Server :: Rsyslogd Doesn't Seem To Listen On All Interfaces

I'm running ubuntu 9.10, the box has 2 network interfaces. I've got rsyslogd running on this box also. On one of the interfaces I have a VoIP ATA which I've configured to send syslog messages to the ubuntu box, however they're not coming up in the log file (I've configured syslogd.conf to capture logs for local2.debug and local3.debug).
rsyslogd seems to be working ok for data coming through on the other interface, but not this one. I've verified the ATA is sending data by using tcpdump and have confirmed it's using local2.debug and local3.debug. It seems perhaps it might not be listening on all interfaces? rsyslog is running with the -c4 switch.

I'm getting some problems setting up a Postgresql-8.4 server (using Debian Lenny).
After have installed the PGSQL server, I've changed the following files as bellow code...
If you encounter this message, please check if the server you're trying to contact is actually running PostgreSQL on the given port. Test if you have network connectivity from your client to the server host using ping or equivalent tools. Is your network / VPN / SSH tunnel / firewall configured correctly?
For security reasons, PostgreSQL does not listen on all available IP addresses on the server machine initially. In order to access the server over the network, you need to enable listening on the address first.
For PostgreSQL servers starting with version 8.0, this is controlled using the "listen_addresses" parameter in the postgresql.conf file. Here, you can enter a list of IP addresses the server should listen on, or simply use '*' to listen on all available IP addresses. For earlier servers (Version 7.3 or 7.4), you'll need to set the "tcpip_socket" parameter to 'true'.
You can use the postgresql.conf editor that is built into pgAdmin III to edit the postgresql.conf configuration file. After changing this file, you need to restart the server process to make the setting effective.
If you double-checked your configuration but still get this error message, it's still unlikely that you encounter a fatal PostgreSQL misbehaviour. You probably have some low level network connectivity problems (e.g. firewall configuration). Please check this thoroughly before reporting a bug to the PostgreSQL community.
This is the same configuration that I have in other Lenny server, which works well.

In Ubuntu 9.10 I configured manually network settings to /etc/network/interfaces, and it works fine when I run /etc/init.d/networking restart.
Problem is that those settings are not loaded to GUI application (Preferences/Network connections).
I don't want to edit my preferences there, I just want to use my interfaces file as default! Do you know what's going on?

I'm building up a server based on 8.04 LTS. It's using OpenVZ, and as part of that it creates a virtual network interface venet0. I add a stanza to /etc/network/interfaces that looks like this:

Looking further, I note that /etc/init.d/networking is not symlinked into anything other than the rcS.d directory. It's been a while since I've been tinkering at this level, but I understand that there should be a symlink from rc2.d/Sxxnetworking into ../etc/init.d/networking. So I wonder where eth0 is getting configured.

I have three VMs (VMWare Server 2) all running Ubuntu Server 10.04. (one I asked to be a samba share from the outset, the others are blank server installs, no pre-config)
I follow the layout in the community documentation regarding setting up firewall rules through iptables. I.e. I create a file called iptables.rules and place it in /etc. I then modify the /etc/network/interfaces file to look like this:

However this third one I have reinstalled Ubuntu 3 times now, and every time as soon as I modify the /etc/network/interfaces file, eth0 fails to start up (is not visible in ifconfig, only the loopback adapter), and no networking works.
I have tried reducing the iptables.rules file (which is a carbon copy across all machines anyway) to a basic accept all rule, and it still doesn't like it. As soon as I remove those two extra lines in the interfaces file, the network starts up no problems and eth0 is there.

I am using iptables and what i want to do is have is log to a specific file that i have set for it. Here is what i edited to rsyslog.conf
#kern.* /dev/console
:msg, contains, "iptables" /var/log/iptables

now as far as iptables rules here is what i am working with...
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --tcp-flags ALL NONE -m limit --limit 5/m --limit-burst 7 -j LOG --log-level 4 --log-prefix "iptables"
however when i run my script i get this kind of output:
iptables v1.4.9: unknown option `--log-level'
Try `iptables -h' or 'iptables --help' for more information. when i do 'iptables -L -n' i get this kind of output..

why i am getting this error unknown option '--log-level' and two why is not writing anything to /var/log/iptables when i do 'cat /var/log/iptables' i get nothing

I am trying to figure out how to turn my 10.10 server into a listener only. I have it set up using snort/acidbase. It is grabbing my network traffic just fine. I want to now set up a second server to hold all the data it collects. I need to change the snort server so it only listens. I disabled ping responses, but I want to go farther than that. I want to disable responses all together. I want it to only grab the data and store it.

