Ubuntu Multimedia :: Latest VLC (1.1.4) For Karmic?
Sep 19, 2010
I'm still running 9.10 (Karmic) on my main box and I'm trying to find a newer version of VLC. But almost all the recent blog posts re VLC 1.1.4 point to PPAs that only support Lucid and/or Maverick. The version of VLC in the Ubuntu depositories is 1.0.2 which is not only old but has a security leak; the VLC homepage warns against using it!
I suspect the problem here is that VLC is in the middle of rolling-out hardware acceleration and there's a bunch of different versions of it now (with and without the new VA-API enabled ffmpeg). So it's a moving target. But surely there's a better alternative for Karmic users than just 1.0.2?The best I've been able to come up with is the 'Nvidia Cutting Edge Multimedia' PPA which has VLC 1.1.0ppa:nvidia-vdpau/cutting-edge-multimedia

My system is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6 with Radeon 5770. The system was rock solid and everything working fine until the latest update I applied 30 minutes ago. The system is stuck on the little circle icon before the login screen.
I'm not able to ssh or telnet to the machine to check the log files. I edited my grub.conf a while back and I don't seem to be able to call up the recovery kernel. I can read up on the grub options.

If I go to the website and download the ISO file is it the exact same one that was released in April or will it contain the latest patches (e.g. security fixes, etc) that have been release since then? If it doesn't I suppose I'll have to download the entire ISO file, install the OS, and then have another couple hundred MB to download which is not what I'd prefer.

[URL]. I now have both monitor working and noticed my drivers are not current. I have the older ones installed. The 260.19.06 one. I installed via the suggested restricted driver utility in ubuntu 10.10. I don't have full use of the graphics and would like to install the latest driver.
Question:
1. Do I uninstall nouvea and nv drivers (still installed)
2. Do I uninstall the current nvidia driver, then do a manual install of the latest driver from nvidia?

I'm running ubuntu 10.04 on one computer, 10.10 on another two and kubuntu 10.04 on a 4th computer.
I'd like to get the latest version of shotwell installed on each of those computers. That way I can share libraries among the computers and keep my pictures in sync with tags and events.
How would I go about doing that other than upgrading all the computers to 10.10. Is this something ubuntu can do or is this a downside of ubuntu?

I have essentially been raised on Windows so I have no idea how to get DVI to work in Ubuntu. I have a Ubuntu/Vista desktop with an ATI Radeon X1350 graphics card. I can get picture from DVI when I boot into my Vista partition (the computer originally came with Vista and I have a Zune which will not work with Ubuntu ). But the moment I try to use DVI on Ubuntu: I have no picture. The ATI Radeon X1350 Pro is using the open source radeon driver. I know this from the System Testing diagnostic I ran when I finished setting up Ubuntu, the log file mentioned a line: Kernel module: radeon, underneath the section about my graphics card. That is about the limit of my Linux skills for right now, so any thoughts? If you need more information about my system I can comb through that log file which is still saved in my Fire Fox history.

From time to time, system booted with no sound and I had to restart system to have it on again. Now I have no sound all the time and no idea where lies the problem. I would like to ask for help in making a diagnose of what could be the cause that there is no sound in my system. There is no error message while booting system. No explicit sound driver. Sound isn't muted. Sound works when using Ubuntu Live.

Update manager got me to install some updates, including Linux headers. Now I have no sound. It cannot find my on board sound chipset and it's even taken away Alsamixer (no such file or directory) where I went to see if anything had become muted.I'm running 10.04 64 bit and I can't even find out how to get the grub loading screen. When I used to dual boot with Windows I could choose the previous Linux headers, now I can't even do that.

Yesterday, NVIDIA released a new set of drivers. For ubuntu 10.10, I downloaded 270.41.06. I havent been able to set it up on my fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10.
I have tried the following methods:
1. First changed the settings for updates to accept proposed updates. This is also suggested at [url]
Then installed the additional driver proposed by Ubuntu.
On restart, no login-screen. (Xserver fails to come up!)
2.Edited the repos by adding ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates. Unfortunately 270.41.06 is not the latest driver available there - 270.41.03 is the current version. On adding this repo the driver is searched successfully by synaptic. Installing nvidia-current brings up the driver version to 270.41.03 without any issues.
Nvidia X Server Setting prompts to run the nvidia-xconfig. On doing so a new conf file is created.
On restart, the Ubuntu splash screen is not displayed. Again Xserver fails to start!
3. Finally, I tried installing the .run file provided on Nvidia's website. First, I dropped to a root shell. Then cd'ed to the location where .run file was saved. On running the .run file, the installer asks you to change the run-level to 3. On doing so by telinit 3, the driver starts installing. As soon as I accepted the terms and proceeded to the next screen, a warning was displayed saying the pre-install script had failed!
But the driver installation does proceed to completion.
Even this method failed. The Xserver still does not start. No splash screen.
Currently I am running the system by restarting the Xserver in failsafex mode.

After i upgraded to karmic i experienced that the sound of spotify was at times strange. When i started a new song there was some strange plucking sounds, can most be understood as the sound a old LP-player makes when there is dust on the record. Not much but more than enough that I can hear it and wish it wasn't there. After some time of playing the songs sometimes was totally distorted by "disturbance" and it became impossible to even hear that there was a song there. Like when you are out of reception of a radio channel.
I did some research and upgraded to the wine1.2 with "custom" pulsaudio drivers. Then the total distortion was gone, but the, always present, plocking sound still was there. I have tested adjusting PCM volume, have some volume on mono, upgrading to newer pulsaudio drivers. The same problem is when ever my dear computer i producing sound. Spotify, firefox, rythmbox and mplayer. I can't see any answers after spending some time on google. I hoped i could fix this without deleting and removing pulsaudio.

I've been using windows xp (I play chess in the chessbase server) and Ubuntu in dual boot for quite a long time with no problems. My onboard sound worked perfectly in both OS. Then I decide to buy a SB Audigy PCI sound card. It works great in Ubuntu, but there was no sounds in windows. After doing a lot of research, I read that a clean install could solve the problem. I reinstalled windows xp and the sound drivers of the sound card and alas! the sound card worked.
Then I restored grub to access Ubuntu and when I reboot to windows...I got no sounds again. So, my conclusion is that in some way the Ubuntu installation affects the sound card when working in windows. I may return this sound card. The sound card is:
Creative Labs SB0570L4 Sound Blaster Audigy SE Sound Card
I'm running windows xp 64 bit and ubuntu 9.10 64 bit.

I spent over an hour today and over an hour last night googling and trying everything and so far no success. I found many threads with oddly similar complaints, but their solutions haven't worked for me.Last week I upgraded my system, basically a complete overhaul (in the old case). The new system is based on an ASUS MB which comes with VIA VT1708B audio onboard. I installed the latest 32-bit Linux Mint on it. The case's front audio jack doesn't work, the rear audio works but is too quiet.
Things I have tried that have not worked:Different combinations of settings in the basic sound preferences dialog, the GNOME ALSA mixer, and the PulseAudio volume control (I've probably played around with these so much that I've tried every combination)

Installed pitivi. It takes 20 minutes to put a 3-minute clip on the timeline and the sound is totally messed up. Installed lives, it loads the clip but insists there is no audio plus the black on dark gray menus are almost unreadable. Installed kdenlive, it loads the clip but playback produces a short squawk then crash, and I gather I'd have to risk destroying my sound by uninstalling pulseaudio. Someone suggested OpenShot.
Followed the instructions there:
Installed Open Movie Editor, it won't even read the clip. Now, Movie Player handles that clip (a VOB file from a DVD I had made from a miniDVB tape) perfectly as long as I don't touch the time slidebar, so I would imagine if there were a usable video editor out there something would work.

Does anyone know of any way to get this thing to work on Karmic? Just to be able to watch TV, not even to record? I can't seem to get it to recognize it. lsusb just shows:
Code: Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0438:b003 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. but it doesn't show up in dev/video0 or anything like that, and I don't know of a program which will play it. I don't really have the money to go out and buy another tv tuner, so I really would like to get this one to work, or else I'm going to have to switch to windows

The latest version of Spotify incorporates a social networking part, which allows you to connect with your friends to share playlists etc. However, accessing this feature using Ubuntu and running Spotify with Wine isn't the easiest thing to do. Regular Spotify works well, but I cannot login to my Facebook account. Apparantly, this is due to that part of Spotify using IE7 components.
I couldn't get past the diaglogue box asking me to enter usr/pass, but after some googling I got IE7 support for Wine running using Winetricks. Now I can log in, but I get stuck at another point: the window where I'm to accept that Spotify accesses my private information. I click OK but then it just stands still, loading, and nothing happens. I know the new version just came out, how to fix it? Perhaps adding some other stuff with Winetricks beside IE7 support?

I've been running Maverick 64bit fine on my Dell M1330 laptop until a couple of days ago. After the latest updates (I guess to kernel 2.6.35-24-generic), sound stopped working properly. The sound indicator applet tells me that the sound system is not responding. The login sound doesn't play anymore.
On the other hand Rhythmbox plays and I can hear the music. I can adjust Rhythmbox volume but not the global volume (as neither the sound indicator applet nor the multimedia volume keys on my laptop work).
Code:
$alsamixer
it works flawless. Here is what I get if I try to run pulseaudio from the terminal
Code:
$ pulseaudio

It should be easy, but Adobe's page for Linux downloads has a choice of about five different downloads. I tried one and it gave me some files I don't know what to do with. I do already have Flash on my computer, which I got from the Ubuntu software centre, and it works for most things but some things tell me I need a newer version.
