Ubuntu Networking :: How To Set Up Print Server

Sep 25, 2010

I recently came across an old Epson DX5000 Printer/Scanner which works fine via USB.

It also had a Netgear PS121v2 USB Print Server attached - http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2517

Instructions for Windows set-up are given at the above link - how do I do this in Ubuntu 10.04?

I have a Netgear DGN2000 Wireless-N ADSL2 Router and I'm hoping I can access the Epson Printer from other PCs on my local wireless network.

Ubuntu Networking :: Using Scanner Through A Linksys Wireless Print Server?

Mar 4, 2010

I have an HP PSC2110 that is connected to a Linksys WPSM54G wireless print server. Printing works great, no issues what so ever. I am wondering if anyone has been able to configure the scanner to work that way as well. If I connect the PSC2210 to my laptop via USB, XSane sees the scanner and works perfectly. I am trying to figure out if there is a way for XSane to see the scanner through the Linksys PS?

Karmic 9.1 64 bit
Toshiba Satellite L455
Linksys WPSM54G ver 1.1
HP PSC2110

Not sure what else I should list.

Ubuntu Networking :: D-link DPR-1061 Print Server Stopped Working?

Oct 31, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 10.04. In the summer a few months back, I managed to get my ancient HP Laserjet 6L printer working via a wired D-Link-DPR 1061 print server and Netgear network switch. This was even though it was not on the print server's compatibility list. A couple of months later it stopped printing and I have not been able to get it going again since.

The print server has one parallel port (used by the 6L) and a couple of USB ports which I don't use.

I have been going through the Ubuntu add printer wizard. The print server can connect via an IP address. I am using its device URI: lpd://ip address/dlk-portname

I have tried all 5 HP laserjet 6L drivers that come with Ubuntu without success. I have the foomatic/ljet4 [en] currently selected. When I try to print a test page nothing is printed and when I do a print self test I get this message:

CUPS SERVER ERROR There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-document-format-not-supported'.

By, the way I also have a Windows 7 PC and managed to get the 6L working with same print server using the XP drivers, but every so often it stops working. A reinstall gets it going again.

Networking :: CUPS With Remote Print Server - D-Link DS-802

Dec 6, 2010

I have Rechat FC4 with CUPS 1.45 and a Dlink DS-802 Print Server.

I have installed CUPS, and pointed it at the DS-802,
but no joy.

Windows already prints to the 802 via a W2k3 server, so that works fine. FC4 with CUPS seems to point at the 802 but print jobs from localhost (just go to the print queue, and there they stay.

Windows continues to function fine, but linux wont send to the 802. Also, if Windows users try to print to the CUPS shared printer, it shows "No Accesss".

Networking :: Can't Connect CUPS To A USB LPR Network Print Server / Get It?

Nov 18, 2010

I just recently bought a WinStar USB LPR Network Print Server so that I could connect my printer to my network so all the machines on my network could print, and everything would be OS independent. The problem I'm having is that I can't get CUPS to connect to the printer. It either never prints anything, saying that the printer is not connected, or saying that LPR is spooling the job, but it never completes. I've been configuring it as a network printer in CUPS, and trying all the different configuration options to no avail. The print server is located on http://192.168.1.103 and is pingable. The print server I have is this one:

What is the correct way to set up a print server like this so I can print to it?

Networking :: Accessing Home File/print Server Through The Internet?

Mar 30, 2011

I just received a 2 tb drive for my server to be. The pc is a P4 3.06 ghz with 4 gb of ram. I have found a number of posts on this forum, as well as on the net in general, about setting up a file/print server at home. What I want to be able to do is to access my server through the internet from my office computer (windows 2000) How can I do that? I have not yet spent much time trying to decide which distro I will use. It seems that a number of them are suitable for this purpose, so I just plan to try several from a live cd and then choose one.

Server :: Windows 7 To Linux Server Print Job Size Very Large

Jan 21, 2011

I'm new to setting up Linux Servers. I've setup a Ubuntu 10.10 Server along with CUPS and I'm using Webmin to talk to the server. I have a HP PSC 1315 Multifunction printer connected via usb to the server. Using the CUPS web interface I am able to get the server to detect the connected printer and it identified the HP PSC 1310 Series drivers.

