Ubuntu :: Nautilus: How To Disable CTRL+Q?

Mar 23, 2011

There must be a way to disable CTRL+Q for Nautilus, but google has failed me Actually, I usually have several permanent nautilus windows opened, and when I just hit CTRL+Q on the wrong window, it closed all of nautilus!

So I just "pkill nautilus" to restore the previous nautilus session (even if we can't control nautilus window session manually). But there are still a few things that could be improved for Nautilus. So for now, can we disable CTRL+Q shortcut for Nautilus?

I often use the key combination ctrl + shift + F10 in my editor, and sometimes I mistakenly hit ctrl + alt + F10 which instantly transports me to a black screen with nothing but a cursor resulting in my having to reboot. I have no idea what the purpose of this key binding is but I want to get rid of it. I have looked in 'keyboard shortcuts' but there is none listed for ctrl + alt + F10. How do I disable this once and for all?

General :: Terminal - Disable C From Being Echoed On Ctrl-C?

May 30, 2010

When I press Ctrl-C in any pseudoterminal (xterm, gnome-terminal, rxvt, text console and SSH) in Karmic Koala, the string ^C gets echoed to the terminal in Ubuntu Karmic Koala. This hasn't happened in Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. I'd like to get rid of the extra ^C. Example:

$ cat
foo
foo
^C
$ _

I got the above by typing C, A, T, Enter, F, O, O, Enter, Ctrl-C. I want to get rid of the ^C, and get this for the same keypresses:

[Code]...

I tried setting stty -echoctl, which solved the problem for rxvt and xterm outside SSH, but it created a single-character HT when SSHing from an Ubuntu Hardy system, and it created a box with Unicode 0003 in it instead of the ^C in gnome-terminal. I want to see absolutely nothing when I press Ctrl-C. I'm using. Linux linux 2.6.31-20-generic-pae #57-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 8 10:23:59 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux I have these terminal settings in all systems and all terminal emulators:

ioctl(0, TCGETS, {c_iflags=0x2502, c_oflags=0x5, c_cflags=0xbf, c_lflags=0x8a3b, c_line=0, c_cc="x03x1cx7fx15x04x00x01x00x11x13x1ax00x12x0fx17x16x00x00x00"})

Code: sudo mv -f /etc/init/kdm.conf /etc/init/kdm.conf-disabled That basically renames it so it doesn't start. And if you do need to use the GUI, just run startx

Ubuntu Servers :: RAID AFU / Server Won't Boot After Upgrading To Lucid RC1?

Apr 22, 2010

Ran 'do-release-upgrade -d'on my server running Hardy.No problems during the upgrade.Rebooted after the upgrade completed, and I was presented with the new plymouth screen. This sucks for servers.It sat there displaying the logo for ~5 minutes.Hit CTRL+ALT+F1 through F8 and didn't see anything on the virtual consoles.Finally figured out that I had to hit ESC on the plymouth screen to actually see what was going on.It said /dev/sdi1 had problems along with /dev/md0.It sat there forever with no fsck status and no HDD lights blinking.

SysRq+REISUB and tweaked the boot parameter to remove 'quiet splash' and appended 'S' for single-user mode.Got the attached screenshot.The box has been sitting like this for ~15 minutes.Not entirely sure what to report a bug against at the moment. Plus the somewhat-new requirement of running 'ubuntu-bug' is pretty retarded in this situation. (Yeah, I know I can add some string to the URL to get around it.Why is it such a pain in the *** to report a bug?)I'm going to do some more digging to try and find out what is dying during boot.The new boot process is a bit of a mystery to me still, so if anyone has pointers or any devs want more detailed information,

I am not very familiar with IPv6, but to my understanding its a newer thing that's rarely found currently with ISPs, but can be a security issue now.

Ubuntu :: Freezes Mouse After Changing A Tab (with Ctrl+tab, Alt+#) Or Closing It (ctrl+w)?

Changing Tabs by just clicking on one does not freeze anything...Maybe some of you would think now if I am crazy because of complaining about such a little thing, but it is really annoying if you are used to work fluently with ff.Edit:I today noticed, that not only shortcuts in firefox, but all Hotkeys freeze my mouse for a second. For examle ctrl+c, ctrl+v, super+e or anything else.Do you have any Idea what causes this behaviour? Reinstalling ubuntu didn't change anything

I don't know how many has had this problem, but I understand I am not the only onehe problem is that after using synclient to disable the touchpad in 10.04 it would enable itself, seemingly, at random.Well, what I found was that unchecking the "Disable touchpad while typing" feature in "System->Preferences->Mouse->Touchpad" will fix the problem.Apparently the system does not recognize that the user has deliberately disabled the touchpad. And so it will reenable it when the user is "done typing".

Ubuntu :: Disable Frequent Disk Checks In Lucid?

May 11, 2010

Since upgrading (fresh install) to Lucid, I've been having to go through disk checks about once or twice a week on boot. I'm not sure why Lucid thinks it needs to check my disk so often. I looked into it a bit, and found a command that was supposed to stop disk checks happening so often.

Code: sudo tune2fs -i 2w `mount | awk '$3 == "/" {print $1}'` is supposed to set it to 2 weeks. I used "/home" too as I have home on a separate partition and didn't want that to be checked too. All was fine until I booted up to find another disk check today. It can sometimes take over half an hour to finish and C to cancel doesn't always work either.

I always shutdown cleanly, unless Ubuntu completely locks up, which happens maybe once every six months (although it did happen yesterday, but I have rebooted it a few times since then with no checks happening until just now). Is there a way to just disable checks completely? I wouldn't mind running them manually every now and then, I just don't want to do it as often as Lucid does.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Canonical Method To Disable Services?

Jul 19, 2010

Until Karmic Koala I could enable/disable services at startup (such as ssh or mysql) by issuing a update-rc.d -f someservice remove. On reboot, it would no longer run, and I could re-enable if necessary by, for example, running a update-rc.d someservice default.

However, it seems that now in Lucid Lynx this no longer works. For example, if I do a nmap localhost I can see that the ports for the respective services are open, therefore I assume they are likely running (which an attempted access confirms). For example, if I do a /etc/init.d/ssh stop, the ssh service is respawned. I've found that service ssh stop or initctl stop ssh effectively stops the service (i.e. it is no longer "respawned" if "killed"). But so far I haven't found documentation that conclusively indicates how to disable the service start on (re)boot.

So I ask you, what is now the currently "canonical" or "standard" way to enable/disable these services (particularly ones such as ssh or mysql) from starting on boot on Ubuntu? I'd like to avoid having to remove the respective packages if possible (as some posts suggest), since in some occasions I'm interested in manually running those services -- therefore, having to install/uninstall packages is impractical.
