View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using xubuntu and there are a few types of files on website that instead of downloading and saving and then opening with emacs, I would rather when the radio button choice comes up say open with emacs. I am using xubuntu with xfce, and there is no line for a command to be entered as some ubuntu editions have. In the choice of changing the opening program from mousepad to something else, it says search and allows to navigate to find a program, but I cant find emacs anywhere not in etc/ or elsewhere. So where is its executable to direct the program chooser to?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using rhel6. Using File Browser Nautilus 2.28.4 I could easily locate any file I'm interested in by it name. I'd like to use this File Browser to locate the file name based on it content e.g. based on some word in the text file. It doesn't work for me that way ... My question: does Nautilus support the search of file based on it content or only based on the name of the file itself?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi need to make an file server.but I'm not gonna ask how because that's a piece of pie.The thing is i need to make an ubuntu/xubuntu based file server. For windows users. But not just a regular file server. A File Server with accounts. That when you try to access the file server in explorer you need to provide a username and password. And that you( as the administrator) manage the privileges for the server/folder/file. so with different permissions.
View 4 Replies View Relatedfind file-roller (aka 'Archive Manager') in xubuntu's Applications menu. I surely have it; it is the default application for opening archives, I can invoke it from the terminal but I can't just... run it from the Applications drop-down.I even tried the Application Finder with no luck using the keywords file-roller, archive, file, roller, .zip. .tar, etc. No luck. Can anyone else find it on their Applications dropdown menu? Or at least tell me that they can't find it either?I'm curious if I have some configuration glitch, or if this is a bug, or maybe there's just something in the water here.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently migrated from ubuntu 10.10 to xubuntu 10.10 on my Dell inspiron 1100. After many tries I "succeed" (with internet) in solving partially the issue related to the video chipset (Intel 82845G Graphics) by using a "vesa" driver in the xorg.conf. Some discussion here mentioned the possibility of deleting ASCI 8086:2562 from a blacklist in usr/bin/compiz but even with ghex editor I could not find any matching string. Hereafter my grub and xorg.conf for those who are interested. I have another issue now. How can I create an iso file of my installed xubuntu. I did download ubuntu 10.10 and created a CD but I migrated after to xubuntu (since most of the files were there) and it would be great to burn a CD of xubuntu.

This is not a big deal in the grand scheme, but more an annoyance. I allowed Ubuntu (Karmic) to do some updates today. now, in the File Browser, there is no longer a tab bar. Before, there was the bar located beneath the address bar that was similar to Firefox, that had the + to open new tabs. Now it is gone and I do not see an option for a tab bar anywhere. I realize i can right-click on the tree on the left to open a new tab, but I REALLY liked the original feature. Anyone know how to get it back?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to retrieve a file--it's a compressed tar file, and I can get to it via a certain URL (with a query, so it's of the form <URL>?<search options>). If I go there via Firefox, I get a prompt to download the file. Lynx documentation says that if a file is binary, rather than displaying it it will give me the option of downloading it. (Which of course I will pick; I will use the option to save the commands I type, and then when I want to run it from a script give lynx the option telling it to retrieve and use those saved commands.)
The problem: this compressed tar file, which you'd think would be recognizable as a binary file, isn't; lynx displays a page of garbage and asks me whether I'd like another.
So, my question is: how does lynx decide what it thinks is a binary file? I have grabbed the sources, and will search them.

I've got an X2 4200+ which is about 50% in use (both cores) in the worst case.
i would like to be able to close an instance of the "File Browser" in a terminal command. This needs to be done without killing nautilus completely.

Now I have this issue on Ubuntu 10.04. Whenever i close the file browser(am running gnome), it reopens and throws a pop up saying "Cant find /media/A9AE-2182 Please check the spelling and try again."
Now, under /etc/fstab, there is no such device at all. Am wondering, how can i stop this? I click on Close all windows and then shortly it sort of auto-opens and opens 2 file browsers.
Maybe this is related to another issue i have, whenever i shutdown the machine, when i boot it up, on the splash screen it says unable to mount media, press M for manual repair or S to proceed. When i proceed, gnome starts off with no window manager, the windows are without borders and am forced to login as guest and run compiz --replace.
I've found that changes configured in my hosts file are not being reflected in my web browsers, but it is in the shell. For example... If I put the following in my /etc/hosts file

View 3 Replies View RelatedSomehow i managed to change my file browser to Konqueror from whatever the default is ( i haven't managed to find the name). Now when I open my home folder it opens with Konqueror.
Interestingly enough if I open the computer that opens up simply in file browser. Does anyone know how to change back to the default as I prefer the look of it to Konqueror.
I am trying to use apparmor to restrict my file browser, which is Thunar to only let me view the files that are in the home directory and also removable media.I tried following the apparmor sticky with no success.I created the profile and tried editing it and it either started and let me do pretty much everything or did not start at all. Would it be possible for someone to help me step by step to set up a profile for thunar that would only show the home directory and removable media.
