I am wanting to turn an old desktop to a small file server, just the usual movies, music, pictures, etc. I want to be able to access this not only on my home network I want to be able to access it online so there is a way to get to my files remotely if needed. I was wondering if ubuntu server is what I must use or would the desktop edition do the trick?
View 2 Repliesusing Ubuntu 10.10 server edition I guess on my Dell Dimension 5150. 3Ghz P4 with 2Gb DDR2 6400. A ATI HD3870 512Mb and a 450watt brick. 1.5 Terabytes of hard drive space. What I would like to do with this is set it up so that I can log into this machine through my laptop or other computer on the network and watch the movies off my hard drive. Basically have a headless server that 5 to 6 computers can access and it not slow down of mess up the audio track on the movie. Is there any software I need or is this a big project that requires a whole bunch of settings?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been looking for the last few days for a good how to on setting up a home server using Ubuntu 10.10. I have found several and looked them over and have installed the server on to a system and started to get it setup. Now though I cannot access anything via http, even the php info. I want to start from scratch on this but finding the best tutorial on how to do this. The idea on what I plan to do is set it up to be able to hold mp3's on and allow them to be downloaded or played on other computers on the home network. Also will be looking to setup to have other items done as well such as a database that can accessed. I would like to be able to use both Http and Ftp on this if possible.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am interested in setting up a webserver on a PC I have laying around...more for the experience and knowledge of learning it from scratch. I have used dedicated servers before with webhosting, but did not do the installations of apache and other items. The server we had purchased had CentOS installed.
My question is, can I use this desktop I have to simply install the CentOS DVD torrent off their website, and start from there, with installing apache, and all the other items associated with a server environment to test/play around, or is there a difference and something I am missing with my plan to do this?
The end result will be having my desktop setup as a "server" I can ssh into and screw around with just to learn more about it.Sorry for the basic question. (i posted this here instead of the "newbie" section, since i figured it would get moved here)
I've played with ubuntu for quite a while now and i picked up a atom core mini pc for cheap so i thought i'd make a hobby in setting up a simple server to store files on, access files on my xbmc enabled xbox and download torrents whilst i'm at work though the torrents can wait for future projects though i installed ubuntu server 9.10, i'm aware it's CL only, anyway thus far i've managed to set up the ipaddress of it and make it fixed i'm not sure of what to do with hosts at the moment, reading on it isn't making much sense of it's purpose or layout so i've left it as is i permenently mounted a fat32 partition to /media/stuff and changed permissions to 0777 only have one user on it, myself installed samba smbfs smbclient and an openssh server, and can do all the terminal stuff from my normal pc my current issue lies with samba, with gnome desktop i've never had TOO many problems with sharing folders, however i'm stuck where to proceed in regards to editing smb.conf as there's a lot of options, some of which i'm not sure i need
- I've changed the workgroup to home
- under authentication i have security = share

Anyway on my windows xp pro machine, i can access \thork which is the machine and i see 'media-stuff' which is a start i guess, but im refuesed access automatically.
I have 2 windows pc's in my home and an office computer that have my files strewn about. I wanted to have them all in one central location that keeps a backup copy, so i used an old machine to start building a file server. I installed debian 5.0 on the machine, command line interface only. I have gotten ssh working so that i can do all my work on the box from one of my windows pc's by logging in with putty.my current problem is how to easily use the box hard drive for storing my files in an easily accessible way. i'm still working on getting samba to work so that i could map the /home directory to a drive letter on my two home pc's, but i'd also like to access files from my work pc. Before i do that, though, i wanted to know if this is safe and secure to map a drive on a remote machine through the internet? Are there any other security concerns I need to be addressing by having this file server set up?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup a server at home, it has some practical implications, but largely it is just to take a stab at it. But I need the help of someone with more experience than I in defining exactly what I'm looking to do.
Here's what I have: old PC running Gutsy server connected to router. Several laptops at home connected via wifi to router. All laptops running either Windows or Ubuntu. Here's what I'm looking for: The server centralizes file storage for all clients. I would likely incorporate a RAID and some synchronised imaging of the files. I also want the server to create disk images of the clients hdd, regardless of client OS.There would also be some shares that would be publicly accessible (myself and friends accross the country would be able to access the same drive).
So I was thinking something like what corporate environment would be nice, you log into a profile that exists on the server. Like a dumb client...all data would be stored on the server. But I'm thinking that's more like a network boot and wouldn't work via wifi (or would it?). Also that wouldn't lend itself well to laptops used on the road in areas without net access. now I'm thinking each client would have its own locally installed OS, and they would just access networked shares. I could store sensitive files on the shares, but that wouldn't provide complete backup solution for each client.
Without rambling on anymore, anyone care to throw out some ideas? I'm really just looking to see if I can do what I want. The focus is on centrallizing files, securley backing up data and client OS's and ability to restore said images quickly.
I would like to build a server to act as a file/print server for my home. My wife, sister in law, and myself would use it. I would like it to be friendly to both windows and linux. My sister and I are both dual boot and for now my wife is windows only. Pretty soon though I plan on setting her up on linux as well. What would I need? And are there any "good" guides to setting something like this up?
I would like to use the system to:
- Store media / files
- Maybe have KMyMoney on it and share with the wife
- Hook a printer to and use as common printer
I just set up an old PC as an Ubuntu Server. I've got it all connected, and set up the way I want it...here's the problem I can't access my server as long as I'm attemting to access it from my home IP. I can ssh and ping it from both my phone on 3g and another (non-local) server I have SSH access to. Because of how our apartment is set up, each bedroom has it's own separate ethernet connection. The one in the room next to mine goes unused so I set up my server on it. My ISP is Charter, if that matters.

