Ubuntu :: Unable To Modify Resolution Dapper Drake XORG?

I like to consider myself a fairly competent person, but i cannot change the resolution for the life of me. I'm trying to set my screen to 1368x768. I'm edited the xorg and played with xrandr (v1.1). The screen resolution GUI in dapper drake only gives me the basic res's and not the 1368 that i need. I cannot upgrade my ubuntu version (Dapper Drake) for unrelated reasons. please help below is a copy of my xorg.conf. no matter what i do, i get the same resolution in xrandr and the built in GUI screen resultion. here is my xorg.conf

When the power twitches, and X is displayed on the current tty. the display resolution is somehow lost. When the system is rebooted and X restarted, the resolution displayed (and the best offered) is 800x600.My resolution of choice is 1280x1024, and none of the configuration files appear to have been changed.The X resolution is unaffected if another tty was displayed at the time. (I am often working on two or three consoles as well as what X is using)In the past it has been sufficient to comb through the file system and delete all the temporary files and caches that seem to be associated with X. I have never been sure if this was actually any sort of solution to begin with, but in any case it no longer seems to work.

I'm trying to improve the functionality of my mouse in my installation of Ubuntu 10.10 desktp 64-bit running inside a VMware workstation VM running on a Windows 7 64-bit host. I stumbled upon some instructions suggesting changing a xorg.conf directive (specifically, change the mouse protocol from "imps/2" to "explorerps/2") which I'd like to try out. However there is no xorg.conf file in Ubuntu 10.10. I tried using Xorg -configure to generate the file and placing it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but it seems to make no effect. Using "xinput list" the mouse is still listed as imps/2 even after I changed the xorg.conf file and rebooted. It seems Ubuntu 10.10 ignores the xorg.conf file completely? If that's the case, is it possible to manually specify this setting that used to belong to xorg.conf at all?

I've performed a fresh installation of Lubuntu 10.04 on a rather old PC hardware. Unfortunatly the displayed resolution is only 800x600 although the used graphic card can run with higher resolution (at least with Windows). According to this thread one could modify the resolution using xorg.conf. Below the information for the graphic card:

I have a (very old) svn repositoy on an ubunta dapper machine. I want to switch to another machine with lucid running. I simply want to "copy" the whole repository to the new machine. I've tried several ways, but the most succesful one was to do a dump on the old machine, copy the file to the new machine and do a load there. The repository has about 28.000 revisions. At revision 3130 it stopped with an error saying some path was not in UTF-8. I tried running a UTF-8 migrationtool on the dapper machine but this told me all files were UTF-8 compatible already. I am really stuck, even a two and a half hour google session didn't provide any answer.
edit: more specific, the error I get is:

The end should have been /database instead of ?218tabase. When I look in the revision on the dapper machine this path shows a square at that location, so this is wrong also. When I try to open the dumpdile in gedit I get an errormessage saying:

When I change the encoding I get the same error for that encoding.

I installed a new pc with testing debian. It says that the Xorg cannot start due to resolution and ddc. But where is gone the xorg.conf? there is nothing into /etc/X11 no /usr/share/X11 ...? What happens to that file?

get my VIA chrome 9 video card running with my Beamerproperly installed the openchrome driver and edited the /etx/X11/xorg.conf but the resolution settings are ignored. Something seems to be wrong with my hsync settings:

I'm trying to get my screen resolution set in Mythbuntu 9.10, but there is no xorg.conf on my system! I'm trying to figure out what to do (the xfce tool on mythbuntu doesn't offer the correct resolution, and I'm not even sure what driver I'm using). I've seen other threads saying to run nvidia-setup or somesuch. I assume the appropriate tool in my case would be aticonfig (I saw that elsewhere too) as I'm using an ATI Radeon 9600XT, but that tool says:

I need to find notes on how to achieve higher screen resolution via Xorg.conf and some other fixes since I just installed the NVIDIA driver... seems out of the box, my resolution is horrid, though theres an added NVIDIA Server and my dual monitors aren't configured to work. I used this tutorial to get the driver installed.

