Ubuntu Installation :: Latest NVIDIA Display Driver - Uninstall If Upgrading ?

Apr 22, 2010

I've manually installed the latest NVIDIA display drivers from the website (newer than the restricted driver package that came with 9.10). When there is a new Linux kernel, or a newer Ubuntu version, will I need to uninstall that driver before upgrading? Will having this driver cause any special installation issues during upgrade (such as the need to reinstall the driver after upgrading)? I am using 9.10 through Wubi.

Ubuntu Installation :: Manual NVIDIA Driver Uninstall Headache?

Jan 15, 2010

Long ago (Back in the Intrepid Ibex days) I ran a manual upgrade of NVIDIA drivers from NVIDIA's website, in an attempt to get Wine running better on my system. Now every time I run upgrade manager, this message (or something similar) pops up twice every time I run upgrade manager:Code:The system has detected an obsolete NVIDIA driver in your system. Please install nvidia-glx-185 at the end of the installation with the following command:sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-185The removal of other NVIDIA drivers will be dealt with automatically.I actually have nvidia's 190 drivers installed, so the error message is a bit of a misnomer. This message has been persistent with every upgrade, and appeared many times during the Karmic upgrade.

Now I understand when I did this originally every time I get a kernel upgrade and rebooted I'd need to reinstall NVIDIA's drivers. But ever since my Karmic upgrade, things seem to be a bigger hassle than normal.. The system almost locks up after reboot. Compiz now seems crippled and I've disabled it just to get a decent framerate. What I'd really like to do is go back to Karmic's NVIDIA drivers and not have to deal with update problems anymore. However, when I attempt to reinstall Karmic's NVIDIA drivers, I just can't seem to make this error message go away or get the drivers to work. I end up frustrated an hour later, reinstalling NVIDIA's drivers because something is broken and I just can't get jaunty's drivers working at all.

Ubuntu :: No Display After Driver Uninstall - ATI Radeon

Sep 24, 2010

The last few weeks I have been dual monitoring from my lcd monitor to my hdtv. LCD was connected via vga and my tv via hdmi. To my knowledge, my pc has two graphic cards, both ATI Radeons. One I believe is on the mother board, ATI Radeon 4200HD series, and the other is in a PCI slot ATI Radeon 5600HD series. I think that when I had it dual monitored the tv was connected via 4200HD and LCD via 5600HD (could be wrong).

What I Did: Everything was working fine (i was mainly just using the HDTV as my only monitor and main monitor). As you can guess I was gaming on the hdtv, but I was not satisfied with the slight lag I felt. So I looked at forums to see what I could do and they mostly said 1) change settings on tv to game mode, 2) turn off vsync on your graphics card. So I did #1, but when I tried to do #2 I could not open my graphics cards "menu" aka CCC aka Catalyst Command Center.

So I read up on why this might happen and they said I should uninstall drivers and reinstall the drivers, so I did this as well (with most current drivers from the AMD site, version 10.9) and still I could not get into the CCC. As I was reading more forums, they were saying the 10.8 version mainly has this problem. So what I did was I downloaded 10.7 (did not install yet) and uninstalled the new 10.9. When I went to reboot the cpu after the uninstall of 10.9 there was no display on my HDTV.

I figured I just need to go back to my LCD which was still hooked up to my cpu. No display there as well. I tried dvi and vga hook ups from the monitor to both graphic cards but nothing worked to get me a display. I also tried my girlfriends monitor, which only has vga, to both graphics card and still nothing worked. So at this point I have NO display. After about an hour of trying different combinations of cords, monitors, plugs, tv's etc.,

I RANDOMLY somehow got a display with my girlfriends monitor vga to the 5600 card (I think). I had to hold the vga cord a certain way on attached to the monitor in order for the display to work. So since I had a display, I quickly installed 10.7. After installation, it did not prompt me to reboot (which I thought was weird) so I just went to properties and tried to change the resolution to the max 1600x something, to see how it looks. The screen went blank and the display never reappeared. Now I basically have NO DISPLAY again.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.10 - NVidia Driver 260.19.16 Are Not Latest

Question:
1. Do I uninstall nouvea and nv drivers (still installed)
2. Do I uninstall the current nvidia driver, then do a manual install of the latest driver from nvidia?

Ubuntu :: No Display On Screen After Upgrading Nvidia Drivers?

