View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.04.2 Server on a small desktop to use as a print server. During installation I marked the sSH, Print, and Samba services.I can ssh into it just fine and that's how I'm configuring it. I have a hp Deskjet F2210 connected to it.My end goal is to be able to use the scanner from my *buntu desktop and from a desktop running XP. All of these being connected via ethernet router.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to first point out that I am a complete n00b when it comes to Ubuntu Server, and I managed to install Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 (on a screen-less Acer Aspire 5100 laptop) with Apache2, MySQL, OpenSSH, & PHP5. I currently have this server (hosting my website) behind a linksys router with only port 22, and 80 forwarded to its ip address. Now my question is: Would it be safe to configure a print server on the same machine in order to print from the 3 other computers on my router to one printer, or are there security risks involved (like what I have heard with LAMP servers and Samba on the same machine)? I am also wondering if it is safe the way I configured port 80 & 22? It has extremely long passwords, and I also went through the secure installation of one of the programs setting a root password too... But can somebody please help me with my server? I am very surprised I have gone this far in my first 2 weeks of my Web Scripting class too!

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to print from our new Mac laptop to our ubuntu server. The ubuntu server works fine as a print server for our XP, Vista and Ubuntu clients.
I tried this procedure... [URL]
The best I can do is make the Mac print pages squished down to 1/4 size. On my ubuntu client I had to change the print resolution from "auto" to 600x600 to make it work. I don't see the same option on the Mac.

I've installed opensuse 11.2 and want to install some more packages.
If I have the online repos enabled the package eclipse is found in
Index of /distribution/11.2/repo/oss
If I disable the online repos the packages are not found on the dvd.
i have now searched the dvd and eclipse is not available.
What is wrong? Why eclipse is not on dvd?
Is there an extra dvd as I read only non oss stuff is on other
dvd nad language special stuff..
how can I go about adding an additional lo interface, like lo:0? I need to create this interface, give it an IP and set it to not arp, so this box can be behind a load balancer. Just copying ifcfg-lo and changing the requisite attributes did not work, got an error saying "Interface lo:0 is not available".
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just finished installing Karmic on new computer. I have already installed java jre, flash plugin, and unrar/rar. My question is can I still install restricted extras to get addition applications installed, without corrupting my apps already installed? Or should I just manually install the remaining items from restricted extras manually?

I installed CUPS but it's not the solution which I'm looking for.
Error shown on screen is :
Building the shared folder support module [Failed]
I looked into /var/log/vboxadd-install.log, saw:
Error! Could not find module source directory.

I check the path /usr/src/vboxfs-3.1.8 exist there right, so why do I get this kind of error?
The following is my Makefile, I wanted to add a staic library named libtimer.a. I'm using the following Makefile. Please let me know how to add this static library:

I recently built a server from an old box using Ubuntu Server 9.10. This is my first server and I am very new to the server world.I have an Epson Stylus NX400 connected via USB. I have managed to configure it to the point where I can see the printer listed on my client laptop and can print a test page. However, I cannot print anything else. When I access the job history through the CUPS adminI can see that the print jobs were recognized and marked as complete, even though the printer never physically engaged.

I am trying to set up a usb weather station (WMR100) on my SUSE 11.1 system. It appears as /dev/hiddev0 (and /dev/hidraw0) when it is plugged in with:
crw-rw---- 1 root root ...
It is the only hiddev device that appears in /dev
I have added this to /etc/udev/rules.d code...
(I will add idVendor/Product values later)
The above successfully sets the access codes for hiddev0 when examined from command line (crw-rw-rw- ...). However, the file browser is fine until I look at the properties for /dev/hiddev0 when it hangs - showing nothing.
Can anyone shed light on this - especially as to if I have done something wrong or this might be a 'bug'

