While i am trying to starting ypxfrd service it gives OK message
But when i am checking its status it showing stopped
Is this service is neccessary to work NIS?
I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use
startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits.When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
Is the Server or Desktop version of Ubuntu a better choice for a home file (and possibly a media) server?
To explain a little, I currently have a WinXP Pro pc that provides file storage for the users in our home (spouse, kids, self). On this pc I have a windows program ACRONIS running to perform automatic backup of every ones stuff. This has saved me many hours of headaches when someone has a HDD or PC failure. Everyone in the household directs all of their downloading activities to a download partition where I have an anti-virus & anti-malware program monitoring all new entries. This too seems to have been a good decision over the years. I'm trying to sort out which version of Ubuntu will be the most logical entry point.
I expect the questions I am seeking insight for are the normal getting started stuff. Using several different search criteria, I did not hit upon existing threads for the topic If there is a more appropriate forum / sub-forum, please let me know and I will take this question (thread) there.
Currently have multiple small DNS-323 NAS-in-a-box that need to be replaced with a single storage server.
Since the setting is for an advanced home server (2-3 simultaneous clients max) that will hold movies and application/game ISO's, I was originally going to go with a simple RAID6 on freenas. As I learned about silent data corruption, and with a max of 3 simultaneous users, I don't see a need for a hardware raid processor. So I gathered that software RAIDZ (RAIDZ2) based on ZFS or BTRFS that prevent silent data corruption would be a better match (please correct me if I am wrong).
NEEDS: The needs (in addition to prevention of silent data corruption) are basically online capacity expansion (OCE), and 2+TB volumes (64bit LBA); with a preference for the ability to spin down idle drives. I'm going to make the assumption that any solution I go with will allow me to read/monitor actual SMART drive data.
STUMBLING BLOCK(S):
1. Would someone validate the (perhaps mistaken) assumption that since BTRFS is integrated into the latest Linux kernel, it is mature enough for NAS candidacy.
2. Please validate: Forward-compatibility of BTRFS has been stated (no need to reformat with subsequent BTRFS updates).
3. Am I missing any NAS software (open-source or otherwise) that would meet these requirements and provide a nice pretty graphical interface?
4. What software solution would you recommend? (btrfs on xxxxx? zfs-fuse? linux+xfs (+mdadm)? ..?)
5. What are my next steps?
Accumulated hardware for project:
SERVER: 3u chassis with 16hot swap trays. Tyan S5360G2NR i7520 mainboard. Single Intel 2.8Ghz CPU (dual-capable). 4GB ECC RAM (do i need more?). Dual hot-swappable 550W psu. CD-ROM
DRIVES: Eight 1.5Tb SATA drives, plus an additional four that are in-use in the DNS323 that I will migrate over using OCE. Four 750 SATA drives that are also in-use and can be migrated over via OCE. One 16Gb SATA SSD, intended for Boot OS and logs.
INTERFACE CARDS: Two 3Ware Escalade 9500S-8 8Port SATA RAID (PCI-X, 64bit) [can change these to something else].
UPS: 1500VA
At our university server, I patched together a script (lets call it connect.py) that kind of glues together a series of calls to different other programs (the first one is in Python2.X, the second is a binary so I use os.system('/path/to/program input.pot') to start it, and the last is in Python3.X). It kind of seems to work well now when working under my user account, where the script has the permissions to call the programs, because I installed them.Now, when I want to start the connect script by pressing a submit button in an HTML form, naturally I start running into trouble. Now its no longer my user who is calling, but the server (Apache) with very limited rights. In the progress of writing the connect.py script, I had to do quite some environment adjustment so the various Python modules could be imported.
What is the easiest way to get the script started from an HTML form? I guess it would not be good practice to start extending the PATH variables of Apache, would it?
Evidently I need to run Jack Control in combination with Qsynth to play my midi keyboard. That was ok for about a week or so, then Jack developed a problem. This was solved the first time by me unticking the Realtime box in Jack setup, but that has not worked this time. Must I rely on Jack just to have my midi keyboard sound?
The errors messages I receive are:

