Jan 25, 2010Alright I've got 2 hard drives in my computer and one of them has no data on it so I have to mount it to open it and once I do this it asks for a password to mount it.

Ubuntu :: Transferring Hard Drive To A New Computer / GRUB Giving An Error Message?
Nov 16, 2010Today, I finished assembling my dream computer. I can boot it into the BIOS, and I checked that everything was working correctly through there. Anyway, I attempted to transfer the hard drive from this computer to that one. This computer is a Dell (blech) Optiplex GX280 with an Intel processor and integrated graphics. The new one has an AMD Phenom II processor with an ATI card and an ASRock motherboard (drastically different machines, I know...) When I try to boot, GRUB gives me an error message that says something like:

blah whatever cannot find /dev/disk/by-uuid/372de761-9577-48be-ba19-c6b2890cb229
Did I do something wrong installing the hard drive? Or is this a problem that is going to happen no matter how hard I try to make it not happen? If the second is true, will it help if I wipe the disk and reinstall Ubuntu on the new computer?
P.S. I know similar threads about transferring hard disks have been posted, but no thread has mentioned this error.
Hardware :: Dropped Hard Drive - Started Giving Out An Intermittent Clearly Audible Rattle
Jun 23, 2009I bought a new hard drive recently and I managed to drop it. Put it into the computer, used it for a day, all went fine. Now today, it has started giving out an intermittent, clearly audible rattle that will last for a few seconds at most; there doesn't appear to be much of a pattern to it, sometimes the drive keeps quiet for an hour, then it does it twice within a minute or five. FWIW, the drive was still in its plastic box when it hit the floor so that must have softened the blow. There is no visible damage to the drive although the plastic box was dented on one corner. Still, what do you reckon are the odds that it will die any time soon?

Apr 21, 2010I am getting annoyed that every time I try to extract, move, or delete a folder I get:
"Unable to move due to file permission"
"Unable to delete due to file permission"
"Unable to extract due to file permission"
I really have a hard time trying to use, and understand the chmod folder stuff in terminal. So I asked a friend and he helped me create a desktop program or icon where I would just drop the folder I wanted to use on it, and permission wouldn't be needed anymore.
Well, I dropped a a folder on it one day and the folder didn't open, so I tried another folder and eventually the thing never worked again so I removed it.
Is it possible to allow the entire hard drive or OS (Ubuntu 9.10) to give me permission to all the folders? I only installed the [password to log] in thing, so I wouldn't have to worry about people in my house using my computer without consent. If this isn't possible can someone post a method to create the launcher or icon?
Note: I made a root desktop thing (Guy holding what looks to be an ID card) but not even that will allow me to delete the folder in the file system. I the entire game that the folder is called is removed already, so there is no point me leaving this folder alone.
Ubuntu :: Hard Drive Permission From Live CD?
Jun 24, 2010For some reason, Ubuntu 10.4 LTS cannot boot normally, so I have reverted to a live CD, no concern, I can just reinstall, what I am concerned with is the fact that I get my music. I load up the live CD, and I am able to access my hard drive, but I as I found my music folder, I cannot copy and past and/or move ANY folders into a flash drive. It says I do not have permission.

Dec 13, 2010I've encountered a very frustrating problem. I have both my desktop and my laptop computer installed with Ubuntu 10.10 recently. And I use a external hard drive formatted in EXT3 as a backup. I created the EXT3 partition on my external hard drive using my laptop, but I cannot access those files using my desktop. What's going on? If one day I lost my laptop, does it mean even if I have backup, I can never access without my laptop??? How can I solve this problem?

I'm getting Permission denied even though I'm putting sudo in front of the command but, instead of asking me for a pass word it just says Permission denied "then" it askes for a pass. I enter the pass and it just takes me to the

prompt. I enter the command a second time and it says Permission denied again.

For the first few days my external hard drive was working fine, but then eventually it wouldn't let me copy/move/delete stuff to and from it. Oct 26, 2010I have an external hard drive that has all of my Apple Powerbook G4 files on it. I plugged in my "Journal Extended" external hard drive into my new HP laptop with Ubuntu 10.10 on it.
All of my files are on the hard drive still, however lots of them have a little X on the folders and when I try to open them it tells me I don't have permission? How can I force the permission for everything on my external? It's my own files and I can't even access them lol.

I made sure I had set a+x rights on the file, tried executing it as root but the permission error stayed.When I copy that same file to my Desktop folder I can perfectly execute it.When it's located on the other hard drive I can't. I tried several command line scripts and they all work when I execute them from my OS hard drive,but not from another hard drive.

May 8, 2011I hopelessly tried to find answers for my problems but I could not find a single person complaining about this one: I am using a Lenovo G550 laptop (which has an NVIDIA graphics card) accompanied by a samsung screen using TwinView configuration. I have some special effects enabled and they all seem to work fine.
My main problem is: When I double click on the top panel in a window and maximize its size (it can be an application, a directory window or a terminal, anything..) on Natty, I sometimes can reduce its size back by double clicking on the Natty panel and sometimes this does not work! In times this does not work (reducing by double clicking again), I have to use the rectangle button in the panel in order to reduce it back. In times it works, I can simply double click on Natty top panel or left click on the panel, hold it, and pull it down.
What the hell can be the reason? I somehow observed a strange relationship between this behaviour and thunderbird but I am not 100% sure. Can anyone offer some help?
And another irrelevant question:
Is there a way to make the mail/pidgin indicator that turns green when a new message/mail recieved jump or move or do some action? Because when working full screen it is really hard to notice that thing going green. Previously on 10.10 if i'm not mistaken you could make the pidgin indicator jump high and low as a notifier. Is there a way in 11.04 to achieve this?

It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

May 1, 2010Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

I am running Ubuntu server with 3 hard drives. I have Webmin installed. So far, I have the three laptops being able to connect to samba and accessing /home/insert_user_here. All laptop users have access to my /media/data2 (photographs, videos). That's all good. At first, I couldn't get other users but laptop 3 to access /media/sdb1, but I fixed that by changing permission to 755 so I guess everyone can access this. Atm, I want to only allow laptop #3 to connect to /media/sdd1 (be able to read/write/etc.) while laptop 1 and 2 can't even see the files. Also, laptop 1 and 2 can't seem to read and write through file share.

When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.
