I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04.2 Server on a small desktop to use as a print server. During installation I marked the sSH, Print, and Samba services.I can ssh into it just fine and that's how I'm configuring it. I have a hp Deskjet F2210 connected to it.My end goal is to be able to use the scanner from my *buntu desktop and from a desktop running XP. All of these being connected via ethernet router.

I have just started using puppy linux 5.2 ( lucid) which has transformed my old PC . The only real problem encountered is that I cant get my HP 1050C to print or scan . Running the cups wizard gives me the option of the printer and I found a driver in the list. The table below shows the printer settings being used . Sending jobs or maintenance to the printer has no effect although the cups system says they are complete . Xsane does not see the scanner . The printer functions fine under windows . I am obviously missing something very basic

I have attempted to set up ubuntu server 10.10 on my home network. I only have one computer and access to windows is a must for me, so what I have been doing is installing the server via VMware as a virtual server. Now, I have been able to successfully set up a server that works on the LAN, but for some reason I have been unable to get access to the server via the external ip address.
I will list all known information about my network, host computer and VMware.
I'm currently using VMware Workstation. For the virtual machine I have installed, I have allocated 500 GB of space to a partition on my 2 TB external hard drive. The network is currently set to NAT, but I would much prefer to Bridge the network so that the guest would be assigned a unique LAN address.
The host computer is a laptop. It is connected to the internet through a wireless router. I can successfully host a teamspeak server that accepts incoming traffic from the internet. The operating system that is installed is Windows Vista.
The network is set up as follows:
The host's LAN address is 192.168.1.50 and is connect to the Router which has an address of 192.168.1.1. I am using a Netgear WNDR3300v1 wireless router. The webserver itself would likely have the IP 192.168.1.2 in the circumstance that the network was bridged for the virtual machine. So the WAN Interface would be the modem my company has provided which has assiged the external IP 24.113.92.228. The modem is a cable modem, the brand is a motorola surfboard.
I'm having trouble getting this printer to print. It'll scan fine, but it won't print. I keep getting the following error:
the printer's state message is: '/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed'
I have searched and searched and tried numerous things, but I just can't get it to print. (I tried to post the debugging output here, but the forum kept wiping out my post).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI need to first point out that I am a complete n00b when it comes to Ubuntu Server, and I managed to install Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 (on a screen-less Acer Aspire 5100 laptop) with Apache2, MySQL, OpenSSH, & PHP5. I currently have this server (hosting my website) behind a linksys router with only port 22, and 80 forwarded to its ip address. Now my question is: Would it be safe to configure a print server on the same machine in order to print from the 3 other computers on my router to one printer, or are there security risks involved (like what I have heard with LAMP servers and Samba on the same machine)? I am also wondering if it is safe the way I configured port 80 & 22? It has extremely long passwords, and I also went through the secure installation of one of the programs setting a root password too... But can somebody please help me with my server? I am very surprised I have gone this far in my first 2 weeks of my Web Scripting class too!

I installed squeeze on my eeepc 1015ped and downloaded the correct firmware-brcm80211 drivers but every time I scan for my network using iwconfig wlan0 scan or wicd, my computer completely freezes. I previously had a solid install running xmonad, and wicd was working like a charm (using the same broadcom driver) but i tinkered too much with it and decided to do a fresh install. I haven't quite run into a problem like this before.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing trouble configuring suPHP on my Ubuntu 8.04 web server. I've googled around quite a bit and the general consensus is that you first disable php5, then install the suphp module (I did that from the repo). I configured one of my Vhosts to use suPHP_UserGroup, but I get the following error:
Invalid command 'suPHP_UserGroup', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration
I know the module is loaded, so I'm not sure why I'm getting this error. Is a Vhost the right place for this setting? Note that I installed from the repository instead of compiling from source if that makes any difference. Any insight on this issue? I can provide configuration files if need be.
Edit: After some extended googling, from what I understand I have to recompile suPHP using the 'paranoid' mode. Am I correct?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using ubuntu 9.10 64bit and I'want to configure php mysql and lampp. Also the package mysql-ser is already installed, so if I install MYSQL GUI tools(Administrator, query browser..) from my synaptic package manager will it detect the mysql already installed ? Also tried configuring lampp by extracting it in my /opt directory and i started the server, which MySQL ll it detect the one which was previously installed otr the oin that in gui tools ?
Also think the current ubuntu repository does't have latest build of mysql GUI tools, so how the above mentioned things ll change if I try to download the individual package.
Oveall what I want is to configure Mysql GUI tools, Mysql workbench, xampp and php(For this I'm using Bluefish and Komposer). Please help me out so that I can leave windows for my Web-projects.