I have a server running Ubuntu server edition with SMB server all set up and running. I've set up the main root of the drive to be shared and I've set up a user in /etc/samba/smbusers to say root = "joeflood" so I can sign in as root using the username "joeflood". This works and I have read/write access to the filesystem (yay!). However, if I browse to /home/javawag (my main user home directory), I no longer have write permissions! I can see all the files in there and read them no problem, but writing is a no-go. I'm logged in as root though?! Btw, I can login via SSH and create folders/etc as root in the /home/javawag folder, and they showed up in the SMB mount on my mac too.

Im having trouble setting my SAMBA server correctly. I have two Win machines, one with WIN7 and one with XP. I have one Ubuntu machine and Ubuntu Server 10.04. My problem is that I can only acess files from the Win 7 Machine. When I try to map out the shared dirs on my serverI get asked for user and password, when I enter my creditensials it dosent help.. What to do? I used the sample smb.conf file and open for no restrictions..

I'm trying to set my openSUSE desktop up to use the printers on my office network via Samba. I managed to get it working in 11.2 but 11.3 is giving me some trouble.I am able to access the printers and use them but I have to enter my network credentials each time I print. In 11.2 I was able to "save" my username/password and was not required to do this. Are there any Samba packages I need to add in addition to the basic ones? There seems to be a lack of documentation on this particular subject, most is concerning Windows clients printing on Linux print servers.

I have installed Nginx on my Fedora 15 64-bit Linux machine, and it works with localhost but it doesn't work online or allow other computers on the network to access it via the IP address. I have port forwarding. I have even tried different ports but they all seem to be blocked. What could be wrong? I have a netgear router.
I want to find a way to stream my home movies online, so that I can watch them anywhere. I want it to have a way to see all the movies I am streaming and just click on the one I want to play. It cannot be in flash format because of quality reasons. I'd rather it be able to support xvid or divx if possible because of its compression ratio. If not the movie would have to be no more then 1.4gbs a movie and still have good quality.
The closest thing I got to this was jinzora. I have also tried mediatomb (but I cannot figure out a way for vlc player to open the files without manually entering each link and I also cannot figure out a way for it to know at what point it is in the movie ex: 43:01/1:00:00). I am willing to use other formats if needed, but the size cannot be anymore then 1.4gb and still has to be good quality.
Somehow in the last couple of days, my adobe acrobat reader quit working online. I can read pdf files on my computer, but if try to access one through my google browser, I get a blank page. What can I do to fix? I tried downloading the most recent update of adobe but when I went to run the program I get an error message indicating there is no program to open the update file.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am fairly new to Linux, dabbled with it over the years but am a experienced windows user so not a complete noob. I am setting up Ubuntu 10.04 as a file server following a tutorial in Linux User and Developer mag which is great but having a bit of a problem getting it to work correctly.I have two folders in the OPT directory and they can only be accessed by using the main username and password for the linux machine when logging on through my Win 7 machine, if I try and access the directory called 'alex' using the Alex username/password I can log into the folder but only have read only access.
I think (but am not sure) it has something to do with setting the ownership permissions of the folders ..
part of the step after creating the directory was
# sudo chown -R root:users /opt/alex
and that didn't seem to work, it wouldn't allow me access as either user so I did
# sudo chown -R root:grae /opt/alex
grae is the main user and so that user has access but the user called alex doesn't .Can anyone advise? I am sure you need more info so please let me know what would help you see what the problem is
I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home
export HOME=~/testing/home
cd ~
screen -S testing-home
# start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc.
# test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?

Instead of doing this by actually changing the apache directory, I simply put in a symlink from the WWW directory.This worked many times, but today, under Maverick, I got the following error : "Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server."I spent a LOT of time on the web trying to solve this error and in the end, it got solved simply by enabling permissions "access" to "others" direclty on my home folder (because my Dropbox folder is, of course, within my home folder).However, I have no idea if this is a good idea. Does this mean that simply anyone could access any file on my computer ??Alternatively, does anyone know how I could proceed to make this LAMP server work WITHOUT having to change my Home directy permissions this way ?

I have already learned that it is possible to upgrade from 11.x to 11.3 using Zypper from this nice german tutorial (Upgrade). But does it also work from 10.3? How can i setup OPENSUSE to find/access my Windows Home Server 2003. Can you help me with this. Just to let you know. Am i missing something so i can access them locally.
