I got an old laptop from my brother, it has ubuntu 6 on it right now. The computer is real old, complete with a windows 95 and pentium II sticker on it. I'd like to put a new install on this but first I would like to find out how to check the hardware specs like processor and ram so i can choose what to install. How can i do that?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have two Linux computers and one small home router with DHCP functionality. I configured the router with the "dynamic DHCP" setting, ie, the static DHCP with MAC-Address was not used. Before that, I used the manual IP configuration, defining the two computers' names in the /etc/hosts file.
Example:
10.0.0.2 comp2
10.0.0.3 comp3
Now, with DHCP, the above example is no longer appropriate, because the DHCP server is supposed to tell the computer what IP number it will receive. However, I am missing something, because I haven't figured it out yet how to make one computer know the other computer's name. Is it that I haven't installed a name-finding package? Is there a simple way to accomplish this (one computer finding the other computers' names)?

i took the distro test and both said that mandriva would be good for me, so ima try that and see how it works out. ima use it for djing, maybe some games but prolly not not sure yet, and other than that just basic web surfing, burning movies, and just normal tasks.
In linux we have various types(ubuntu,red hat,fedora,....etc) which one is best to install in laptop and can be used easily when compared to windows

View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up a machine to "drive" a piece of equipment (a metal plate embosser [kind of like a daisywheel printer for credit card sized pieces of metal], FWIW). What I ideally want is a linux distro that I can boot from CD (I think the term is Live CD?), log itself in as a user and display only a console. It needs to be able to support windows fileshares and python.
Essentially it needs to boot, connect to a single fileshare on a Win2k8 machine, and be able to execute a couple of scripts that will output to a serial port. One of them will be more or less the following:
wget http://WEBSITE/?<parameter passed to script> --quiet --output-document=<name of serial port>
The other is a somewhat more complicated Python script that processes a CSV spreadsheet and produces data for the machine.

One of the big problems I'm having is with the Network Adapter. It won't work with Ubuntu or any Ubuntu based distros. Backtrack 4 won't even start for me (there's a problem with the ACPI, and I'm not sure how to turn it off on Backtrack). Is there any distribution that I won't have to mess with the Kernels too much (I tried Gentoo, but that was a bit over my head)
this is my first time actually asking for help here, so forgive me if I make any mistakes. The other day I was trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my mom's old system (not too old, has vista on it) and even from the live cd it wouldn't boot. Then I tried 8.04 because I know that works on my XP system. However it would freeze during boot but at least showed that it was booting (the bar was starting to fill).

Since we bought it it's been upgraded to 2 GB of ram and has a nVidia 8400gs video card and a belkin wireless adapter now. I can't understand why the live cds won't fully boot since my single core 2.2Ghz boots just fine with 8.04.
I was thinking of trying 6.06 to see of that might work. However I was unsure if the system is capable of running Ubuntu and might need Kubuntu or another distro.
My distribution upgrade got interrupted in a hard way and when I start the computer I get some errors:

or sth like this and a few more errors. Can't look the exact message as I am writing from the liveCD. On Gparted the boot looks normal and it is said that it's mounted but there is no mount point. There are things on the hard drive that I must save.
Have have a computer from 2001 with: 700 Mhz Celeron CPU, 640 MB RAM (gonna up it to 1GB soon), 64 MB graphics, 30 GB hard drive. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on this computer, but it runs slow. It's not unusable but slow. I was wondering in Fedora would run faster? I know it has lower system requirements but would it run faster on this older hardware?

I just finished cleaning all the connections with alcohol and putting the thing back together. I've got Ubuntu 5.10 on it right now, but with so little in the way of system resources, I want to get something more scaled down on there. Googling hasn't resulted in anything really useful.
So, does anybody know of a scaled down distro aimed at old computers? Obviously something current would be great (I considered trying to find a netbook distro and use that, but I don't know if there would be any issues using that kind of thing on a desktop.) but I'd be willing to use an older distro if I need to. I really just want to use it as a writing machine, with maybe some basic internet access.
i installed ubuntu to multiboot with windows 7 but i don't know how to remove it to where its just windows again you can't delete the partiton ecause grub comes up how do i make it go back to the way it was before i installed ubuntu

I am trying to decrease volume of noise coming from computer as much possible, till one point from where I don't know exactly what's the source of noise.
"That noise" starts coming out of computer few seconds about booting, not while POST test, and then it's constant. To me it seems like it's coming out of cpu, but not fan. (I have disconnected all hard drives, have gpu with passive cooling installed, and it's still there. Cpu is AM3 socket AMD Phenom II 810 processor, and motherboard is Asus M4A78T-E.
Also, my other computers with Intel and other AMD processors does not produce such a noise.
Does that noise come out of CPU? is it some "computing sign" of processor (assuming that during first seconds of booting are perfectly quiet), or kind of general problem of AMD (or AM3 socket) cpus.
I have a dell CPi laptop that I only want to use for connecting to my office computer via freenx. The laptop has a pcmcia wifi card, 4gb hard drive space, 128mb ram, and is a Pentium II 400mhz. Can you recommend a linux distro for me? I won't use any features other than freenx and wifi, so i'm sure this laptop is fast enough for that.

I've been thinking of turning my old computer into a media center for a while now (it was running Ubuntu Server 9.10). I recently bought a new 23inch screen so.. out with the server, in with the media center! (currently Xubuntu but running on LXDE as it's a lot lighter) My problem: The computer barely manages to play 720p videos on XBMC (on ..... or totem/vlc it's just impossible with breaks, lag and constant freezes).. I used the debug function of XBMC and guess what.. a 720p movie takes my cpu to a constant 100% usage!! =X
So here's my question.. what distro or 'buntu flavor would you advise me to use?? I thought about a minimal install but don't want to try it just yet..