I am trying to run using WINE. It has a platinum rating on the site, and runs perfectly on my laptop.on my desktop it doesn't seem to run at all.The screen goes black,then brings me back to the desktop. I manually ran the WINE command in the terminal, and it produced the error "err11settings:X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsE x No matching mode found 320x200x8 @0! (XRandR)". The laptop and desktop are both running the same version of WINE (1.3.3) and have similar Nvidia cards (laptop has a mobile 9600, desktop has a 9800). I found a bug report on this exact issue on the WINE website (I'll paste a link), and they mention that the solution is simply to add the 320x200x8 resolution mode to Xorg.conf.
I've tried generating the line that I may need with a web-based modeline calculator, referenced on another thread, but it caused my system to fail booting. Since the display of my notebook doesn't work very well anymore, straight vertical blue line on the right side of the screen, I want to connect an external monitor. (ADI [it doesn't say the exact model] 21 inch; resolution 1600x1200 and 85 Hz refresh rate).
I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 with kernel 2.6.31.17 and xrandr does not recognize the monitor correctly (see code of xrandr output). Adding a new mode did not work and currently it displays a resolution of 1200x768 which is horrible. In this version of Ubuntu the xorg.conf is not used anymore and is thus empty. As I have read you could create an entry in a new xorg.conf for your hardware which would be used by Ubuntu, having priority over xrandr settings.
But I do not really know what the monitor section in xorg.conf would have to look like, as the original screen would have to be set to 1200x768 or be disabled all together. The screens would have to be mirrored. Would the setting also work, when the external monitor is not connected to the notebook, so the original screen would display everything correctly.
Here some information about the system which will hopefully be useful for you. Please post helpful links I have overlooked or ask for more information.
My onboard graphics intel chip is capable of a resolution of 1600x1200 as it works in Windows:

i have a Fedroa12 installed as a VM, and my problem is that i can't change the resolution higher than 800x600 .
i am trying to do that with an Xorg.conf file. here is what i did:
1. telinit 3
2. Xorg -configure (root user)
3. cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
4. inside xorg.conf i have added the following:
under the "screen" section i have added:
DefaultDepth 24 then under the "SubSection" of Depth 24, i have added:
Modes "1680x1050" "1028X768" "800x600"
but then whenever i am try to start the X, it fails with the following message: no screen found...
since i am doing it for studying only, how to configure properly the xorg.conf file ?

FC12-x86_64/KDE How can I lock in the 1024x768 resolution in xorg.conf ?
The Option PreferredMode is Ignored , checking in Xorg-0-log.
If I put in Modes "1024x768" it gets changed everytime I reboot.
I'm using the Nvidia driver. Can't use the nouveau driver, the mouse disappears when waking the computer up after about a half hour of sleep, then I have to restart computer to get mouse to reappear.

I clean installed xubuntu on an old laptop. I think I messed up the original configuration of xorg though because the highest resolution is 800x600.

I am using 10.10 64bit with a Nvidia GeForce Graphic Card on my Acer 5741G 434 Notebook.
I have always used Compiz and without it I can barely use my Notebook. Apparently I had to install the Nvidia accelerated 3d Drivers (current version) in order to use Compiz.
However I cannot enable the "normal" visual effects (right click on desktop / change bakcground/ visual effects) that are necessary for using compiz.
Also everytime I reboot my resolution goes back to 800x600 although I saved the resolution to 1366. So everytime I start my Notebook I have to go to the Nvidia X server settings and set the resolution to 1366.
What I tried until now:
- I tried to reinstall Ubuntu twice!
- I tried to unistall all nvidia Drivers and install through the terminal using the command "sh" the nvidia drivers i downloaded from their website
- I tried to use the nouveau open source driver
Additional Information:
- when I boot a logo of the nvidia BETA driver appears
- for the past couple days I even experienced another problem: the windows do not have the minimize/close and maximize buttons
I am even willing to install the System again!
I had nothing but problems with the latest 10.10 ubuntu distribiution.

I've been scouring the internet for an answer to this problem. I am using Squeeze and have properly configured Grub2 to set my console screen resolution to 1024x768x32 (as per updating /etc/default/grub to contain 'GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x32' and updating /etc/grub.d/00_header to contain 'set gfxpayload=keep') and everything works wonderfully. My resolution is set as it should be. However upon installing Xorg (aptitude install xorg ratpoison), my console resolution gets changed to what appears to be 1280x1024.
I thought that this was due to xrandr, however when I issue:
# xrandr -s 1024x768
only the X resolution is changed. When I then CTRL-ALT-F1 back to the console, the resolution is still at 1280x1024 (I am aware that xrandr only affects X, but I assumed that because my console resolution was correct before installing X there might have been some correlation).
I would like for my console resolution to stay at 1024x768 as per Grub2's configuration and for X's resolution to be at 1280x1024.
PS I also noticed that prior to installing Xorg, my CPU boots up without any screen blanking (only for a second or so). However, after installing Xorg, during the boot process the screen does blank briefly. It is at that time that the resolution gets changed to the 1280x1024 setting.