For some reasons I need to configure ubuntu in such way that it would turn off the computer if X-server or GDM hasn't started (but user is able to log in). By the way, what are the reasons for such situation besides errors with video drivers?
I was told that I should write a script, but I have no idea how to write scripts and where I should place it (I suppose in init.d with some parameters).
I am having some problems with rsync,I put the rsync command in a shell script, and I am calling the shell from a 3rd server, but it stops midway through.s anyone else experienced these problems?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am re setting up a server of mine running red hat enterprise Linux server 6 and I had all of this working befor but for some reason I had troubles getting sasl to work and now when I login my smtp server I get an error stating that my username or password is incorrect though I am sure I am entering both correctly. Would anyone know what could be happening? I have been spending days on the web looking for the solution and only went from sasl not working when started as a service to this. For some reason I can't use Pam with saslauthd and had to use shadow instead of which from what I hear I get to use better methods of secure authentication with smtp

After testing it in the lab, I tried to install a new cluster and received the following error: cman not started: Cannot start, cluster name is too long or other CCS error /usr/sbin/cman_tool: aisexec daemon didn't start I've checked the internet for that error, but nothing. I decided to to take the example from cluster.conf man, which looks like that :

And still I get the same error. I can find my servers both from DNS (FQDN and short name) and they also appear in /etc/hosts.
I have a dns server started with 2 NIC Cards in it. The bios sees both cards but they both dont show in ifconfig. is there a way to activate the second card?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to ensure an app starts on boot up but after MySQL has been started. I can't however locate where MySQL is being started. If I do a chkconfig, it says MySQL is off, yet I can readily access my databases with phpmyadmin.If I look at my boot log, I can see it says MySQL Server is started, right after Apache2 is started.In my rc5.d directory, I only see a symbolic link for Apache2 but nothing for MySQL. The startup script for MySQL appears in /etc/init.d.rc.local has got nothing in it but comments. So it appears to me like it's being run on startup, but not as a service. But I have next to no knowledge of Linux so don't put too much belief in that.I would have originally installed MySQL via apt-get.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu and I came across Conky.I was fascinated with this software and installed it using terminal codes. At first it rand with the default config file loaded. then i PC shutdown due to a power failure. now conky does not start and after searching over the net i found out that my conky config file is missing. I pasted the conky config fiel yet to no avail.
It gives me this error while running it in Terminal

My problem is that my fan will keep running quite quickly once started. It will keep running till reboot independently of CPU usage and temperature. To check the temperature I installed lm-sensors. Output of temperature related commands and kernel version are below. Shouldnt they all give the temperature? My machine is a Toshiba Satellite pro L300. Eg. at the moment my fan is running quite quickly although CPU usage is 3-4% and the temperature according to lm-sensors is approximately 40-45 degrees Celcius.

I'm working from the set of Debian instructions following this post. I have saved the correct image file to my USB flash drive per the instructions for Intel x86. I've got a Celeron HP, 512 RAM, 1.3 Ghz processor, XP Home SP3. After saving file to USB flash drive, I extract file and a single boot file then appears next to zip folder. I tried extracting by command: # zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sdX and that does not work; not recognized or something (I'm going from memory). Command line is C:/User/Docs and Settings or such, no option for G: drive in Command line, if that helps. I am no Command line pro. Got there by Accessories/ Command line. (Is this the same thing as Start/Run/msconfig, dnsflush etc?)So since I can't extract with Command line it follows that the "mount" instructions don't work for me either: mount /dev/sdX /mnt. So I just re-booted with USB drive in, and pressed Del and Esc alternately like a madman for about 5 boots, but does not open in BIOS; instead Windows opens normally.
I know my way around a little PHP/MySQL/Javascript libraries, but if the Linux world is this difficult at the outset, I can only imagine the nightmare I'm in for if I succeed in getting my system converted--which is what I would want to do--not set up partitions, etc. There is an all-in-one file hd-media/boot.img.gz which contains all the installer files (including the kernel) as well as syslinux and its configuration file.Note that, although convenient, this method does have one major disadvantage: the logical size of the device will be limited to 256 MB, even if the capacity of the USB stick is larger. You will need to repartition the USB stick and create new file systems to get its full capacity back if you ever want to use it for some different purpose. A second disadvantage is that you cannot copy a full CD image onto the USB stick, but only the smaller businesscard or netinst CD images.After that, mount the USB memory stick (mount /dev/sdX /mnt), which will now have a FAT filesystem on it, and copy a Debian netinst or businesscard ISO image to it. gdm seems to be missing from system-config-services.Cant find in in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d either.Does anyone now how it gets started ?

