Ubuntu Servers :: Migrate SVN Repository From Dapper To Lucid?
Sep 28, 2010
I have a (very old) svn repositoy on an ubunta dapper machine. I want to switch to another machine with lucid running. I simply want to "copy" the whole repository to the new machine. I've tried several ways, but the most succesful one was to do a dump on the old machine, copy the file to the new machine and do a load there. The repository has about 28.000 revisions. At revision 3130 it stopped with an error saying some path was not in UTF-8. I tried running a UTF-8 migrationtool on the dapper machine but this told me all files were UTF-8 compatible already. I am really stuck, even a two and a half hour google session didn't provide any answer.
edit: more specific, the error I get is:
Quote:
svnadmin: Path 'beginofpath?218tabase' is not in UTF-8
The end should have been /database instead of ?218tabase. When I look in the revision on the dapper machine this path shows a square at that location, so this is wrong also. When I try to open the dumpdile in gedit I get an errormessage saying:
Quote:
Could not open the file /home/usrname/repo.svndump using the Unicode (UTF-8 ) character encoding
When I change the encoding I get the same error for that encoding.

How do I migrate my user list to a new server installation? I thought that just copying /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow would be enough. I recently tried upgrading a lightweight bazaar server to 11.04, and the upgrade crashed. I had to perform a new installation of Ubuntu to recover operation of the system. I installed on a different hard drive. I had a dozen other people with user logins, so that they can get or modify bazaar repositories.
The new installation is running, and I can read all of the files on my old system's / drive. I tried copying the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files onto my new /etc -- but that did not seem to work. (When I looked using the System->Administration->Users-and-Groups GUI tool, there were no users visible, so I restored the old files.) What I intended to do was to clone the /etc and /home trees over to the new system. What am I missing?

I like to consider myself a fairly competent person, but i cannot change the resolution for the life of me. I'm trying to set my screen to 1368x768. I'm edited the xorg and played with xrandr (v1.1). The screen resolution GUI in dapper drake only gives me the basic res's and not the 1368 that i need. I cannot upgrade my ubuntu version (Dapper Drake) for unrelated reasons. please help below is a copy of my xorg.conf. no matter what i do, i get the same resolution in xrandr and the built in GUI screen resultion. here is my xorg.conf
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.

I have a working system running some older fedora, and new hardware running a fresh, new fedora install. I want to basically transfer my computer's "soul" into the new system ( user's stuff, firewall configuration, the various server & security configurations, etc.) and basically any customizations and non-hardware related packages installed that weren't part of the standard fedora install process. I'm looking for a magical easy button I can push to do all this (pause for laughter). Essentially, I want to "upgrade", but starting with a clean install on a different computer with different hardware. I have a vague idea of what needs to happen, like copying the /etc/*.conf files, /home directory, etc. but this seems very tedious, and the likelihood of me forgetting or overlooking something is 100%, and copying over entire disks or partitions wholesale is not necessary, and does not work for this scenario. I need to place/merge just the right files/directories in just the right places with surgical precision. Is there a utility for this? Maybe a way to diff the packages of the 2 computers and install the difference? Or at the very least some sort of checklist that could be scripted for my system? I'm desperately trying to avoid the pain, human misery & suffering encountered getting everything in the 1st system going.

I found 2 previous posts, one from 2005 and one from 2006. The 2005 post was not very helpful and the 2006 threads are not exactly what I was expecting. So I wanted to ask the question to be sure. I have already stood up the new fedora 12 server. The old server is also fedora 12. I need to migrate local users and sendmail mailboxes. In the past couple of years the environment was small enough to create a copy of the users and then have the users mail themselves, but I want to start migrating users/mailboxes properly.
On a unix level I am a jr admin, but I have extensive senior level experience as a windows engineer and network engineer. I do feel comfortable with using the unix command line, but usually operate the unix systems thru webmin because I am not familular with more complex commands. Ideally a software solution to migrate users and/or mailboxes from one server to another is what I am looking for, but in leiu of a software solution I still need to migrate user accounts and their mailboxes. LDAP is not in place, but if the process becomes easier with LDAP I am willing to do what is needed to set up LDAP. (I have no previous experience setting up LDAP)
I do not want to change my mail server from sendmail to different software. At least right now. Both systems are up and running. They can connect to each other via public ipv4 address' only. The new server has already been installed and configured with all the software to match the old server. How do I migrate users and sendmail mailboxes from one fedora 12 server to another fedora 12 server?

After moving to Lucid, I have no flashplayer. Eventually, I tracked the problem to a missing Cannonical repository. I inserted the line in the sources list: [URL] Now Synaptic reports:
E: Type [URL] is not known on line 45 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I have re-checked everything I can think of, and remain baffled!

I have a WebDAV folder (complete folder hierarchy in fact) currently managed by SAP's KM module. Long story short: it's in Windows, it's slow, I hate it.
I want to migrate the hole tree to my brand new Ubuntu Server 10.04 with a functional WebDAV server I just finished configuring. It connects to LDAP for user authentication, it's fast, it works like a charm.
Do you guys know any way I can transfer/migrate files from the Windows WebDAV to to Ubuntu WebDAV? The only thing that is important to keep is file security properties. Both WebDAVs have the same user database: our corporate Active Directory.

So researching how to install Tomcat 6, I ran across a guide that specifically states there are issues with the repository version of Tomcat. Doing some more research it seems like this is reported in multiple places including a disussion on the official mailing list that was inconclusive. So my question is, if this is intended for a production server should I use the repository one or manually install it

I have been looking into setting up a local repository for updates etc as we have an increasing number of fedora clients/servers. Searching the web I found multiple how-to's on how to accomplish this little project. One thing that bothers me is that each how-to seems to refer to a "static URL" mirror for rsync to get the rpms.

I'm working on setting up a new subversion server and getting an error I'm not having much luck resolving.
I'm attempting to create the repository in /home/svn/foo with the command svnadmin create /home/svn/foo while in /home/svn.
I am greeted with the error: svnadmin: SQLite compiled for 3.6.20, but running with 3.6.17
I installed subversion via yum install subversion
I've installed SQLite 3.6.22 from source and removed/installed subversion with no change.
What gives? I wasn't really wanting to install subversion from source. Seems a bit excessive.
Environment stuff:
[root@COS svn]# yum repolist
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
repo id repo name status
fedora Fedora 12 - i386 enabled: 15,366
updates Fedora 12 - i386 - Updates enabled: 4,731
repolist: 20,097

I'm trying to replace an office file server. I would like to avoid just another samba share.
I'm looking for a document repository, a bit more functionality than a plain samba share and very cross-platform.
I've looked a couple minutes at dspace, but that seems like a lot of work just configuring it. Dropbox would be fine except that they only have up to 100g, and it's off-site.
This is NOT for unauthenticated public use.
Here are some features I have in mind:
1. Web front end.
2. Any file format from a one-line text document to a Microsoft Word document to an ISO of a blu-ray disk to a very large database backup, binary or text.
3. Cross-platform clients, mostly Mac.
4. Authenticated via centralized one-login server or maybe by a key such as an SSH public key.
5. Searchable by terms, name or content if the type is appropriate.
6. Pass in the URL for an object and have the server download it.
7. Stores files in native format so if the app breaks I can just get the files.

server configuration: SCSI 36gig -> sdd; boot and root as it was first in the box;2 IDE hard drives -> sda/sdb for data; and1 SATA drive -> sdc for data. After upgrading to Lucid (not right away, but a bit later), it stopped booting:'Gave up waiting for root device.'ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/........... does not exist. Dropping to a shell!(initramfs)Happily, pushing ^D let it resume booting, but it kept repeating. After some study, I found the Lucid release notes that said "if you upgrade to ext4, you have to manually update Grub". A quick check showed that sdd was now, indeed ext4 - nobody told me! And, why couldn't it update Grub by itself? But, I dutifully ran grub-install and life went back to normal.
Until last night, when I updated the kernel, etc. with apt-get and restarted, and grub dropped dead:More googling turned up this solution, which I used with an install CD:http://tinyurl.com/2dhswzzWhich worked, but it brought back the first problem, and running grub-install doesn't fix it. So, what do I do now?

I'd like to upgrade libssl to 0.9.8l version on my Lucid-based server, because of CVE-2009-3555 - they say that 0.9.8l disables SSL renegotiation, fixing the security issue. But there is no 0.9.8l in Ubuntu repositories - only 0.9.8k-7 is available. how can I upgrade this library? BTW. it is really strange why such significant security fix is not available in Ubuntu repositories. why it is not available?

How to bond NICs in Ubuntu server 10.04/10.10 correctly.
I installed ifenslave-2.6 on a fresh install. Then I tried going into the /etc/network/interfaces file and adding a new entry for bond0 to the file and adding bond-mode 6, bond-miimon 100 and slaves eth1 eth2 to the end of the bond0 config.
That did not work, it keep telling me it cannot bring up the interface even after a reboot it still does not work.
I also followed some tutorial I found online about editing /etc/modprobe.d/aliases
That did not work really well either, the interface came up but had no slaves.
Can anyone give a clue or a current method to bond interfaces in the 10.04/10.10

I've installed Sun Java, tomcat6 and tomcat6-admin on 10.04 server 64-bit. By default, tomcat is configured to run as the tomcat6 user. Everything runs just fine on tcp/8080 as initially configured. Modifying the connector port in /etc/tomcat6/server.xml to anything below 1024 (e.g. port 80) results in:
SEVERE: Error starting endpoint
java.net.BindException: Permission denied <null>:80
This all begs the question... do you *really* have to run tomcat as root to bind to a well-known port? I.e. is there really no way for tomcat to start as root, bind to a privileged port and then drop privs?
