Ubuntu :: Which Jabber/XMPP Client Supports Both Signing And Encrypting Messages With Openpgp
Jun 16, 2010
I've been trying to find out which jabber/XMPP clients out there automatically sign messages with openpgp you send but documentation on that has been spotty. Could you tell me a. if you know any clients that can easily sign and encrypt all outgoing messages and b. should I worry if a client is only able to sign presence and not messages?
The next problem I faced is that the Jabber-client sends messages but the recipients do not receive them. The server is Openfire 3.7.0. And our users use it without any problems. One user has Kubuntu 10.10. Pidgin 1:2.7.3-1ubuntu3.2. The connection passes well. The contact list loads well. The incoming messages are received well. But the messages which are sent to others - do not reach them. His Jabber-client is configured as others'. I tried Pidgin 1:2.7.3-1ubuntu3.2 (which is used in our company) and Gajim 0.13.4-1ubuntu1 .What can it be? And what should I do?I compared the openssl version on my computer and on problem computer. I have 0.9.8o-1ubuntu4.4. He had just 4. I upgraded his system. Now he has also 4.4. But the problem is still with us.
I'm not able to connect to my work's internal xmpp server. I've confirmed with co-workers that my settings are correct. They are able to connect but I am not.
In the debug window, I get a large number of messages, though none of them show up unless I set the logging level to 'debug'. Specifically nothing shows up if I set the log level to "error."
I tried a Google search on "WOCKY_AUTH_ERROR_STREAM" and got zero results. That's right: ZERO! I suddenly feel like I'm using a Mac!
Again, my co-workers are able to connect (though I haven't spoken to any fellow ubuntu/empathy users as they are either on vacation or in the field with me and using their blackberry) but Spark (puke!) and IM+ work fine.
When sending an LQ post, my browser says "You're about to send information that's not encrypted". OK. I tell him not to show the warning again. But what if I want to encrypt? How do I do it?
I've looked all over the net (believe me, EVERYWHERE), and I can't find anything. I sort of need a program that supports webcam so I can communicate with my family when I leave town in a few weeks. I've tried aMSN, emsense, Pidgin (webcam hasn't worked in that program for ages, heh), empathy (just audio works), skype, ekiga, and so on.
Is there any IRC client that supports VI keys? The ''obvious'' script VimIRC is and has been broken for so long it's not even funny. Do you know any IRC clients on Linux, GUI or Curses, that provides some of that nice vi usability? Or could some of the existing clients be scripted to use? Irssi, XChat, even ERC would do?
I am looking for a PHP based IMPA client with these requirements:
- User accounts (not same as imap email accounts)
- Each user can add multiple IMAP emails to his account and check/use them.
Is there any solution for my requirements. I checked Squirrelmail and roundcube but I am not sure they can do this.
Otherwise I will need to either develop a system from scratch or modify an existing one to do my job. I hesitate to develop myself as it will take months if not years to make it stable and bug free.
Can I make my messages directly appear at client from server? Normally we type tailf /var/log/messages to see messages sent by other machine. So can I send my messages directly at command prompt?
I use Karmic 64 bit and have installed Guarddog. When i try to fire up empathy and gtalk, network connection is refused. Clearly, I need to allow a protocol in guarddog. Gtalk uses (I believe) XMPP - which is not listed in Guarddog.
what I could do to let Empathy connect to gtalk servers?
I am trying to add a OpenPGP key for launchpad. It said to use this command.
Code: gpg --fingerprint When I use that command nothing shows.
Next I clicked on the the How to get the fingerprint. It said to go into Passwords and Encryption Keys. Then the My Personal Keys tab. I have nothing there. What should I do to get something there?
A number of Kopete bugs have appeared since I added Facebook chat with XMPP/Jabber this morning. Once I added it, Kopete took every regular & meta contact with a Facebook chat address and removed it from all the groups. Also, metacontacts were renamed to the name used on Facebook. This would not be a huge problem because I could simply move the contacts into groups and rename them, but every time Kopete is closed and re-opened it reverts back to how it was.
Kopete also forgets if I delete groups, because when I re-open the program they're back again. But those groups aren't related to the new Facebook Kopete account. It seems to forget all changes I make when the application is closed.
To import your OpenPGP key into Launchpad, you first need the key's fingerprint.
Note: You must ensure your key is in the Ubuntu keyserver before you try to add it to Launchpad.
Retrieving the key in Ubuntu
The easiest way to generate a new OpenPGP key in Ubuntu is to use the Passwords and Encryption Keys tool. If you are using Ubuntu 10.04 or an earlier version, it is located at Applications > Accessories > Passwords and Encryption Keys. In Ubuntu 10.10 and later versions, it is located at System > Preferences > Passwords and Encryption Keys.
Step 1 Open Passwords and Encryption Keys.
Step 2 Select the My Personal Keys tab, select your key and open the property window by pressing Space Bar or double clicking with your pointer. Select the Details tab of the property window.
Step 3 Select the Fingerprint text (the ten blocks of numbers and letter). Copy the text by pressing the Ctrl+c keys together.
Highlight and copy only the numeric fingerprint: 0464 39CD 2486 190A 2C5A 0739 0E68 04DC 16E7 CB72 in the example above.
so i followed these instructions, and there was nothing in my "personal keys", same for the command. so my question is how do i get the fingerprint to be able to register my key in launchpad?
I've made OpenPGP keys using gpg 1.4.9.I have a public key and a sub key.And a passphrase.I can distribute the pub key. What is sub key? Can I distribute sub key?I think the phasephrase is the private key. Right ? (in the RSA Algorithm)?Where to use the Secure Shell Key? And why to distribute it?
