General :: Home Server - Configure Fedora 15 To Allow Access Via Port 80 From Other Computers

Aug 6, 2011

I am trying to make my home server accessible to the whole web. I have installed Nginx on my Fedora 15 64-bit Linux machine, and it works with localhost but it doesn't work online or allow other computers on the network to access it via the IP address. It keeps coming back with: Could not connect

I have port forwarding. I have even tried different ports but they all seem to be blocked. What could be wrong? I have a netgear router.

Ubuntu Servers :: Provide Internet Access To Multiple Computers Using Only A Hub And 1 Ethernet Port

Mar 18, 2010

Ever need to provide access to multiple PC's and did not have a router only a hub. Maybe this isn't original thinking, but then again maybe you didn't think of doing it this way (which i am sure there are many ways to do it) So I have 2 Ubuntu Servers, 1 Windows Box and a Hub - All 3 with internet access off of single ip and single Ethernet port.

While searching for a backup method today I came across Clonezilla. I was wondering if this was the right thing for me and since I needed to backup my roommates PC for a reformat and install of Windows I decided I would give it a try, but only if it would work. I didn't want the hassle of going into the main part of the house and finding out what cord was what as there is a cable modem connected into a switch (4 static IP's with internet) and one port of the switch hooked to a router) Anyways, didn't work he was on the router I was on the switch)

But this got me thinking. When I setup my server to do this, during one of the setup scripts it said it was setting up Internet access for client machines and that it was assigning them IP addresses threw a DHCP server that it had installed.

So, I dug up the hub connected the internet cable to hub up link and Server 1 on port 1 Server 2 on port 2 and Windows on port 3 The main server gets the internet provided IP address and routes it to the hub via a virtual interface. Server 2 is configured for DHCP and the windows box, It was set to get info automatically but it didn't fill the DNS info so I had to manually do that (just a heads up) I decided to use OpenDNS Servers (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220) but im sure putting in the gateway IP address would have worked too.

So, by now if you need this I am sure you are excited and want to get to it. Like i said there are probably other ways of doing it, ways that don't involve you installing clonezilla and DRBL, maybe even just DRBL is needed, maybe one of them installed whats needed as a dependency- all I know is it works, if you know - elaborate so people know, but hey- this way not only do you have internet access on all PC's you can deploy custom images to them as well.

Fedora Networking :: Port Forwarding For Apache Server At Home Network

Feb 7, 2010

I am setting up Apache (Fedora 12) inside my home network. From inside my home network I access it without any problem. I need to set it up to access it from internet. I have the following questions. Here is temporary setup for testing purpose.
Internet-->ADSL modem (SEIMENS Speed Stream 4200)---> Apache (Fedora 12)

1. Do I have to do any kind of ports forwarding on ADSL modem. (There is no option to do port forwarding on Modem) May be I need different Model of Modem??
2. I tired to Ping my real IP for modem form another computer from internet. I am even unable to PING the ADSL 's real IP. Why it is that?

Software :: Stream Movies And Music From Home Server To Other Computers On Network

Mar 26, 2010

I have a debian home server right now, I'm using samba for my file server but I was wanting to stream my movies and music to my other computers. My family (the other users on the network) are NOT computer savvy, and to top it off they are using both Windows (xp) and Mac (Snow Leopard) machines. So I'm looking for software that is simple to use that will allow other operating systems to use it. I would think the easiest way would be to stream the music/movies through a home website. I have seen quite a few programs out there that stream music, but none for movies.

Fedora :: VMWare Web Server - Can't Access Tomcat On Port 8080 From The Outside World

Jul 29, 2009

I am having trouble getting my FC10 with tomcat visible to the outside world. first off i am somewhat new to linux. I am running vmware workstation to host my linux web server. i have my VMWare setup to use my second NIC solely. it is bridged and the tcp/ip is disable from the host. i can ping the ip address but cant access tomcat on port 8080 from the outside. i can hit it fine from inside fedora. i have configured my router (wrt54gs with DD-WRT firmware) for port forwarding. so basically i think that the problem is somewhere in between the host and the vmware configuring allowing the port to be forwarded through.

General :: Server - Can't Access Home Directory Over SMB

Feb 26, 2011

I have a server running Ubuntu server edition with SMB server all set up and running. I've set up the main root of the drive to be shared and I've set up a user in /etc/samba/smbusers to say root = "joeflood" so I can sign in as root using the username "joeflood". This works and I have read/write access to the filesystem (yay!). However, if I browse to /home/javawag (my main user home directory), I no longer have write permissions! I can see all the files in there and read them no problem, but writing is a no-go. I'm logged in as root though?! Btw, I can login via SSH and create folders/etc as root in the /home/javawag folder, and they showed up in the SMB mount on my mac too.

Fedora :: LDAP - Centralize Login And Passwords For All Home Computers

Jan 25, 2010

While I've been using Linux for a little while now, I have only recently been getting into setting up and using a server at home (in part because until recently I only had ONE computer at home). I have heard of LDAP and OpenLDAP, but I am not sure if this is the best tool to do the following. Centralize logins and passwords for all of the computers at home, so I only have to change/manage one place. Since I keep installing Linux Distros it would be nice if I didn't have to add each person, individually each time.

Provide single sign-on authentication for the user so when they go to the Samba server they don't have to do another login, but they are limited in what they can see. Basically I don't want the kids being able to see *MY* files
- Works with Linux (various) and Windows (Windows 7 more than XP)
- Works with desktop and laptop
- Be able to, possibly, pass this authentication to the web server so likewise do not need to log into the web server after logging into the computer.
- (optional) be able to set up a script to run automatically to either map network drives or mount samba directories based on the user being logged in (smb://user/<username>) and/or backup the system.

I say optional because if it can that is great, but if it cannot then it isn't a show-stopper. Like I said, I am very new to servers and networking and do not know where to start regarding this. Right now I have a basic (too open) file server and a web server just beginning to be developed (working on Drupal). Not only do I need to figure out what/where to research about the server settings but also setting up the client-side of things.

CentOS 5 Server :: Configure A Mail Server Over A Home Internet Connection?

Feb 12, 2009

I have one server at home, connected through a router that gives me a static IP:192.168.1.2 - My PC192.168.1.3 - CentOS serverI enabled the port 80 into router forwarding system and I can connect properly to CentOS server, using the IP my internet provider gives me. My router automatically forwards a changed IP to my dyndns.com account so I can also access the server through a domain name (I pay to have it linked to one of my domains). My next step is to configure the mail server (dovecot) , so I can send emails from my local server(192.168.1.3).I was wondering if anyone has any tutorial links or tips to have the mail server configured through a home internet provider + home router.

ppp0 for a vpn connection on an English Server (IP DHCP)
tun0 for openvpn i use it to connect to my French Server from Anywhere

I draw it here

My problem is when i activate my ppp0 connexion i can't connect tun0 because all port are redirect on ppp0 connexion (i can connect only when i'm on the LAN)

General :: SFTP Server Port Blocked On Uni Network / Need To Change Listening Port

Oct 21, 2010

VERY new to linux, erm but I have an issue that needs solving!I recently moved to university, where their network blocks sftp port 22, this means that I cannot connect to my FTP server which is running a version of linux. Now I've got this ftp server connected to a seedbox and it was created using the following walk through..Code:I have written this guide for a friend, but I though it would be useful for others as well.

There are several guides floating around, but I found that most always cock up in some way. This one is tried and tested to work on Debian Etch (on an OVH rps, but should apply to most servers). If there is a new stable release of rtorrent/libtorrent then I will update this guide to show you how to update it (without reinstalling the whole server).

At the bottom there are also instructions to install ftp access & some network monitoring software.Basically, I would really like someone to be able to construct the commands on how to change the listen port for sftp connection on linux or add another port to the list that Linux would use so that I could put in through putty.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Access Server From Home IP

I've got it all connected, and set up the way I want it...here's the problem I can't access my server as long as I'm attemting to access it from my home IP. I can ssh and ping it from both my phone on 3g and another (non-local) server I have SSH access to. Because of how our apartment is set up, each bedroom has it's own separate ethernet connection. The one in the room next to mine goes unused so I set up my server on it. My ISP is Charter, if that matters.

Server :: Access The Servlet Engine's Web GUI Just Fine Over Its Dedicated Port Via Browser?

Nov 26, 2010

Been a while since I last posted here, though I stop by often. Unfortunately I find myself in a bit of a pickle again. Here's the situation. I have an RHEL3u5 server running Apache 2.0.48 and an equivalent of Tomcat and JBoss. IBM's WebSphere Application Server 6.0.2 to be exact, the Apache also being one of their flavors (IBMIHS).

Everything's been going dandy since forever, but lately the httpd processes seemingly just hit a brick wall of some unknown kind. Checking the /server-status page reveals a whole lot of piling up "waits".

The funny part is that the load average rarely goes higher than 1.0, I/O seems within limits, memory usage as far as I can tell seems fine, disk usage appears all good... I would've felt more at ease if something did shoot through the roof, but there's just nothing to go on. It's definitely Apache getting its knickers all in a twist as well since I can access the servlet engine's web GUI just fine over its dedicated port via browser.

Here's what I noticed so far: Apache processes rise steadily to over 35 or so, after which it all goes south fast. As a result and as a temporary fix, I've enabled a cronjob that checks the amount of httpd processes and just restarts Apache if they're above 28. So far this seems to keep things sort of happy, but obviously I'm still twitchy with the overall state of affairs. I do not have the settings immediately at hand, but here are some further details so far:

Server spec:
8 x Xeon CPUs
8GB RAM

I'll post further details probably on Monday, specifically key portions of the httpd.conf file.
