I installed samba server in my external HDD. But it is not shown in system ----> Administration. Is there any problem. Then How to give permission to access home folder.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Linux Box running Fedora 13, it has Samba installed, and I have configured it, I also have a Windoze 7 PC, I want to be able to access the Windoze PC's files from my Linux Box, and vice versa, but when I try to open the Windoze PC in the network on my Linux Box, it asks for my Username and Password, I enter them, the box goes away then pops back up asking for them again... and on the Windoze PC, I find my Linux on the network, open it, it asks for my username and password, I enter them, and it lets me in, but then when I try opening my shared folder, it gives me: "You do not have permission to access \LINUX Shared Folder. Contact your network administrator to request access".

Upon install I installed samba with the command: Code: sudo yum install samba samba-client cifs-utils I can now see the smb.conf file and could probably use samba via command line; but, I would really like to use the GUI to configure samba as I have in the past. The problem is, there is no samba gui. How do I get the samba GUI back under: System->Administration where it usually is?

1) The superuser (me)
2) The user 1001 (my elder son)
3) The user 1002 (my younger son)
Both users 1001 and 1002 can not access their files system, and also they can not save any attachments from incoming mails.
What I tried so far:
I accessed the file manager as superuser, and went: >Root>Home. Here I right-clicked on the folder User 1001, selected properties, selected the tab 'permissions' and allowed this user to read and write into this folder. I also checked the checkbox �extend this permission to all subfolders and its contents.
The problem is, when I reboot, everything is 'forgotten' and I am at quadrant zero again.
Eventually I should state that part of the folders are from a backup drive, because the hard disk had to be replaced so, once I re-installed the OS on the new hard drive, I copied the folders from the backup drive into the home folder.
One last question:
Is there a good tutorial about permissions?
I want to give a mounted folder /mnt/folder access so that 'root and the group test have read write access' and all other users have read access I understand most of the chmod command, the users groups world etc but where in the 'command' do you specify which 'group' or 'user' you are giving the read / write access to? in all the tutorials i've seen no where do you specify the actual group or user.

I am sharing a NTFS formated hard drive where the mount point is in my home directory, as well as a printer connected via USB. I am to the point where printing works (using it as an ipp print share, samba is configured for it, but I don't know if it works or not), and I can access the shared folder from Windows, but I can't access the shared folder from any Ubuntu machine. Unfortunately from time to time it seems to get messed up and either all the 7 machines on my home network can't be seen or I can't access the shares on some. I have 2 Windows XP computers 4 Kubuntu and one Linux Mint KDE, all the latest versions. I'd rather not plough through all the documentation for Samba, but would really like a "model" smb.conf with a few comments about parts that might have legitimate variants. I have researched this with Google searches many times but have failed to find the information I need in concise form.

After installing Fedora next to Ubuntu with a common home-folder, I've had troubles with many different things. When I finally fixed grub2 so I could display all the OSs available, I tried to boot Ubuntu. Then I got three messages, one telling me .ICEauthority wasn't able to upgrade. I've now realized it was because my user in Ubuntu didn't own the home-folder. I typed "sudo chown -R jp:jp /home/jp/" in a shell, and it worked. But when I then logged into fedora, I got the same error messages, so I had to type "su -c chown -R jp:jp /home/jp". Apparently, jp in Fedora isn't the same user as jp in Ubuntu.
How do I make my home folder owned by both?
I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
I successfully installed Samba, but have problem with access to any shared folder on my secondary drive. If I try access secondary drive with admin user, everything is fine. If with another account try to access via samba to shared folder on partition with Ubuntu, everything is fine again. Every folder has set privileges to read&write to everyone, so shouldn't be problem here.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 12 a couple of days ago. This is my secondary operating system. The main one is Mint 8 and in order to have the same documents in both OSs I have a separate /home partition, but for some reason I don't see any of my Documents. In the installation I told fedora that I already had a /home partition and to use it. Also if I mount Mint's disk, while I can browse the folders, I can't see any document .
Finally I can access my Mint's home folder and files but since my username in fedora has a capital A it created another home folder. How can I change my home folder path so it point to the other home folder?
