I have had similar problems, on various M/c's e.g. Dell Gx620; Dell Optiplex 745;755;HP d530s; Hp s3340.uk , BUT on the Dell ultra small format Optiplex gx 620 ,745 and 755, i have had no problems ,but i have the same problems with Ubuntu 10.10 also, this also with open Suse 11.4, as i had not heard other people with the same problems ,i was wondering if it was my BT hard wired modem.
View 1 RepliesI've been dual booting Windows 7 and Debian on my desktop ever since. But recently I installed Debian again on a new laptop that I recently bought and unfortunately it's being very different from my first successful installation. The first problem is that Network Manager is not picking up internet on the new laptop. The Wireless tab is grayed out, so I can't click it and look for a new one. I've been using Wired internet since, but if I want to take it to work I have to have it be Wireless-able. Currently my Wireless Card is a Broadcom 4313 802.11 b/g/n which I'm fairly sure is supported. The second problem is installing Firefox. On my first installation it worked fine, and the bin file loaded and everything. However, for this second one that's been a completely different situation and the bin file hasn't worked (by this I mean I can't double click it to open it).

I had to wait months before the kernel supported the on board audio chipset. That is exactly the situation I'm trying to avoid this time around.
I have some specific questions about "server motherboards" actually. I looked at a few models of server motherboards by intel, and some random models on newegg. I wasn't able to see much of a difference from regular desktop motherboard other than most had two sockets, and support for much more ram. These boards seem more popular with Linux users. Why?
AMD and Intel both have server CPUs as well. Some question, what's the difference?
To make this question more concrete, I was looking at this this motherboard. The main questions about it that I can't answer are:
Can I get a motherboard without on board raid and audio? I wanted to get a hardware raid controller and a PCI audio card. I thought a server motherboard would be cheaper and not have these "extras", since who wants an audio card on a server?
Where can I found out about Linux support for the components on this board? "Intel ICH10R", "Realtek ALC889", "Marvell 88E8056"
I'm buying this computer to work as a Linux desktop for a lot of compiling, coding and audio/video work, but I don't want to rule out the possibility of installing windows and playing some games at one point. (even if the last game I got has been sitting in its box unopened for almost a year). Is it a good idea to buy a "server motherboard" and play games on it, or are desktop boards better value for this?
The ultimate solution for me would be a motherboard that had GPL divers for onboard LAN, a single CPU socket, lots of PCI express and PCI. USB 3.0, and no fancy hard disk controllers since I'll be getting a separate one.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like some help setting up using a wireless connection. I can connect using wired connection, and I have no trouble browsing. I have a strong wireless connection as well; however, when I try to browse I get a server not found error. I did download the necessary drivers. Before that, I didn't have a wireless connection. I was able to connect on this pc before the install, and all other devices still connect using wireless. I have a linksys router.
The one thing that stands out at me is the ip address that it says the wireless connection is using. It says it is 10.42.43.1
I feel like that might be problematic because I'm pretty sure my router only accepts connections with values that are between 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.200.

Icon on computer shows "wired connection 'auto Eth0'active" The router shows line connected ok. Computer shows connection is established. I have been using the 3 OS regularly with no problems. But today suddenly, I had no internet connection with the 2 linux partitions which are complete independent, but no problems with windows. i can keep using the internet under windows with no problems.
I haven't touched any conf files.
I have a usb wifi internet connection.
I just noticed a change in my dmesg file when i start any of my 2 linux partitions.

I just downloaded openSUSE 11 but I don't have an internet connection. I thought that it will find my cable connection automatically like Ubuntu does, but it didn't. It doesn't have a normal network configuration set-up, there is nowhere that it even gives me a choice to select local internet connection or a cable connection. What do I have to do to set it up.

Mine is direct cable connection using CAT5 cable terminted to my ethernet card. and I connect to the net using a dial-up connection. I think other end of the cable is terminated to a common switch.I have tried searching it over net. I am unable to connect to the Internet using a wired connection. I was able to use the wired network yesterday. But I had problems with the flash player, so had to reinstall Ubuntu again. I am able to connect to Internet using wireless connection. But I need to connect to the wired connection. I am using Ubuntu 10. In my IPv4 settings, it is automatically set to DHCP, using which, I was earlier able to connect. But now it doesn't seem to be happening.
But there are other entries on the syslog that were recent.

I installed ubuntu 10 just yesterday. Everything was working just fine. The auto-update function advised me to download and install the latest updates and so I did. It was over 300 MB. I installed it, did a reboot and my internet connection was lost. I tried a few things I found on this forum yesterday. Nothing worked. I can go on-line on the same computer using windows 7. But I always have to reboot to try the different solutions. All right that's fixed! But now I just have to fix Firefox...

Does your icon have code that that I can use or can I find the file somewhere and create a link? Alsa mixer works ok and nothing is muted and I have sound so as to play music.
