Ubuntu :: Virtualbox No Picking Up Dvd Drive?

May 1, 2011

I installed virtualbox xp, but now its installed, (i installed from my dvd drive!) it isnt picking up my dvd drive..SO.I thought if i added some 'shared folders', I could transfer the folders i needed from my virtual xp convertxtodvd instalation, then drag them into my proper unbuntu desktop, and then burn the files that way,.....Fat chance..Of course, I should realise by now that most things ubuntu does is not easy.I mean, this is absolute gibberish to me?Please tell my why i have to keep typing in code to use ubuntu!its not 1980!!Quote:really dont understand this..Or i may just have to switch back to xp.., i mean, im having to use an xp emulator anyway, lol.. whats the point in staying.

Ubuntu :: XP Install On VirtualBox From USB CD / DVD Drive

Mar 18, 2011

I am trying to install Windows XP on VirtualBox, using an external USB CD/DVD drive. VirtualBox boots to the CD/DVD and goes through the first part of the installation flawlessly. After XP restarts from the HD, however, it can't complete the installation because it can't find the files at "D:I386asms". (In fact, it doesn't seem to be able to access the CD/DVD drive at all.) I'm just guessing, but could this be because of how VirtualBox handles USB drives and/or because (if I recall) XP lacks native support for USB?

Hardware and software specs:
--Lenovo ThinkPad X201
--Asus SDRW-08D1S-U external USB CD/DVD drive
--Ubuntu 10.04.1 64-bit (kernel 2.6.32-30)
--VirtualBox 4.0.4 (from [URL])
--WinXP SP2 32-bit (original, retail install disc)

Software :: Add Another Drive Image To An Existing VM Using VirtualBox?

Aug 31, 2009

I have an issue with VirtualBox. My current setup is a machine running Fedora 10 with 1 Tb of disk space. I installed VirtualBox and created a fixed size disk image of 50 Gb for a virtual Windows XP64 OS. Now I require more disk space with additional 100 Gb. Is there a way to add another partition to the virtualized OS as if I added a new hard drive to the system?

In other words, I'd like to create another disk image by using additional space from the same physical drive and mount it under Windows XP in VirtualBox.

Slackware :: VirtualBox And USB Flash Drive Or ISO Image

Jan 4, 2011

I installed in my Slackware 13.1 with generic kernel 2.6.33.4-smp VirtualBox packages taken from SlackBuilds.org (acpica, virtualbox-ose and virtualbox-kernel). Then for testing purposes I installed in VirtualBox Windows XP using CD-ROM drive connected to USB port. It's a lot of fun to see Windows as an application in Linux!

Now I'm trying to install in VirtualBox Linux Mint using either USB flash drive prepared with unetbootin or mere ISO image. Without success. It seems VirtualBox 3.2.10 OSE doesn't recognize either USB flash drives or ISO images though it recognizes CD-ROM drive connected to USB port. I found some advices searching Internet but all of them are useless.

Ubuntu Networking :: Why Isn't 9.10 Picking Up My Wireless Signal?

Jan 25, 2010

I installed WICD because I was looking around the internet and the Ubuntu forums said that it was the best fix for the Network Manager not working. I added the source and installed the package like the Ubuntu site said. I go to Applications => Internet => Wicd Network Manager. It says no wireless networks found. I know that the router is working because my sister is right here next to me playing Maplestory on her laptop! When I do the lshw -C network function in the terminal it is only bringing up two things: the network controller and the ethernet controller. I used Yahoo Answers as my first goto and the answers there said that Linux doesn't have the drivers for the router. I have a Netgear Wireless-N 300 Router WNR2000 and a Dell Inspiron 1750, if that helps. Can someone give me a link to the drivers or tell me in detail what to do?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Picking Up Old OS Install

Dec 13, 2010

I've been having issues with mythbuntu since the last few upgrades, so I decided to go for a fresh install. Since I had a free partition (from a deleted Windows install that I moved to a dedicated box), I decided to leave the old root partition as a backup and reinstall to the new partition. If it works, I may use dd in the future to clone the partition as an easy backup solution before upgrades.

The install went fine but now GRUB2 detects both the old (now non-functional) install, as well as the new functional install.More annoyingly than that, it shows the defunct install first in the list, with the correct install at the end. Even odder, the correct install is auto-named with the partition name (sda5) of the old install, even though it's the one booting to the new partition (sda3).How can I get Grub2 to ignore the old install (or to be precise, NOT auto-detect other OS)? Or at least show the functional install first.

General :: Drivers - Picking A Compatible Motherboard

May 25, 2010

Last time I bought a new computer (I build them myself) I got a motherboard that had really poor linux support for a long time. Specifically the audio. I had to wait months before the kernel supported the on board audio chipset. That is exactly the situation I'm trying to avoid this time around.

I have some specific questions about "server motherboards" actually. I looked at a few models of server motherboards by intel, and some random models on newegg. I wasn't able to see much of a difference from regular desktop motherboard other than most had two sockets, and support for much more ram. These boards seem more popular with Linux users. Why?

AMD and Intel both have server CPUs as well. Some question, what's the difference?

To make this question more concrete, I was looking at this this motherboard. The main questions about it that I can't answer are:

Can I get a motherboard without on board raid and audio? I wanted to get a hardware raid controller and a PCI audio card. I thought a server motherboard would be cheaper and not have these "extras", since who wants an audio card on a server?

Where can I found out about Linux support for the components on this board? "Intel ICH10R", "Realtek ALC889", "Marvell 88E8056"

I'm buying this computer to work as a Linux desktop for a lot of compiling, coding and audio/video work, but I don't want to rule out the possibility of installing windows and playing some games at one point. (even if the last game I got has been sitting in its box unopened for almost a year). Is it a good idea to buy a "server motherboard" and play games on it, or are desktop boards better value for this?

The ultimate solution for me would be a motherboard that had GPL divers for onboard LAN, a single CPU socket, lots of PCI express and PCI. USB 3.0, and no fancy hard disk controllers since I'll be getting a separate one.

Debian :: Network Manager Not Picking Up Internet - Bin File Not Working

Jul 3, 2011

I've been dual booting Windows 7 and Debian on my desktop ever since. But recently I installed Debian again on a new laptop that I recently bought and unfortunately it's being very different from my first successful installation. The first problem is that Network Manager is not picking up internet on the new laptop. The Wireless tab is grayed out, so I can't click it and look for a new one. I've been using Wired internet since, but if I want to take it to work I have to have it be Wireless-able. Currently my Wireless Card is a Broadcom 4313 802.11 b/g/n which I'm fairly sure is supported. The second problem is installing Firefox. On my first installation it worked fine, and the bin file loaded and everything. However, for this second one that's been a completely different situation and the bin file hasn't worked (by this I mean I can't double click it to open it).
