I use Karmic 64 bit and have installed Guarddog. When i try to fire up empathy and gtalk, network connection is refused. Clearly, I need to allow a protocol in guarddog. Gtalk uses (I believe) XMPP - which is not listed in Guarddog.
what I could do to let Empathy connect to gtalk servers?
I am using gmote on my android phone to control my desktop. this works fine when guarddog is disabled and even though i have legato networking protocol enabled (this is the port range gmote is supposed to use 8889 and 9901) i am still having no luck locating my desktop with the firewall enabled.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get video calls to work using Empathy 2.30.0. I'm running the 10.04 beta right now, but I've had this problem ever since I installed Empathy. The problem is essentially that I don't even see the option to do a video call with my contact. I can do an audio call, but the option to do a video call is greyed out.
My webcam is built-in (the computer is a Dell Inspiron 1545n). I know that it _can_ work under Linux, as I regularly use Skype. Also, just after I upgraded to 10.04, I briefly had the "video call" option, but when the program crashed I tried to call, and then the option was gone again. What was strange is that for a little bit, before it crashed, my webcam was working, and I could see the image it was receiving. So it can't even be that Empathy just can't use my webcam.
Does anyone know anything about this problem? Everywhere I've looked says that Empathy should be able to make calls using GTalk.
This is my first post and I'm just starting to use Ubuntu again. I currently have 11.04 installed. So my friend and I are trying to voice chat using Google Talk. He is using Windows XP and is going through his web browser. If I use Empathy or Pidgin I can call him and he can hear me speak but I can't hear him. When he calls me, I get no notification from Pidgin, and from Empathy it rings and when I pick up I get nothing. It works perfectly fine for both of us if I also go through my browser. Hopefully someone can help with this or perhaps have another voice chat client we could use? For example, MSN is suppose to work with Empathy. If so, would we have fewer problems using that?
On a side note I always wanted to know when you guys give terminal commands on here do you have them memorized or do you copy and paste?! I'm such a noob when it comes to Linux and can't count the times Ubuntu has made me feel so dumb!
I am running Ubuntu 9.10 in a HP Pavillion dv7t Laptop. The webcam in the laptop is working fine, but when I try to place a video call to gtalk from Empathy it gets disconnected immediately. The regular chat and the audio calls work fine.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe title says it all really. I run Empathy, have used it for a while with both Google-chat and MSN protocols. I've been using it for a few months now and suddenly my MSN contacts have all disappeared.
People are able to contact me via MSN, and when their message window pops up I am able to respond. It says they are offline however.
I have tried listing all offline contacts but they still do not appear in the list.
I have tried uninstalling (including config files) and reinstalling but this wasn't successful either. When I reinstalled it still had details of my accounts so clearly the cofig files were not removed properly.
Sugegstions for a good empathy protocal I have empathy installed on one of my Linux and a friend with the same setup. We would like to video/audio chat though empathy together. Although there are a few protocols to choose from. Are there any recommendation on one that is stable and reliable???
View 3 Replies View Relatedi just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 the netbook distro. at the desktop view there is a list of about 10 buttons/menus listed on the left hand side, is there anyway to control what buttons/menus are listed and which icons are listed under each of them? having a netbook i would like to remove and unclutter the desktop view as much as possible but i dont want to remove those apps i still want to be able to open those apps if i want to even if by removing those icons and menus/buttons makes it a pain.

In the debug window, I get a large number of messages, though none of them show up unless I set the logging level to 'debug'. Specifically nothing shows up if I set the log level to "error."

Again, my co-workers are able to connect (though I haven't spoken to any fellow ubuntu/empathy users as they are either on vacation or in the field with me and using their blackberry) but Spark (puke!) and IM+ work fine.
I'm running Jaunty. For some reason, I cannot run Pogo games when the firewall is enabled. I've tried allowed "direct play gaming", thinking that might help, but it didn't. So i guess I need a custom protocol. What ports does Pogo use so I can allow them? Hopefully someone knows... and yes, I do have java. Pogo works if I turn the firewall off. Also, Ktorrent does not work either. I happen to know the ports this one uses, but when I make the protocol, it still doesn't allow torrents to run. The ports I'm trying are 6881 and UDP 4444.
View 2 Replies View RelatedA number of Kopete bugs have appeared since I added Facebook chat with XMPP/Jabber this morning. Once I added it, Kopete took every regular & meta contact with a Facebook chat address and removed it from all the groups. Also, metacontacts were renamed to the name used on Facebook. This would not be a huge problem because I could simply move the contacts into groups and rename them, but every time Kopete is closed and re-opened it reverts back to how it was.
Kopete also forgets if I delete groups, because when I re-open the program they're back again. But those groups aren't related to the new Facebook Kopete account. It seems to forget all changes I make when the application is closed.

But, am having big problems trying to compile or install guarddog. On my 1st try, I downloaded guarddog from Slackbuilds and replaced the SlackBuild script with this one which is off a thread in this forum:

I want to simplify some of my rules, so I want to create rules for certain services like xmpp, web, etc. since some of them use multiple ports, and I toggle them on/off a lot. Can I simply put the jump to rule clauses in the Input chain, and once the sub chains run, does it return to the input chain after the jump to rule clause? I want to do this so I don't have a ton of rules in the input chain. I think that if I simply make a list of all the rules to jump to in the input chain, it will work itself through all of them until it finds a matching filter in one of them correct?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running 9.04, and wanted to use GMail's talk and video features. Registered with Gmail, and had to install a deb called google-talkplugin_current_i386.deb , and after installation, Gmail appeared as if it was ready/ok for a chat, talk or video.
Then I noticed the .deb was not shown under Synaptic, as a 'standard' deb, so in the interests of some 3rd party software NOT running on the computer, uninstalled it.
Went looking in Synaptic, and it does have a 'gtalk'. Is that all that is required, to run talk or video under a web browser, after logging into my GMail account ? Or, should I use Empathy ?
Is it possible to run gtalk in linux OS? If it is possible what is the procedure.

Installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu 10.10 to do dual boot. everything works fine in Windows XP.In Ubuntu 10.10 I had issues connecting to Internet(Through Wirelss), I was able to rectify this issue by dsiable ipv6 from firefox about:config and setting true to network.dns.disableIPv6. After this I was able to connect to internet and browse websites from Firefox.But I am having Issues with Evolution Mail(Connection Timed Out) and Google Talk Client(Connection Timed Out).Empathy Internet Messaging gets connected fine.I was wondering if I will have to disable IPv6 System wide and hence I added the following lines to /etc/sysctl.conf

I'm running lucid. I have attempted several times to place a video call to Google talk contacts from empathy. The voice works fine and video from party is received successfully, but empathy won't broadcast my video. I know it's not a hardware issue.
