Ubuntu :: Compiz No Longer Working?
Mar 18, 2010I have been using some of the compiz effects now for just over a week with no problems. but yesterday they stopped working for what seems to be no reason. I have the recommended nVidia driver installed, here is my graphics card from lspci:

I right clicked on my desktop, and went to 'Change Destop background', then visual effects. This has been set to None. I cannot change this to Normal or extra, as I get an error saying

May 19, 2010I have a 'Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000'. In addition to the regular left/right click and scroll wheel it has an extra button on the side. In previous versions of Ubuntu I was able to remap this button to act as double-click using 'xbindkeys'. However, in Lucid this no longer seems to work. X seems to know about all of the buttons on the mouse since 'xinput' lists the device as having 13 buttons and labels button 8 as 'Button Side'. However, 'xev' does not show a button event when I press the button. Instead it shows:

May 26, 2010I've recently installed the package xscreensaver-gl-extra, and noticed not one of the screensavers on that package works - all I get is a blank screen on all of them. However, I remember those screensavers working under Jaunty on exactly the same hardware (didn't test them on Karmic).How can I make them work again?

However, with the new kernel, it appears my wired network adapter is no more working! Lucky you still can boot up in 2.6.32-22 then

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Gnomad 2 No Longer Working After Upgrade?
May 10, 2010After upgrading to Lucid Lynx I can't get Gnomad2 to work with my Creative Zen X-Fi. I used to get it to work by running Gnomad2 as a super user, but now the program quits itself when trying to get the songs from the device claiming a segmentation fault.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Firewire On IMac G3 No Longer Working?
Aug 21, 2010I'm not sure if I have a hardware or OS problem. Firewire on my old G3 iMac has stopped working. Previously I've used a scanner and an external hard drive (Iomega eGo) without problems while running Lucid. Now neither works with the iMac, though they both work when connected to a PC. Both the PC and the iMac are running the latest versions of Lucid.
I can't tell when the problem began since I don't use the scanner or hard drive that often. I did try booting using the live 10.04 CD for PowerPC and had no joy with either device.The LCD on the hard drive lights when connected to the firewire port so power is coming through. The scanner has its own power supply.Checking with lsmod I see that both the modules ieee1394 and ohci1394 are loaded.I suspect it's a problem with the hardware. Does any one have an idea how I can go about verifying that? I'd hate to bin an old faithful without first checking everything out.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Is No Longer Working After Update
Dec 5, 2010I am running 10.10 on a 21.5 inch imac. I just ran some updates and rebooted, turned on rhythmbox to play some tunes and realized there is no sound. Tried ....., no yield. Tried a different user account still no sound. SO I rebooted into osx and I have sound. Its therefore a software issue for sure. I plugged in headphones and changed to the appropriate output in the settings manager, sound came out, but out of phase. What going on here? any ideas would be awesome.

Dec 24, 2010ok so last night i had my computer set up and working with both vista and ubuntu dual boot so when i started my computer i had a choice between ubuntu or vista went back and forth a few times to make sure everythign worked fine and it did. so this morning i update my vista basic to 7 home premium well now when i start my computer i no longer have a choice and it boots directly into 7. can someone help me fix this i really liked being able to have both on on hdd
i know that ubuntu is still there becouse my hdd reads 220 free of 250 the hdd is 320 i set the other half for ubuntu

Apr 9, 2011A couple days after an update to Ubuntu 10.10's networking stuff I was unable to connect to my wireless network that had a password. Now, I can connect to a different connection that doesn't have a password but when I try to go to mine it doesn't work.

And yes I do know that the password is correct as I am connecting right now on Win7.
Ubuntu :: Ctrl+Esc No Longer Working After Natty Upgrade
May 1, 2011Long story short, my HTPC has a keyboard, but no mouse.I'd gotten pretty good at working the machine with no mouse, but after my upgrade to Natty Narwhal today, the Ctrl+Esc shortcut to open the Applications window no longer works. Alt+F2 only works when another application is already open.I can get to the Applications menu using Ctrl+Alt+NumLock and mouse emulation, but it's pretty painful.Have I messed something up here? My install went a little messy, but I've managed to get everything else working and I doubt a keyboard control would be a bad install/upgrade.

I have tried to remove all banshee related checks in software sources of the ubuntu software center. Then I just removed the lines all together. I still cannot open update manger. Get the same error. Fedora Servers :: Yum Is No Longer Working In 3
Apr 23, 2009I am running a Fedora 3 that I had installed from a slightly outdated disk. and I have been making updates by using YUM. But I have a policy of only updating just what is needed and leaving the rest alone. This was fine until some time (I think is was) last year, when our friends at fedora had discontinued support for Fedora 3 and then unwisely deleted all the packages for fedora 3 and fedora 4 off there server. Now it has been a struggle just administer updates when application that I am adding become unhappy with the version that come off of the disk, and I end up with versions that are more current then I wanted. All I wanted is to have access to the packages that were left when the music stopped.
Hear is my current pediment. I now need to run PHP (something I never used until now) and version that came with the disk (ver 4.3.9) is too low for the scripts that I will be running. They need PHP 5. Now I know that were up to something like PHP 5.3.x. But I don't really need that. I am shore there is a version of PHP 5, like versions 5.1, that was available though YUM. If they only just left it there. At least Microsoft leaves all of there window 98 updates on there server for people to use, even though they don't support windows 98 any more.
The biggest reason I want to use YUM or even up2date for my installs and updates, is they minimized the risk of screwing something up.
Here is my question. Dos, anyone know where there is a mirror of fedora 3 updates that fedora used to have on there site?
I am hopping to be able to adjust the baseurl= line in the fedora.repo file to point it to this new mirror and make YUM work like NEW.
OpenSUSE :: 3D Effects No Longer Working
Sep 15, 2010I did an update to KDE 4.5 recently, and afterwards noticed that 3D effects were no longer enabled. When I try to enable them from desktop settings, I get a pop up in the panel that says another application is preventing compositing (or something like that).
I have the nvidia 256.53 drivers installed and 'glxinfo' says direct rendering is on. I'm also using X server 1.9, but compositing was working with the new X server before I did the update to 4.5.
Ubuntu Networking :: Samba No Longer Working - Caused By Update?
Mar 3, 2010I think an update or something has killed Samba on my Karmic box. it can see Windows shares OK, but it no longer appears on the Windows network.I have not changed my smb.conf for months, so something else has been modified.Looking in the logs I can see the following in "log.winbindd-idmap" after restarting Samba

Ubuntu :: Upgraded - Dual Boot To Vista No Longer Working
Apr 29, 2010I upgraded today to 10.04, everything went fine and was working fine. I went to boot back into Vista via grub2. I immediatly get the PXE-E61 Media Test Failure, check cable PXE-M0F Exiting PXE ROM
I first checked my boot order, and lan is very last. Also, through Ubuntu I can view everything on the hard drive so it is not that. I think it may have to do with during the update process, it asked about grub2 update preferences and asked about different drives and such (I am not exactly sure what it was called). I didn't select all of the choices, and I believe this may be the cause, as this was the only thing I had control of that I could have screwed up.

It looks like a Qt4 problem, I have installed Qt4 with all possible dependencies, re-installed vlc several times but no effect! cvlc as proposed doesn't react.
Ubuntu Security :: Server Hacked - Ethernet No Longer Working
Jun 19, 2010My server (Ubuntu 10.04 desktop) was hacked. I had my ethernet plugged in to an Intel 82557 Ethernet Pro card (Pulse) when my server was first attacked. After it was attacked I reinstalled the system but my ethernet card still would not work. Ubuntu recognized it, but it is continually disconnected and the little status lights on the card do not light up anymore.
So then I plugged the ethernet to the mother board itself. Well, my server was hacked again and now the ethernet on the motherboard does not work. Again, Ubuntu (after a reinstall) recognizes the hardware but nothing happens when I plug the etherent in. The motherboard is a BioStar P4M900 VIA chipset. I have a few of the system logs here [URL] which I saved right after the first attack.
Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Network No Longer Working On Mobile / What To Do?
Aug 19, 2010It still works fine if I boot into "good old" Windows. I must say I am SOOO disapointed with the Network Manager in Ubuntu which was great until 10.4 and has been crap ever since. I have had so many problems with my Vodafone USB and had to find an alternative method of getting it to work. Now the last straw is that my wireless LAN card is not getting recognised on startup so I have not connectivity when at home. (USb via Vodafone is no good in my area). I am typing this via an old Windows PC because my Ubuntu just does not work anymore. I have not installed anything new so what has happened - or how can I get it to work again.
I was completely sold on Ubuntu but am now considering reverting to Windows. It would be worth paying for an operating system that actually works, even if I have all the other hassles as well. A year ago Ubuntu was great - it all worked ! Not any more how can all that good work have gone down the pan - I can't understand how anyone could let all these nertwork problems occur - it isn't just me - read the threads - it's widespread.
Debian Hardware :: CD Drive No Longer Working
Oct 21, 2010I'm having an issue with my cd drive. It was working perfectly fine the last time I used it, a few weeks ago. It no longer spins up when I insert a cd it sounds like the laser keeps readjusting itself or something. The BIOS picks up the drive just fine, in the right place with the name.Nothing seems to have changed there. I think its a software issue and not a hardware one because I haven't touched the case or anything inside since I cleaned a month ago. I tried installing kvm and qemu a few weeks ago. However my hardware doesn't support it so I removed it. Could one of these programs have broken something? Is there a system log file this type of thing.