I have a weird issue that I have not seen on any forum. My jaunty on DELL studio laptop seems connected to net, but I can not access any network service (ssh, firefox etc.). But when I connect a cable the cable lights blink as it should be and in wireless connection my wifi light blinks.
It was working 2 days ago without problem, and I have not done big changes recently.I removed and reinstalled network-manager and network-manager-gnome. Nothing changed. I see a message in each restart as follows (when Openafs is starting). I can reproduce it with "/etc/init.d/openafs-client restart"

I wish to use the VNC server built in to the Ubuntu to easily access it from other computers on my local network. I need to skew the VNC Server port off of the normal 5900 to something else because I am using VNC to access several computers (sometimes simultaneously) so each VNC server needs to be set with a different port #. At this point it is all local subnet connections with no incoming internet access and I am not worried about security.

Client unable to listen to NIS domain server.I have configured an NIS server, which is working fine.I then configured an NIS client to share some like passwd, shadow, etc.By default the client was trying to communicate to the NIS server using the broadcast method..However if I restart the client computer, it fails to communicate or Listen to the domain server. Once I login to the pc, I then check the /etc/yp.conf file and it switched back to the broadcast method.Is there any way that I can make this entry: domain naman.com server station51.naman.com permanent so that even after the reboot it should communicate using the client-server connection rather than the broadcast connection.

I'm using OpenSuse 11.2 64 bits When I try to listen to music in Grooveshark Grooveshark - Listen to Free Music Online - Internet Radio - Free MP3 Streaming I can listen fine, and it seems to work ok, when suddenly the sound of the website stops to work, my processor gets overload and I've to reopen the site to continue to listen. I have a web service that needs to change to destination of rsyslogd on the fly. I have tried this in a bash script and it does not work.
pidrsyslogd='pidof -x rsyslogd'
sudo kill $pidrsyslod
rsyslogd -4 -l $LOGFILEURL
I get the error that rsyslogd is "already running"; as soon as I kill it in the second line it restarts.

I have a built-in gigabit Ethernet card which is connected to a router. Router's IP address is 192.168.2.1 My IP is 192.168.2.161 (eth0) I also have a Nokia N900 connected via USB and its IP is 192.168.1.1. It serves as a second router and on that interface (usb0) my IP is 192.168.1.2 N900 is also connected to a wireless network. Router of that network has the IP 10.0.0.1 and N900's IP is 10.0.0.50 (wlan0) My problem is that I want to reach a server at 10.0.0.7 from my computer. Is there a way I can do that?

This morning I was configuring a DNS server through Yast at home, I've done it once before (in another wireless lan)and it works perfectly. But this morning, after I clicked "start dns server now", everything freezed, and caps lock light on keyboard kept flashing. I rebooted laptop,it couldn't boot into run level-5 and there were few "skipped" items and "failed" items displayed.... Sorry I'm new to linux so I re-installed it this afternoon, and kept /home partition, formatted / partition.
Everything seems to be fine after re-installation, again I tried configuring a DNS server and clicked "start dns server now", but the same problem appeared, caps lock light kept flashing and I rebooted the laptop but fortunately this time it didn't fail on any items when booting
In Yast-Network Settings, I choose "use controlled with network manager", and I can connect to wireless router and browsing web, but there are no any interfaces shown in Yast-Firewall, and this time, after I clicked "start dns server now", nothing happens, dns server just won't start...

Is there something that blocks cron from running a shutdown command? I'm doing a daily bounce to break an attack (I have thread about that in security forum), but I always end up doing it manually. The cron log shows it being fired off at the right time...but the server never bounces. I thought maybe I just missed it, but there is nothing in messages that shows the server restarting (unlike when i do it manually, you see the start-up logging).

I just installed KVM on a new system and just found out the hard way that virt-manager cannot be installed on the same machine because of a library conflict, so I will have to manage my VMs from another machine. I will use a SSH tunnel to forward the port, but I don't know what it is. Also, how do I start KVM?

After installing fedora 10 KDE, i noticed I can't listen to any music with xmms,amarok,xmms2 etc. Nothing works
I updated everything I believe, it just won't play the files period. I get sound from ..... videos tho, so my flashplayer works. Let me know if I need to be more specific. I really would like to get xmms to work.

I recently purchased a DVB-T PCI (Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1110) card mainly for television watching purposes, but it also features FM radio tuner. I am now trying to find a software to listen to it.
