Ubuntu :: Used Wubi Install - Shut Down Improperly, Now Won't Boot?

Jan 14, 2010

I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 approx 1 week ago and it's been fine. Last night, Ubuntu froze while I was running several programs. I wasn't sure how to pull up any type of 'task manager' and the mouse didn't move so after several minutes I was forced to hard reboot the computer. Grub starts and allows me to select Ubuntu but won't get past the log-in screen (allows me to log-in but freezes immediately after hitting enter). I started the recovery mode and the errors show what I believe to be sector errors (?)Do I need to run a 'chkdsk' from Windows or re-install Ubuntu? If deleting/un-installing Ubuntu (through Wubi) is necessary, is this a problem directly related to Wubi (i.e. is a clean install on a seperate partition better than installing through Wubi)?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To CD Boot For Non-Wubi Install

Dec 27, 2010

I've been unable to do a non-Wubi install of U 10.10 desktop 32 bit. My setup:

HP p6240f , Intel Core2 Quad Q8300 2.5 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache, 1333 MHz FSB

Currently, I have a clean install of Windows XP (updated) on my desktop. Previously, I used a clean install of Windows 7, but ran into the same problems below. My U install problems are:

1.) Live CD will not boot upon restarting PC. As per the U documentation web site (URL) , md5sums confirmed that proper .iso copy was downloaded and burned to CD. (However, see log file below for md5 error)

2.) "Installing CD boot helper" does not work. I receive the following error message: "Could not retrieve the required installation files", and it refers to a log file. An excerpt of the log file is below.

Ubuntu Installation :: Forcing Windows 7 Boot In Wubi Install (9.10)?

Apr 14, 2010

I recently did a Wubi install of 9.10 on my netbook that initially ran Windows 7 Starter. I wanted to speed up the booting process so I went into Windows and set the OS selection list waiting time to be 0 and the default OS to be ubuntu. I did this assuming that there is a way to force OS selection list to be brought up during boot; I think I was wrong. So now, I'm stuck booting directly into 9.10 (not even a full install!). Is there a way to either modify the Windows boot file to reset the selection list timer or to force the list to be brought back out?

EDIT: I should note that editing the grub files within the wubi install would only make changes to the GRUB loader, which has no effect on the actual Windows loader.

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic (wubi Install) Won't Boot After Dist-upgrade?

Jan 11, 2010

i have Karmic installed with Wubi inside a Vista NTFS filesystem. Yesterday i did an apt-get dist-upgrade and Karmic never booted again. It won't even show the grub kernel list, it just shows some really quick text that vanishes before i can even figure out what it is and then drops to some sort of grub shell and then i can't figure out what to do.

I could boot a livecd and mount my karmic install and everything seems fine, the filesystem is clean and all that. But how do i fix it so it can boot again?

Does anyone here know wtf happened? Was there a bad upgrade or something?

Fedora X86/64bit :: Running F11 I586 On Laptop / System Shut Off (not A Normal OS Shut Down, But A Sudden Power Off Without Warning)?

Oct 13, 2009

Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.
Machine specifications:
Maker: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L305D-S5881
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70
3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?
Your advise would be highly appreciated.

Ubuntu :: Acpi=off Required To Boot, But Won't Shut Down?

Feb 17, 2010

I've built several computers and installed Ubuntu on each one, and I've never had problems until my latest build. Here are the problems:The computer requires acpi=off to boot, and it won't boot with acpi=ht. I've searched for this, and there's a widely reproduced acpi troubleshooting guide that says that this means that there's something wrong with the acpi tables themselves, but I haven't found any fixes. If I go ahead and use acpi=off, then the computer works fine, but it hangs on shutdown. I've searched for this too, and the consensus seems to be to remove acpi=off from the boot options. This, of course, is not an option for me.

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot With Wubi?

Jan 7, 2010

We have a computer lab at school that ITS is trying to get ready before the semester starts. ITS is willing to put a wubi install on all the windows 7 machines in the lab after some faculty asked for a linux option. However they don't really support linux and basically need our help if any problems arise. After getting one machine to boot up nicely they used symantec ghost to make an image and put it on all the machines (I don't know the details on this but this is what I gather). However, no machine will boot into Ubuntu 9.10 unless one edits the boot options upon choosing Ubuntu from the windows 7 bootloader. I suspect there is a subtle problem that lies from ghosting the one machine.

Ubuntu :: Could Not Boot Into Wubi

May 16, 2011

Alright, I've had Wubi running on my Windows 7 PC for a few months now and it's great. I had given Wubi 5GB of space when I installed. After using it for some time, I decided I wanted some more space for my Wubi install. I looked up how to do it and came across a few options. The one I chose is this one: "Download wubi-add-virtual-disk, open a terminal and run: Code: sudo sh wubi-add-virtual-disk /home 15000

Where the first argument is the directory to move to a new dedicated disk, and the second argument is the size in MB. You should now reboot. If you are happy with the result, you can now remove /home.backup. To undo the changes remove /home, copy rename /home.backup to /home and remove the /home line in /etc/fstab."

The only problem - after I rebooted, I could not boot into Wubi. It has an error when I try, but it goes away too quickly for me to read, then it just restarts my computer. How can I fix this without having to reinstall Wubi completely? I'm willing to reinstall if it's the absolute only option, but I'm willing to try anything to get it working again. Oh, and I found another way to change the space, so no worries about that. I just have to get back into Wubi to do it...

