How do I check that I have the latest drivers installed for everything in my laptop? I'm the kind of person that has that nagging feeling in the back of my head telling me that everything isn't installed perfectly and I need to install my drivers properly (or at least ask).

View 7 Replies View RelatedIf I go to the website and download the ISO file is it the exact same one that was released in April or will it contain the latest patches (e.g. security fixes, etc) that have been release since then? If it doesn't I suppose I'll have to download the entire ISO file, install the OS, and then have another couple hundred MB to download which is not what I'd prefer.
View 2 Replies View RelatedA month ago, my HP Mini 1035NR, with a Windows XP system died. Since then, it won't boot into Windows. I tried installing Ubuntu via a bootable USB with no luck. I have finally been able to create a working bootable USB running the Gnome version of Open Suse 11.3.
Aside from not picking up my ethernet connection to the Internet, my bigger issue is I can't install Open Suse from the USB. I get a message when I try to install that there may not be enough memory and it hangs at the section where you choose your time zone. I would like to install the latest version of Open Suse with KDE. Is there anything else I can do?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI attempted to install the latest version of Digikam, v1.6, by connecting the Factory repository , then an upgrade via YAST. It automagically included upgrade of certain kde4 packages to v2.5.80.
System ran OK for a while, then I got a Plasma Desktop Shell crash notice and now cannot restart X. I can boot to level 3. I upgraded all the kde components to 2.5.80, but that did not help.
Has anyone successfully done this? Was there a hidden secret to success?
If all else fails, am I correct that

I want to install latest version from DVD onto my second harddrive. I tried it myself yesterday but ended up with a bootloader I didn't want, and some alterations on my windows 7 disk. It took me a while to restore the windows bootloader and I don't want to do it again. how to proceed to install a fresh copy on opensuse/kde on my second harddrive without it touching my first (I can select bootdevice from bios function). Both are currently formatted as NTFS and the second (target) drive is empty.

Is this the latest version. i don't know how old 11.4 is, but there weren't a great deal of updates. have added a few repos like packman etc.
Kept /home as the same and what a difference that made. i used to do a fresh install every time, it saved just about all my settings!!! just needed a few more programs and stuff but nothing major.
Really quick, clean install. just need to delete my old root partition for the old 11.3 system.
Would also just like to know are there many differences between 11.3 and 11.4?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just found new mesa-dri drivers in the updates-testing repo, installed all of them, uninstalled kmod-nvidia, and it just worked with my geforce 9500GT. For me, this is a huge step forward, the only thing still giving problems is the DVI signal, so I'm stuck in VGA. Even then, I was able to get a better resolution with the DVI signal using this testing drivers than with the nvidia ones (I tried several links suggested by DBelton in the nvidia-installation thread for fixing the DVI issue, to no avail).

I did the latest update on the opensuse 11.4 other day and since then my USB drive is not mounting. initially I thought its gone because my son dropped on the floor. But then when I plugged it to Windows 7 machine it mounted then I plugged it into another Ubuntu 10.10 machine it mounted so I figured out the there is some issue in the latest update. There's solution for that in latest alsa source but I prefer to install it from repositories, I don't want to get my system dirty with make installs. Is there a way to get alsa packages version 1.0.24 as a package? It is safe and clean to install them from alsa page sources?

Not taking any credit as it's just piecing together stuff found on the net.
Of course this is for my specific hardware and system so YMMV:
- Palit Sonic GT 240 card
- Lucid 10.04.1 64-bit
- Intel DG33FB board and E7200 CPU
- LG monitor L194WT at 1440x900 res
Reason for choosing the latest NVidia drivers instead of the ones available from the System > Administration > Hardware Drivers option is that the latest ones contain specific fixes for my card, that are not available in the others.
Prerequisites:
All of the following is based on a freshly installed 64-bit Lucid 10.04.1 system. Some actions may need modification if you have already been tinkering with Nvidia drivers.
1. Backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file if any. The default clean install of 64-bit Lucid 10.04.1 doesn't create this file so unless you have generated and modified the xorg.conf file for your specific needs, skip this.
2. Install the following packages

3. Remove the following packages using Synaptic's 'Completely Remove' option
- nvidia-173-modaliases
- nvidia-96-modaliases

I'm running 10.10LTS at present, I upgraded via the Upgrade Manager last night, Firefox 3.4 and D-bus stuff if I remember correctly. The system then gave the "restart now or later" buttons and I hit the "now" one. My system, an AMD 3800+ dual core job in an MSI mobo then shut down and, er... died. hitting the momentory action power switch gives an ocasional short noise but I have no power/fans or anything. It's a 480 Watt PSU with green leds and stuff I don't really need but the price was good, so I'm not convinced that it's dead... yet.
Is it possible for an upgrade to stuff the power-up circuitry? Maybe power management?
My next step is to swap the PSU to eliminate this as the "faulty" item. It leaves the Mobo, screwed CMOS and possibly the switch cabling/connector but it's all a bit suspicious. I'm basicially a hardware guy so that's the path I'm following. Unless the upgrade's written to somewhere it shouldn't?
I haven't had time to investigate further as I was dragged away shouting and screaming to a prior engagement by "she who must be obeyed".