Ctrl-Alt -F1 doesn't give me a terminal screen nor does Ctrl-Alt-Backspace restart X I must turn off the computer and turn it on again to reboot. I don't remember having this problem with Fedora 11, but I recently moved to Fedora 12. I am using the kernel

Google provides many references going back to April for this string, mostly on Ubuntu related sites. I do have an 128 MB ATI Radeon X300 graphics card but it is over four years old, and I didn't have this problem with earlier versions of Fedora. Also, the google references seem to refer to hibernation, which I am not doing, at least not intentionally. Finally, I see that Xorg configuration has changed significantly since I last checked. (I can't find xorg.conf.) Can anyone refer me to a relatively succinct description of how it now works?

After installing opensuse 11.3 and its updates, firefox is no longer working. When I type "firefox" in the command line, it returns

there's a little app called F.Lux that sets your screen temperature based on the time of day. The Linux version is a little spartan with just a console interface but it works perfectly well. The question I have is where can I invoke it so that it starts up after X has started?

As you see, another bash shell started.
I looked at the tcsh file:

It is not a link (but csh is). I don't understand why this is happening.
I've got a Macbook Air and a verified 9.10 liveCD in the external superdrive. I can successfully boot to the CD, but when I choose "try ubuntu without installing", all I get is a blinking cursor in the upper-left of the screen forever. Any idea why it won't start? CD works fine on my Dell, that's why I say it's verified.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI switched to Linux but I was, and still am a gamer, and I have been trying to get some of my favorites to run on Linux as well as find Linux native games. While this hasn't been hard, I have run into a sort of Brick wall. I'll get games to start, but there will be no sound at all. The game runs fine though. When I try to close the game, it crashes/freezes.
This has puzzled me because some games that display this bug now did not previously, and at first this only occurred on one game. Now it occurs on all games. I've checked around, found a few similar bugs, but the closest people seem to get to fixing it is "just uninstall pulseaudio and use something else". It only happens in games, music and other sound works fine.
As for specs, I must say I'm fairly ignorant of some things, but getting better, here is what I do know.

the problem I'm having is after I rebooted my machine and tried to mount my array it forget's to add 1 drive to the array

I've a laptop running 10.04 LTS 64 bit. (Upgraded from 9.04 64bit). Some times (1 over 3) certain processes are not started at boot time : bluetooth, vboxdrv, hddtemp, cups.... (I may miss some other ones). If I use sudo and the service command I can start them by hand and if I reboot they usually start automatically. I've tried to start the laptop without the "quiet splash" options to the kernel command line but I did not see any error messages nor anything more explaining this behavior. So I wonder where I can find where the glitch is, how I can fix it, and what is the startup sequence of an Ubuntu machine (there is no /etc/inittab, and the /etc/rcN behavior does not seem to be standard)

I then started a command and detached the screen.I then logged in remotely through ssh thinking I could resume the screen but when I try "screen -r", it says not screens to resume. I see the screen process still running and when I do go back to the server directly (no ssh) I can resume the screen and things are running just fine.Anyone know how to resume a screen remotely that wasn't started remotely?

I have never touched Linux. Always been intrigued, but never toyed around with it until now. So please bear with me. I normally run Windows 7 Pro but would like to dual boot Ubuntu. I have installed Ubuntu 11.4 with Wubi 4-5 times, and it starts out fine, and then stops working on me. I tried recreating it to see what was causing the problem, but with no avail. The problem it has is as soon as I pick Ubuntu from the GRUB it boots to some sort of bootup (non GUI) and gets to a point where it says something about a system audit, and never loads from there. The only way to fix it is to uninstall Ubuntu (through Add/Remove Programs) and reinstall.
I am not in a place where I can partition drives or anything like that. I do not care so much about using Wubi, but either that, or help booting from a USB would work fine for my needs.
I am trying to install the latest version of skype available in SBo repository (2.1.81.1) and although it is marked as not tested and supported , it was built successfully and installed. When i try to start it via console, there is an error:
