View 9 Repliesready some 3gp files so had to install the w32codecs and mplayer version from the medibuntu repository. Now I can play back these files perfectly with mplayer from teh command line but when I open them with smplayer there is no video, just (choppy) sound. Xine also plays them back now although it didn't before. I know the first time I ran smplayer on this installation I had to choose which version of mplayer it was running with but don't know if I can do this again to tell it to use the installed medibuntu mplayer. I'm at a bit of a loss as to why the front-end smplayer would not simply play files with the exact same results as mplayer from the CLI. I haven't rebooted since,

View 2 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading to 64-bit Karmic, I can't play any WMA files, neither in Rhythmox, Totem, VLC, or mplayer. It used to work well with 64-bit Intrepid.
I've added the medibuntu repos and installed ubuntu-restricted-extras (including w64codecs). Still, when rhythmbox or totem opens a WMA file, they search for an appropriate codec and don't find anything.
is there a way to make it work with .ape files? i try to open ape files and it will open instead a prompt window in songbird asking which program to open the file with.

View 10 Replies View RelatedRunning Lucid Lynx. VLC works fine but Xvmc output uses less CPU on my PIII 750 laptop and isn't supported by VLC. I installed Mplayer but I can't play anything from the Mplayer GUI. I get the message "FATAL: Could not initialize video filters (-vf) or video output (-vo)". The interface is all black so I can't see the controls. I installed Gnome Mplayer GUI and now I have different problems. Playing video files, including VOB files from a DVD works fine. Trying to play a DVD with or without menues does not. I followed the instructions at URL.... What could be wrong?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI currently have mplayer installed with the binary codecs in place, but it seems that mplayer is quite picky with which files it wants to play.
I have three files that are all mp4 h264 .mkv's. One of them is ~20 minutes long (720p) and mplayer seems to do just fine. Another is around ~90 minutes (1080p) and within seconds the audio gets out of sync. The third file is also around ~90 minutes long (1080p) and refuses to play at all, throwing a mess of:
[h264 @ 0x5fdbac0]AVC: Consumed only 1 bytes instead of 521
Error while decoding frame!
The machine is fairly old (Athlon 64 X2 4200+), but I don't think it's a hardware performance issue. When it was running Windows XP it could handle any HD video I threw at it. Each one of these files plays perfectly on my Windows machine with Media Player Classic Home Cinema + ffmpeg...
Is there something wrong with ffmpeg or is support for h264 just not there yet?
After many days of trying to tweak Ubuntu 9.10 desktop i386. This subject will focus on my dvd drive. ...Here is what I have done, but I'm not sure what I did or still need to do, or to do different. ...
Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.
When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.
I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.
I came across the Medibuntu site: [url]
Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)
Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)
I got a webcam and it works fine with cheese, skype and many other programs. But with jmf or mplayer it doesn't work.
With mplayer I used this command mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l:width=640:height=480:device=/dev/video0
Both jmf and mplayer just give static looking like this [url]
I need to play or preferably convert (i.e. to MP3) old SNG files, which contain voice records. From what I could find, it's basically a MIDI created by synthetiser. I think it was recorded by some ancient VLC player. I failed so far to play it on anything I could download.

Whenever I plug my Zune in, Rhythmbox recognizes all the songs on it but when I doubleclick on a song to play it, the song doesn't play and Rhythmbox quits. Any suggestions on how to fix it? I'm running a Dell XPS 410 with 4GB RAM and a 1.75 GHz processor. Also, I imported a CD and it plays fine.

The problem is that none of the video players doesn't play video, they show only black window and play audio.
I have Fedora 11 Leonidas, fully up-to-date.
I have installed rpmfusion and livna repository.
I have installed following packages:
When I try to play video with totem, it doesn't output any error, but just doesn't play video.
with mplayer:
xine and kaffeine just say:

I tried several different files, which works perfectly in windows and ubuntu.
I installed windows binary codecs for mplayer to /usr/lib/codec/
I have tried to play mp3 files with sox play.
The result I get is:
play FAIL formats: no handler for file extension `mp3'
I have installed all libsox packages I could find, including libsox-fmt-mp3 and libmad0.
sox -h though, gives me:
AUDIO FILE FORMATS: 8svx aif aifc aiff aiffc al amb amr-nb amr-wb anb au avi avr awb cdda cdr cvs cvsd cvu dat dvms f32 f4 f64 f8 ffmpeg flac fssd gsm gsrt hcom htk ima ircam la lpc lpc10 lu m4a m4b maud mp4 mpg nist ogg prc raw s1 s16 s2 s24 s3 s32 s4 s8 sb sds sf sl sln smp snd sndfile sndr sndt sou sox sph sw txw u1 u16 u2 u24 u3 u32 u4 u8 ub ul uw vms voc vorbis vox wav wavpcm wmv wv wve xa
PLAYLIST FORMATS: m3u pls

(no mp3 mentioned there).
The reason I try to play mp3 files with sox is that I wanted to play a playlist with different formats and feed it to ices2 through a pipe, ie :
sox Musik/storlista.pls -t raw - | ices2 ices-pcm.xml sox
FAIL formats: no handler for file extension `mp3'

I have a Intel Q6600 and a GTX480 with the latest drivers on OpenSUSE 11.4. Qt 4.7.1
On VLC 1.1.8/1.2.0 I've tried X11 video out, XVideo video out and GLX video out. I've also tried enabling hardware decoding under Advanced > Inputs/Codecs > FFmpeg to no avail.
On MPlayer 0.6.9, I set my cores to 4, and and tried XVideo output and VDPAU output.
I am on Squeeze. In the past I have successfully extracted audio from video files. Recently when I try it I get an unplayable file, just some brief noise nothing more. Mplayer on the other hand plays every video and audio file out there. Is there something wrong with mplayer? I installed mplayer from the repo. I haven't compile mplayer since before Lenny.

If I play the file from a terminal with gmplayer no errors are reported...
I was wondering if you could help me out with this Flash problem: sometimes, Flash elements don't play in my browser window - there's just a big white area where my Flash should be. I have to close and re-open Firefox. This especially happens when I activate the "Flashblock" plugin, a very useful tool that blocks all Flash unless you click on it and choose to play it. Whenever I have that enabled, most of the time, clicking on the "play" button produces the white area where the Flash object should be. It's Karmic 64 and Firefox 3.5, Shockwave Flash 10.0.