Sep 26, 2010

Recently I upgrade to the latest Nvidia driver for Linux. I checked that it was compatible with my Ubuntu 10.04 x64 system and my geforce gt 220 graphics card. I decided to go with the newest beta ver 260.1904. Installation went well, better actually than other times I tried to install the newest driver from their site. After installation was finished I restarted and let my system load up. As soon as it got past the ubuntu logo, the screen just went blank as if there was no signal.

I determined that everything but the display was working. When I pressed ctrl-alt-F1 the numlock light turned off (this usually happens) and was still toggle-able. When I went through the other x-servers (ctrl-alt-(F2-F6)) the light went out but could be turned off and on by hitting numlock. When booting in from recovery mode, the screen displayed up to the point where it would show recovery options with no noticeable error showing before the screen turned off. This is what worries me the most.I don't think it is my Xorg.conf because I replaced with a backup and still have the same problem.Does anyone have any ideas about why this is happening or how I can at least see the terminal. As a side note, its definitely not the card because the card worked fine before, works in windows and live cds, and I tried with an older nvidia card and had the same problem.

Ubuntu :: Display Driver Warning When Upgrading To 10.04 LTS?

Oct 16, 2010

planning to upgrade to the next LTS version i.e. 10.04. Have already applied all the updates and got the system up-to-date prior to upgrading. But when the upgrade starts I get the following message: Upgrading may reduce desktop effects and performance in games and other graphically intensive programs. This computer is currently using the AMD 'fglrx' graphics driver. No version of this driver is available that works with your hardware in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Do you want to continue ?Obviously, I clicked on NO and got out. What gives ? How come an upgrade is supposed to DEGRADE performance ? What kind of upgrade is that ? Also what is the implication for me ? Will I have to happy with 8.04 forever ?The machine in question is a Toshiba Satellite A100. I use GIMP quite a bit on it, so problems with graphics intensive applications is kind of worrying. What am I supposed to do ?? Upgrade anyway or stick with 8.04 ?

Fedora :: Nvidia's Latest Driver Freezes System

Jun 26, 2011

Lately (F14 and F15), Nvidia's drivers have been making my system freeze unexpectedly when running X. The only work around I have is reverting to an older driver (173.14.30). Although no freezes occur when using the older one, I need the latest one to run a few games sometimes. The odd thing is that when running these games within Wine while having the latest driver installed prevents the system from its usual freeze. I'd just like to solve this problem so I don't have to consistently revert back and forth from the two. I have a Nvidia Geforce 8800m gts and I am running F15 x86_64.

Slackware :: Completely Uninstall Nvidia-driver And Reinstall Default?

Apr 12, 2011

I use slackware 13.1-current on desktop with 4gb ram, nvidia geforce 210, and AMD cpu.
I have problem with my X starting using 40-50 MB of RAM and after some hours suddenly rises up to 400-500 MB. I have tried KDE ( with and without desktop effects ), LXDE, 3 different nvidia drivers ( the one made from the slackbuilds ) but no luck.
I decided at last to use the default slackware's driver. I uninstalled the nvidia driver and do startx, but it says code...

I have no idea about GPU and drivers, it was a mistake to install a driver for my nvidia just to have desktop effects. I just want to bring the things back as at the beginning of the systems installation and the default drivers.
Do you have any idea how to do it?

Ubuntu :: Upgrading The NVidia Driver At The Text Console?

Nov 13, 2010

using Ubuntu 10.10 amd64, my older NVidia card suffered a hardware failure last week, and so I replaced it with an NVidia GTS 450.

As the driver that was previously in use was nvidia-173, at the next boot with the new card the X server didn't start. I got to the text console, where the /var/log/Xorg.0.log had the message that the GPU/chipset is unknown to the driver. (well, ok )

Some web searches revealed that the chipset GF106 of the GTS 450 is only supported by the NVidia 260.19.12 driver, which is not in the Ubuntu stock repositories, so I followed the instructions at http://halvar.at/blog/?p=258 to install the latest driver from the PPA repository:

sudo aptitude install nvidia-current
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude full-upgrade

In short, although all of the above worked fine, the problem is that even after a reboot, the system still uses the nvidia-173 driver (according to Xorg.0.log, and starting X still fails).

Before I tried the above, I also tried

sudo aptitude install nvidia-current

alone, in order to get the latest driver that is in the stock repositories, but the result is the same in both cases.