Ubuntu :: WUBI Won't Boot; Drives Don't Appear In /dev

Jul 27, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with Windows XP, installed from the live CD via WUBI. I believe that GRUB is 1.97~.

Everyting was working just fine until after applying some of the upgrades in the upgrade manager; now Ubuntu will not boot. Instead, it starts up the GRUB console with an error message saying that it can't find the kernel.

If you type ls, you see the following:

Code:
>ls
(loop0) (hd0) (hd0,1)

(loop0) is the Ubuntu loopback drive, (hd0,1) is the Windows drive (the real hard drive) and they are intact. I am able to set the root to (loop0) and you can see the files. But the hard drive and the loopback drive do not appear in /dev, so you can't mount them. To be precise, there are no devices beginning with "sd" listed in /dev.

I am able to boot the computer from the live CD, which automatically mounts the hard drive; from the live CD, I can mount the loopback drive thus.

Code:
> sudo mkdir /media/wubi
> sudo mount -o loop /media/8834C7D034C7C004/ubuntu/disks/root.disk /media/wubi
So they are not broken.

How can I make the drives appear in /dev when booting from GRUB?

(BTW, Windows XP broke during an upgrade a month ago, and it won't boot, either. I will try to fix that now that I have saved my files from the computer through Ubuntu.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot With CD Or Wubi

Sep 1, 2010

I have recently discovered ubuntu and like it's elegance and simplicity and want to learn more about it "hands on". To this end I have tried to put it on one of my PC's running the Vista SP2 OS...When i try to install it with the CD the drive spins up then starts "hunting"..next the PC shuts down..black screen monitor.no KB or Mouse..the monitor flashes a box saying "power saving mode" then all is dead except for the power button being lit..I have to manually turn the PC off to recover...Next i did a D/L of wubi and rebooted as advised.Selected ubuntu on the BIOS and had the same final result as B4 with the CD. I have D/L and burned 2 CD's, one with my XP machine and the other with the Vista machine..Both CD's work as advertised on my XP machine (i did the "live" install) but not the Vista. The Vista machine is an HP with: AMD Athlon 64x2 3800+ CPU..3 GB of RAM..250 GB HDD. I do not like Vista ( i inherited the machine) it's a pain in the posterior. IMHO ubuntu and it's ilk are the way to go and i intend to do just that one way or the other.

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot Wubi Version Of 10.04

Dec 5, 2010

I have been running Ubuntu (Wubi) for about 2 - 3 months now and it has been flawless.

I start up the computer. I get the choice to book windows 7 or Ubuntu I choose Ubuntu and then I get the list of boot installers to choose from and it is play time.

Today when I went to get onto my Ubuntu install, I got the first window asking if I want Windows or Ubuntu and when I chose Ubuntu, rather than going to the Grub boot menu, the laptop would just restart and go back to the first window asking if I wanted windows 7 or Ubuntu.

It seems the Grub boot files are gone. Now I have read that the fix for this is to use a live disk of Ubuntu to reinstall Grub2 BUT it is my impression the Wubi does not install Ubuntu "normally"

Can I rescue Grub using a live disk as if ubuntu was installed directly yo a partition from a regular ISO or is there another way to do it if it was installed by Wubi?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Boot Wubi

May 23, 2011

I'm a bit of an Ubuntu virgin. Well, I've had a dabble in Ubuntu before and it was enjoyable, though I panicked when I accidently deleted the bootloader for Windows so I decided to get rid of Ubuntu. Which comes to my next point. [EDIT] When I deleted the bootloader, I used a Windows 7 Recovery CD which got me back on to the OS - which I think messed up the Ubuntu part of the bootloader [/EDIT] I've currently tried to install Wubi 5 times now - I've created a dedicated partition of 20gb for it as well. Now it downloads Ubuntu and installs it correctly (from what I can see) but when I come to select Ubuntu on start up (the option IS there).. I get a this black screen:

Quote: [URL] And unfortunately I don't know what to do afterwards. Is there any chance of someone knowing what to do with this? I've read many forums and I don't usually come on to a forum to actually ask for help - but it's time, I want to use Ubuntu! I've always wanted Ubuntu as my main OS.

Software :: Overlaying An Image Onto A GIF Animation With Imagemagick Gets Aligned Improperly?

May 16, 2011

I'm on Ubuntu 11.04, and am trying to overlay a static blue coastline image onto a geostationary GIF animation with 12 frames using imagemagick. The code I used to create the composite animation is as follows:

Code:

convert ( animation.gif -coalesce ) null: ( outline.tif -coalesce ) -layers Composite composite_animation.gif

The resulting animation is below:

[URL]

It's a bit hard to see, but the blue outline should be aligned much farther to the left on the image, but the vast majority of it is cut-off to the right because it is shifted so far. It should be centered. Both the outline and the background are actually cropped regions out of respectively larger images that are identical in size and are designed to be overlaid.

If I choose a cropped region farther to the right on the background animation, the cropped blue outline of the same region won't even show up at all after the overlaying, as if it is shifted completely off the screen for some reason. I have had success overlaying outlines before with the above command, but here it is not working. I tried appending "-gravity center" to the command with no success.
