Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up Server Access Point With Wg311(v1)
Jan 15, 2010
Ive spent the last couple of days looking for a way to set this up and cant find the solution anywhere. Right from what iv read so far i understand i have to set the card to master mode but when i try
Code:
sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode master
i get the error
Code:
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.I read somewhere that the madwifi driver is up to the task but im still quite new to linux and not really sure how to change the drivers. this is what iv done so far
Code:
wget http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/madwifi-trunk-current.tar.gz
tar xvxf madwifi-trunk-current.tar.gz
cd madwifi-trunk-r4108-20100115/

I have a Sonicwall access point, which I am able to set up through the interface, but after that I am unable to achieve a connection through my wireless card. I have a good understanding of everything involved, but really have no hands on experience when it comes to networking.
Code:
lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 735 Host (rev 01)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Virtual PCI-to-PCI bridge (AGP)
[code]....
Also, I should have mentioned that @ the interface for the Sonicwall it said that "no DNS server had been specified", but I set it up for DHCP, and I thought my ISP is using PPPoE (which I also thought used DHCP).

I'm trying to set up a wireless access point and router using Ubuntu 10.10. My machine has an Atheros AR5001X+ PCI card, and eth0 is connected to an ADSL modem. After literally days and days of going in circles, I'm hoping that somebody here can help get me on track. This sort of works, though I had to go through some other contortions to get the madwifi driver to finally compile on my machine. At this point, I can see and connect to the WAP, but nothing more. When I try "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart",
I also have a second problem, which is that I want to use WebMin to manage this server, but I cannot figure out how to get the ADSL client module configured -- RP-PPPoE version 3. It seems to expect to work with pppoe-start, pppoe-stop, and pppoe-status, but when I try to run pppoe-status it says "Link is down", even though my ppp connection is actually working. Is is possible to use the WebMin ADSL client module with Ubuntu? I spent a lot of time trying to get pppoe-start, stop, etc. working but it was a complete mess and never seemed to behave. Finally, I just put the ppp startup commands into the /etc/network/interfaces file and that worked, but now the pppoe-* commands no longer seem to function.

I'm trying to setup my ubuntu server as an access point but am running into some issues.
The server has an Atheros wireless card (AR5008 chipset) and I have used the following link to set it up in master mode using madwifi drivers: [URL]
I then used this link to set it upas an access point using hostapd. [URL]
But inspite of following the above steps, other wireless clients in my LAN are unable to see the ssid "Linuxmaster"
Although iwconfig shows that the card is in master mode.
iwconfig

eth0 no wireless extensions.
wifi0 no wireless extensions.

I'm running several Ubuntu servers with LTSP thin clients in our classrooms. It's been a royal pain trying to get them to synchronize time properly.Currently I'm looking at 7 client's login screen and each one has different time. It's frustrating and I've done all the reading I could in regard to NTP and LTSP with time, etc.I'm trying to even set NTP to point to an external server, but my thin clients don't get that setting for some reason. They still pick whatever time they want to present to the end user. Once the user logs in, the time seems to be fine. It's just at the login screen.Since I'm no expert on NTP I figured I'd ask to see what users here thought.
EDIT - I was told that the GUI version of Ubuntu handles NTP at System-Administration-TimeAndDate. Is this true? I was told my /etc/ntp.conf file is empty because that file is only used in the server edition of Ubuntu.

I installed 10.04 onto an old dell and its was running great, internet etc.. I then had my home desktop crash and said great, let me bring the dell home so the wife can use it. At home, i have a wireless card ( Netgear WG311 ) that I then installed into the Dell. Being that she was needing to use it online right away, I searched for the first install as it was not detected, and used used synaptic to install the bcmwl-kernal-source as that was the prefer ed driver for Netgear. So now that I installed that, not only have I not fixed the wireless issue, I now have no wired internet. I've been searching and re reading as many steps as I can, but am running out of time as she needs the computer tomorrow. Installed the ndwrapper ? but was not able to actually get the driver installed. All the other threads seem to be older ubuntu versions, and maybe its just me but the slight variation from one to the nex has me a little confuzed.

I have a wireless network in my house through a Zyxel P-320W router, and I've noticing that the signal strength isn't very good in the basement. Now I have this old D-Link-624+ router lying around for a long time and I've been hoping to get it to work as an access point, that way I can move freely around the house without changing which router I'm connected to.

I installed it alongside Win XP, using Wubi, and it seems I use Ubuntu 10.04.Everything worked out as expected, and my wired internet connection works like a dream. However:My wireless connection seem a little buggy.I can see all networks (except WPA2) so even if I want to fix the WPA2 problem, I'd rather just open my network for now.
So my network is now open, I see it in the NetworkManager list, and as i try to connect, the following happens:The wireless symbol start flashing. From here it keeps flashing, untill it gives up.I use RT2870 drivers, and D-Link DWA-140 USB wireless adapter.
It goes without saying I am a freshman regarding Linux, so if anyone knows what to do, and cares to take the time to tell me, please do tell me in a detailed manner.I do know the basics of the Terminal, and yes, I do know how to copy/paste commands I find linux way more satisfying than Windows so far ... And thanks in advance for giving away your time More info can be given upon request (You might have to explain how to find that specific info)

I'm going to be working in an office with no wifi and no 3g signal but my laptop will be connected to the web via a wired network.Any way I can use the wifi card in my ubuntu laptop to create a wireless access point so my phone can connect? Would have to be easily selected and deselected as I'd then want to use wifi to connect to the internet at home.

I am fairly new to Linux, dabbled with it over the years but am a experienced windows user so not a complete noob. I am setting up Ubuntu 10.04 as a file server following a tutorial in Linux User and Developer mag which is great but having a bit of a problem getting it to work correctly.I have two folders in the OPT directory and they can only be accessed by using the main username and password for the linux machine when logging on through my Win 7 machine, if I try and access the directory called 'alex' using the Alex username/password I can log into the folder but only have read only access.
I think (but am not sure) it has something to do with setting the ownership permissions of the folders ..
part of the step after creating the directory was
# sudo chown -R root:users /opt/alex
and that didn't seem to work, it wouldn't allow me access as either user so I did
# sudo chown -R root:grae /opt/alex
grae is the main user and so that user has access but the user called alex doesn't .Can anyone advise? I am sure you need more info so please let me know what would help you see what the problem is

About two years ago, my church set up a wireless access point. They gave it a WEP encryption, and wrote all the keys down on a piece of paper and taped it to the router, which was in full view, and reachable for anyone to get what they need and connect. I used it once, saved all the settings to the default network manager applet on my laptop (running Fedora Core 12), and put it back. Earlier this year, the front hall (where the router and paper with encryption keys was stored), was completely redone, and the router put up in the drop ceiling.
Mistake. Now the darn thing is sitting on top of Fiberglass insulation, and impossible to get to. There are people who need to connect, but since it's a church, and they don't really understand, they went and buried that router WITH all the encryption keys. So long story short, I need to get these people connected, but need to find the key... preferably without Hacking in. Is there a way, on the default "Network Manager" Applet, or in the terminal to VIEW saved keys?

I've a Nokia 2323 Classic which I want to use to access to the internet on my laptop.
A friend of mine with a Dell Inspiron 15 running Windows 7 could connect to the net by just pairing up and right clicking on my phone's icon in the devices menu and selecting connect to internet via access point.
I've an eMachines E725 which lacks bluetooth. To overcome this I used a dongle which was able to successfully pair up with my phone via the bluetooth menu in preferences.
So what next ? How do I use the phone to connect to the internet directly via access point ?
I noticed that I did not need any operator related settings to do so in windows 7 and the phone worked regardless of SIM card present so I assume it should work similarly in linux.
What is left is to ask the system to treat it as an internet access device and use it that way.
How do I do it ? I don't mind a commandline way but a GUI would be better because I'm not the only person using my laptop.

I am in a situation at the moment which means I am going to be without an ISp for a week or two, and I can't survive that long without the intenet!!! What's more, I have 8 computers that need to connect, though not necessarily at the same time, but certainly more than one at a time. Anyway, I came up with an idea to buy a Mobile Broadband Dongle, and then share the connection via my PC. Problem is, I don't know how I would go about setting my PC to be a Wireless Access Point/makeshift Wireless Router, and sharing the connection.

Ubuntu 10.10 (kernel 2.6.35-23, amd64), Network Manager is installed, the laptop HP 6735s (I am certain that wifi is working, - I can connect to other wireless networks), connected to the Internet through ppp0 (VPN), eth0 looks at LAN interface, WiFi - eth1 (info from iwconfig).
WiFi driver "Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, andBCM4322-based hardware" is installed.
Objective - to create WiFi access point and connect through it to ppp0 with my phone (HTC Desire) or other devices.
My VPN connection (ppp0) and network are registered through my internet provider's script - [URL], not set up not by Network Manager. If I create a new wireless network in NM (point-to-point or access point, IPv4 set to auto) - laptop can not find the network, Internet immediately fall off. Through the manual settings and complex scripts that I found websites and forums I could not get it to work ..

10.04 in a couple of identical lenovo laptops (of friends) suddenly have stopped connecting successfully to wireless, coinciding approximately with a mains power socket fail at the modem router, now fixed. presumably the machines were trying to connect to the access point, which may or may not have been working, but themodem router was not. Now, internet connection and wireless access point is fixed ok and is back up, and i can connect wirelessly to the access point ok using an eeepc with 10.04.2 with no problem so the access point is working ok
the target laptop/s are still ok via wired ethernet, and can *also* connect to a neighbours open wireless (a british telecom so called fon network, it asks for an account password), and all local wireless networks can be seen normally, and the home access point ssid can also be seen ok. so the aptop wireless is connecting ok, but not to this particular access point now. maybe someting has got screwed up? it is wpa2 and when clicked, after a long-ish time, the authentication is requested, then given, correctly, and still not connecting, asks for authentication again etc etc. no local secure wallet is being used.
when upgrading these laptops for my friend some time ago from 9.04 i have a small recall that 10.04 had a odd thing with wireless authentication (?) bug? i have deleted the network connections gui listing for this ssid and restarted the laptop, still no joy.

I'm sure that some of us techies have found the need from time to time to have a portable wireless bridge (see ascii art below) on our jaunts into the big bad user-woods, and I am here to ask the question of HOW to pull this off, with the least installation/configuration possible, as my tech lappy is also my main computer. What I want to do is this:
Code:
(ISP) -> (wlan0 - [MyLappy] - eth0) -> (Client computer)
Basically, thats a mess, so i'll explain it further:
wlan0 grabs the netz, and a computer connected to eth0 via switch/router/crossover cable can access those netz.
1. No configuration on the client would be prime choice rib for me.
2. Client should be any OS/Arch.
Any grand ideas out there? Currently using FC10, with various extra repos enabled.
Oh, and N00by alert, I'm learning quick, and am not shy to try new/complicated things, just bear with me!
