I am trying to access my Debian system from a MB Pro. I believe I have all the necessary packages installed,but I unable to figure out how to actually connect, because I don't know what my hostname should be.On the Debian system, my username is jack and the hostname is aceraspire. jack@aceraspire:~$ hostnameaceraspireOn the mac terminal, I type ssh jack@aceraspire but it says ssh: Could not resolve hostname aceraspire: nodename nor servname provided, or not known.I feel like I'm missing the .edu or .com portion, but what is it supposed to be/how can I set it or find it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been running Ubuntu on my laptop since 9.10 by itself (not dualbooting Windows). I had no problems with it back then but I did notice that when I upgraded, not all the packages installed and I would get an error message saying so. I never thought much of it. The problem became apparent when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.4, I would get an error message everytime and the upgrade would be cancelled. This forced me to reinstall Ubuntu for both 10.04 and 10.10. As soon as I downloaded 10.10 I downloaded docky and chromium. Heres where my current problems arise:
- Docky (which worked in 10.04) wont work even after I download compiz.
- Every time I update the system, if i try to update chromium or anything else from google it cancels the upgrade.
- I tried using "sudo apt-get upgrade" in the terminal but I get
"Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened."
How can I list what i have installed for current packages, excluding what normally comes with a fresh install of 9.10?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running 9.10 and am anticipating upgrading to 10.04 when it is released next week. I am however, running several packages from PPA's that were simply not working well at the versions included with 9.10 (I know specifically the 64-bit version of Flash and Wine are setup this way).
Since these installs are out of the scope of the official Ubuntu sources, how are these handled when I upgrade? More importantly, since some of these packages were just installed as a temporary fix until 10.04 came out, for some of them I'd like to remove the PPA version and reinstall the default version (since for several of them the 10.04 version has caught up to where it needs to be). Is there any way to identify all packages installed from PPA's on the system?
I was wondering if there's a package that can report on the frequency with which a program (e.g. gnuplot) has been run over, say, the past week, or month.

how can I go about adding an additional lo interface, like lo:0? I need to create this interface, give it an IP and set it to not arp, so this box can be behind a load balancer. Just copying ifcfg-lo and changing the requisite attributes did not work, got an error saying "Interface lo:0 is not available".

I then realised the GUIs sucked, so I removed them. Now the computer janitor wants to remove virtuallbox, svn, and who knows what else all because of those stupid packages! how to mark certain packages as deliberatley installed so the computer janitor will take them and their dependencies off the list and let me clean things up?

The reason is that I configured a system which fits me just right (I installed some additional packages and removed some standard packages like OpenOffice...) and was wanting to back it up - even for a newer Ubuntu-Version.
Most of the changes are already gone in /var/log/dpkg.log... so this option does not exist...Does anyone know where Synaptic stores the information which package is installed and which is not? It is possible to view those packages by applying a filter.

Since I had problems with Openoffice since the upgrade to 9.10, I've tried to uninstall all openoffice. I've searched for 'openoffice' in synaptic and uninstalled all thet I've found. It has uninstalled many other things, thunderbird, firefox and god only knows what other. Now, there is a way to know what are the packages installed by default? Or, to install all the dafault packages? Or, there is a log of what I've uninstalled?

This took an absolute age and now I realise why - it has basically installed the entire KDE environment and associated lib packages as well.I have found /var/ log/ dpkg.log shows what has been installed and of course I can wade through that to make a list of all the packages and uninstall them all via Synaptic. But that will take a long time to do.
Is there anyway to somehow automate rolling back any package changes since a certain time?I've checked the man for dpkg and I can't see any mention of anything like this.
