I'm currently running server version 6.10 and would like to upgrade to the current release (10.04). Can someone point me toward the proper resources/documentation for accomplishing this?
View 9 RepliesI've not really need the computer for much for a while and have let the updates slip! I've got 9.04 and obviously need a newer version. I read that it's best to upgrade to 9.10 first then go from there, but my version is so old all the information is using update manager (just click this button blah blah) but of course this isn't supported now so can't use that method.
I don't really know any other way to upgrade other than following the links in update manager
ps forgot to say my cd coping sometimes messes up, don't know if it's software or hardware so was looking for methods to avoid downloading onto cds then upgrading from that! but will have to try this if no other way
I have a Dell Mini 10V running Ubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS. I need to upgrade to the latest version of Linux. Which of the latest versions I can upgrade to and exactly which download to use (a reference to the actual download and page it is on) to be able to upgrade. I have looked at the many different versions and types of downloads and have no idea which to choose to be able to use the correct one.

This should show the option to upgrade to the latest alpha release of natty. Through the terminal this can be done using the same command but you need use.

I've manually installed the latest NVIDIA display drivers from the website (newer than the restricted driver package that came with 9.10). When there is a new Linux kernel, or a newer Ubuntu version, will I need to uninstall that driver before upgrading? Will having this driver cause any special installation issues during upgrade (such as the need to reinstall the driver after upgrading)? I am using 9.10 through Wubi.

If I go to the website and download the ISO file is it the exact same one that was released in April or will it contain the latest patches (e.g. security fixes, etc) that have been release since then? If it doesn't I suppose I'll have to download the entire ISO file, install the OS, and then have another couple hundred MB to download which is not what I'd prefer.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Kubuntu 9.10 (I think, the latest anyway) on my gf's computer. Everything works great, except for the sound output. The volume control works, (both the buttons on the computer and inside Kubuntu) but there is no sound output whatsoever (not in vlc, system sound etc). Ive googled a little, and I've seen some tips about get it, right click in on sound settings in the panel, and choosing preferences, I don't seem to have that tab, however I've got a "show mixer window" where I the can adjust volume.
I've got 2 tabs here ; 'HDA ATI SB' and 'HDA ATI HDMI' I guess the first one is the one that is the ordinary output, the other if I connect a tv or something. I've also read something about 'alsa' and 'alsamix' I don't seem to have that one, and I've tried sudo apt- but I've haven't been able to find it. I dont know if it is of any importance, but it is the 64bit version of Kubuntu. I'm not sure about exactly what soundcard and driver I've got, but the computer (laptop) is a pretty new HP, and when I run:

to see all the packages installed in my Ubuntu. The question is that I want to uninstall the latest package but there's no date in the package list made by the command "dpkg -l". so how can I do that?

Can anybody confirm this?The other thing though is when I successfully install the tar package, why if I try sudo apt-get install dvb-apps is it wanting to install it, as if the tar was never installed?

But almost all the recent blog posts re VLC 1.1.4 point to PPAs that only support Lucid and/or Maverick.The version of VLC in the Ubuntu depositories is 1.0.2 which is not only old but has a security leak; the VLC homepage warns against using it!
I suspect the problem here is that VLC is in the middle of rolling-out hardware acceleration and there's a bunch of different versions of it now (with and without the new VA-API enabled ffmpeg). So it's a moving target. But surely there's a better alternative for Karmic users than just 1.0.2?The best I've been able to come up with is the 'Nvidia Cutting Edge Multimedia' PPA which has VLC 1.1.0ppa:nvidia-vdpau/cutting-edge-multimedia
This is old P4 laptop, Intel845G graphics (which I know is very troublesome).However, it works fine with the 2.6.35.22, but the update to 2.6.35.23 kills X during the boot process. Everything else works fine.Anyone else experiencing any difficulty with X and this kernel update?
