I have a server running Ubuntu server edition with SMB server all set up and running. I've set up the main root of the drive to be shared and I've set up a user in /etc/samba/smbusers to say root = "joeflood" so I can sign in as root using the username "joeflood". This works and I have read/write access to the filesystem (yay!). However, if I browse to /home/javawag (my main user home directory), I no longer have write permissions! I can see all the files in there and read them no problem, but writing is a no-go. I'm logged in as root though?! Btw, I can login via SSH and create folders/etc as root in the /home/javawag folder, and they showed up in the SMB mount on my mac too.

I am trying to make my home server accessible to the whole web. I have installed Nginx on my Fedora 15 64-bit Linux machine, and it works with localhost but it doesn't work online or allow other computers on the network to access it via the IP address. It keeps coming back with: Could not connect
I have port forwarding. I have even tried different ports but they all seem to be blocked. What could be wrong? I have a netgear router.

I'm currently switching to a new laptop that will be my main machine and currently I use a laptop and a desktop on a daily basis. The laptop will continue to be used by another member of my family but the desktop will no longer have any use (well I might later build a new desktop but this one has finished his service).
The machine in question has:
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ @ 2.4GHz
4x512MB DDR-400 (2GB Total)
Seagate 200GB SATA 7200RPM 8MB Cache Hard Drive
Geforce 6600GT 256MB GDDR3
Since I will no longer use it as a desktop/working machine I'd like to set it up as a home server. However I can't decide which OS to use for that. I have access to all Windows Versions since XP/2003 (with the exception of Windows Home Server) and I have some knowledge using both Windows and Linux so that's not a problem on my choice.

I just set up an old PC as an Ubuntu Server. I've got it all connected, and set up the way I want it...here's the problem I can't access my server as long as I'm attemting to access it from my home IP. I can ssh and ping it from both my phone on 3g and another (non-local) server I have SSH access to. Because of how our apartment is set up, each bedroom has it's own separate ethernet connection. The one in the room next to mine goes unused so I set up my server on it. My ISP is Charter, if that matters.

I tried hard so that I can stay away from version control but in almost good job specifications, I find version control as requirement. So I thought I had to start from somewhere. I always tried to read it but haven't got much luck with it. So I have few problems to ask. I am confused and I really want to know how can I use version control in my context and how will my working environment change with it.
I have Linux VPS Server. I use capnel/whm to create sites in php/joomla. So is version control a software or script which I can install on my linux box like ./configure. Or I have to install it on every site like any framework I use Dreamweaver to edit files via FTP. Now if I install version control then do I still use same method to edit files or then method gets chnaged What about the database like MySQL will it stays same or its also version controlled Will version control make my system slow and how much space it uses on my server.

I was wondering if ubuntu server is what I must use or would the desktop edition do the trick?

I have a very simple php web application deployed on linux (centOS4) machine. It creates a file and stores the file in /tmp folder on my linux machine. The path for this file is specified in the href attribute of the link. Ideally when we click this link the download manager should pop up so that the file can be downloaded on client machine.
When i access this website remotely from my window xp machine on firefox it downloads the file properly but when i run on internet explorer (i have IE7 on my windows XP) and click the link, the download manager does'nt pop's up. even when i right-click that link and select save as, an error message pop's up saying "file path not found". possibly IE is not able to determine the linux file path .so how do i work around this. is there some specific way for specifying the linux file paths to be downloaded by IE?

Ok, for some reason I can't get autofs to work on /home. I setup a NIS server and wanted to map the /home on the client to the /home on the server with NFS. But I want to use autofs to mount the users' home directories. BUT I get an error every time. Here is my configuration:Turned off firewall and SELinux on both system to rule those out. It works if I use /tmp/home as the autofs mount, but no with /home.

I'd like to know what solutions do you, people, use to backup a live system that acts as a small home mail/file/irc/web server and some other purposes. For example, right now, to backup the mail, I have to stop fetchmail, kill vixie-cron to avoid any problem and then do the backup. Then restart vixie-cron.I wonder if there's any solution that will leave me do the backup without all this hassle.

I have a computer which has a public IP.My ISP has allowed only port 22 for my machine to be accessed outside from internet.I want rest of my computers which are connected to this machine be accessible via SSH on internet.I can configure IPTABLES to route different ports to internal machines but since ISP has given only one port for the gateway how can I go for it any guesses. I came across some thing reverse SSH tunneling but that has to keep the connection alive all the time at gateway I want my trusted people to be directly able to access the machines on LAN to which they have account to login in this scenario.

After adding a second ubuntu variant to this machine I wanted to share the home directories so I had easy access to the same files regardless. so I read up on modifying home directories and put in the correct location and then rebooted. On boot-up the system warned me that it could not access the "shared" home directory and after a few more errors and warnings ended up at a blank screen with a mouse pointer!. All I can do is access a term window (ctrl-alt f4). So what I need is to know is where the user properties are stored so I can go and edit those from term rather than the usual way!

I grant read privilege to all the users to my .vimrc file . But my colleague still can't read my .vimrc file . I guess in addiction to give the read privilege to the .vimrc file, in some way I should give the person who want to read it the "access right" to my home directory first---which I don't know how to do it.

Instead of doing this by actually changing the apache directory, I simply put in a symlink from the WWW directory. This worked many times, but today, under Maverick, I got the following error : "Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server."I spent a LOT of time on the web trying to solve this error and in the end, it got solved simply by enabling permissions "access" to "others" direclty on my home folder (because my Dropbox folder is, of course, within my home folder). However, I have no idea if this is a good idea. Does this mean that simply anyone could access any file on my computer ??Alternatively, does anyone know how I could proceed to make this LAMP server work WITHOUT having to change my Home directy permissions this way ?
