OpenSUSE Install :: GRUB Error 17 When Extra Hard Drive Not Attached

I recently installed openSUSE 11.4 on another hard disk of my 11.3 machine. I have another drive in my computer that is used solely for extra storage. Before installing 11.4 I could boot my computer with or without the drive installed, but now if I try to boot without it I get Error 17 from GRUB. I don't understand this as there is nothing on that drive that should be needed by boot and I can find nothing in the GRUB configuration that references the drive.I am getting ready to clear the whole system for a fresh install anyways, but it would be nice to know for future knowledge what is causing it.
It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.
Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.
I can not use disks
I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)
I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.
I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.
I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.
When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)
Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.
I've been searching for awhile and can't find any threads that can solve my problem. From other threads, however, I have noticed that I should probably include my menu.lst, listed below

I bought a new hard drive. I thought it would be clever and SAFE to install Ubuntu on the Hard Drive so that would not interfere with the internal hard drive on my laptop. It worked fine until I disconnected the hard drive. I got the "Grub Error 21" when I installed. I know how to get around it, unfortunately, I have to lug around this hard drive whenever my computer sleeps or restarts. I would like to be able to restart and boot into Windows without my hard drive connected. Is this possible?
I'm trying to figure out how to perform a minimal install to a USB attached hard drive. A full install works just fine, when I start the install from the LiveCD desktop, all the USB drives are visible and can be installed to. In the minimal install, the requisite kernel modules for USB storage don't seem to be loaded, therefore, my USB hard drive is not visible and cannot be mounted, partitioned, or installed to.
The reason behind this is I'm trying to build an XBMC install on a USB hard drive and want only the minimum backend OS that's necessary as some of the Ubuntu desktop software causes issues with some of the XBMC software. I've posted on the XBMC boards about this, but my questions have gone completely unanswered,

When I first installed the openSUSE, I had to extract whole iso to sda4, because there was some kind of with CD (scratched or something like that), Now I want to add this part to grub, so that when I want to reinstall it, it will be ready for me. I tried doing this with yast, but could't figure out whole thing.

With the generous help from caf4926 and please_try_again, i was able to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 with suse's grub legacy.Now I have another problem that i'd need help on, I added a new IDE hard drive for storage and it became sda and the original sda with 3 OSes changed to sdb. I'm using GRUB to dial boot ubuntu 10.04 and windows 7. Usually it works well. But if I attach my 2T hard drive to the my computer, the booting process will froze after choosing the system to boot. There's nothing I can do but cut off the power.
I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto an external hard drive connected by USB to my laptop:
sdd partition Windoze still resides on the box's internal hard drive: sda2 partition
I also partitioned the internal hard drive so that I have a repository where my documents etc can be accessed by either linux or windoze: sda3 partition (FAT32) I'm assuming that Grub is on the external drive somewhere - as is probably now the Windoze MBR. I'd like to be able to give my wife the ability to start the box (and boot into Windoze) when the external drive is not attached (so that she doesn't have to take the latter with her when she needs to be mobile with the computer). What do I need to do to move grub and the MBR back onto the laptop's internal drive? Or, I suppose: What do I need to do to obtain the functionality that I'm looking for? I have a 320 GB HDD I use for data apart from the regular HDD for the OS. Of course when you go to format it, it's actually 298GB. So I made a 248 GB partition, ext4 for ubuntu data, and a 50GB partition for Windows.
It shows as 248.01 GiB in size in GParted, with 217.27 GiB used. 30.75GiB unused.
When I go to Computer, right click on the partition, click Properties, it says Total capacity 244.1 GB, 18.3 GB free, 225.8 GB Used.
So:
1) Why does GParted show it as 248GB and the Properties as 244 GB?
2) More importantly: Why does Gparted show I've used 217.27 GBs, while the Properties show I've used 225.8 GB? What's going on there?
I have Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid installed on my new laptop and I'm trying to get my backup script up and running again. I had a script that would connect using smbmount with my normal user account and then mirror my home folder to the external network attached hard drive with rsync. It seems that rsync needs to be run as user account, not root, to work properly.Some of the setup info for getting this running in Kubuntu Karmic was from this article:
However, smbmnt does not exist in *buntu 10.04. Is there any other way to connect NAS drives as non-root user that is relatively secure? I spent all day yesterday struggling with this and still haven't found a solution.
I have added a 1.0 Tb USB HDD and would like to install games, extra software, etc. on it when using apt-get or Synaptic but I can not find any info on doing so.
i want to install windows 7 and ubuntu studio on the same hard drive(dual boot) but that is not a problem for me.since ill be using both i want a third partition to store all music images etc from both the OS's.i think the 3rd partition should be fat32 so that both windows and ubuntu can access it.but windows needs a system reserved partition nowadays and ubuntu a swap.so that makes a total of four partitions.So how can i make my fat32 partition?
I have Ubuntu/Vista dual boot desktop with Single HDD (200GB) that i cloned to an external USB HDD (320GB) using clonezilla. My intention is to use the external HDD as a backup to up running in case my 3 year old desktop HDD fails. To make sure the clone is good to use if need, i connected external HDD to USB port and tried boot from it but got "Error 18". I tried to Google got some infoDid a fdisk -lu and got the following.

In terms of hard disk failure when using raid 1 setup,how important is to use one of the following (example) partition setups not to run in "GRUB hard disk error" if one of the disks fails.Which method is prefered? To make "boot" partition or not?