When I printer a test page from the server's screen the print job goes through ok and the size was about 5k.

I then setup a samba share to allow my Windows 7 machine to share the printer. Windows 7 is able to pick up the shared printer correctly and I used the default HP 1310 Series drivers. When I tried to send a test page to the printer, that single page ended up being 3887kb and I also tried printing out a single paged word document which ended up being over 7MB.

Ubuntu :: Printing Corrupted - Get Substituted / Print A Blank Space / Print A Box

Mar 23, 2011

Interesting problem: For the first time with Xubuntu 10.10 64bit, I am finding certain applications print corrupt. A varying amount of letters / numbers either get substituted/print a blank space/ print a box etc etc. This corruption seems to happen from a Pdf ( evince ) or Spreadheet ( Gnumeric ) Opening the same Pdf on another machine (ubuntu 10.10 32bit) prints perfectly. Opening the same .xls file on the original computer but using OOo Calc prints perfectly.

I guess I have ruled out any problems with the printer itself or the network JetDirect box. I have re-installed CUPS and evince and upgraded to the latest version of HPLIP but the problem appears unchanged.

Ubuntu :: Setup A Print Server In House?

Jan 14, 2010

I have an old clunker box with no HD insalled in it. it does have a cd rom however, and i would be able to run DSL from it with that alone.

i want to set this box up as a print server, since as it is all of the computers in the house must actually be moved to the printer and connected to it via USB to print.

i am looking to simplify this for everyones benefit, here.

the box i am going to use will *not* be connected to a monitor, KB or mouse once it is ready to be left on its own. i will use these to set it up, but after that, id prefer a way to http: into it or FTP into it.

i am on ubuntu, the rest of the house is on XP. i figure i will have to configure the computer with SAMBA in order to set it up for sharing, is that correct?

i will be connecting the computer to the wireless router.

basically, id just like help with a roadmap on what needs to be done to set this up. i dont need step by step directions on everything, just an idea of where to start. id really like to get this setup within a few hours.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Can't Print From Mac To Server After Upgrade To 10.04.1?

Sep 20, 2010

I recently updated my server from 9.04 to 10.04.1Previously, my two macs running snow leopard were able to connect to the server and print with no problem. Now they won't print. I can print a test page through CUPS web interface and my Ubuntu 10.04.1 laptop will print to the server.I noticed a difference in Gutenprint that went from v5.2.3 to v5.2.5. At least that was the difference I saw between what the CUPS web interface was showing and what driver I had to choose from when adding a printer on the mac said. I updated the gutenprint drivers to 5.2.5 on the mac.I've uninstalled CUPS 1.4.3, reinstalled it, deleted the printer, added it again. This is the error I get in the mac when I try to print:Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME)The print job says its printing, never does, and eventually shows its paused

Ubuntu :: Recommendations For Supported Wireless Print Server?

Jun 28, 2011

I have found it difficult to research a wireless print server which will be supported on Linux. I use Debian 6 and Ubuntu 10.04 (also Windows 7 64 bit, Vista, and MACOS Snow Leopard). Everyone in my household using uses a different OS, so it is all the more difficult to ensure interoperability across so many OSs. Where can I find a definitive, authoritative and complete list of supported print servers? Also, I want to keep things simple as possible. This is an important criterion for my choice of wireless print server.

GUI mediated setup/install is much preferred over complex configuration files and command line. I know of CUPs, but I don't know if CUPs will regulate the wireless print server and what's involved. The print server is to enable sharing of Brother HL-4050CDN printer. I'm seriously considering F5L049au (see Belkin : Home Base). But the customer support people tell me it does not support Linux. But this is true of the majority of the print server market. Must support N network standard, the printer above, be wireless, and be Linux compatible.

However, I can print test pages on the printer and also print from OpenOffice, so this seems to be app-dependent. Both Firefox and Ocular give every indication that the print job has been processed correctly.
