I recently installed VLC Media Player and now wonder how I could make it my default media player in Ubuntu because every time I want to listen to a song, I have to right click and "Open With...VLC Media Player".
View 2 RepliesI am trying to set my default media player as MPlayer and selecting it with a right click in the menu, open with and then telling it to open with every time. It then opens it in MPlayer that time no problem but then next time I just double click on the file (or any file with same type) it just opens it with the original default player. I've tried using SMplayer as well as default and it does the same thing. I'm on Ubuntu 10.04.

View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing Ubuntu 11.04, Totem (the default media player) is not able to seek (read: to forward or go back in time) whenever the file is read from a mounted ISO archive.
Whenever I extract individual media files from such an archive, the seek bar at the bottom works as it should. Thus, it can be ascertained that it is not the media files that are the source of the problem, here.
why that is doing so? Sounds like a bug, or what?
How do change the default media player? I would like to use VLC as my default. running opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.4 64bit

View 3 Replies View Relatedi just installed ubuntu, latest version. i accepted the default media player. when i had windows installed, i was able to play videos at any level without any problems. the video player played very smooth whether it was in ..... or any other site. i took windows off, installed ubuntu, and now, the video is extremely choppy. the audio is fine, but the video is like it is playing 1 frame a second, instead of 30 frames a second. is there a better media player than the default? is there a setting i can adjust, like a buffer or something? i think the default is rhythmbox music player? for the video.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI'm using OpenSUSE-11.4+KDE and have not been able to access my Sansa Express drive. I can pull it up part way, but it acts as read only. I'm not sure what settings I may need to make in the Partitioner to fix this.If I boot into a LiveCD of LinuxMint10-KDE and plug it in it is instantly identified as a "Media Device," and I have access into the MTP section of it I believe.

Kernel 2.6.21.5, Slackware 12.0 When I click on some audio stream links in my web browser (Mozilla Firefox), the stream comes in a URL ending in .pls, usually listen.pls. As I want mplayer to play it and not the default player, I intend to make the first the default one. In Firefox (2.0.0.4) I can do Edit>Preferences>Content>File Types>Manage and change the actions associated with each file type. However, if the type is, say, PDF, I can can only change the action if a PDF file has anytime been downloaded. So, the same goes for a PLS file.

I've just finished installing the software on the box. I've made it a dual-boot but want to set the default to Windows XP Media Center so my grandson can work with it. I want to change the boot configuration file but the documentation show working with menu.lst file but I can't find it. How do I make the changes without blowing grub out of the water?

When i hit right click on a file and open with and set VLC as default it opens the vlc just that one time, not always.
I was just wondering why Ubuntu, with the direction they are going in, would not choose XBMC as the default media player rather then Rythmbox. Anyone have ideas or thoughts? I was wondering if it had to do with licensing issues of some sort or if there is no reason. Personally I think with a little work XBMC would fit in with Ubuntu much better. XBMC it is a Media Center that is very nice in my opinion.

Iam using opensuse 11.1. I want to know which is the best player that can be used in suse, which should support all codecs. I have tried totem player, xine, kaffeine, Noautun etc. But none of them is good. I have tried to install vlc player, but it shows a lot of dependencies too..it was not successful.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI changed the default player for mp3 to audacious, which works fine, just that every time I doubleclick a mp3 file, a second application button appears in my taskbar saying "opening [file]" which looks like the default player. this program will eventually time out and go away, but it's still annoying - any idea on how I would go about fixing this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an NTFS volume on my system which I regularly access from within Ubuntu 9.10, mostly to play the plethora of DVD images (*.iso files) stored there. I use VLC Media Player to watch the content. For some reason, VLC's file browser only shows a small subset of the files by default. I have to select "All Files" instead of "Media Files" to see all the *.iso's.
What's this about? Since they're all the same type of file, I don't understand why some would be viewed as "media files" but others not. If the files were on a Linux-type filesystem (ext3 etc.) I would guess it had something to do with permissions, but I'm not sure how file ownership & permissions apply to a mounted NTFS volume.
It happened after i installed easy-ocr from [url].
It reset my gnome settings and now totem/mplayer/vlc show black rectangle instead of video, sound is ok. mplayer doesn't even show any OSD activity
Tried reinstalling totem/mplayer/vlc/gstreamer/ubuntu-restricted-extras, tried changing video output in gstreamer-properties. Nothing helps.
Flashplugin shows videos from ..... ok
Big_buck_bunny in ogx streams ok though FF, but if i download it and play using totem same black rectangle instead of video

What I want to do is be able to store media (pics, audio, ripped dvds) on a central server and access the across the network with a media player in Ubuntu or Kubuntu that I can connect to the TV and entertainment system.
What media player to use and how I should set that up? I might use windows server for the shares just because I am used to it unless theres a better way. I have a pretty beefy server just waiting for media files.
I'm new to the Linux world and I have frankly had hard time using RhythmBox. It's not nearly as user-friendly as iTunes and it's not that I'm any great fan of iTunes! What is a good alternative to RhythmBox that will allow you to play music, download music, and install and play video material in a clean and easy way? I've heard that MPlayer is a decent option but I know there are others as well.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded my ubuntu dist from 9.10 to 10.04 via the Update Manager inside gnome. I spend a lot of my spare time lying in bed watching (legal) movies using VLC Media Player. I have never before the dist upgrade had any issues with this although since the upgrade I have found the VIDEO in the movie crashes usually around halfway through the movie although the audio remains fine and continues through to the end of the movie.

It seems your FFMPEG (libavcodec) installation lacks the following encoder: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3.
If you don't know how to fix this, ask for support from your distribution.
This is not an error inside VLC media player. Do not contact the VideoLAN project about this issue. After some searching around, I found a guide on setting up ffmpeg at [url] which I have followed. I am still getting the error.
Do I need to add any other codecs to make this work?
Unfortunately, being the fact that I'm a gamer; I need to dual boot with Windows 7. I'm after a nice music player with a similar GUI to Banshee or Rhythmbox in their minimalism. Something as Gnome looking as possible and very lightweight on recources.
