Ubuntu :: Windows Driver Firmware - Error "Wireless Connection (Firmware Missing)"

Jun 4, 2011

after installing Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04, I'm experiencing tons and tons of complications with the wireless Internet connection. I have solved most of them. Now I have only one thing left. When I hit the drop-down menu for wireless connections, it says "Wireless connection (Firmware missing)"

I have installed the driver for my wireless card but what is the firmware? I honestly don't know what it is although it's very basic. I have a Broadcom 43xx as my wireless card (specifically 4306). How do I get the firmware for it? Do I find it in Windows? Also I cannot get b43-fwcutter because I have absolutely to Internet connection on Ubuntu. To post this, I'm using Windows.

Ubuntu Networking :: Install Drivers/firmware Because Presumably There Is No Out Of The Box Support

Sep 16, 2010

I'm a first time user of ubuntu and any other form of Linux. I decided to install ubuntu on an old Dell Latitude D600. The LAN controller is a Broadcom BCM4306 [14e4;4320] (rev 02). I honestly thought that once I installed ubuntu I would have no problem connecting to my wireless router. I was wrong.

A FAQ on this forum states that I need to install drivers/firmware because presumably there is no out of the box support. I read the FAQ [URL]..Debian and it seems that I need to get the driver/firmware then issue some command to put it where it needs to go.

Ubuntu :: Acer Aspire 5100 Uses A Broadcom LAN - Install The Firmware

May 12, 2011

After loading Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 5100, I find that the onboard LAN does not work. My router "sees" the laptop but my laptop does not "see" the router. Ubuntu says that the firmware is not installed.

I read earlier posts about an issue with Broadcom and later editions of Ubuntu but I haven't seen a definitive fix. With the LAN not working, it is not possible to connect to the Internet and further compounds the problem. My understanding is that the Acer Aspire 5100 uses a Broadcom LAN. How can I install the firmware that it is asking for?

OpenSUSE Install :: Saving The Result From The Firmware Test Of 11.2 DVD?

From the start-up manual I know the Firmware Test Starts a BIOS checker that validates ACPI and other parts of your BIOS. I noticed there are 3 failures in the result. (The font size on the screen is too small for me to read.) I got stuck in trying to save to either of the two choices provided with names I don't understand. I had to use the three-finger salute to bail me out.

OpenSUSE Install :: Installing 11.3 64-bit Version On A Macbook Pro (5,4 Firmware 1.8)?

Aug 13, 2010

I am trying to install OpenSuse 11.3 64-bit version on a Macbook Pro (5,4 firmware 1.8). The laptop will only run Linux and no OSX so I want to use the entire disk for OpenSuse. With that in mind, during install I switch to expert mode:

1. Delete all partitions
2. Create a new "msdos" partition table
3. Create sda1 as ext4, format and mount "/" on it
4. Create sda2 and assign it as swap partition
5. Continue the remaining install as normal.

After reboot, grub loads up but boot hangs at:

Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format

For context, I have tried Fedora and Ubuntu on this laptop and both hang at "Uncompression Error -- System halted" error. I ran memtest on the laptop and all LiveCDs run fine on it so that rules out hardware issues. My guess is that with Fedora and Ubuntu, both use grub2 and there is some complication with grub2. CentOS and OpenSuse seem to use grub and that gets me as far as loading the kernel but then boot hangs after initrd loading at the error above.

Debian Installation :: How To Force Load Realtek-firmware Driver During Install

Dec 25, 2015

Now, my issue is that I have no access to ethernet in my apartment so I need to rely on wifi for my install. But during the install when it is looking for the network hardware it never sees the TP-Link Dongle and never asks if I wan to load the firmware. I even tried it with the CD image that has the non-free drivers included but it never asks for the drivers. Any other distro, like Linux Mint 7.3, sees the dongle fine.

So is there a way to force load the realtek-firmware drivers during install?

Ubuntu :: Install LATEST Sun JRE Java From Terminal?

Feb 20, 2011

First you'll want to remove the old JRE or openJDK (if you have it). When JRE is installed from the repositories, do it like this: System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

Query: sun java Tick all installed packages and choose complete removal. When it's installed manually in /opt/java, see the instruction at the bottom of this column (under the header Removal). If you don't have JRE, then you'll probably have openJDK. That one should be completely removed as well. That can also be done with Synaptic Package Manager (query: openjdk).

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop3