Aug 11, 2009I have been a happy Fedora user since late in the F9 release and now use F11 32 bit.Two days ago my 2wire modem/router took a dive. My ISP sent us a Motorola 3347-02 and since then my computer will not reach the internet. I have read everything I can and still haven't found the solution! Some things that I have tried: Disable network manager and do it manual, configure static IP, wipe system and reload, installed F11 on another computer.None of these have worked.Now I am booting from Ubuntu and have no issue but I can't stand Ubuntu.

I am also using gnome-NetworkManager. If I left-click on the NetworkManager icon down on the taskbar near the clock it shows "Wired Networks" with eth0 connected, and "Wireless Networks" is blank under the heading, last week I believe it said something like "device unavailable" or something like that.

I was curious about when the last time I was able to successfully use my wifi so I checked to see in NetworkManger and it just so happend to be that I was on a business trip in Atlanta on a different network then am usually connected to. Don't know if that has to do with anything but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Also, I thought it may have something to do with assigning an IP address static-or-auto but I am not too familiar with NetworkManager to check that.
Networking :: Certain Websites No Longer Working Correctly?
Feb 24, 2011Starting today I cannot log into [URL] on Linux. Whenever I try to login, it just takes forever and then either Chrome or Firefox tell me that perhaps the site no longer exists. It works perfectly fine on Windows. Strangely it also does not work on my Roku box and is working sporadically on my PS3. I would think it was my ISP or my router if it wasn't working perfectly fine on Windows.
I AM NOT TRYING TO WATCH NETFLIX ON LINUX. I know that doesn't work. I'm just trying to update my queue. I'm having this problem both on Fedora and Ubuntu (latest stable releases on both). I know it's not just loading from cache on my Windows machine because I'm going to pages that I have never been to and it's working just fine. Now, I have not tried signing out and in because then I'll be up a creak. OK, I installed another browser on my Windows computer and I'm able to sign into Netflix just fine. So it's not a sign-in issue.
WHY DOES THIS WORK ON WINDOWS? It's the same browsers - Chrome and Firefox on Linux and Windows and the same network.
ALSO, flickr is not working correctly - I cannot make any comments in the discussions (but can on photos which is ajax-y).
update: also checked a Linux computer using Linux Mint that hasn't been turned on in 2 months. I know it was able to access Netflix back then. Nothing has been changed - not even updates. It also cannot access Netflix. Either taking forever to load [URL] or when trying to login.
via looking in Konqueror, I saw it's trying to go [URL] and that's what makes it so that I cannot connect to [URL] if it considers me to be signed in. And here's what Konqueror said:

Slackware :: Thunderbird Links No Longer Working
Dec 24, 2010So, approx 2 weeks ago, clicking on links in Thunderbird stopped working. There is no response in the browser whether it is open or not. I am able to paste the links to the browser just fine. Being congenitally lazy, I would rather just click them. I have upgraded to the latest version of Thunderbird and have the same issue. I have tried using Swiftfox, Firefox and Opera - all give the same non-response.
Am not getting any error messages, the links just do not open. Can't find any settings relevant to this issue.Any bright ideas out there?
CentOS 5 :: KMail And PGP No Longer Working After 5.3 Update?
May 3, 2009Have a problem to decrypt emails after I updated to 5.3. Didn't change anything to the pgp or Kpgp settings and Kmail says that it failed decryption with openpgp. As I don't know what to look for or what to check I am lost.. it encrypts outgoing messages just fine.