I have set up my Ubuntu virtual machine and am trying to adjust the screen resolution because it's stuck at 800x600 presently and there are no higher resolution options. I've looked at numerous similar forms and tutorials online and they all seem to involve editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf. However, for whatever reason, this file seems not to exist on my machine. I found another tutorial on how to add a screen resolution using xrandr --addmode which added the resolution I want to the list that appears when I type the command xrandr, but when I try to apply it I get an error about CRTC 262 failing.

I'm now working to install Debian 8 on another computer since yesterday. Another Linux, and as always, endless list of problems.
- A computer that was freezing at every installation attempt (but never at the same moment) during installation when the Broacom cardbus adapter was connected (it's a chance that it is easy to remove and I found it quickly... and it is working once installation is finished)
- Turning to sleep mode after 15 seconds if I don't quickly try to login
- BOINC receive no work
- Tray icons are here but invisible - no icons, just gray space
- xserver-xorg-video-savage is installed, but I have resolution problems, and weird glittering horizontal lines when the computer is working (as on my other PC with the SiS video card).
On Debian 7.8, it was working fine for having the 1024x768 native resolution of this laptop screen.
But, with debian 8, the max resolution is now "800x600" and with this screen, there is no smooth effect : the image is a disaster.

How to confirm that my Video card is included into xserver-xorg-video-savage package ? How do I know if the driver is loaded ? How to modify xorg confifugration files in this modern flavour of Linux in order to force adding the 1024x768 resolution ? I already succeed into /etc/default/grub and "update-grub" for the bootloader screen but I want it too in the desktop environment.

I have setup a Sun Ultra 2 with Debian 6. It currently has dual 200MHz sparc I CPUs, 512MB RAM, and a Creator 3D 15MB video card. I have in the mail on its way to me dual 300MHz sparc II CPUs and enough RAM to max this thing out at 2GB. Anyway, I am currently having an issue configuring xorg.conf. The only resolution available to me is 1152x900 (which isnt even a supported resolution by my monitor), but Id like to use 1280x1024. I have tried for probably over a week now to no avail. I will paste my current xorg.conf file (the relevant parts), and please keep in mind that I have been messing with this file for a while so sorry if it looks bad.

I've created the file from new in /usr/share/X11 and then added to lines from GTF. I@ve restarted Xorg by killing the PID then restarting and I don't get this resolution unfortunately

monitor is a Optiquest Q19wb. I normally have is set on 1280x1024, but fedora will only go to 800x600. It has detected the monitor correctly. Not sure if being connected to KVM will cause issues. The xorg.conf does not exist. Have installed system-config-display but have not run yet.

I am running 11.1 with an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card and I have configured the monitor and graphics card via "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia". My xorg shows all of the correct monitor settings and screen resolutions, yet when I go to the Display settings or nvidia-settings, it does not offer me any of the 16:10 aspect resolutions that are in the xorg.conf file.

I am trying to set up a permanent resolution in the xorg.conf file. At the moment whenever I reboot the machine the resolution defaults to auto. How I can change that to be constantly at 1600x1200?

I have a IBM ThinkCenter workstation with an Intel i810 chipset and can only get a resolution of 800x600 maximum. I have read this url dealing with this chipset and resolution and cannot get anything past 800x600.http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/x-config.htmland here is my /etc/X11/Xorg.conf

I've never been able to touch or modify anything in USR. Now it's being a problem, as wine installed itself like 8 times and won't run right. It won't let me delete the files.
How do I get permission to do stuff on USR?
EDIT: I'm set as "administrator" and I've given myself every right, however frivolous or useless. I still can't do anything on usr.

my laptop screen has 1900x1280 (native resolution) and my second monitor has 1600x1080
After browsing the forums and messing around with drivers I managed to get the resolution up to 1600x1080 (from 1000x800 at install) on the laptop screen. No luck at all with the second monitor. I currently have it connected with both VGA and DVI.
my understanding is I need to use twin view to setup the second monitor. I've read several of the earlier posts but haven't been able to get it to work. Here is my current xorg.conf file:
