View 3 RepliesI'm currently running F11 x86 and want to update to F13 x64, so a new drive and fresh install and copy all the config & data from old drive. and Prey, a lot....I'll be installing F13 x64 later this weekend, But F14 will be out in a few months then F15 and so on.I've tried the upgrade option (x86 to x86 in the past) on the install dvd but it doesn't work and I wind up with a broken install and have to do a fresh install after saving most of the import data and config files, but I usually missing something and get hosed. Part of the problem could be using Nvidia drivers for video and several applications installed from several different repos.I've never been able to safely uninstall the Nvidia driver and still have a working system, let alone upgrade to a newer version and still get a visible desktop.
I was thinking that couldn't I just edit a yum file and point it to a new repository and have it upgrade the machine with out all the fuss?I followed a procedure once or twice on how to do a inplace upgrade, but that didn't work either. I'd like to keep the machine running the latest bits, but with all the pain and suffering I need a simpler method to do it. Is there a procedure or process I can run or follow to keep Fedora in sync with the latest release with out having to continuously swap disks, reinstall and copy critical data files?
I'm on the Slackware Security mailing list and I check the Slackware Security Advisory page daily because the mailing list, for me at least, is unreliable. After Firefox nagged me about a security update, I went to one of the FTP mirrors to check for an update and the Firefox update was there, but it still hasn't shown up on the official Slackware Security update page.

View 6 Replies View Relatedhow to find the latest modified directory. I know that the command 'ls -rtl' gives the latest modified file/directory at the end. But my specific requirement is: If I create two directories named dir1, dir2 in the same order. so now my latest modified directory is "dir2". Now inside each directories, I created a file. Now in the last, I modify the file in "dir1". So overall, the content of dir1 got modified recently. If I use the command 'ls -rtl', this will still show dir2 as latest, as it is created recently. But I want the directory in which any internal content at any sub-hierarchy modified recently. so with what linux command I'll get this latest modified directory (dir1)?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to write a script. I have the basic form working... but I would like to add some advanced features. I have a list of .zip files that have a version number in the filename (i.e. sudoku-134.zip, sudoku-176.zip, sudoku-203.zip, etc). I would like to have a script that will find the latest version of each game, and unzip it. I want the next to latest version left untouched. But anything older, I would like the unzipped folder deleted (But leave the .zip file)
Here's what I have so far:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
cd /var/www/vhosts/server.com/httpsdocs/games/$1
for file in `ls *.zip`; do
if [ -d ${file%.*} ]; then
echo
else
mkdir ${file%.*}
cd ${file%.*}
unzip ../$file > /dev/null
cd ..
echo 'date' $file >> /var/www/vhosts/games4roku.com/private/$1.log
fi
done
I can call the script with "game-unzip public" to unzip all the public games.
Here's my files:
Code:
sudoku-134.zip
sudoku-134/
sudoku-176.zip
sudoku-176/
When I add the latest version, sudoku-203.zip, I want it to unzip it to ./sudoku-203/ and rm -rf sudoku-134
I'm wondering if there's a way to verify the integrity of installed packages/programs against official repos. I did an update via synaptic about a week ago and it asked me to upgrade several packages such as login, su, passwd, groupadd, useradd, lastlog, and several others. Right away I was concerned about this, but I figured it's via synaptic, must be safe. Well now it's a week later and I'm trying to find some "last updated" info for these packages, changlelogs, whatever, to verify that they were indeed official releases/updates, and I'm coming up empty.
Is there something I can do to verify that these files and my system are still intact?
If I go to the website and download the ISO file is it the exact same one that was released in April or will it contain the latest patches (e.g. security fixes, etc) that have been release since then? If it doesn't I suppose I'll have to download the entire ISO file, install the OS, and then have another couple hundred MB to download which is not what I'd prefer.

"what ever". then a few lines about the tab function. then "sh: grub" i'm a newbe to the code lang of ubuntu. i don't know what i need to type to get it to load the ubuntu operation system??? or to fix the grub selection screen, or why the installs since .17 don't work.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Thinkpad X40. I've installed Ubuntu 10.4b2 Netbook Remix on it. I have two issues with it:1. If I boot to kernel 2.6.32-21, the machine locks up hard when X attempts to start. The keyboard becomes totally locked (ctrl-alt-f1and the screen is blank. 2.6.32-20 works fine. (thanks to IRC for telling me how to get to GRUB when it's set to auto-boot.)2. I had 10.4 alpha3 on it originally, and the 3d netbook launcher was dramatically faster than the currently updated version of it. Related to #1: how can I set GRUB to automatically boot to the older kernel? Where should I be looking in logs to see if there's something I can report effectively?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using xubuntu 9.10 and yesterday (6/7 2010) there were 5 important updates which required restarting. So I restarted my computer and found out that I can no longer log in. I got to the login screen where I wrote write my password and it started the logging in but then the screen went black and I came back to the log in screen just like nothing had happened.
I can log in in safe mode but not in the normal GUI boot up. How do I fix this?(sorry for my rusty English btw)
i did some looking online and read that chrome/chromium will tell you if an update is available by showing a small orange dot by the settings wrench. i have never seen one. but it seems that (as far as i was able to figure out) i do have the latest version (8.0.552). i do remember seeing chromium having been updated through the Ubuntu update manger, but all i remember seeing are security fixes, not updates (although i might not have seen them). i also read that chrome/chromium has a 6 week release cycle. Its been awhile since ive seen chromium updated (unless update manger is doing it and not telling me). is there a newer version of chromium? or am i just too observant/impatient?
View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.10 on both PC's.
One is updated to kernel 2.6.35.25, but the other one does not give me any updates for kernels..so it still has 2.6.35.24. I don't understand this.
I updated (I have already been using 10.10 for some time now....) my desktop last night before I went to bed and I installed the updates that I was prompted about yesterday. Well today it says all the updates were installed and asks me to restart - i do.
1st thing I notice is my username/login was different - it used to just be <name>; and now it is <name>-x2512xt5125532 (not exactly, but it was changed..) My password is still the same and logged in fine.
I open up firefox and i notice I have no internet connection (I am wired..) - The back of my desktop light is on (so it definitely has connection) but ubuntu says it is disconnected. I tried deleting the current wired-setting and still not working.
I am using VoIP so I unplugged it from the back of my phone, and directly wired it to my computer - still no internet. I know I have a connection because my phones are working - just not THIS desktop. I have another desktop with 10.10 and the same updates (except the problematic one is 32bit, and the other is 64bit).
I opened UbuntuTweak to find a new repository, Gnome3, available.
I selected it, and tried to install it. I was told I had a broken package, and to fix it first.
I closed Tweak, and opened Synaptic, and clicked fix broken packages, then select all updates. It updated.
I went to restart...and now I can't log in. It brings up the login menu, but the "session" tab at the bottom is grayed out.
If I attempt to login, it seems to accept it, then goes black, and right back to the login screen.
I cannot use ubuntu. Somehow, I managed to get a working terminal from the recovery mode.
I wanted, still do, to change my username. hihihi100 is my old username, the new one is dexter: I changed it in the user and groups section, and moved everything from the /home/hihihi100 folder to the home/dexter folder. In the terminal I can see all the files, none is lost, all are owned by dexter of the group dexter hihihi100 folder is gone
Now the bug, or more precisely, where I realised I had f*kked up:
My machine loads normally, untill I reach the login screen, where I am prompted to choose a username and a password: after doing so my 11.04 will only show 3 different messages:
NOTICE THAT hihihi100 is gone, all the information of that folder is now in dexter (/home/dexter)
Code: could not update ICEauthority file /home/hihihi100/.ICEauthority
There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)
Nautilus could not create the following required folders /home/hihihi100/Desktop, /home/hihihi100/.nautilus
I dont understand why my machine wants to create folders inside hihihi100, a folder that does not exist anymore
I'm trying to figure out how to use the copy of karmic I downloaded as a repository source. Synaptic has an option to use the install disk as a repository - I'd like to do the same with the copy I have on disk. I've tried to figure out how to search for this, and can't seem to find any relevant information. In the "I'm getting ambitious" department, I'd also like to keep the iso updated with the latest stuff from both Ubuntu sources and the third party repositories I've added, and delete the packages I've removed from my install.
View 1 Replies View RelatedTrying to get the thunderbird localization working I briefly checked thunderbird 3, to see if it had the same issue. Now, the problem is, I accidentally installed new versions of Firefox 3.5 and XULrunner. If I remove them, then many other packets get removes due to dependencies. Same if I try to force version. If I simply remove the repos, then synaptic reports them as broken. Is there anything I can do to solve this? How stable are the updated versions? How often do they get updated?
View 3 Replies View RelatedVery new to Ubuntu, but I was able to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 with no problems. New to forum and couldnt find any help in other posts. Like everyone, I was itching to try the newest and greatest. Tried updating last week but had the "openoffice..." bug and wouldn't install. Tried last night and everything went fine, until I restarted the system. Now it won't complete the boot. It show the GRUB, and some other startups, but them blank screen. 10 min later nothing. Tried it 3 more times. I think I am stuck, right? New install? This is what I am thinking of doing- 1. boot from old cd to get my files out. 2. fresh install of 9.10 and be patient for the offical release. Is there anything else I could do?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just updated to 10.04 from the previous version and I'm encountering two main problems: First, on boot, after grub, I get the following message: Quote:"Disk drive for /hdba/sda6 is not ready yet or not present" "Continue to wait, or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery" It won't go past that (I've waited 30 min) If I press S then I get tis other message but it skips after a few seconds:
Quote: "Disk drive for /hdba/sda7 is not ready yet or not present" "Continue to wait, or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery" If I press S then I have an ALMOST working system. You see: I have an external USB hard drive, shared between XP and Ubuntu with all my files in it, and it won't mount. It's a simpletech and it was working just before the update and it loads, mounts and unmounts perfectly on windows and on another laptop I've got running crunchbang!. I can see the disk in "Media" but says I have not enough permissions to see its contents.

Not sure where to ask but can we get teamspeak 3 in the repo ? Version 2 is not used anymore and the people over at [URL].. said it was ok to add it to our repo as long as we do not modify it.
