Is there a GUI that will allow me to set a default file manager for Xubuntu? I would like to use the Nautilus File manager. Right now I access Nautilus from a launcher I have on my Panel. I would like to have the ability to switch file managers, set defaults etc...

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a file server running a cronjob to reset file permissions on a regular basis. I was thinking, I wonder if there is a way to do the chmod and chown command in a single command, as I always have to do both on the same folder, the way that you can do "chown root:users Uploads" instead of having to do two separate commands for chown and chgrp.
Then I got to thinking, are these commands even necessary? Every file copied or moved into these folders by any user needs to be something like "chmod 750" and "chgrp root:users", so rather than running a cronjob to do these modifications at regular intervals, there ought to be a way to set the folder permissions so that any files contained within will have these permissions.
The problem arises because users create documents, then a supervisor with elevated privileges can move those documents into a shared folder, however the permissions are wrong, they are user1:user1 for the owner and group and the other users can't read the file until a cronjob changes the group to be users. This has actually been acceptable, but certainly there is a better way to do this.

This will give 3 filefilters ('all files', 'sdf files' and 'xml files') for a fileopen dialog. Exactly as I want (in alphanumerical order), but XML is the default extension and I like SDF to be the default extension. Research has not revealed solutions; the setFileFilter method sets the primary filter. If I swap the sequence in the code, SDF becomes the default (as I want) but the sequence is wrong (All, XML, SDF).
I have tried to make my own buntu running LXDE as the desktop environment though it is running smoothly on an old laptop it has a certain problem.
I have installed PCMan File Manager as the default file manager for the LXDE and not Thunar or Dolphin, but, I have a problem with opening files from there. The default application set to open all file types is the Terminal.
What I currently do to open the file is right click and choose "Open with.." to open the file in the appropriate application. Is there a way to set the default applications?
I have Ubuntu 9.10 from minimal CD install then got LXDE and installed the following applications aside from the applications that came with LXDE:
-OpenOffice.org suite
-Mozilla Firefox
-Google Picasa
-Wine
-VLC Player
How can I change the default file manager in GNOME? I've got these notes but neither methods work:
GUI
Change under 'Session control' in 'Ubuntu Tweak'
Delete nautilus and type in pcmanfm or another file manager such as thunar
Apply
Quit ubuntu-tweak
Reboot

I have installed dolphin in ubuntu 9.04 but whenever I click on a folder it opens with nautilus file-manager. I found no option in the folder properties for making dolphin the default file-manager !

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set krusader as my default file manager. I have gone into System Settings > Default Applications > File Manager and changed Dolphin to Krusader.
When I plug in a flash card the Device Notifier pops up and I click on the device inserted. The choices I get are Digikam, Dolphin, and Do Nothing.
I click on "Dolphin" (hard coded it appears) and it looks like Krusader tries to start. I get the cursor with the bouncing krusader mini-icon and an entry in the panel, but then nothing happens. It all goes away and I'm left with a blank screen (wallpaper, actually).
I've chosen Krusader from the menu, so presumably the arguments to it are good. I have KDE 4.3.3 and krusader 2.0.0.
I recently decided to install xfce-desktop as a fallback alternative whenever Gnome 3 has problems. Now I have the Thunar file manager opening up by default even when logged into Gnome (for example when using Alt-F2 and typing in a folder name, or when plugging in an iPod.) I've searched around for days but can't find any place to set a default file manager. The Default Applications dialogue doesn't include file manager, only web browser, video etc.)

I have observer that in the newer distros they dont use xorg.conf anymore and have steered toward xrandr. My question is:
1 - If after an initial install you have no video and you know what hardware you have, how would you use xrandr to configure the machine to boot with the correct resolution and setting? 2 - I also read that you can still use the xorg.conf, would this still be the standard method of setup?

I have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. View 1 Replies View RelatedI do a lot of torrenting on my xubuntu box, and ever since my introduction to computers, I have become attracted to the command-line way of doing things. My default editor is vi, my default torrent programme is rtorrent, my default gopher client is lynx... you get the idea. My web browsing, and sometimes also my file browsing, however, is always in graphical mode.
As you know, downloading a torrent involves downloading a small file with the extension .torrent. When I clicked on this .torrent file, although I have rtorrent installed, Transmission showed up. Not to insult the Transmission guys, but compared to an ncurses-based torrent client, Transmission is just too bloated. Anyhow, I right-clicked on the file, Open With Other Application, etc.
Into the box that showed up, I typed /usr/bin/rtorrent (the path to my favourite torrent client), and clicked OK. I double-clicked on the torrent file again, and nothing. Transmission didn't show up, but neither did my terminal client. I'm sick of having to go to the Applications menu and firing up the Terminal to torrent a file. I'd like to have the Terminal open up with rtorrent as soon as I double click the file.
I customized the appearance of my Xubuntu and now I would like to go back to it's default theme. The problem is that I don't know how. I've switched to greybird but it seems that it's not enough.

I had formatted only the / partition and installed 10.04. I have copied users information from 9.04 to 10.04. I can log into newly installed 10.04 system. But the desktop menus and appearance is that of 9.04. I would like to change it to default 10.04 desktop menus and appearances. I have used command rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity and re logged into my system. But still the desktop menus and appearance didn't change. How can I restore 10.04 xubuntu default desktop menus and appearance settings?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed xubuntu-desktop on my Ubuntu 9.10 desktop, just to have the option of using xfce ( I did the same with Kubuntu - kde). I have noticed that the Xubuntu splash screen now comes up rather the the Ubuntu default splash screen.
I tried to use Start-Up Manager to changed back to Ubuntu but Xubuntu xsplash screen ( one with the fire flies ) still comes up. Is their any way to change this back to the Ubuntu Splash Screen without the Xubuntu screne coming up at all ??
I am using xubuntu and there are a few types of files on website that instead of downloading and saving and then opening with emacs, I would rather when the radio button choice comes up say open with emacs. I am using xubuntu with xfce, and there is no line for a command to be entered as some ubuntu editions have. In the choice of changing the opening program from mousepad to something else, it says search and allows to navigate to find a program, but I cant find emacs anywhere not in etc/ or elsewhere. So where is its executable to direct the program chooser to?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to configure GRUB to boot XP preferentially- my wife insists. Having looked up the GRUB manual I see that I can set this using the default command.
The problem is, when I go to my grub command line default is not a recognized command. If I hit TAB for a list of commands, it isn't there.
I think I'm using some 0.9x version of GRUB, since the partitions etc seem to be numbered starting at 0, not 1.
While I'm at it, I was just going to play around and figure this out, but: the menu interface lists five versions of Ubuntu (all those weird kernel variations) then XP. So would XP be default 1 or default 5?
I'd like to set Vim as my default text editor (so it opens when I click a file). How can I do this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI Just updated my 10.04 LTS system, which dual boots Windows XP. Prior to the update the default was to boot to XP, now it is to Memtest.
I tried to edit /etc/default/ grub and make the default be 14 instead of 12, which would be XP, but Ubuntu, (using gedit), refused to accept my change.
I don't have a problem scrolling around to pick XP, or the latest Linux kernel to boot, but my wife sure does. How can I make Ubuntu/Grub default to to XP ?
