sources (perhaps because I had upgraded with ISO image). I unselected the cdrom and tried to update the packages. Since I upgraded using ISO image, there is some problem here about recognizing the repository perhaps. Do you think my problem may have stemmed from upgrading twice using ISO images and not resetting the Update Manager in some fashion in between? Although the system did fetch upgraded packages during upgrades. How can I reset the update manager to start updating properly? Perhaps Authentication is an issue?Of course, I am still having trouble with lock up.