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm new to setting up Linux Servers. I've setup a Ubuntu 10.10 Server along with CUPS and I'm using Webmin to talk to the server. I have a HP PSC 1315 Multifunction printer connected via usb to the server. Using the CUPS web interface I am able to get the server to detect the connected printer and it identified the HP PSC 1310 Series drivers.
When I printer a test page from the server's screen the print job goes through ok and the size was about 5k.
I then setup a samba share to allow my Windows 7 machine to share the printer. Windows 7 is able to pick up the shared printer correctly and I used the default HP 1310 Series drivers. When I tried to send a test page to the printer, that single page ended up being 3887kb and I also tried printing out a single paged word document which ended up being over 7MB.
I'm trying to set up a cups print server on 10.10 server. When I run

I successfully installed cups on my fedorabox, I can manage it through the web interface on port 631. I added the hplip and installed a HP Deskjet printer. However, when I want to print a test page I get the following error: "no pages found". The print job is in a stopped state...
View 2 Replies View RelatedInteresting problem: For the first time with Xubuntu 10.10 64bit, I am finding certain applications print corrupt. A varying amount of letters / numbers either get substituted/print a blank space/ print a box etc etc. This corruption seems to happen from a Pdf ( evince ) or Spreadheet ( Gnumeric ) Opening the same Pdf on another machine (ubuntu 10.10 32bit) prints perfectly. Opening the same .xls file on the original computer but using OOo Calc prints perfectly.
I guess I have ruled out any problems with the printer itself or the network JetDirect box. I have re-installed CUPS and evince and upgraded to the latest version of HPLIP but the problem appears unchanged.
I cannot print pdf files. I have tried using okular and xpdf. The documents display in the program, but print preview shows a blank page. The printer then sends out blank pages. I have tried printing on 2 different printers using usb cables. Using terminal to process the commands shows error:
Quote:
xxx@xxx:~$ xpdf
***** MediaBox = ll:0,0 ur:611.976,791.968
***** CropBox = ll:0,0 ur:611.976,791.968
***** Rotate = 0
Segmentation fault
Converting to .ps also is blank.
My wife has a canon MP470 printer and running ubuntu 10.10. I am able to print black and white, but unable to print photos. I got it to work using another driver, but not the 'correct' one for this printer. I have searched a bit and don't see anything about ubuntu 10.10, just older versions. Or should I just network her to my printer....?

I recently came across an old Epson DX5000 Printer/Scanner which works fine via USB.
It also had a Netgear PS121v2 USB Print Server attached - http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2517
Instructions for Windows set-up are given at the above link - how do I do this in Ubuntu 10.04?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an old clunker box with no HD insalled in it. it does have a cd rom however, and i would be able to run DSL from it with that alone.
i want to set this box up as a print server, since as it is all of the computers in the house must actually be moved to the printer and connected to it via USB to print.
i am looking to simplify this for everyones benefit, here.
the box i am going to use will *not* be connected to a monitor, KB or mouse once it is ready to be left on its own. i will use these to set it up, but after that, id prefer a way to http: into it or FTP into it.
i am on ubuntu, the rest of the house is on XP. i figure i will have to configure the computer with SAMBA in order to set it up for sharing, is that correct?
i will be connecting the computer to the wireless router.
basically, id just like help with a roadmap on what needs to be done to set this up. i dont need step by step directions on everything, just an idea of where to start. id really like to get this setup within a few hours.
I recently updated my server from 9.04 to 10.04.1Previously, my two macs running snow leopard were able to connect to the server and print with no problem. Now they won't print. I can print a test page through CUPS web interface and my Ubuntu 10.04.1 laptop will print to the server.I noticed a difference in Gutenprint that went from v5.2.3 to v5.2.5. At least that was the difference I saw between what the CUPS web interface was showing and what driver I had to choose from when adding a printer on the mac said. I updated the gutenprint drivers to 5.2.5 on the mac.I've uninstalled CUPS 1.4.3, reinstalled it, deleted the printer, added it again. This is the error I get in the mac when I try to print:Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME)The print job says its printing, never does, and eventually shows its paused
View 8 Replies View RelatedI initially had a problem accessing the CUPS interface (see my other post) and got that resolved by adding the user "cupsys". Now, everything "looks" ok, and when I print a test page, it shows it as completed (in CUPS). However, the page never prints.