What do I have to do in order to activate the nvidia-current driver (either stock or from the ppa above) instead of nvidia-173??

I tried to modify the proper blacklist file in /etc/modprobe.d/... (sorry if the file names are slightly wrong - I'm typing all this from the top of my head, as the affected Ubuntu system has no graphics, and thus no graphical browser etc. ), but then there is the error:

"Error: API mismatch: the NVidia kernel module has version 260.19.12, but this NVidia driver component has version 173.14.28 ..."

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Using The NVidia Proprietary Binary Driver (latest Version) And Searching The Forums?

Jan 27, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on an old small form factor PC with an AMD Sempron 2400, 1GB RAM, and an nVidia 5200 graphics card 128MB. OK, so a low-spec machine (but that's the great thing about Linux right? Don't need high-end h/w) but it works just fine, except that it can't play full HD (1920x1080) MPEG-4 video. Very jerky and lots of dropped frames. Same in both Movie Player and VLC.

I can't afford to increase the RAM and as it's a SFF I can't just swap the mobo and CPU for something faster so I'm wondering whether getting a higher spec graphics card would make any difference?I'm using the nVidia proprietary binary driver (latest version) and searching the forums I found a post where someone said that the nVidia driver needs at least a 512MB card for HD video.A colleague has a higher spec nVidia card (7600 IIRC) that he'll sell me, but before I spend any money, is this likely to improve things? How much does the graphics card affect performance, or is it simply a case of the machine overall just isn't high enough spec?

Fedora :: Unable To Activate Nvidia-173xx Driver After Upgrading To 14?

Dec 4, 2010

I was running Fedora 13 on my old computer with a nvidia Geforce FX 5200 graphics card using the nvidia-173xx driver from fusion. After upgrading to Fedora 14 (the first day of its release) the X server wasn't working anymore, the screen just froze up after the progress bar. With Alt+F4 I "moved" to text mode and gave the startx command, but I got the fatal error message that there was no usable configuration detected. I deleted the xorg.conf file and afterwards I was able to start X again. I use the nouveau driver now, but it doesn't nearly work as good as the nvidia-173xx driver. I have it installed, but when I try to activate it (by running nvidia-xconfig as root) the X server doesn't work again after restart, and I have to do the same thing all over again.

Ubuntu :: Getting NVIDIA Driver To Display Correctly

Mar 31, 2011

I have a problem with getting the picture to display properly on my HDTV. Using the regular driver (whichever that is) the picture displays flawlessly, but when I'm using the NVIDIA driver it displays really weird. URL...As you can see the top and the right of the picture is missing, and there is a large black bar to the left of it.Since it only does this with the NVIDIA driver I guess the driver is at fault here. The graphics card is a 8400GS and I'm running Xubuntu 10.10. The HDTV has a native resolution of 1366x768, and I've connected to it using HDMI.

I have tried messing around with overscan compensation in nvidia-settings, but it didn't help much. What can I do to fix this?

I don't really know any other way to upgrade other than following the links in update manager

ps forgot to say my cd coping sometimes messes up, don't know if it's software or hardware so was looking for methods to avoid downloading onto cds then upgrading from that! but will have to try this if no other way

Debian :: Installing Latest Nvidia Driver On Debian Squeeze ?

I installed Debian Squeeze with no issues. I went to install latest Nvidia driver as done previously with Lenny. Used instructions that worked on lenny from "the trooper" [url]

Downloaded th latest driver for my GeForce 7300 GS vidio card, driver package NVIDIA-Linux-x86-260.19.12.run

Used "method # 2 as described in HOW TO,as it worked perfectly in the past on Lenny. Only syntax I changed was instead of gdm I typed gdm3 as it appears that is the new name for gnome in Squeeze.

Did as folows:

Now the trouble showed up, Unfortunatly I can only go off my memory. A question was asked stating that something did not match, it needed a 3 and the driver had a 4 version or somethng of this sort. then it asked if I new what I was doing (and I lied) and selected yes. And whammo, it didn't work. (This question was asked when i did in Lenny and it is working perfectly still on that system). I now can not boot to GUI, I notice when system boots it starts in "S" mode although I select normal boot from grub2.

Not too bad if I got to reinstall as little is on the system. I just want to know what I am missing on the instalation deal or should I be going about this difrently with Squeeze.