Today, I finished assembling my dream computer. I can boot it into the BIOS, and I checked that everything was working correctly through there. Anyway, I attempted to transfer the hard drive from this computer to that one. This computer is a Dell (blech) Optiplex GX280 with an Intel processor and integrated graphics. The new one has an AMD Phenom II processor with an ATI card and an ASRock motherboard (drastically different machines, I know...) When I try to boot, GRUB gives me an error message that says something like:
Code: blah whatever cannot find /dev/disk/by-uuid/372de761-9577-48be-ba19-c6b2890cb229 Did I do something wrong installing the hard drive? Or is this a problem that is going to happen no matter how hard I try to make it not happen? If the second is true, will it help if I wipe the disk and reinstall Ubuntu on the new computer?
P.S. I know similar threads about transferring hard disks have been posted, but no thread has mentioned this error.
I just tried to install F13. I can't install grub to any drive other than that which F13 gets installed on. When I click on the drop-down menu, only /dev/sdd is available.
i am multi booting with another operating system that doesn't boot on a pc and requires a special bootloader to make it work, but before i can install that bootloader which will overwrite grub on the mbr. how do i install grub on the hard drive so that the special bootloader will exist and will recognize grub and boot Ubuntu from the hard drive instead of the mbr can this be done with the ubuntu live cd. remember i am installing grub on the hard drive, not the mbr and it's grub2
I've just installed a second hard drive in my laptop with windows 7 on one drive and Ubuntu on the other. I selected the side-by-side install in the Ubuntu install and let Ubuntu do the rest. Unfortunately Grub isn't seeing the windows install even after reconfiguring grub. However, the windows 7 drive is visible in Ubuntu and all the windows files are there intact.
Does anyone know how I can make grub see Windows 7 so I can boot into it?
Company laptop HP Compaq 6710b, NTFS on hd0, Win7 installed. BIOS allows boot from USB drive, so wanted to use Ubuntu with no influence on laptop (no disconnecting internal drive, no dual boot, etc). As my proficiency with Linux improves slowly, I've been trying to find the answers for myself, but in this situation I must admit I find myself rather stumped. I have a perfectly nicely working Fedora 12 install on an 80GB SATA drive, and when it hit an error and wouldn't boot last week (easily fixed with fsck from the initial command line) I panicked and ordered a new 250 GB drive. It got here and I might as well use it, I thought to myself, so I went about trying to figure out how to move my install without having to reset all of my settings, programs and so on. I didn't want to mess with dd because I'm not so so clear on resizing my partitions once the copy is done (if someone thinks this is a better idea I'm open to suggestions.) After some poking around I found this set of instructions which I attempted to follow to the letter, but hit some snags. I understand this thread I am referring to may be a bit outdated, which is why (I assume) I hit a bump here

To summarize, I partitioned and mounted my new drive using fdfisk and the instructions provided above, then used rsync to copy over all of the files, so as far as I know the new drive is ready to go, just not yet bootable. Opening the Grub.conf file in Kwrite (as root) returns a blank page. What do I do now?
As a side note, you can see that I am not too squeamish about the terminal, so I would prefer to find a "command line only" solution to this relatively simple (?) procedure.
I'm getting a funny error after trying to add a new internal hard drive to my computer. After adding the new drive to the "Slave" slot GRUB will not load properly and gives me the following error Grub Loading, Please Wait Error 17 I've checked in my BIOS and the "Master" drive is still the one where grub is loaded. When I unplug the new drive the problem disappears and I can load Grub normally. I've searched the threads, but couldn't find a similar problem, or a problem that could be applied to mine. I've also tried loading the live CD, but my internal CD drive is broken, and the external one I have doesn't seem to recognized during boot time.
I've been running Debian Lenny kernel 2.6.26 w/ desktop kde3.5 on my laptop for a while, and im going to take a trip in which i will be unable to take wmy laptop with me. However, where i am going contains computers and i figured if i could install debian onto my external harddrive, i could just boot onto the other computers. I install it using the debianlenny-i386 dvd image. However whenever I try to boot it from a computer. Grub returns

However the commands have faded from memory and i am now unable to find that site again. Could anyone offer insight on how to fix this "grub error 21" or how to activate it. I would like to increase the storage space available to users. I am planning on adding another 120gb hdd and want it available to users in their home space. Is that possible? Also, what happens if you change hardware? If I changed my cd drive to a dvd-rw will suse 11.2 simply find the change and update the system (like in windows)
I want to dual boot openSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I already have Windows 7 installed but I have encountered multiple issues in the past with trying to make dual boots. Usually when I install Linux, GRUB decides it wants to go into world domination mode, and "breaks" my Windows installation. I have reason to believe this is because the distros I use come with legacy GRUB, (v0.97) and for some odd reason it lacks commands such as "update-grub" etc. This means I cannot add Windows 7 to the boot menu without going into extreme complications, which have NEVER, I repeat NEVER succeeded. When I boot the Windows drive directly, I get some error about GRUB not finding the device, and it puts me into a grub rescue command line. Now I am no expert in this field at all, but wouldn't that mean that GRUB wrote itself to the MBR of...oh I don't know, ALL of my hard drives? I really want to install openSUSE 11.2, but from bad experience I am really put off as I know that it ships with legacy GRUB v0.97.I am also running Fedora 13 at the moment, I have quite an experimental dual boot running..been trying to get GRUB 2 for hours now, it is definitely there but no commands work, "upgrade-grub-from-legacy" and "update-grub" return with command not found. I've heard this is just a bug but can anybody confirm that there will definitely be a way for me to "fix" my windows installation after it gets "broken" by GRUB?Second idea, unplug my windows hard drive while openSUSE installs?
I did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted.
I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive.
However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message im given means I think it could be trying to fchk it.
Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd ?
