I have maverick meerkat. I'm tryting to play a video but it has a VP7 codec and VLC will not play it. I installed mplayer but it doesnt show up in the sound and video menu options. I have Movie Player but not Mplayer Movie Player?

After updating totem to the very latest version (May 12, 3 days ago) the problem happened to be likely from the source: gstreamer. So I tried to install the latest version of gstreamer, and it worked (the default one packaged in Ubuntu is dated 2008...).

I try using xine to play AVI files, but it reports a codec missing while mplayer plays it just fine. I use F11 with all the latest updates.

I also have faac, libfaac0, faad, and libfaad2 installed. But when viewing some videos or trying to transcode to anything with the aac codec I get the "no AAC" error.How can I fix this?

for example if I want to create a an "Empty File", I'll right-click on desktop and when I want to go to "Create Document" menu, it doesn't show up! so I must click somewhere else and try again so for the second time it works!!

I havev tried to play the audio with smplayer (not luck), vlc can play the audio but the pause button doesn't work so I have to listen the entire audio all the time I stop it playing. I got a webcam and it works fine with cheese, skype and many other programs. But with jmf or mplayer it doesn't work.
With mplayer I used this command mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l:width=640:height=480:device=/dev/video0
Both jmf and mplayer just give static looking like this [url]
ready some 3gp files so had to install the w32codecs and mplayer version from the medibuntu repository. Now I can play back these files perfectly with mplayer from teh command line but when I open them with smplayer there is no video, just (choppy) sound. Xine also plays them back now although it didn't before. I know the first time I ran smplayer on this installation I had to choose which version of mplayer it was running with but don't know if I can do this again to tell it to use the installed medibuntu mplayer. Then I've compiled and install mplayer with --prefix=/usr.
Checking for libmp3lame ... yes (in FFmpeg: yes)
Checking for Xvid ... yes
mencoder -ovc help shows xvid (it works) but no mp3lame at all. And mplayer uses ffmpeg [ffmp3float], which extremely distors tracks. I'm sure it's not alsa, because music played online sounds normal.
How can I get mplayer to play files over the network? It seems like I am not the only one that wants this feature. Does anyone got a work around for this?

I'm used to Peer Guardian 2 in Windows and I know it has to show some more stuff than nothing.. Your help is sincerely appreciated cuz I'm so new to Ubuntu. FYI: Mobloquer and Peer Guardian 2 are IP blocking programs.

I'm experiencing overheating problems, after just 15-20 minutes of minimal use (surfing the internet, not even watching flash vids or any other vids). The same laptop under Windows 7 64 bit stayed really cool.
I've read several posts here and followed this manual: [URL] to try to control the fans (I only installed the lm-sensors and ran the sensors command, I didn't do anything beyond that). Specifically what I did was install lm-sensors (via apt-get), ran sensors-detect which advised me to add the coretemp module to /etc/modules, which I did.
However when running sensors the only information I get is the overall temperature and the temperature of each of the cores.
why I'm not getting fan speed info when running sensors? Also is there a way to find out if more modules needs to be added to /etc/modules?

View 3 Replies View Relatedwhy the bootloader won't show up when I turn on the PC. The only things that come up with search results are 'Why ubuntu isn't on the boatloader' but my problem is is that the boot loader doesn't even SHOW UP.
Installation went completely fine, downloaded a version 10 32-bit iso file and then put in the folder with wibu and it asked me to restart. Restarted the PC, nothing came up so I thought you might have to restart again, restarted again, still no bootloader.
After looking in the 'Add/Remove Programs' of Windows it does say it's installed, so why the bootloader isn't showing up is rather mindbobbling.
I have a new netbook - "Eee PC 1005PE-PU27-BK" and installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04, Kernel Linux 2.6.32-24-generic. I love Ubuntu, but I also want to be able to access Windows 7 if I can. I'm facing a boring problem and I cant understand why it is happening. Im running Evolution 2.28.3 on Ubuntu 10.04, and all the messages are not showing their images. I already did the following confs:
1) Change proxy to connect "Directly to the internet"
2)In Preferences, "Load images from contacts".
3)I tried the option "Load Images" ou CTRL+I.
I have an ASUS M4A785-m and it has the Realtek 8112L gigabit nic. The weird thing is, the 10.10 rc saw the nic card just fine, and windows sees the card so it's not disabled in the bios.
Ubuntu says i have no network connections and i need to get internet. Any suggestions?
I should also note that i'm running from the livecd and lspci shows that it detects my NIC. but my NIC isn't "detected" in that it can be used.
I've just upgraded to Maverick and as the Me menu works with Empathy I started to use it as my default IM client.
But no matter what I do, it won't show my picture.
I tried resizing the picture to 96x96, I tried to convert it from jpg to png. I tried uninstalling the program with apt-get remove --purge. I tried also removing the ~/config/Empathy directory and all others related to the program and then reinstalling it but nothing seems to work.

Nautlius doesn't show all the files that are in a folder From the screenshots below you can see that there are more files in the folder (ls from the terminal shows them all), however nautilus doesn't. Other .mkv files show up in other folders so its not that
I've tired turning off previews and that didn't work. Running nautilus as root didn't work either
I installed it from a cd and it wouldn't work. (froze in the process). I then tried to install it through windows wubi and that didn't work (wouldnt boot) since I was unaware it was a known issue and thought it was me doing something wrong I uninstalled it,reformatted the hard drive and tried to install via a cd again this time it fully iinstalled but when I rebooted it tells me unable to mount drives and a shell will be shown.

So, as the title says Windows 7 doesn't show up in GRUB2's selection menu, but it does show my Windows XP professional option that I had before Linux and then reinstalled. After searching very long for the problem in Linux and GRUB2 I decided to boot into XP, witch gave me the option for Windows 7 or older versions of Windows -> so I eventually can boot to it! So here is the real question: How can I make an entry for Windows 7 and for Windows XP? This is because I'd like to use a theme for GRUB and it would be to stupid to make GRUB look nice if I then come to a stupid screen of the Windows loader!

In its console, I configure HTTP mode and Remote host name 149.XXX.XXX.XXX but there is no picture shown and when I use probe in console,it reads "unable to probe network cameras status is 127".

It shows about 3.4 to 3.6GB of RAM (please see attached picture).I thought that if I could install a 64-bit OS that would mean that I have a 64-bit capable processor. I thought using a 64-bit release would show all 4GB or RAM on my PC. What am I doing wrong? My CPU is a Pentium 4 Prescott DT 630.

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my second hard drive, and now I can't boot into Vista (installed on hard drive #1). Grub2 just doesn't seem to be recognizing that there is a Windows Vista installation on the first hard drive.
I followed this guide (with Fabien's changes) because it seemed like they were having the exact same problem. But after rebooting, Vista is still not showing in the GRUB menu. In fact, the GRUB menu doesn't even show up unless I press Shift because it thinks that Ubuntu is the only OS installed on my computer.

When I was installing Ubuntu to HD2 (the 500gb one), I got a peculiar message saying that Windows was installed on it. There wasn't anything on HD2 though, because Windows Vista was most definitely installed on HD1.
However, if I chose to overwrite HD1 with Ubuntu, the message wouldn't come up. It seemed like the installer was confused as to which hard drive actually held my Windows Vista install.