The files named.conf.local, db.example.com & db.192 are almost same as the documentation. And I can restart DNS. But when I followed the troublshooting page to ping example.com

i am setting up a raid 1 on a netbook with the 30gb internal ssd as the primary drive and the 32gb sd card as the mirror. i am following the instructions here...

i have several working raid 1 arrays under my belt using usb sticks and want to try something more advanced and practical now.i have configured the internal ssd with no trouble, however, the 32gb sd card is not showing up in the installer. so i cannot configure it as the mirror. my 2gb sd cards show up when i run the installer why doesn't the 32gb sd card? if i boot into a session the primary ssd the 32gb card does show up mounted on the desktop. it shown as a dos partition.
I'm replacing an ancient Netware server with a new Ubuntu 8.04 box running samba and LDAP. I want to see if there's a way to get Samba to emulate the way permissions propagate through Netware. Namely, if I see a directory structure like this:

With Netware I can give permission to User to edit "User Can Edit.txt" and the permissions will propagate in reverse to allow User to see the two [User Cant See] directories and edit the text file. "User CANT Edit.txt" will still be invisible to User. This is very convenient as I can simply give user access to one file, they can navigate to it through the directory structure, and all files not explicitly given access to will still be invisible.
With Samba the only way I've been seeing to get this would be to explicitly give User access to both [User Cant See] directories, give him access to the "User Can Edit.txt" and remove any access to "User CANT Edit.txt" and every other file in the latter two nested directories.

The script installed in the installation directory was called 'dispatch.fcgi', and not parsing when I visited the page through the browser, just displaying the contents of the script. OK, so I installed the apache mod libapache2-mod-fastcgi using apt-get. Then 'a2enmod fcgid' followed by an apache restart.
Now when I visit the Redmine folder through the web browser I get 'Forbidden You don't have permission to access /redmine/dispatch.fcgi on this server.'
I checked to ensure www-data owns all files and has correct permissions to the folder. But this doesn't seem to work.
I am trying to print from our new Mac laptop to our ubuntu server. The ubuntu server works fine as a print server for our XP, Vista and Ubuntu clients.

The best I can do is make the Mac print pages squished down to 1/4 size. On my ubuntu client I had to change the print resolution from "auto" to 600x600 to make it work. I don't see the same option on the Mac.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried to decipher the info on the opensuse site about networked scanners but it's not clear to me and I don't see anything in the forum here that addresses the question, so here goes. My PC is an opensuse 11.3 box. My Epson CX9400 is attached to a Windows 7 PC at the other end of the house.
The PC's can talk and can access shared files nicely. It will print perfectly from the Windows box or the Linux box. It will scan perfectly from the Windows box. BUT I cannot scan documents from the Linux box. Have installed XSane and Image! Scan for Linux and neither one seem to find the scanner. I tried adding it manually in YaST and it doesn't seem to find it either.
I need AV for Linux to scan windows clients.
I search over internet but not found something like that

I have added the card as both V4L and MPEG4 (I'm unsure which I'm supposed to use).
I setup the source to have "no grabber", and then set up input, when I do this, for V4L, there is no "Scan for Channels" option, when i set up input for MPEG4, there is that option, but when I click it i get an error, "Failed to open the card", but I can change the input on that page to the V4L input, i hit scan for channels, it scans and adds channels up to channel 22, where I get "No Lock"; it doesn't seem to do anything else from there.
So, how should I be using this card, and how can I know when its working with mythtv?>