I'm having a problem installing Tor. I've installed it successfully a few times before thanks the excellent guide at: [URL] The error I'm having is when I request the gpg key:
Code:
ocean@ubuntu:~$ gpg --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv 886DDD89 gpg: requesting key 886DDD89 from hkp server keys.gnupg.net
Then after quite a delay all I get now (instead of "OK") is:
Code:
gpgkeys: HTTP fetch error 7: couldn't connect to host gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found. gpg: Total number processed: 0
I was just having some trouble getting an OpenPHP Key on Ubuntu Server. The link from Launchpad said, "go to applications..." but I'm not using a desktop environment, so I had to go to [URL] to learn how. Basically it boiled down to this:
I want to simplify some of my rules, so I want to create rules for certain services like xmpp, web, etc. since some of them use multiple ports, and I toggle them on/off a lot. Can I simply put the jump to rule clauses in the Input chain, and once the sub chains run, does it return to the input chain after the jump to rule clause? I want to do this so I don't have a ton of rules in the input chain. I think that if I simply make a list of all the rules to jump to in the input chain, it will work itself through all of them until it finds a matching filter in one of them correct?
I need help in setting up the native e-mail client included in Debian Squeeze. My ultimate goal is to have the Debian e-mail client download e-mail messages and process attachments automatically.
OpenPGP Standard RFC 4880, not really a Linux Question, but as may be using GnuPG on Linux I thought I would ask here
The Modification Detection Code Packet is defined to use SHA-1, even though it does state in section 13.11. that this can be altered, and gives example methods. However this would cause interoperability, (q1)so I assume there is no standard method of doing this??
- How much of a threat do you believe this to be? Even though the SHA-1 hash is encrypted within the symmetrically encrypted integrity protected data packet.
I was excited to use empathy in 10.04; however, both in the Beta and the Full Release I experience the following. (Note: I'm using 64 bit.)Setup 'Wizard' adds GTalk and Facebook Chat just fine.Manually add a IRC account (can't do that from wizard).Manually add a SIP account.Enjoy that it's working, and think that the full release fixed the bug.Disconnect
Then the next day.Set status as available.Get an ambiguous 'network-error' for GTalk and Facebook.Disable all accounts.Restart empathy, enable GTalk, get same error.Delete all accounts, restart system, go through account 'wizard', add GTalk, same error.Upgrade to dev version of Empathy, notice it's no longer in the nice messaging applet, but GTalk connects.Disconnect/Reconnect - same error.
Anyone else having this problem? Seems something is breaking with Jabber on Empathy. But I can't find any related information. I'll post logs when I boot into the 10.04 installation (which I was hoping to switch to, but not so sure right now.)
Initially I had a problem installing restricted extras. However, it appears the problem is more than a media problem, so I moved my thread here. I copied over what I thought the relevant code was from my previous thread. Anyone have ideas on how I can fix this?
Currently when the system boots, It boots jabberd2 before mysql. So jabber fails. Then, later mysql is loaded. I either want to force jabber to load mysql first, or make the system boot mysql first. I've tried changing /etc/init.d/jabberd2 to say "# Required-Start: mysql $network $named $remote_fs"... However, insserv says that mysql service has to be enabled... so I assume that's an issue because mysql is an upstart script.
I have had to ditch ubuntu after 4 happy years as their 10.04 release was crazily resource hungry on my humble machine. Installed F13 smoothly and without any problems and so far it doesn't appear to be as resource hungry as ubuntu. One thing I have not been able to find in either gnome preferences or administration is where to set it to go straight to desktop without messing around with passwords and stuff.
I'm running a small ejabberd server on a LAN. Everything works fine out of the box except that when certain users disconnect they remain listed as online. Specifically, Linux users who suspend their computers with their client still open are still listed as online. This is not the case for Windows or Mac clients. I did some research and fount out that it has something to do with the TCP keepalive timeouts on the server. However I cannot figure out how to set those times.
I am looking to be able to encrypt using OpenPGP certain outgoing emails on my linux server. Currently I have GPG setup with a public key, however encryption outgoing emails prooved to be harded. After a bit of research I have found GNU Anubis which acts as a middlemad between the MUA and the MTA, by encrypting emails before they reach my MTA (Sendmail)However I am having a bit of problem with the configuration of bind and remote-mta, as specified by anubis.I have the sendmail service running on port 25 and I want to leave it there, but I have configured my php.ini SMTP port to 24. So it runs through port 24 first and anubis then forwards the emails via remote-mta to port 25Here are my anubis configs:
With all those set, I can't seem to get the basic modication of emails to work. (trying to change a certain subject to something else, just to see that anubis is working). However emails are still working with port 24 as the SMTP port.
Recently jumped from Ubuntu to Fedora 12 over the weekend, has been quite the bumpy ride. Though fun of course. But I'm having trouble coming to a solution for this problem, that started today. When signing into both Empathy or Pidgin (only with msn account) they both just hang on the white screen inactive... I say "inactive" the program hasn't frozen I just cannot be signed in. Also, in Pidgin at the bottom, next to where it shows your status, it has;
I am interested in signing up to the Amazon EC2 service with EBS. I have never used a unmanaged vps before, but I know how to use the command line etc. There are some basic packs on there to use, with basic LAMP stacks. But I would like to ask about how do I:
Upgrade a lamp stack? - someone mentioned yum, but what is this? how easy is it to use? is it enough? secure the lamp stack? - assuming I have no idea of linux security, can you give me a list or something of things I need to consider so I can begin the search (or just cover the steps would be awesome!) My website just uses php and mysql, so thats all i'll need. If you have any other tips on this,
